The San Francisco Giants are suddenly playing awful baseball. After losing two of three in Boston, the Giants were swept in a four-game series in Philadelphia. The SF Giants' offense can't get anything going, and they continue to allow way too many runs. It doesn't help that the Giants lost both of their catchers in this series. Patrick Bailey—arguably the Giants' best position player—is on the concussion IL. The day after Bailey's injury, Giants catcher Tom Murphy sustained a knee injury. Blake Sabol and Jakson Reetz took over as the catchers on the Giants' roster. Mason Black was also added to the SF Giants' roster in a much more positive development. He started today's game and was crisp early on before losing command and giving up several runs later in the outing. Nevertheless, it was a debut with some positives for Black, but a series to forget—and a costly one at that—for the reeling San Francisco Giants.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Trade Buzz: SF Giants Set to Deal J.D. Davis, Joey Bart?

The San Francisco Giants' addition of Matt Chapman certainly made things awkward for incumbent Giants third baseman J.D. Davis. With the SF Giants adding Chapman to the fold, it's hard to see how J.D. Davis cracks the roster. Chapman is here to play third base; shortstop is not going to happen. The DH spot is occupied by Jorge Soler. Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. take up first base for the SF Giants. That leaves J.D. Davis without a starting job and without a spot on the bench.Another player who seemingly needs to be dealt is Joey Bart. For both players, the only way they'd seem to stick on the roster would be in the event of an unfortunate injury. Chapman, Soler, or Flores getting hurt could keep Davis around. For Bart, an injury to Patrick Bailey or Tom Murphy—signed to a two-year deal this offseason to be Bailey's backup—could keep him around, although Blake Sabol may even make the team ahead of the out-of-options Bart even though Sabol can be optioned. If the Giants want to add one more big-name starter (either Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery), they'd have to clear some payroll or else go over the first luxury tax threshold. One player the Giants could trade in order to do so: Michael Conforto. Luis Matos seems deserving of a role in the majors, and Conforto is standing in his way. And his $18M salary could stand in the way of the SF Giants signing one more big-name pitcher, something they need with an inexperienced rotation that continues to get bit by the injury bug. The latest casualty is Sean Hjelle, who will be shut down and re-evaluated in two weeks with an elbow strain.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Marco Luciano as SF Giants' Shortstop: Keith Law's Critical Review -- Agree or Disagree?

The Athletic's Keith Law was on KNBR recently and he criticized the San Francisco Giants' apparent plan to start Marco Luciano at shortstop in 2024, going so far as to call the plan "reckless." Does Law have a point? Are the SF Giants setting Luciano up for failure? Or is Law perhaps not the ultimate authority on the matter? Memorably, Law wrote a piece not too long ago in which he re-drafted the class that yielded Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Christian Yelich, among others. The player Law said he would take first overall? Andrelton Simmons—a shocking decision. So ... maybe Law's words shouldn't always be taken as gospel. He also criticized the SF Giants ahead of the 2010 season, and we all know how that ended up: with the raising of a championship banner. Prospect analysis is a tricky game indeed.Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of the Locked On Giants podcast:If Luis Matos has a good spring, would you trade one of Mike Yastrzemski and Michael Conforto and give Luis an everyday corner spot? Don't understand the logic of starting him at Sac if he has a good spring but basically give Luciano SS without much competition.Do you think we really need Slater? He's basically a one trick pony and was horrible the 2nd half of last year. Between Matos, Blake Sabol, Tyler Fitzgerald, Wade Meckler, and Ramos he's taking up a valuable roster spot and is a FA next year. I just think Ramos deserves a fair shot.Any chance you can discuss the WAR for every teams 1st round pick from the 10 years and how the Hiants would've been better off having not signed a single first round pick in that span? The San Francisco Giants' new backup catcher has been one of the best hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching since 2019. Tom Murphy, who has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $8.25M deal with the SF Giants with a club option for a third year, is a lefty masher who's a perfect complement to Giants primary catcher Patrick Bailey. Murphy's main issue has been staying on the field. But when he's been out there, he's been a forced to be reckoned with against southpaws. The ramifications are plentiful. First of all, the Giants' addition of Murphy—on a multiyear pact, no less—likely means it's the end of the line for Joey Bart with the SF Giants. Bart is importantly out of minor league options, meaning he can no longer be optioned without being exposed to waivers. The Giants' lack of faith in Bart has been evident for years, and their signing of Murphy seemingly seals his fate. Bart will likely be traded at some point before Opening Day. (He has little trade value, for what it's worth). Blake Sabol will also feel the impact of this signing. Last season, because he was a Rule 5 selection, Sabol had the luxury of needing to stay in the majors all season or else be offered back to the Pirates. The SF Giants clearly wanted to avoid that scenario, so Sabol spent the entire season in MLB. Now that that's over, however, Sabol will have a full slate of minor league options. Meaning he likely becomes the Giants' third catcher, with the fact that he has three option years remaining being a huge plus. Sabol showed promise with the bat vs. RHP, and his framing was solid, but he needs to work on his ball blocking, which was a significant issue. The top moments from 2023 are relived on today's Locked On Giants.Kyle Harrison put on a show in his Giants home debut, striking out 11 Reds and showing his ace potential. Another rookie, Patrick Bailey, was often a human highlight reel, particularly on defense, but also his home run that prompted the famous "somebody named Patrick Bailey" quote.Logan Webb and Alex Cobb each had spectacular pitching performances that rank among the season's best moments, including Cobb coming one out shy of a no-hitter, and Webb throwing two complete games on his way to leading the majors in innings pitched. The rest of the best include highlights from the Giants' 10-game winning streak, from a circus play in LA, to a 15-0 route, to a couple of dramatic Mike Yastrzemski homers that were all part of the win streak. The San Francisco Giants' payroll has been a hot topic ever since new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi took over following the 2018 season. Since that time, the Giants' payroll steadily decreased until is eventually stabilized at around $162 million—until this year it shot up by $30 million. The theory that's been discussed on Locked On Giants numerous times is that this $30M increase is likely explained by MLB's sale of BAMTech to Disney for $900 million, which was evenly split among the 30 teams, for a total of $30M per team.Zaidi, however, continues to claim that there's no "cap" on SF Giants spending from ownership, and that it's his job to make recommendations on players to sign and that, in theory, they'd give the green light if Zaidi makes a good enough argument. The pattern described above somewhat suggests otherwise. But there are exceptions. Bryce Harper, for example, was offered $310M by the Giants in Year 1 under Zaidi. Had they signed Harper, the payroll would've been significantly higher than it ended up being in 2019. So it does appear that, for the right player, the San Francisco Giants are likely to make an exception and spend beyond the break-even point, which has been the oft-stated financial goal by high ranking club representatives.Other questions on today's mailbag edition of Locked On Giants include:Do you think they offer Brandon Crawford a bench role next year? Does he play elsewhere? Do they offer him a front office position? Is HE the next manager? Why does Zaidi keep saying the Giants are an attractive place for free agents when they continue to miss on the top guys? The San Francisco Giants' season is all but over. Losing three of four in LA sealed the Giants' fate, even if they're not technically eliminated just yet. The 2023 Giants season certainly had its positives, but the negatives will stand out more. According to a report in The Athletic, the SF Giants may have damaged their reputation this year by quickly moving pitchers Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, and Alex Wood to the bullpen after early struggles, and benching or platooning high-paid players like Mitch Haniger. While there is probably some truth to the Giants' damaged reputation, it shouldn't stem from those examples. All of those players played their way into their roles, with the one exception being Manaea, who probably deserved to go back into the rotation much earlier than the last couple of weeks. Manaea has quietly been very effective for four months, mostly in a "bulk innings" role out of the 'pen. Losing director of pitching Brian Bannister could harm the Giants as well, and could be part of a much larger shakeup with the coaching staff after this failed season. But things weren't all bad this year for the San Francisco Giants. Rookies Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, Tristan Beck, Keaton Winn, Ryan Walker, Blake Sabol, and others were all imperfect in their own ways, but all provided promise for the future. The San Francisco Giants cannot catch a break. What they can catch, unfortunately, are broken bones. Thairo Estrada is the latest Giants player to go down with an injury, as he suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch on Sunday against the Mets. The SF Giants already lost Mitch Haniger to a broken forearm, and they've dealt with numerous soft-tissue injuries to players like Mike Yastrzemski, Michael Conforto, LaMonte Wade Jr., Alex Cobb, and J.D. Davis. Thankfully, Yastrzemski was activated off the IL yesterday and Conforto returned to the lineup after missing a few games with a hamstring issue. It wasn't enough, however, to prevent another Giants loss. Logan Webb was really good over 6.2 innings, striking out 11 Mariners and allowing just two runs, but the San Francisco Giants were shut down offensively outside of Blake Sabol, who hit two impressive home runs. Sabol also cost the Giants a run with a passed ball and wild pitch that should have been blocked. The losses are piling up a bit for the Giants right now, as they've dropped six of their last eight games. They're now tied for the NL's final wild card spot, and their competition continues to win seemingly every night. Per FanGraphs, the Giants' playoff odds have fallen to about 63%, down from about 75% just a few days ago. The Giants need to get back on track and avoid spiraling into the All-Star break. All of these injuries have created opportunities for young players like Luis Matos and Casey Schmitt, but thus far those players haven't really produced.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It wasn't without some controversy, but the San Francisco Giants casually collected their 10th straight win on Wednesday against the Padres. The Giants' winning streak of 10 games is their longest since 2004. The SF Giants' streak began with the team sitting at 32-32, but now they're 10 games over .500 and their playoff odds are skyrocketing. They have a legitimate shot at the NL West, and they're now the No. 1 Wild Card team. The controversy involved the Home Plate Collision rule, and it was actually not all that controversial. Padres catcher Gary Sánchez blocked Giants baserunner Blake Sabol's path to the plate before he was in possession of the baseball. Case closed—that's a violation of the rule. Like it or not, the rule is the rule, and the Giants took advantage. Sabol was ruled safe, and the Giants went on to score two additional runs in the inning. So the play had a huge impact on the game, which ended with a final score of 4-2.Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski was banged up in the process. He injured his left hamstring in that inning that was extended and had to leave the game. An MRI revealed only inflammation, which is a best case scenario. Yaz is hopeful to avoid the injured list, so he's in a similar kind of purgatory as SF Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., who's nursing a side injury but hasn't been placed on the IL. Those two are obviously very key players for the Giants and they can't afford to lose them. Bryce Johnson was recalled prior to today's game, and Sean Hjelle was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

There's something special happening with the 2023 San Francisco Giants. With another dramatic come-from-behind win against the Padres last night, the SF Giants have firmly established themselves as a team that's capable of coming back to win games. The Giants looked dead in the water for much of the game, stymied by Padres starter Michael Wacha, but a coupe of solo homers and good pitching in the middle innings kept them in the game, and the Giants rallied for two in the ninth to tie and ended it on Mike Yastrzemski's three-run, walk-off home run into McCovey Cove.Giants rookies have helped to revitalize this team, and they have their fingerprints all over last night's win. Patrick Bailey threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. trying to steal third with no outs in the first after his leadoff double. Bailey later had a huge sacrifice fly to tie the game in the ninth. Blake Sabol drew a huge leadoff walk to set up with two-run ninth. Luis Matos' sac fly moved Yaz to third and set up Bailey's game-tying sacrifice. Keaton Winn looked like a legitimate MLB starter, and Kevin Gausman impersonator, firing five innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen. And finally, Giants manager Gabe Kapler played a large part in this win. He made aggressive pinch-hit decisions that ultimately paid off. He got J.D. Davis two plate appearances after he pinch hit for Crawford. He used a pinch hitter for a pinch hitter in the ninth, first bringing out Austin Slater to face a lefty before the Padres countermoved with a righty, before Kapler finally counter-countermoved with Blake Sabol, who led off with that key walk. And with the game tied in the top of the 10th, Kapler intentionally walked Juan Soto, a risky move putting another free runner on base, but it paid off as Camilo Doval was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run, setting up Yaz's dramatic walk-off cove shot in the bottom of the frame.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It's unfortunate that it took an injury, but the San Francisco Giants' young, electric prospect Luis Matos is very likely to make his MLB debut on Wednesday after Mitch Haniger sustained a right forearm fracture after being hit by a pitch in a Giants win. Haniger will surely need weeks, if not months, to heal, and that swings the door wide open for Matos, who's been on an unbelievable tear in Triple-A. Matos is just 21 years old—the youngest player in Triple-A—and assuming he makes his debut, he will be MLB's second-youngest position player. Matos was regarded by prospect evaluators as a top prospect a couple of years ago, but injuries and poor performance took some shine off last year. But the SF Giants farmhand has come back with a vengeance in 2023, tearing it up in Double-A and doing the same in Triple-A at such a young age. Now Matos is likely to join Patrick Bailey, Casey Schmitt, Keaton Winn (who earned a save in his MLB debut tonight), Ryan Walker, and Blake Sabol among Giants youngsters to debut this season. It's an exciting time to be a Giants fan again, particularly with several of these young players performing well. And we haven't even seen Matos or potential star pitcher Kyle Harrison yet. Suddenly, things are exciting and the SF Giants' future is looking bright. Oh by the way, the Giants blew out the Cardinals, improved to three games over .500, and have sole possession of the NL's final wild card spot.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Well, the San Francisco Giants' weekend certainly wasn't boring. On Friday the Giants were shut down by Marcus Stroman. On Saturday, they came ever so close to being no-hit by soft-tosser Kyle Hendricks. And then on Sunday, when the Giants needed a win pretty badly, they pummeled the Cubs 13-3 to salvage an otherwise disappointing series. The SF Giants are one game over .500 and their position in the West and Wild Card standings is explored in detail. Also of note, the SF Giants optioned catcher Joey Bart to Triple-A over the weekend. It was the latest setback in the career of Bart in San Francsico, as Patrick Bailey and Blake Sabol appear to have surpassed him on the depth chart. This is the last year in which the Giants can option Bart, so it's very possible that this is his last season in orange and black—if he even makes it through the whole season. Today the Giants announced that Keaton Winn was called up and Tristan Beck was optioned. Winn is a very intriguing starting pitcher who features a good fastball-splitter combo.Luis Matos continues to do ridiculous things for the San Francisco Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento. He hit three homers in his last two games, collecting three hits in each game. Do the SF Giants need to make room for Matos on the major league roster right now? What would that look like? It appears that the Giants simply don't have room on their roster for Matos right now, even though he is absolutely forcing the issue. He may have to wait until an injury creates a spot, or the Giants may at some point decide to make a trade that opens up a spot for the 21-year-old.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Platoon deniers look away. The San Francisco Giants beat the Rockies in dramatic comeback fashion thanks in large part to their platoon system and ability to get favorable matchups in key situations. In the seventh inning, after Michael Conforto walked and Mitch Haniger singled, the Rockies had a choice to make. Let a righty face Mike Yastrzemski and Blake Sabol, or go to a lefty and force the SF Giants to make countermoves. They went to a lefty, and Austin Slater and Wilmer Flores came through with huge hits as pinch hitters, fueling the Giants' 5-4 comeback win.Another key factor in the win was the San Francisco Giants' bullpen. Over the last 30 days, no bullpen has a better ERA than the Giants' bullpen. Pretty much everyone in the 'pen, including players who were heavily criticized for their early season struggles (such as Sean Manaea and Taylor Rogers) has been outstanding over the last month. The Giants' bullpen was key in the win last night, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings after Logan Webb allowed four runs in 5.1 innings.Carson Whisenhunt, who was drafted less than 11 months ago, made his Double-A debut last night and continued to dominate. He's made a meteoric rise through the SF Giants' system and his first start in Richmond was more of the same. Luis Matos, another extremely intriguing prospect who's the youngest player in Triple-A, homered last night to continue to make his case that he belongs in the majors—soon.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants committed $43.5 million to Mitch Haniger in the offseason, expecting him to be the same player he's consistently been whenever he's been healthy enough to be on the field. For the first month or so of the season, the Giants were without Haniger, who injured his oblique (and later his back) as the season got going. But Haniger has been healthy for over a month now, and the SF Giants are still waiting for him to be a consistent performer offensively. What's behind Haniger's struggles, and will he break out of it?Blake Sabol has been a success story for the Giants so far this season. Taken by the Reds in the Rule 5 draft, the SF Giants immediately traded for Sabol, who's played catcher, outfield, and DH for the Giants this year. But really, Sabol's greatest strength so far has been hit bat—particularly against right-handed pitching. Will he stick on the roster all season if he doesn't really have a defensive home? And what's his future with the San Francisco Giants beyond 2023 if they're able to keep him all year and shed his Rule 5 status? What's behind SF Giants prospect Luis Matos' major turnaround from last year to this year? In 2021, Matos was so impressive as a 19-year-old in Low-A that he was widely considered a Top 50 prospect. His 2022 season in High-A, however, was massively disappointing that he fell off virtually all top prospect lists. This year, the biggest improvement has been plate discipline. He nearly doubled his walk rate from 2022 in Double-A, and earned a promotion to Triple-A, where he continues to tear it up. Matos has put himself on the doorstep of the major leagues where he's a phone call away from a spot in the Giants' outfield.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Suddenly, the San Francisco Giants have become an exciting team. Many described last year's SF Giants—and even the 107-win 2021 Giants—as "boring." These 2023 Giants are not boring, and that's largely due to the emergence of young talent like Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey, who were a big part of the Giants' second offensive eruption in their last four games. Five Giants hitters had three hits as the SF Giants won 14-4.Austin Slater was activated from the IL, and there was some Twitter drama about it. A local radio personality said that he looked forward to not seeing Slater on the team anymore, and tons of people pounced. Indeed, Slater has been one of the very best hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching over an extended period of time, and even Clayton Kershaw—just the other day—named Slater among the five toughest hitters he's faced. He had three hits including a home run in yesterday's return. The Giants have a roster crunch. A serious roster crunch. Reliever Luke Jackson is about to be activated, and that will require not only a 26-man corresponding move but also a corresponding 40-man move (likely someone being DFA'd). One day after a dramatic comeback win, the San Francisco Giants played extremely ugly baseball in a loss to the Twins in the series finale. It all began in the first inning, when the SF Giants had things set up beautifully against Joe Ryan, who's been one of the game's best pitchers this season. The Giants had runners on second and third with nobody out, but they were unable to score. That type of situation came up again and again, and the SF Giants were consistently unable to capitalize. The Giants also had major defensive issues in the loss. Michael Conforto let a ball sail over his head. Blake Sabol had a costly passed ball. Brandon Crawford clanked two easily catchable balls, one a throw from Sabol and one a routine grounder that should've ended an inning. Brett Wisely also let a routine ground ball go right through him. What is the level of concern with Crawford? He's not hitting at all (although he did have a good offensive game today), but he also looks very much not like himself on defense. And what can the SF Giants do with Craw if they determine he's simply no longer their best option at short? And what is the level of concern with Mitch Haniger, who remains in a very deep slump at the plate? The San Francisco Giants are making moves! A little more than a week ago, Casey Schmitt was promoted to the majors, and his performance to date has been nothing short of exciting. Today, the SF Giants announced that they've promoted their 2020 first-round selection Patrick Bailey, a catcher, and right-handed reliever Ryan Walker to the major league team.Joey Bart went on the IL with a groin injury, and Ross Stripling went on the IL with a low back strain. Cal Stevenson was DFA'd and Heliot Ramos was placed on the 60-day IL with an oblique injury. Bailey has a chance to stick on the MLB roster. Bart simply hasn't hit enough since making his debut in 2020 to feel too comfortable about his position on the roster. While he's made strides both at the plate and behind it, his free-swinging ways are not valued by this front office, while Bailey is far more of a patient hitter who fits the mold of what Farhan Zaidi and company like.Blake Sabol has also done quite well as a hitter (and he has that patience/power approach that the SF Giants like), so it's entirely possible that if Bailey performs well offensively while Bart is on the IL, that Bart is optioned to Sacramento. This is assuming that Bailey performs well defensively, and Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area has reported on multiple occasions that several Giants officials believed Bailey was their best defensive catcher in MLB camp this year.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Joey Bart went on the IL with a groin injury, and Ross Stripling went on the IL with a low back strain. While he's made strides both at the plate and behind it, his free-swinging ways are not valued by this front office, while Bailey is far more of a patient hitter who fits the mold of what Farhan Zaidi and company like. Blake Sabol has also done quite well as a hitter (and he has that patience/power approach that the SF Giants like), so it's entirely possible that if Bailey performs well offensively while Bart is on the IL, that Bart is optioned to Sacramento. This is assuming that Bailey performs well defensively, and Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area has reported on multiple occasions that several Giants officials believed Bailey was their best defensive catcher in MLB camp this year.
