Britt and Jackie are excited to celebrate National Yoga Awareness Month in September on the Black Health 365 podcast. They are joined by Brandon Copeland, the creator of Trap Yoga, to inspire healthy living and mindfulness. This episode is both intriguing and informative, as it discusses the benefits of yoga and its effective treatment for black men and individuals in general. Although yoga can mean different things to different people, scientific research has proven that it offers many health benefits through physical practice. By sharing this episode, Britt and Jackie hope to highlight not only the physical but also the mental health benefits of yoga for our community. Brandon began practicing yoga as a way to relieve mental stress and focus on being more mindful. The journey he has been on, exploring the body's capabilities and opportunities, has brought joy, love, and insight to his personal life and to the lives of others. Brandon became interested in yoga at Howard University where he went on to get a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor focus on Philosophy. Brandon created Trap Yoga in 2015. His style of teaching encourages you to be creative on your mat and create your own practice one pose at a time. He finds ways to challenge the most advanced, as well as the new and unsure, students. His mission is to enlighten people to their own potential and to help cultivate their internal sources of power, creativity, and love.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Feel like yoga is out of your reach? Quite literally. Are you Intimidated by deep stretching and breathing? Worried that you're the only one that looks like you in a room full of zened-out yogis. We often think of yoga as something that “other people” do, not as something that we do. Celebrity Wellness Expert, Founder and Owner of Khephera Wellness and Creator of "Trap Yoga" Brandon Copeland joins Hello Helanah of Wellness At Work to talk about his very own “imposter syndrome” journey to yoga. Helanah and Brandon talk deeply about carving your own path to wellness, how long black yogis have been in the building and what it takes to grow exponentially in your practice. Favoritism and beef? That’s the theme in the latest Drinking Partners podcast as Ed finds himself embroiled in both. Martinea Goss, founder and instructor for Trap Yoga, stops by the studio to bring her unique vibe and to explain how she mixes music and yoga to create a dynamic, positive flow. Having created Trap Yoga to fill a void in the Pittsburgh yoga scene, Ms. Goss focuses on establishing a different scene and welcoming a new crowd and speaks on how she designs her classes. After a conversation about the Trap Yoga business model, the trio takes a sharp turn to discuss raccoons, which will not surprise anyone. The interview concludes with Ms. Goss’s plans for the future and, of course, her favorite form of potato. Stay for the laughs as Larry and Casey attempt to do Trap Yoga.
When you look at problems like systematic oppression, the 20-year life expectancy gap between people of color and Caucasian communities, a lack of physical activity programming for kids, or even stigma about accessing mental health services … well, it’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed. The high achievers on this week’s episode of #WeGotGoals, however, chose to face these issues head-on rather than shrinking from them. Each one has created a unique way to improve their communities—all using fitness as a catalyst. As part of the #SweatworkingWeek last month, CLIF presented a Lunch and Learn called Fitness Is for Everyone: Perspectives in Equity. Immediately afterward, the four panelists took a few steps around the corner into the podcast studio and continued the conversation. Here at aSweatLife, we’re always looking for ways to expand access to the benefits of an active lifestyle, so no one encounters a barrier to living their best lives. So, we were happy to learn more about each of these panelists’ innovative and impressive efforts. Our guests are: Alison Rootberg, Founder of Wellness4Every1, described how her organization offers corporate wellness programs that support wellness programs in schools. Each employee is matched to a specific student, creating a personal connection that expands beyond the financial. Tanya Lozano, Founder of Healthy Hood. Based in Pilsen, Healthy Hood offers $5 fitness and dance classes that appeal to people in the surrounding community—think Trap Yoga and Latin Dance—taught by instructors of color, and also provides food and nutrition education through a community garden. Ashley Rockwood, Founder of Free MVMT Shop, shared the story of her pop-up studio just a couple of weeks ago on #WeGotGoals. This week, she expanded on her ambitions, including the idea of incorporating dance-based movement therapy. Caullen Hudson, also a repeat guest and Founder of SoapBox Productions, a film and social activism non-profit. Among many other efforts—including a successful campaign to bar a problematic judge from being re-elected—the organization has put on several Fitness Against Fascism events. We know you won’t be able to listen to this conversation without wanting to do your part. Fortunately, each panelist offers some solid ideas at the end for how to move the needle and open opportunities for fitness to more people in the city—and beyond (and even to address inequities outside the fitness world). Whether it’s giving time or money to these organizations, having difficult conversations with your family members, or donating used fitness gear or yoga mats, there’s bound to a way you can contribute. One huge way to make your voice heard, of course, is to vote—if you’re in Chicago, municipal elections are Feb. 26. Like what you hear? You can subscribe to the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast, or any other podcasting app. Adding a rating or a review, if you’re so inclined, helps other people find the show too. And you can also join us, live and in person, at The Moxy this Thursday, February 7; we’ll be talking with Jillian Lorenz, co-founder of The Barre Code. Recording starts at 6 pm, and this event is totally free! More details here.
Tierra B is one of those people that magnetizes any room she walks into. I met Tierra at the Prison Yoga Project training in Nashville a couple months ago, and have loved following her online since then. With a bachelors in Crime, Law, and Justice, and a masters in Forensics, Tierra started her career in federal law enforcement. Eventually, patriarchal bullshit (my words, not hers) was a big part of what made the work environment so toxic for her that she knew it was time to take a gamble and go all-in with yoga. In this episode, Tierra and I talk about: her transition from law enforcement to full-time yoga the injustice of how our modern criminal justice system dehumanizes people who are incarcerated how she felt super uncomfortable in her first experiences of yoga, but now views discomfort as something we should lean into rather than avoid the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship and her must-do daily self-care routines spiritual connection with nature how we get sucked into the consumer culture and the ongoing practice of prioritizing core values and goals over short-term "wants" our shared struggle with the snooze button Thanks for listening, and if you dig, please share it with a friend and review the podcast on iTunes because it helps more people find it! xx About Tierra B Tierra B, (AKA YogiTB) hails from Prince Georges County, Maryland. She is a yoga student, freelance yoga instructor, mindfulness advocate, health & wellness advocate for people of color. Tierra decided to pursue yoga her freshman year of college as her gym credit and found it as an outlet, mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. Ever since, she has advocated for the education and experience of living a more holistic, healthier lifestyle. Moving every day to motivate her students to practice self-care and build mindfulness practices. She is half of NamaSIP and creator of Flow2Glow, LLC. Tierra has practiced yoga for ten years and has been a 200hr. RYT since 2017. Tierra is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University (BS) & Stevenson University (MS). She completed Yoga4Trauma Training, February 2018 and completed the Prison Yoga Project training, May 2018 in Nashville, TN. YogiTB works with all types of communities from schools to professional athletes. She teaches vinyasa, yin, restorative, trauma based and Trap Yoga. She promotes loving kindness practices & intentional actions/ways of living. Constantly motivating her students to vibrate high. Her aesthetic is positive energy & vibes just flowing.
