A 7th generation descendant of the first African migrants to ever accompany Nova Scotia, a proud African Nova Scotian Queer Visual artist who focuses on the importance of representation of Black and Brown people; Inclusivity and self-embracement. Known for Unapologetically Black and Unapologetically Queer Apparel, photography, graphic and clothing design, film making and painting. Clayton states “Exploring the photograph archives at the Black Loyalist Centre during my art residency May 2022, I was very intrigued by the collection and the style of photography amongst the old photos. I came to the centre with an open mind towards creation and with very few ideas. The twelve portraits displayed in this piece were of the many that spoke and/or stood out to me each day I canvased the albums. Curious about their stories that I may not ever know, their presence and existence should not be forgotten and this is a way to keep them in memoriam.”
Unapologetically Black || Issa Kickback Epi. #63In our latest episode of "It's Kickback," we wanted to clear the air about a topic that often comes loaded with misconceptions—Pro Blackness. Here's the takeaway: Pro Blackness does not equate to anti-white sentiment. We love everyone and encourage open dialogue and learning. With that said, Black history is American history. It is storied with heroes, systemic oppressions, and victories. We urge everyone to engage in further research, opening up dialogues and understanding more about our shared past. Let's not stay ignorant. Embrace the technological advantage to learn, grow, and foster an inclusive community.*Available on all Streaming Platforms || Be A Guest Linkhttps://linktr.ee/issakickbackpodFollow Us! On this 300th episode of Power Station, I am joined by my friend and colleague John Holdsclaw. Over the twenty plus years I have known John he has excelled as an organizer, public policy advocate, and leader in financial services that deepen racial and economic equity in under-resourced Black, Latino, Indigenous and AAPI communities. John launched Rochdale Capital, an emerging CDFI, with its strategic partner, National Cooperative Bank, to provide capital to enterprises, from affordable housing to health centers and grocery stores, structured as cooperatives and other forms of shared ownership. He views CDFIs not as an industry but as a movement that uplifts communities traditional banks have failed to serve. Take Rochdale's investment in a line of credit for All-In Groceries, a store that was 58 years in the making in Waterloo, Iowa's East Side, a neighborhood marginalized by decades of redlining and racism. This is the community and life-changing work that motivates Rochdale Capital's fully engaged staff and board of directors. And John announces our thrilling partnership, Power Station powered by Rochdale Capital. Expect more stories from leaders who invest financial and human capital to build community, influence and power.

A new monument is designed to showcase the rich cultural history and beauty of the predominantly Black community in Crenshaw. A stop for the metro line is being added and usually the comes with gentrification and eradication of culture. So maybe the most critical goal of the project might be this: to show Los Angelenos and visitors to the city that the Crenshaw community—most famously portrayed on film in Akeelah and the Bee and Boyz n the Hood—isn't a neighborhood to be passed through. It's a destination worth traveling to. It's a community that is worthy of art, beauty, economic investment, and most importantly—honor and respect. An archive episode we recored earlier this year in February to celebrate Black History Month. We had a well rounded in-depth conversation on what it means to be unapologetically black. We explore the varying definitions people have when they hear the term (To Be Unapologetically Black) and we discussed how can you take pride in your blackness while still uplifting others. We also honored pivotal black figures in history and discussed what we can we do NOW to ensure that their contributions to history keep moving forward.
Fun fact.. I grew up without the realization that being Black was considered a "bad thing" by some people. I had no grid for it for years. See, my Black experience began in the majority Black nation of Haiti. We were all Black so nothing was "wrong" with that :) Fast forward to sitting in my history class in middle school in the United States and finding out a slew of facts indicating that indeed there were people out there who thought less of Black people and the Black race. I was angry, devastated, and almost in disbelief. I didn't want to believe that racism and racist acts were a part of reality. I wanted to believe in the purity of our human race. But the reality is racism does exist. This vile and unproductive belief system has tried to steal the beauty and joy of being simply Black. One of the greatest tools in fighting hate is love. We fight racism against Black people and Black skin by us loving our Blackness. In this episode, we take the conversation to a deeper level. I sit with Chanel Diane, Founder of CDianeWhisk Food Blog, she is another woman of color and a friend. We explore the beauty of not only being authentic with our Blackness, but also being unapologetically Black. More than three decades ago, Janet Jackson dropped an album that changed us all without changing anything about itself. As we approach Control's 35th anniversary, The Music Snobs wonder if this seminal work of art is the first unapologetically Black crossover that didn't change a damn thing to appeal to the mainstream.
