Michaela Haas, Ph.D., an award-winning reporter and author of three non-fiction books, wrote her most recent book looking for answers to a chronic health issue she experienced. Two psychologists, Richard G. Tedeschi, Ph.D., and Lawrence Calhoun, Ph.D., coined the term "post-traumatic growth" from their work with survivors. Michaela wondered how other people navigate through trauma, illness, and death. In "Bouncing Forward: The Art and Science of Cultivating Resilience," Michaela interviews iconic "mavens of post-traumatic growth," including Writer and Civil Rights Activist Mia Angelou, ex-POW Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum, famed jazz guitarist and Holocaust survivor Coco Schumann, Buddhist Teacher Roshi Bernie Glassman, and many more.Michaela gravitated toward Mia Angelou's definition of resilience. As opposed to bouncing forward, resilience explains that we can never bounce back; we will never be the same after that loss, but we can forge a path ahead, and it's not something that happens immediately. She discovered a change in five different areas of their lives:Personal strengthDeeper relationships with othersNewer perspectives on lifeA new appreciation for lifeA change of spiritualityMichaela emphasizes that one of the essential components of resilience is joining like community and sharing your experience. "No one can do it on their own," she said. "Finding support is the most crucial step." She now defines herself as a solutions journalist, seeking stories of effective, reproducible solutions to society's most pressing issues.Michaela is a contributing editor for David Byrne's Reasons to be Cheerful and has been writing for the New York Times, AlJazeera, Rotary International, the Huffington Post, CBS, and numerous other media. Former Navy fighter pilot Captain Charlie Plumb is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Scheduled to be his 75th and final mission in Vietnam, Charlie's F-4 Phantom Jet was shot down + captured. He'd spend the next 2,103 days isolated + tortured in North Vietnamese Prisoner of War camps. Four years ago I had the honor of having Charlie on the show + during our conversation, he deeply moved me when he attributed his survival to his faith and ability to forgive. Today, I'm sharing a fresh cut of this episode with you because the lessons within it have never been more relevant: Purpose provides the strength to endure the unthinkable  Appreciating the value of challenge No matter how your 2021 has looked so far, Charlie's story will remind you that the best is yet to come. SHOW NOTES: “Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.” ― Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning The POWs held captive the longest came back with a lower rate of PTSD because great leadership unified us under a mission statement: Return with honor. Charlie mentions past guest Michaela Haas and how we can actually cultivate resilience through post traumatic grown. Learn more on Live Inspired Podcast ep. 4 here. Against therapists advice, Charlie was never bitter about his first wife filing for divorce without his knowledge and instead chose to appreciate how it fueled his hope to survive. Captain Charlie Plumb's advice for those who feel imprisoned: Look at the value of challenge. Adversity is a horrible thing to waste. Take a risk + get outside your comfort zone. Build a community of support. My conversation with Captain Charlie Plumb first aired in May 2017. Listen to that here.

Today, Laurie joins us to talk about how to live inspired after our personal tragedies. Whether divorce, bankruptcy, a natural disaster or anything in between: A "trauma" is anything that leaves you feeling like you've lost your control, your safety or your identity. My friends, we've all had challenges. Today's episode will directly help you overcome yours. SHOW NOTES: If you like this podcast, you will love Live Inspired IN STUDIO. Dr. Laurie Nadel shared how she was able to better relate to her mother after learning about the Myers Briggs personality types. Dr. Laurie Nadel's first book was a 4-time bestseller + on Oprah's book club twice: Sixth Sense: The Whole-Brain Book of Intuition, Hunchies, Gut Feelings, and Their Place in Your Everyday Life  "This book changes lives, in terms of understanding how how you think and process who you are." Her most recent book came out in April 2018: The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes "This is a tool for people in the midst of tragedy. Open it and something will pop out you can use for self care." The 5 Gifts: humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, growth.  Something like a school shooting or natural disaster, they rip away the fabric of what we thought normal was. When they occur, we have to find a way of balancing in the midst of emotional chaos for sometime. You can swipe it away when you see it on your screen, but when it happens to you in real life, you can’t change the channel. At a certain point you're out of shock and can start to think about next week instead of just getting through the day. When we start to feel like we can get through a week is when we have the strength or enlarged capacity to connect with people as a result of what we’ve been through. Three Cycles of Loss (when you can't go back to who you were before the injury, car accident, bankruptcy, tragic event): Loss of control of your physical environment. Loss of safety, you may be emotionally fragile. Loss of identity / who you are now. For another "Live Inspired" take on this topic, check out Ep. #4 with Michaela Haas as she explores + explains: Post Traumatic Growth. DR. LAURIE NADEL’S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Catcher in the Rye and Catch 22. These two seminal books of the 60s have characters who are authentic and think in questions. They question authority. I admire them and hope I never stop questioning.  2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? My imagination has been tempered by reality and the real world. I was an excellent creative writer, I made up stories. I wish I had a more active imagination. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I would have grabbed the original edition of the Wizard of Oz that I was saving for my grandchildren. The beautiful books from my childhood were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Dan Rather, I’m fortunate and privileged that he has been my mentor, believer and supporter of my book. I’m always fascinated by what he has to say with where we are now in America as compared to all of the cycles he has seen in the course of his lifetime and what we can learn from that to move forward and be more empathetic. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Dan always gives me great advice: Just keep writing. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Calm down a little bit. I was definitely wild. I wouldn’t want to clip her wings or put the breaks on, but I have a lot of people who come into my practice for therapy in their mid to late 20s because what we learn during this season is that the rules of life and family culture we learn through childhood don’t always apply to the world at large. The world is very different when you actually get out there and have to make your way in it. Be careful but be open. 7. "We found ourselves in parachutes floating down over enemy territory." Charlie Plumb spent his impoverished yet idyllic childhood in Kansas "kicking cans and playing in the light of the moon.” When it was time for college, he won a scholarship and hopped on a Greyhound bus to the military academy in Annapolis. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he immediately married his high school sweet heart and went onto flight training. In 1963 he was in Vietnam and on his 75th mission, his plane was shot down. Charlie says what got him through captivity was his "why" or his purpose -- coming home safely to his bride. Years later when he finally got off enemy soil and called her, she shared that she had filed for divorce and was engaged to another man. Charlie was never bitter. He didn't regret not knowing that his wife had moved on. "I thought, how can I be unhappy? I’ve just been released from prison. 24/7 I didn’t know if I’d be alive [and today I'm free] you can’t rain on my parade." Charlie's spirit captivated John and Charlie is one of the reasons John so vulnerably shares his story today. In honor of Memorial Day, it is our honor to share the story of Charlie Plumb, an American Hero. He will inspire you to never take your freedom or life for granted.  SHOW NOTES: Charlie learned about forgiveness from his mom and discipline from his dad. Both were qualities he needed to survive the prison camps.  Critical to suriving: Keeping your sense of humor Finding a way to communicate with each other. "The importance of the communication wasn't the thought we were passing around it was the validation of another human being. Having faith that there was a purpose to this [being shot down]. Remembering you have a choice. The first few months I was bitter. But I realized I was killing myself by not knowing my purpose. I figured if their was a why, I’d find a way to so survive. Those there longest (POWs) came back with a lower rate of PTSD because great leadership unified us under a mission statement: Return with honor. (Listen here to past podcast guest, Michaela Haas, expert on Post Traumatic Growth.) What was your why/purpose? My bride. I planned our next 20 years on how I’d make it up to her. People ask if I wish I'd known she was going to divorce me. No, planning 20 birthdays, anniversaries, etc. is what got me through. Therapists told me: You gotta get bitter! The longer you wait the more difficult it will be and you’ll have a mental break down. My thought process: How can I be unhappy? I’ve just been released from prison. 24/7 I didn’t know if I’d be alive - you can’t rain on my parade. I ran into the man who packed my parachute. He said. "I’m not the only parachute packer in your life. Your parents, big sister, little brother, preacher, coaches, they are the ones who allowed you safe descent and passage through those 6.5 years." Who packs your parachute? Whose are you packing? Advice for anyone in-prisoned: Look at the value of challenge. Adversity is a horrible thing to waste. Don’t blame other people for your problems, because away goes your opportunity to be better bc of the problem you’re facing.  Get Charlie's book I'm No Hero here. Learn more about Charlie at www.CharliePlumb.com    CHARLIE PLUMB'S LIVE INSPIRED 7  1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible, chapter of Job. Unbroken, it epitomizes your philosophy and mine on winning through adversity.  2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? Bolder Crest supports vets with PTSD to expand their reach bc they’re doing a lot of good for veterans. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A tin cup with holes in it that I brought back from the prison camp. I keep that cup just to remind me of the challenges I face and the value of the challenge. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My mother. She endured so much while I was over there, but never placed blame. I never heard her say a bad word about anyone. The longer I live, the more I appreciate her approach to forgiveness. I'd love to talk to her about how to forgive the unforgivable. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? A coach told me it wasn’t the things around me that would change my life, it’s the choices you make about the things around you. You can choose to be a loser or a winner or choose to give away that choice. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Believe in a purpose as the highest priority. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? He was a servant. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast anywhere you get your podcasts. Let's move our focus from the cold winter to where the sun is shining: Spring! One of my favorite parts of spring is March Madness. I love sports, I love baseball and I love the race to the final game (especially when the underdog wins).  Most importantly, after the final game, I love when they play the Luther Vandross song, One Shining Moment, while showing the highlights of the best plays from the entire tournament. They tie it all together and today, I am going to do something similar for you.  On today's episode, I'll recap each of my guests from Season 1 and my main takeaway from each. So many great tips on living inspired. Here we go! Susan O'Leary [my mom, author, speaker, mother, Christian leader] Mom  helped me kick off the season talking about life, the fire that change everything and her insights on resilience, faith, family and redemption.   Brian Buffini [business owner, speaker & author] He shared the question his grandfather asked when reviewing work for the family painting business: "Can you put your name on it?" If the answer wasn't yes it had to be fixed. That tangible work ethic is the foundation of Brian's success today. Teri Griege [author, ironman athlete, cancer survivor] Addiction and cancer threatened her life; grace, endurance and hope gave it back. Teri will remind you what is TRULY possible when you stop making excuses. Joe Buck [World Series sports announcer, son of my hero Jack, author] Had his his first interview about his new book Lucky Bastard with us! He shared about being the son of my hero, the greatest gift he received from his daughter which offered us all a reminder that: Perspective truly matters. Michaela Haas [author, journalist, fellow sojourner] Her book Bouncing Forward was my favorite this year covering a life-changing topic: "Post traumatic growth." Rory Vaden [bestselling author and self-discipline expert] "Discipline becomes dormant in the absence of a dream; so DREAM BIG." And SO MANY amazing nuggets like this one. Dave Ramsey [bestselling author, nationally syndicated radio host] You do not want to miss this opportunity to hear Dave on the other side of the microphone! He shares amazing humility, humor and financial tips. Kathy Buckley [author, speaker, comedian, overcomer] She is a model for keeping joy, humor, determination and passion for people through life's tribulations. As a deaf comedian, she has garnered special tools she shares with us to improve our own relationships and lives. Don Yaeger [9 time bestselling author; journalist] Wrote 25 books, many nonfiction about some of the biggest names in sports history. Don shares the biggest lessons he learned from these legendary people.  Rachel Macy Stafford [NYT Bestselling author and founder of Hands Free Mama] Shares beautiful lessons about setting aside daily distractions so that you can have your best life today. She asks us a poignant question: How will you redefine your success for yourself this year? Tom Ziglar [Son of Zig, bestselling author, podcaster, CEO of Ziglar Inc.] Tom will walk you through the "zombie cure" or sleep walking through life. Today's guest is former St. Louis Blues Hockey hero, Gino Cavallini. You'll love hearing the live reunion from my ON FIRE book launch party. No matter what you are going through, you will get through it. I met today’s guest, German-born, bestselling author, journalist and teacher of resilience Michaela Haas, earlier this year when she interviewed me for her column in the “New York Times of Germany.” Michaela wanted to share about my book ON FIRE because in her writing and research, she focuses on the topic of Post Traumatic Growth. I was so enamored with this topic that I immediately got a copy of her book Bouncing Forward and invited her to be on this podcast! Through the pages of her book and my time interviewing her, I met some of my new, favorite heroes; each of whom are amazing examples of Living Inspired. Michaela will give you so much to think about today! Most importantly: No matter what you’re going through, her research shows, you WILL get through it. But you have to work for it. You have to reach out. You have to speak out. And you have to make space to confront your pain. Learn more about the fascinating Coco Schumann here. If you've not read it, order Michaela's favorite book by Maya Angelou Why the Cage Bird Sings here. Order Michaela's book Bouncing Forward here. The LIVE INSPIRED 7 segment is a series of 7 questions, shared "rapid fire" and answered boldly (without prep!) by our guests. My hope is to leave you reflecting on our guest's answers and YOUR answers... and excited to apply ideas from today's show to help you live an inspired life.  Michaela Haas' Live Inspired 7 1. What is the best book you ever read? Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? First, I would mourn him. Second, I am a rescuer so I would donate most of the money to good causes that rescue people (suicide prevention, trauma prevention) and some to rescue animals. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My sister-in-law lost her 3-year-old daughter. We have a recording of her voice that says "you're my best friend" it's in a little cube with her picture. I would definitely grab that cube. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Buddha. I am a Buddhist and no one really knows what his true words were because no one wrote them down during his lifetime. So to have an opportunity to actually speak with him, that would be wonderful! 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Let go. Easily said though very hard to do. But when I hold onto injustice or loss - I repeat this to myself because there is really no other choice anyway. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Appreciate life. I had so many worries then - but I had it all! I was healthy. Following my dreams and pursuing my career and travelling the world. I wish that instead of having my mind full of worry, that I would have been more grateful and present. 7. It's been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Love. Light. She made a difference. ***  If you enjoyed today's episode, subscribe, rate and review this podcast on iTunes and anywhere you get your podcasts! Traumatic events happen all the time, and the secret is knowing how to “bounce forward” and transform the negative events into dynamic growth and greater good. Diane and best selling author, Michaela Haas talk about over coming trauma and “post-traumatic growth”. What is “post traumatic growth”? Post traumatic growth is the benefit we can derive from experiencing a crisis. Almost every trauma survivor thinks that they could never lead a happy life again, however, the science of post traumatic growth offers an entirely new perspective of trauma and plenty of healing strategies. This perspective of the growth mindset makes a tremendous difference: if you show people how they can grow, they likely will. Today Diane and Michaela take you through the steps needed to “bounce forward”.  Books: Bouncing Forward: Transforming Bad Breaks into Breakthroughs - Michaela Haas PhD Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.com/Bouncing-Forward-Transforming-Breaks-Breakthroughs/dp/150111512X   Contact Diane: Email me at: feedback@DianeRandallConsults.com Visit the website: http://www.dianerandallconsults.com Tell us what you think about this episode by leaving a comment or voice mail: http://www.balanced-living-for-busy-professionals.com

Brigadier General, Dr. Rhonda Cornum is tough and gentle.  I find the two are often a package deal.   In today's interview with  Brigadier General and Physician Rhonda Cornum, we will learn that resilience can be taught, learned and even mastered. However, here is the best part...whether you are a civilian or in the military or even feel like the walking wounded today’s episode is for you. After surviving a helicopter crash while on a rescue mission during the first Iraq war General Cornum was then taken prisoner. if that isn’t a petri dish to test one’s resilience, I don’t know what is.  Gen. Cornum is well acquainted with the double-edged sword of hardship, but as you will soon learn, she is also adamant about not being defined by those experiences... except in terms of lessons learned. When Dr. Cornum returned back to the States after being rescued, people were often confused when she would explain that instead of experiencing PTSD, she felt stronger because of her experience. As Dr. Michaela Haas notes in her book Bouncing Forward, in the early 1990s, the term “post traumatic growth” had not yet been discovered. Instead of blindly accepting what some consider constricting labels that trauma survivors are given, Dr. Cornum focused on re-claiming the agency over what she could control. Before she retired from the military, Dr. Cornum developed the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program, which not only helps boost resilience in troops, but can help all of us in everyday life. Rhonda’s story is a reminder that the human spirit is capable of surmounting unimaginable challenges, and that if anything, living through a near-death situation can make life that much more precious and cherished.

Dr. Michaela Haas has written an important book, "Bouncing Forward."  Most of us are familiar with PTSD, but post traumatic growth may be a new concept altogether. The idea of post traumatic growth suggests that we’ll grow after a trauma...all you have to do is experience one for that to be questionable at least while it’s occurring.  The fact is that research is proving that there is growth especially and even after trauma. And, trauma comes in many iterations.  We have probably all experienced trauma in one form or another: from losing a loved one to being in a car crash. Dr. Michaela Haas has not only researched post-traumatic growth...she has also experienced it first hand.  She has consolidated twelve stories of resilience, growth and wisdom in her recently released book, Bouncing Forward and she is here during this episode to share much of what she has learned.  Dr. Haas proposes a different way to look at crisis; that while there is undoubtedly immense pain, there is also potential breakthrough and a silver lining.
