Episode 3947: Joshua Becker reflects on how intentionally giving up a controlling influence for forty days can become a powerful path to self-discipline, humility, and clarity about what truly matters. By stepping away from everyday habits like fast food, social media, or television, we gain deeper empathy, stronger self-control, and a renewed perspective on our time, money, and priorities. His reflections reveal how a simple seasonal practice can spark lasting personal growth. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.becomingminimalist.com/the-opportunity-of-lent/ Quotes to ponder: "It is a humbling exercise to battle controlling influences in our lives. We are forced to stand face-to-face with our weaknesses and our humanity." "Just like a muscle, self-control grows stronger through use and exercise." Today we're putting The Tonearm's needle on musician and composer Erik Hall.Based in Michigan, Erik Hall has spent the last five years doing something that sounds simple but definitely is not: recording landmark works of contemporary classical music entirely on his own.Erik's 2020 solo reconstruction of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians won the Libera Award for Best Classical Record. Reich wrote to tell him he'd reinvented the piece. A 2023 interpretation of Simeon ten Holt's Canto Ostinato followed, and now Hall has completed the trilogy. Solo Three came out in January on Western Vinyl, and it takes on works by Glenn Branca, Charlemagne Palestine, Laurie Spiegel, and Reich again—every note performed and recorded by Hall himself, no loops, no sequencers.Erik is here to walk us through the project and the thinking behind it. Kelsey Green discusses the detrimental effects of excessive screen time on focus, creativity, and mental health, particularly among youth. She shares her journey from a background in environmental conservation to becoming a consultant focused on digital minimalism. The discussion covers the challenges of navigating a digital business landscape, the impact of technology on interpersonal relationships, and strategies for setting boundaries with screens. Kelsey emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, presence, and community in reclaiming autonomy from technology. The research is sobering: We check screens an average of over 250 times a day. Screen use is linked to increased anxiety, reduced attention span, inability to focus, and a shrinking capacity to sit withdiscomfort and our own thoughts. We are more digitally connected than ever, and sadly more isolated, distracted, and depleted than we've ever been. This experiment in presence will help elucidate your relationship to your devices, and where you may need to address your use of them, in order to reset your nervous system, boost creativity, and rebuild real connection, with yourself and with others. Kelsey L. Green is an aspiring digital minimalist, strategist, speaker, and community builder on a mission to help people reclaim their focus, creativity, and in-person connections.Kelsey L. Green works at the intersection of community, strategy, and accountability, helping people stop stalling and start building lives that truly light them up. She's the creatorof Summit in Six, a high-accountability Mastermind, and How to Build Your Circle, a course focused on cultivating meaningful in-person connection.Known for her vibrant energy, sharp insight, and deep belief in what's possible, Kelsey blends vision with structure; heart with humor. Her talks explore themes like digital minimalism to reclaim focus, creativity, joyful work and mental health; inviting audiences to quiet the noise, find their footing, and take the next bold steps toward their own summit.Kelsey explores how our digital habits impact our relationships, attention, and sense of fulfillment, and how setting simple boundaries can open space for what really matters. With humor, insight, and a deep belief in human potential, she reminds people that a lot of the good stuff in life still happens face-to-face and when we strengthen the connection to ourselves.Community is more essential than ever—and yet, it's never felt harder to build. I help people create the kind of meaningful, supportive relationships we all need—real circles of community rooted in trust, alignment, and belonging. Whether you're navigating a transition, craving deeper friendships, or simply trying to find “your people” in a noisy, disconnected world, I'll help you build that circle—fromthe inside out. While many things tend to decline with age, there's one common decline that you're probably not thinking about. Because almost nobody talks about it. But it's tremendously important if you want to be more independent and physically capable than most people your age when you're older. It's a decline that can be delayed and slowed down if you're one of the few people in the know. www.healthcouragecollective.comhealthcouragecollective@gmail.comAre you ready to give your cells their best chance to not have to stop living before they die by allowing them access to physiologic levels of hormones, but aren't sure how to even get started? This week on Jumpscare! we're discussing Nadja from 1994, Nadja is a hypnotic dive into downtown noir—where vampires brood in black-and-white and love feels as cold as immortality. Directed by Michael Almereyda and produced by David Lynch, this indie gem blends art-house style with gothic romance in the shadows of New York City. With a haunting performance by Elina Löwensohn as the mysterious Nadja and an unforgettable cameo from Peter Fonda as Van Helsing, the film feels like a dream you're not sure you want to wake from. Moody. Minimalist. Mesmerizing. If you love vampire lore with an avant-garde edge, this cult classic belongs on your watchlist. This week on the podcast, Zach welcomes Kat Shoulders to the podcast for a long overdue collection update. Both Zach and Kat have picked up some new watches in the last few months, and in this conversation they dig into what they picked up and why, and the stories behind the purchases themselves. There's some fun overlap here, but still plenty of variety. We'll think you'll enjoy the conversation. We want to know what you've picked up recently as well, so please let us know in the show notes if you've added a new watch to your collection recently, or purged some rarely worn pieces to make room for a future addition. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast on all major platforms including Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and more. If you're tired of decluttering the same spaces over and over again, this conversation will feel like a breath of fresh air. In this episode, I'm joined by Katy Wells, the voice behind the Maximized Minimalist and author of Making Home Your Happy Place to talk about why clutter keeps coming back and how to finally break the cycle. Katy shares the moment she realized her home was pulling her away from being the “yes mom” she wanted to be, and how true change didn't come from better bins or checklists, but from getting to the root of her clutter. We talk about your “stuff story,” the difference between mess and clutter (hint: mess is expected), and the four types of clutter that require different strategies. If you've ever thought, “I'm just not organized” or felt shame about the state of your home, this episode will encourage you. Letting go isn't a personality trait, it's a skill you can learn. And with a few tiny tweaks and the right questions, you really can create a home that feels like your happy place. Mentioned in This Episode:
In this Head-to-Head episode of the Acceptable Accuracy Podcast, Philip and Tyler debate Minimalist vs. Geared-Out setups for multi-gun and tactical adventure challenges. From plate carriers and gun builds to belt configurations, they break down the tradeoffs between mobility and redundancy, speed and sustainment, and skill versus support under fatigue. The episode wraps with rapid-fire lessons learned and one big question: are you under-geared, over-geared, or properly prepared for the problems you're training to solve?
The Minimalists talk about finding work-life balance, knowing when it's time to leave a job that is emotionally exhausting, ergonomic home-office tips, why you don't want new things (and what you actually want instead) and much more! Discussed in this episode: How do I know when a job I love has become career clutter? (2:38) When does the work you love get in the way of the life you love? (20:17) Right Here, Right Now: The return of Simplehaven, and T.K.'s debate with Destiny. (45:11) Listener Tip: Ergonomic home-office advice. (52:09) Have a question for the show? Author David Foster Wallace is credited with a story in a commencement speech, where he shares, "There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says 'Morning, boys. How's the water?' And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and says 'What the hell is water?'" We live in a culture where the expectation is to have absolutely everything. And more. Obviously there is a material cost to everything. Money. And it takes time to make money. So we cost ourselves a lot of work to afford all the stuff. But regardless. Even if you win the lottery and can easily afford anything. Having stuff takes up our mental space, and I don't think we consider this. I sure didn't. I was just like the fish. Stuff? What stuff? I don't feel I bought things needlessly. Or for status. I had a big family. If we felt we needed something? Get it. Maybe get two. If someone might need it, let's have it on hand. This had its value. But my gosh. There is just stuff. Everywhere. I ultimately felt so tied down by it all. So, my guest is Joshua Becker, the founder and editor of Becoming Minimalist, a website dedicated to inspiring others to find more life by owning less. His websites welcome over 1M readers each month and have inspired millions around the world to consider the practical benefits of owning fewer possessions and given them the practical help to get started. He is an international speaker and the #1 Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of several books, the newest of which is, Uncluttered Faith: Own Less, Love More, and Make an Impact in Your World. I am on a constant quest to…pair down. Yesterday, as of this recording, I accompanied two of my daughters in talking through everything in their rooms. Rooms I think most would feel were sparse. The result of questioning each item? Two trash bags and two boxes full of clothes and…stuff. And an entire big bag of trash. Feels like a breath of fresh air. Space to…contemplate. Create. EP 677 Josh Smith – MKC What’s up! This week on the Rich Outdoors Podcast, I’m sitting down with Josh Smith—founder of Montana Knife Company and honestly one of the most inspiring entrepreneurs in the outdoor space right now. This is a podcast I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and we did not disappoint. Josh went from being a lineman for the power company, making knives on the side in a 200 square foot shop in his horse pasture, to building one of the most beloved brands in the hunting industry from the ground up. No investors, no conglomerates, no selling out. Just a guy who refused to quit and built something that hunters actually care about. We talk about the origin story of MKC, why he saw a massive hole in the hunting knife market, and how he quietly infiltrated the hunting community like a Green Beret special ops team before anyone even knew he was there. We get into the Benchmade lawsuit and why his entire team cheered when they found out they were getting sued. We dive deep into building company culture at scale, hiring the right people, why listening to your customer beats watching your competitor every single time, and why most people have no idea how many hunters have never even heard of a brand they think everyone knows about. But this one goes way beyond knives. We talk about Bridger Watch, building a product in a category dominated by giants, the parallels between what Josh built and what we’re trying to build, and the advice he gave me that I’m going to be thinking about for a long time. We also talk about legacy—knives that get passed down, stories behind the blades, and why sometimes the most important tool isn’t the most impressive one, it’s the one that means something. This is one of those conversations that reminds you why you started. Whether you’re a hunter, an entrepreneur, or both—this episode is for you. Let’s get into it. Interested in the Bridger Watch? If you heard us talk about the smartwatch we’re building for hunters and want to be the first to know what we’re up to—head over to bridgerwatch.com and get on the list. Three years in the making and we’re just getting started. Go check it out. Episode Sponsors Tricer Tripods – They make gear that’s fast, light, and simple, from amazing tripods to bino mounts, panhead truck mounts, and now even bipods. Trier just dropped their new updated AD and BC tripods, and I got to test the new Tritech technology this year. The center post is now a T-post, which makes it pack down smaller and cleaner—Drew is a mad scientist and he just keeps innovating. If you want to use code TRO, it’ll save you 10% at checkout. Go support a great company. Head over to tricer.com. Stone Glacier – If you’re in the market for a new pack, I ran the Sky Archer 6400 this year and packed out a lot of animals with it including a couple of elk. What I love about Stone Glacier packs is they work great whether you’re on a 10-day backpacking trip or day hunting from the side-by-side. Minimalist, tough, and they work. You don’t need to own multiple packs—this thing does it all. Check it out at stoneglacier.com and use code TRO for a discount. Your product roadmap should be driven entirely by what your customer is telling you they need—not by what the big brand is doing. By the time you react to a competitor, you’re already behind. The companies that win are the ones so locked into their customer’s needs that by the time the big guy realizes what happened, it’s too late. Most People Don’t Know You Exist—And That’s the Opportunity – MKC ran surveys recently and the percentage of hunters who had heard of them was shockingly low. Most companies would find that depressing. Josh and Brandon found it energizing. If you’ve built something great and most of your target market still doesn’t know you exist, you have an enormous runway in front of you. Stop assuming everyone knows your story. Tell it again. Tell it to the 3,000 people in that gymnasium down the road who’ve never heard it. Culture Is Built Intentionally or It Isn’t Built at All – From bringing employees to trade shows as a reward, to reading the Attaboy box out loud at company meetings, to bringing in bankers and health insurance reps to teach employees about life—Josh has built a company where people feel cared about. That doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional decisions every single day to treat your people the way you’d want your own kids to be treated. And when people feel that, they go the extra mile and they keep the culture alive even when you can’t be in every room.

What if the biggest source of stress in your life is not your job, inbox, or finances – but the simple fact that you have too much stuff? This week, my guest is Joshua Fields Millburn, co‑founder of The Minimalists, whose documentaries, books and podcast have inspired millions of people around the world to reconsider their own relationship with possessions and success. Joshua grew up with very little money, in a home marked by addiction, violence and instability and, as a young man, became convinced that the solution was to be found in acquiring ‘more': more income, more status and more material comfort. By the age of 30, he had everything he thought he wanted – the big job title, the nice car, the large house, all the visible signs of having “made it”. And yet, inside, he was anxious, overwhelmed and deeply unhappy. Then, in the space of a single month, his mother died and his marriage ended. Those two events forced him to pause and ask some uncomfortable but essential questions: What am I actually doing with my life? Whose values am I living by? Is this endless consumption really what life is all about? That period of questioning led Joshua towards minimalism – not as a trend or an aesthetic, but as a practical framework for living with greater clarity and intention. in our conversation, we discuss: How external clutter is often an outward reflection of internal clutter Why products so often promise fulfilment but ultimately deliver dissatisfaction The difference between healthy consumption and harmful consumerism Practical rules that make decluttering simpler, including the 30-day minimalism game, the 90/90 approach to clothes and why a “sale price” can often become a “fool's price” How identity clutter keeps us stuck - when we cling to things, roles or labels, not because we need them, but because we're afraid of who we'll be without them How minimalism can improve our health and relationships by creating more time, attention and presence. Joshua is a wonderful human being, a brilliant communicator and someone who thinks deeply about the human experience. He believes that minimalism is the art of “addition through subtraction” - it's not about having less for the sake of it, but about making space for what matters most.
