For Nashville Choreographer Diane Kimbrough, her route to a career as a professional dancer, was influenced by her family history. A descendant of Ukrainian Jews who fled during the Pogroms of the Russian Empire, for Diane, leaning on resilience in the face of scrutiny, is practically an inherited trait. Today Diane speaks with poet Patricia Alice Albrecht, about the precarity of breaking into the world of professional dance, how a family history of self-reliance helped propel her forward, and how her decades as a professional entertainer have given her the courage to face down intolerance and hatred. Then Patricia braids the parallels of Dianes ancestral and professional histories into poetry.

Today Diane talks to Peggy Sealfon about supercharging your life for a happier healthier you. They share tips for starting the new year in a balanced and healthy way. Diane and Peggy discuss giving up making resolutions and instead setting intentions because these are goal orientated and less likely to fail. Goals and intentions are all about placing your attention in the direction you want to move, because your energy will always follow your attention. Diane and Peggy acknowledge the tendency for women to focus on everyone else rather than themselves and so Peggy gives some practical advice about placing yourself first whilst still helping others. Peggy is a personal Development Coach, Wellness Specialist, Author and the owner of Stoneware Studio. She has written and co-written several books, namely “Escape from Anxiety: Supercharge your Life with powerful Strategies from a to z”. In this episode Peggy takes Diane through the steps to fix an imbalance in your life, from taking a productivity pause to identifying interrupters in your life. What you will learn: Create intentions, not resolutions. Create a single intention as a mission statement for the year. Your energy follows your attention. Send your attention to positive and self affirming ideas. Focus on one thing at a time, do not try and multitask. You can’t give to others what’s not flowing through you. Value yourself enough to self-honor yourself, take time to do the things that will help you. Supercharge your life by integrating all the different parts from relationships, health and spirituality. Practice constant self evaluation to see if you’re keeping your life in balance. Take a productivity pause each morning for 10 minutes to evaluate your day. Don’t focus on your thoughts but try to sit in between your thoughts. Take regular breaks in the form of holidays or even meditation. Spend at least 1 hour a day away from computers and digital interrupters. You have everything you need inside of you, you just need to remove the struggles and obstacles. These changes have to become a pattern, they can’t be done one as a fix-all cure. Quotes: "You can’t give to others what’s not flowing through you." "Energy follows attention." "Focus on one thing at a time." "You have everything you need already inside of you." "It’s difficult to hear the message until you’ve hit the bump in the road." Today Diane talks to Ishika Answani, a spiritual psychologist who is based in Dubai. Diane and Ishika met while studying at the University of Santa Monica and bonded over their love of spiritual psychology. In this episode Ishika discusses the difference between honoring your choices versus following habitual patterns. You must be mindful of the habits you’re cultivating before the habits that don’t support your well-being are hard to change. Anything you do repeatedly can become a ritual and a habit which is fine, however you must make sure that these habits are self-honoring and not harming your state of well-being. Ishika Aswani counsels people in all matters of life including financial, relationships, body issues and radiant health and well-being. Through this work she uses the two tools of spiritual psychology; soul and behavior to help her clients align their inner experience with the outside world. What you will learn: Radiant health and well-being is not just physical Well-being is also mental, financial and emotional Anything you do repeatedly can become a ritual and then a habit Mentality is habitual thinking Attitude is a habitual feeling Behavior is a mix of habitual thinking and feeling If we carry guilt around a habit, it is not self-honoring and will harm our well-being Habits aren’t just mannerisms; they are mental patterns habituated into a way of thinking about ourselves. Snapping out of a habitual pattern is important so that you can make more conscious choices. Neutral awareness of habits. Intention is important Aligning your thoughts and actions Quotes: "I don't see much value in taking a huge leap in a new direction, all at once." "Habits can catch up with us." "I think that self-improvement is overrated." "Everything you need, you have it in you." "It's making your habits work for you." Today Diane asks an important question about when you should step up to a challenge and when you should hold your values at a higher importance than the task in front of you. To exemplify this decision Diane talks about an experience from her past where she was asked to take on a job last minute and help a client effect change in 5 days! Diane explores the thought process of realizing that completing a job badly would actually compromise her integrity and how she made the decision to walk away with her credibility intact. This was despite being offered even more money to stay on the job. Sometimes you have to value yourself and your mental health more than any money. What you will learn: Diane teaches change. She was given a job where she had to turn a company around in 1 week. There was no foundational training or consultant support. Diane felt bad about leaving and stated her case to the consulting company. She was offered more money to stay. You know you’re not living your values if something doesn’t feel right. You need to be honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do. All the stress left Diane’s body when driving home – this was a sign she was doing the right thing. Quotes: I was out of integrity with myself You have all the tools inside of you We all want to be in alignment with life and what we have to do Contact Diane Email Diane: feedback@dianerandallconsults.com Website: http://www.dianerandallconsults.com Let us know what you think about this episode by leaving a voice mail or comment: http://www.balanced-living-for-busy-professionals.com
Today Diane interviews Susie Miller to discuss improving relationships from “boardroom to bedroom” and how to make time in your day for the people you love. Susie explains her PROFIT method for helping busy professionals work on their relationships while still striving in their career. Susie draws on personal experience to give her advice and Diane discusses her own particular interest in this topic relating to her past. Diane and Susie also examine ways you can ask the people around you for help by highlighting the time when they value your company the most. The advice in this episode is particularly for Type A personalities who might need to be reminded that the most important relationship is the one with themselves; looking after yourself helps to sustain your other relationships. Susie is a professional counselor who moved into life coaching after a sudden illness made her re-evaluate the levels of stress in her career. She has clients all over the world and published her first book in 2015, the second book is expected in early-2016. What you will learn: Susie Miller has a Masters degree in counseling and now works as a Life and Relationship Coach. To maximize your relationships you need to recognize the value they have in every area of life. You need to work on relationships now, and not “when I get to X” in your career. The PROFIT method is an acronym covering ways to work on your relationships while still striving in your career; P – Priorities, invest your time intentionally R – Reconnect, rekindle your relationships O – Open-up, don’t bottle those feelings F – Focus, there’s no such thing as multitasking in your relationships I – Intentional Interactions, set your alarm to not miss important events T – Tenacity, you can’t fix everything immediately It’s not about the amount of time you spend with someone, but the amount of presence you bring. Treat your relationships like a garden; without nurturing they will wither. Build margins into your day so you’re ready to engage when you get home. Take one step at a time, huge change through small steps. You need to look after yourself to sustain relationships. Quotes: Sometimes relationships take the backseat to the busyness of life It’s not about the same amount of time, but the same amount of presence. These relationships are the “why” behind what we’re doing. You need nose-to-nose time. Are you making commitments that you really don’t want to make or participating in activities because “everyone else is”? Diane takes a close look with Amy at what “real food and whole food” is and how they make a difference in your health and well being. Traumatic events happen all the time, and the secret is knowing how to “bounce forward” and transform the negative events into dynamic growth and greater good. Diane and best selling author, Michaela Haas talk about over coming trauma and “post-traumatic growth”. What is “post traumatic growth”? Post traumatic growth is the benefit we can derive from experiencing a crisis. Almost every trauma survivor thinks that they could never lead a happy life again, however, the science of post traumatic growth offers an entirely new perspective of trauma and plenty of healing strategies. This perspective of the growth mindset makes a tremendous difference: if you show people how they can grow, they likely will. Today Diane and Michaela take you through the steps needed to “bounce forward”. Today Diane talks with Dr. Tracey Marks about signs that you’re tipping the balance between the normal ups and downs of life and actual depression or burnout. Busy people overlook building enough margins into their day and end up sacrificing sleep by working late, getting up too early, working while in bed and generally believing that sleep isn’t or should be a priority. It’s easy to cut things way too close and see doing nothing as a waste of time, but if you fill every waking hour with a brain intensive activity, like checking email or surfing the web, then your mind doesn’t get a chance to unwind and it will start to rebel against you – building margins in to your time that support your healthy sleep pattern is a critical part of balanced living. Dr. Tracey has a specific focus on lifestyle management; sleep challenges and the mind/body connection. In addition to Beyond Burnout, she has a private practice based in Atlanta. Dr. Tracey is a regular contributor to leading publications such as The Huffington Post and Bedtime Network, and has appeared as a psychiatric expert on CNN and HLN. Today Diane shares an interview she participated in with the Chicago Raw Food Community about her strategies in overcoming food addiction, and developing a healthy plant based food lifestyle.
