Ottawa based singer-songwriter Lynn Miles has written more than 900 songs in her career so far – a staggering amount, but one that reflects the level of commitment a consummate artist makes to her calling. One of Canada's finest songwriters, Lynn has picked up numerous awards including a Juno, and multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, and her albums consistently feature prominently in Best of the Year lists and readers polls. Lynn joins us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about her latest album – album number sixteen, “TumbleWeedyWorld”, an excellent new recording with a warm acoustic folk feel that at times almost dips into bluegrass. The album features ten songs that reflect on the uncertainty and fragility of life, and the obstacles (the tumbleweeds) that can destabilize and destroy our intimate relationships. It's a fabulous conversation with a special emphasis on the art of songwriting, and the challenges of making a living as a musician in post pandemic times. As well being as a fine songwriter, Lynn Miles is also a vocal coach, producer and public speaker – in fact, Lynn spoke movingly on the issue of Musicians and Mental Health at Folk Alliance in 2019. For more information about the music of Lynn Miles, visit https://lynnmiles.ca. Photo: Balfour Photo. Music: Jay Aymar “Overtime” (Theme) from “Overtime” (2013, Self), Lynn Miles “Night Owl”, “Highway 105”, “Johnny Without June” and “Gold In The Middle” from “Tumbleweedyworld” (2023, True North Records). If you like the artists you hear on Folk Roots Radio and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music, and then you'll really make a difference to their income at a time when it is becoming much more difficult to make a living as a musician. Folk Roots Radio is a labour of love - a full time hobby. Last year, Canadian folk artist Bruce Cockburn belated launched a tour celebrating 50 years in music. When we ran an excerpt from this interview last Christmas season, we started off talking about the tour. Since he's not on tour now, I cut some of that material but did start with a conversation on how someone with 50-plus years in the business relates to the music he wrote decades ago. We focused our attention on Christmas, his 1993 album of Christmas music. We talk about its humble origins and the versions that inspired some of his takes. To let you in on the conversation, I also included Sam Phillips' version of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon's "Christ was Born on Christmas Morn," which Cockburn recorded as "Early on One Christmas Morn." He also talks about why he chose to sing the Huron Christmas carol "Jesus Ahtonnia" in its native language. It's a good conversation that fits the album into conversations about faith and life, and what can happen over the course of more than 50 years. On November 25, he will have three new releases—the digital album Rarities, which features songs previously on the Rumors of Glory box set along with tracks recorded for tribute albums to Gordon Lightfoot, Pete Seeger, Mississippi Sheiks and Mississippi John Hurt. He will also release vinyl versions of 1997's The Charity of the Night and 1999's Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu. You pre-order all of them now from his label, True North Records.

On the podcast this week, Mike's hears the stories and lessons of Geoff Kulawick's life in the music industry. He's the founder and president of Linus Entertainment, which now has exclusive control of a catalogue of over 2,000 albums, with the overwhelming majority by Canadian artists. Linus is also the parent company to Spring Hill Music, Stony Plain Records, and True North Records, which makes it one of the powerful players in roots music in Canada, representing artists like Buffy Sainte-Marie, Matt Andersen, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Fred Penner, Craig Cardiff, and so many more. Here, Geoff recounts his entry into the music business, why he opted to launch his own label just as Napster was decimating the industry, his philosophy on doing business and working with artists, and a whole lot more. Then, for the second interview today, Mike happens to chat with someone from the Stony Plain Records roster. That is, Mike McDonald of alt-country pioneers Jr. Gone Wild. He and his old friends are back with the first album of new material from Jr. Gone Wild in 25 years. McDonald chats about how the industry has changed, how the band naturally found its then-unique sound that combines folk, punk, and country; growing up as friends and artists; and more.

Bernie Finkelstein is my guest on the show this week. It's a natural companion piece to last weeks' interview with Bruce Cockburn. If you haven't heard that one (Episode 19), please check it out as well! Bernie has been in the biz for decades, originally starting out as a helper and manager for folk artists and rock bands around Toronto's buzzing scene in the mid/late 60's. His early success in the US with The Paupers and working with the legendary Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan's manager) led him back to Toronto to start his own label, True North Records. He made his mark early signing Bruce Cockburn, a relationship that continues to this day. His other successes have included clients like Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, and he even signed a little weirdo instrumental band from Vancouver called Zubot and Dawson. Bernie has great stories from all of those eras and tells them in his recent book "True North", but it's more fun to hear him tell them in person, so Bernie was nice enough to spend some time with me for the show. Enjoy my conversation with Bernie Finkelstein!
My guest on the show this week is legendary performer and songwriter Bruce Cockburn. Bruce has been recording and touring for over 40 years, and has over 30 spectacular albums to his credit. One of the most beloved of Canadian artists, Bruce has made a huge mark in the US and Europe as well. With humble beginnings in the folk scene of Toronto in the 60's, to releasing his first few classic albums on True North Records, before achieving massive commercial success in the late 70's and 80's with hit songs like "Wondering Where The Lions Are", "Lovers In A Dangerous Time" and "If I Had a Rocket Launcher". I've always been drawn to Bruce's creative guitar playing, which incorporates blues, jazz, folk and ragtime elements into a unique sound that instantly recognizable. Bruce and I had a chance to discuss his life and career in music and all the stages of his amazing career. Enjoy my conversation with Bruce Cockburn!
Bernie Finkelstein sat down with Canadian Musician Editor Andrew King during Music PEI's 2016 edition of the May Run Music Festival and Canadian Song Conference for the keynote address. Bernie was as candid and charismatic as always, talking about his history in the business, True North Records, his ongoing professional and personal relationship with longtime client Bruce Cockburn, and more, and we're sharing that interview with you! Plus, current tour mates Attica Riots and Bleeker spoke with Mike about their present happenings. Bleeker (formerly Bleeker Ridge) dropped a self-titled EP through Five Seven Music in the early spring while Attica Riots will drop their debut LP on the same label later this year. Both bands are finding their audiences thanks to hooky debut singles and both are likely to be staples at rock radio in the not-so-distant future.
