Send us a Text Message. What does it mean to be a man? Is asking for help a sign of weakness? Is asking for help with mental health or other health concerns a sign of weakness? In this episode of the Impostrix Podcast, we have the privilege of hosting Brock Williams, a dedicated mental health advocate, poet, and author, who takes shares his journey coming to terms with mental health challenges in his personal and professional life. Brock opens up about the piercing clarity brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the pressing necessity for self-care, especially among Black men. He doesn't shy away from discussing how stepping back from the relentless grind to prioritize health can be a radical, yet essential, act of self-preservation.We tackle the deeply ingrained societal norms that often compel Black men to suppress their emotions from a young age. Brock and I break down the destructive cultural stigmas that paint seeking mental health help as a sign of weakness. By sharing heartfelt anecdotes and practical insights, we shine a spotlight on the important roles played by families and communities in fostering safe spaces for emotional expression. Our conversation ventures into the professional realm, where Brock narrates his journey of balancing work and personal health, especially after contracting COVID-19 twice. He speaks candidly about the fears and challenges of navigating mental health in the workplace, stressing the importance of knowing one's rights and seeking necessary accommodations. Erica Hawthorne identifies as a "People-Focused Marketer," has won several industry awards in digital media strategy as a badass "Black Wellness Marketer." I recently heard her speak at a Pharma conference, and she blew the doors of the place, stunning the audience with her no-BS perspective and forthright honesty. She basically tore a hole in space/time, and I had to get her on the program. She joins me in-studio to share her remarkable story, her take on how to "fix" the parts we can, why Pharma Marketing is horrible, and what the "Ultimate Rubix cube" of patient-centricity could be. Even better, Erica is an archetype GenXer, so we throw down the gauntlet on nostalgia, the nineties (which sucked), the eighties (which were awesome), and all the shenanigans you would expect from this show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

There's something about grief that has a way of building connections. There is a community in grief as the process, while unique to each individual and situation is a universal concept. During Karega and Felicia's deepest period of grief they found the music of Rexx Life Raj . His lyrics connected to their experiences in a way that they couldn't necessarily find words for at the time. Nor did they think that others shared certain aspects of their grief experiences until they heard Rexx mention it. Today, Karega and Felicia sit down with Rexx Life Raj to discuss his music, grief, community, and all that comes with it.CLICK HERE if you would like to ask Karega & Felicia a question.========Felicia's new book SOL Affirmations: A Toolkit for Mothers Who Are Investigating Grief's Process is available now! When it comes to health and wellness, how important is it that you feel represented? In this episode, I am reading an article written by Amira Rasool of Glamour (https://www.glamour.com/story/the-importance-of-black-wellness-influencers-cannot-be-overstated). It resonates so deeply as a black woman who feels our self-care, love, and focus needs to be a connection, a safe space on all levels. Our experience is recognizing that we need our help and that's the solution, helping one another focus on ourselves, our wellness, on purpose unapologetically. Your thoughts and feedback is welcome and we get to dive into well-being our way, the only way. Peace & Love Vibes --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dopeeveryday/support

Holy and healthy might be found under the same roof. In episode 20, Ritney Castine and Aidil Ortiz talk about how the religious institution may be trying to save us in more ways than one. Historically, Black people have gone to faith-based institutions as a safe space to discuss matters beyond religion. Castine explains how the Christian church has been a place to promote generational health and wellness. Churches are often used as hubs for public health outreach and as facilities to provide health care. The pandemic highlighted this even more -- churches hosting drive-through COVID-19 vaccinations and demonstrating how to properly social distance during times of worship. Like The Center for Black Health & Equity, some organizations understand the role that faith-based institutions play in Black lives. The Center hosts No Menthol Sunday every year -- an initiative that presents faith leaders with the opportunity to talk about tobacco cessation and how the tobacco industry markets menthol to African Americans. While we can commend the role faith-based institutions have played in promoting public health, the hosts agree there are times where they missed the mark. For example, some faith-based institutions have pushed back on the discussion of HIV/AIDS. In this episode, learn how both public health and religion can work together to promote overall wellness.

In this episode I speak with Holistic Psychotherapist, Dr. Kellie Kirksey, about her early life experience of having a skin condition that made her feel ‘other' than her peers. We get the opportunity to hear about how that sense of being outside of the norm motivated Dr. Kellie to become a contemplative person and to take interest in spiritual life and holistic healing. We learn about the important role that Dr. Kellie's mother played in caring for and nurturing her sense of well-being as well as the community leadership positions that her grandmother and great-grandmother took in caring for the Black community during the Jim Crow Era. We discuss the ancestral trauma of slavery and how Dr. Kellie has come to unpack and understand her own lived experience as a Black woman in America. She invites us into deeper connection with our body, music, art and movement to experience the healing and transformative power of creativity and also shares with us a powerful poem at the end with the call to STAY AWAKE.www.drkelliek.com

All woman deserve safer beauty options but are there safer options for everyone? Today I'm joined by Certified Holistic Health Coach and fellow blogger & podcaster, Tiffany Stuart, to discuss this topic and share her experience switching over to safer products. Multiple research studies show that products marketed to women of color, and especially to black women, tend to contain a much higher amount of ingredients that could be harmful to health and put them at risk. How can we ensure they have better options? Are there safer products being made for and marketed to women of color or are there still gaps to fill? You can find Tiffany at https://www.itsmeladyg.com/, @itsmeladyg on Instagram, It's Me, Lady G YouTube channel, and on her podcast, What In The Wellness With Tiffany.

For many African-American parents, part of the responsibility of raising a child includes preparing them for the racism and violence they may experience because of the color of their skin. To discuss what it is like to raise a black child in the Valley, FM89's Kathleen Schock spoke with Isaac Sandifer Jr., a retired educator and brigadier general from Bakersfield, Dr. Edythe Stewart, a general surgeon who practices in Merced, Shantay Davies-Balch, CEO of the Black Wellness and Prosperity Center in Fresno, and Dympna Ugwu-Oju, editor of Fresnoland.
An inflammatory phrase using the n-word was one of many disruptions to a Fresno City Council meeting on June 11, held online via the videoconferencing platform Zoom. The man said “kill all n-words,” twice, before his audio was muted by city councilmembers. Another attendee used an explicit phrase including the n-word as a username, and another attendee “Zoom-bombed” the meeting with pornographic videos. The disruptions followed a presentation by advocates for African-American health and members of a local chapter of the NAACP. "Welcome to the black experience," texted Shantay Davies-Balch, CEO of the Black Wellness and Prosperity Center and one of the presenters, after the meeting. Speaking with FM89, City Council President Miguel Arias said the commenter acted like a “dumbass,” and said he doesn’t represent the community as a whole. “It’s not a reflection of our city, who has demonstrated to our nation that we can peacefully protest and have civil dialogues and differences of opinion,
