It's a holiday gift-wrapped conversation with American soccer pioneer and US National Soccer Hall of Famer Johnny Moore - whose professional career as a player and coach across the original versions of both the North American Soccer League (San Jose Earthquakes, Oakland Stompers), and Major Indoor Soccer League (Detroit Lightning, San Francisco Fog, Phoenix Inferno & a one-game/one-goal stint with the Kansas City Comets), and as General Manager of the original Major League Soccer incarnation of the 'Quakes (formerly Clash, now Houston Dynamo) - is the stuff of legend. Also: the "outlaw" 1969 Oakland/California Clippers; San Francisco's infamous Cow Palace; the mid-70s US Men's National Team; the real origin story of the NASL 35-yard line (and Shootout); and how Mexico's Club America almost became another Chivas USA. + + +  SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "Soccer Fever: A Year With the San Jose Earthquakes" (1977): https://amzn.to/3BTrNy1   FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

As someone from the disability community, I'm often let down by how our community is portrayed in comics and it is rare to see our struggle reflected accurately. A month or two ago on social media that shall not be named, I saw screenwriter Peter Warren talking about his new comics project The Tin Can Society dropping right now from Image Comics on Rick Remender's Giant Generator Imprint, where he's using a sensitivity reader to help with the portrayal of the main protagonist tech mogul and superhero Johnny Moore. It has become common for writers to enlist a little help to make sure they are sensitive to the challenges of different marginalized groups, something I'm wholeheartedly in favor of, so I reached out to Peter and sensitivity reader Gianna Marie to hear more about this unique type of collaboration and what exactly it entails. I was quite impressed with the Tin Can Society when I picked it up. Issues one and two are out on shelves now so make sure to snag yourself a copy. From the publisher The first stunning issue of a brand-new miniseries from Giant Generator showcasing the first comics work by screenwriter and incredible talent PETER WARREN (The Incal feature film, Kill Me) with jaw-dropping art by FRANCESCO MOBILI (X-Men, SCUMBAG) and beautifully colored by CHRIS CHUCKRY (New X-Men, Gen 13). Johnny Moore is a world-famous tech mogul known as much for his work pioneering mobility aids for people with disabilities (like himself) as he is for moonlighting as the metal-suited vigilante, CALIBURN. But when Johnny is found murdered and his suit stolen, his estranged childhood best friends reunite to solve the mystery of his murder. THE TIN CAN SOCIETY is a heartfelt and human look at the evolution of friendships across a lifetime, at disability and ableism, and the destructive power of fame. When the San José Earthquakes first started playing soccer in 1974, no one imagined how their efforts would reverberate 50 years later. The Quakes and their fans have overcome a multitude of issues in the last five decades, including leagues collapsing, attempted rebrandings, local apathy, political indifference and even a franchise relocation, yet they never gave up. Before rock 'n' roll was a thing, it was rhythm and blues that was perking up the ears of a generation of young radio listeners, and tops among the early R&B songwriters was Ivory Joe Hunter, the original “Baron of the Boogie.” Ivory Joe — by the way, that wasn't a nickname or a stage handle, but his given name (he always said that when he was born his parents thought he "looked just like the baby on the outside of the Castoria Ivory bottle, so they called me ‘Ivory'”— was born in Kirbyville, Texas, to a gospel-singing mother and a guitar-strumming daddy named Dave.At 13, his piano-playing already was turning heads, and his first recording was for traveling folklorist Alan Lomax and the Library of Congress when Ivory Joe was still a teenager in 1933. Hunter left Texas for the wilds of downtown Los Angeles in 1942, just as R&B was starting to attract legions of fans hungry for more tunes. He joined Johnny Moore's Three Blazers, with whom he wrote his first song, "Blues at Sunrise.” The group recorded it on his own label, Ivory Records, and it became a nationwide hit on the R&B chart in 1945.The Song On Oct. 1, 1949, Ivory Joe recorded a 12-bar blues that got into everybody's head when it was released by MGM the following year as “I Almost Lost My Mind.” Topping the 1950 R&B charts, it had sold a million copies by 1956. Later (in the wake of Hunter's 1956 success with his "Since I Met You Baby"), it was recorded by Pat Boone, whose version became a No. 1 pop hit.Legacy Hunter's compositional output ranged from R&B to blues, boogie-woogie to country music, and he made a name in all of those genres. By 1954, he already had recorded more than 100 songs when he made a major move to Atlantic Records. While visiting Memphis in the spring of 1957, Hunter spent a day at Graceland singing tunes with Elvis Presley, who was to record a number of Hunter songs, including "I Need You So", "My Wish Came True" and "Ain't That Lovin' You, Baby.”Some estimate Hunter wrote more than 7,000 songs in the 60 years of his lifetime. Uniquely, he was honored at both the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Grand Ole Opry. Our Take on the TuneSome songs in our repertoire we do only when Floodster Emerita Michelle Hoge, the beloved “Chick Singer,” is in the room. Our take on this good old Ivory classic is at the top of that list. This track is from last December, when Michelle had driven in from her Cincinnati area home to rehearse with us in preparation for the big “Flood at 50” gala at Alchemy Theatre last New Year's Eve. Football expert Johnny Moore unwraps another weekend of drama in the English Premier League Flow's football expert Johnny Moore phoned in from London to unwrap another weekend of drama in the English Premier League on the Flow Sports Hour this week. The biggest talking point from last weekend was Manchester United breaking their agonising trophy drought after taking care of this season's UK dark horse Newcastle United in the EFL Cup at Wembley Stadium. Moore also touched on the issues plaguing London giants Chelsea - with goal scoring a troublesome theme for the Stamford Bridge club in 2022/23. Elsewhere around the traps, Moore painted a bleak picture for the blue side of Merseyside, with Everton continuing to falter; this time at home against Aston Villa, while on the other end of the table, high-flyers Arsenal continued to set the benchmark domestically with a slim win over Leicester City. Manchester City did their bit to stay on the Gunners' heels, while Liverpool fired a blank away at Crystal Palace, with Moore admitting he 'regretted' taking the time out to watch the match.

Coronavirus wasn't the leading story today, religion was with Catholic Cardinal George Pell released from prison with our High Court quashing his child sex conviction. Sports has become a battle of the codes to survive the pandemic shutdown.  To discuss all this on the Uncuckables panel is Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled, Reg Penney from NSW Patriots Against the Extreme Left and Melbourne YouTuber and patriot Johnny Moore. It is Johnny's first appearance on the Uncuckables so the show begins with him introducing himself to the audience. Reg and Johnny are both Catholics so share their thoughts on George Pell having his child sex conviction quashed 7-0 by the full bench of the High Court. Tim as an atheist reflects on how the legal institutions of Victoria allowed such as miscarriage of justice to happen? There has also been the media witchhunt against Pell by the ABC and social media throughout this legal tragedy. All Australian sports codes have been suspended during the coronavirus pandemic. Tim and Johnny being AFL fans take solace our code will survive. Reg is an NRL fan and its CEO Todd Greenberg has said some clubs may not survive. But Rugby Australia is doing the worst under its CEO Raelene Castle who sacked Israel Folau with the code facing a $120 million revenue shortfall. The fight against the coronavirus is still the biggest global story. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in intensive care a week after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. Anger with China is growing for creating the virus with now US politicians joining those in Australia calling for China to be forced to pay reparations and compensation to the rest of the world. Australia is flattening the curve with daily infections continuing to decrease. This now has many wondering how long must we be subjected to these draconian lockdown measures with local police randomly pulling people over outside their home demanding to know their business, and fining them if they deem them to be engaging in non-essential travel. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Leonard, Coleman & Blunt. Leonard, Coleman and Blunt have been around the world and back again several times each as the lead singers of three of the most legendary vocal groups of all time: the Temptations, Platters and Drifters. The three Washington, DC natives have a back-story right out of a Hollywood movie; Leonard, Coleman & Blunt grew up singing together in church and on street corners throughout the 1960s before finding fame and fortune separately, then reuniting after 30 years to harmonize together once again. Glenn Leonard and his sweet tenor voice joined Motown's legendary Temptations, recording ten hit albums, touring the world, and singing lead on many of their 1970s and 1980's R&B hits. Joe Coleman joined the Platters for a two-decade stint as the group's lead singer in addition to gaining a successful career as a songwriter and playwright. Joe Blunt performed and recorded with the Drifters for over a decade in venues all over the world alongside Ben E. King and Johnny Moore, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sony Records. Concert attendees are treated to incredible showmanship, classic dance moves, and some of the biggest hits of all time, including “My Girl," “The Way You Do The Things You Do," “Get Ready,” “The Great Pretender,” “Only You,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “On Broadway,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” and many, many more.
