"Sounds of '91: Jerry Garcia Band Live and Marijuana News Unveiled"Larry Mishkin  focuses on Jerry Garcia music and breaking stories related to marijuana. He introduces a Jerry Garcia Band performance from November 15, 1991, at Madison Square Garden and delves into the details of the songs performed, particularly highlighting "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate." Amidst the music commentary, Larry also addresses significant marijuana-related news, emphasizing recent studies suggesting a potential connection between marijuana use and heart issues. He, however, points out limitations in the studies and emphasizes the need for a more comprehensive examination of the subject..Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast   Jerry Garcia BandNovember 15, 1991MSGNY, NYJerry Garcia Band 1991-11-15 FOB Schoeps Brotman Metchick Anon Noel t-flac1648 : Joe Noel : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive  INTRO:               How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You                           Track No. 2                           0:00 – 1:30 How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" is a song recorded by American soul singer Marvin Gaye from his fifth studio album of the same name (1965). It was written in 1964 by the Motown songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The song title was inspired by one of the actor and comedian Jackie Gleason's signature phrases, "How Sweet It Is!"  Released on Nov. 4, 1964 with Forever on the B-side. Cash Box described it as "a medium-paced, rollicking chorus-backed ode about a fella who's on top of the world since he met up with Miss Right."[4]AllMusic critic Jason Ankeny described the song as a "radiant pop confection," noting that it was unusual for Gaye in being a "straightforward love song" that doesn't reflect Gaye's usual demons.[5] Ankeny commented on the soulfulness of the song, and particularly noted the piano riff. James Taylor released his version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" as the lead single from his album Gorilla (1975).[11]Taylor's 1975 single has been the most successful remake of the song to date, hitting number one on the Easy Listening chart and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Long a staple of the JGB's set lists, First played on September 18, 1975 a Sophie's in Palo AltoLast played on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield Theater in S.F.Total played 373 times, by far the JGB's most played tune (Midnight Moonlight is 2d at 344) Usually a show opener.   There are three Dead shows on Nov. 13 and six JGB shows.  Of those six, none are available on Archivd.org.  So I am dong a JGB show two days later on Nov. 15, 1991 from MSG.  The standard JGB lineup for that time: Jerry Garcia; guitar, vocals- John Kahn; bass- Melvin Seals; keyboards- David Kemper; drums- Jaclyn LaBranch; backing vocals- Gloria Jones; backing vocals Great musicians, great vocals, its 1991, but Jerry is rocking. A fun night with Blues Traveler as the opening act. This show was released as Garcia Live Vol. 16 SHOW #1:                        Simple Twist of Fate                                         Track No. 5                                         3:00 – 4:40               In 1975, Bob Dylan released his album Blood on the Tracks, which included the song “Simple Twist of Fate.” The song is a haunting ballad about a failed relationship, and many fans have speculated about who Dylan wrote it about. While Dylan has never confirmed the identity of the song's subject, many believe that he wrote it about his former girlfriend, Joan Baez. Bob Dylan's message is one of hope and change. He speaks of a world that is better than the one we currently live in and urges people to work together to make it a reality. He also advocates for peace and love, and has said that these are the only things that can truly change the world. Always a big fan of Dylan, Garcia played this song 217 times, the first on July 4, 1976 at the Great American Music Hall in S.F. and the last on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield in S.F.  If you are wondering why that April 23, 1995 dates keeps popping up, that was the last JGB show. SHOW #2:                        Lay Down Sally                                         Track No. 6                                         1:40 – 3:15 "Lay Down Sally" is a song performed by Eric Clapton, and written by Clapton, Marcy Levy, and George Terry. It appeared on his November 1977 album Slowhand, and reached No. 3 on the BillboardHot 100 chart.  It was released as a single with Cocaine on the B-side, quite the heavy hitting release.  It was the song of the summer of 1978 and always one of Slow Hand's favorite songs. "Lay Down Sally" is a country blues song performed in the style of J. J. Cale. Clapton explained, "It's as close as I can get, being English, but the band being a Tulsa band, they play like that naturally. You couldn't get them to do an English rock sound, no way. Their idea of a driving beat isn't being loud or anything. It's subtle."Billboard magazine described Clapton's vocal as "low key but earthy" and also praised Marcy Levy's backing vocals.[5]Cash Box praised Clapton's "guitar finesse."JGB covered the tune 54 timesFirst: November 20, 1990 Warfield, SFLast: March 4, 1995 Warfield, SF Gets a great crowd reaction and Jerry loves jamming on Clapton tunes. Link to picture of Garcia and Clapton from back in the day:  Jerry Garcia & Eric Clapton Pose | Grateful Dead Clapton interviewed on the Dead in 1968:Have you heard the Grateful Dead record?A:  “Yeah, it's great.” Peter Townshend said he saw the Dead at the Pop Festival, and called them “one of the original ropeys.” A:   “Ropey! That means a drag. I don't think the quality of their music is as high as a lot of other good recording bands. People are more concerned with live music, maybe, than with recording. I'm not sure of that. I'm guessing. If the Grateful Dead are one of the best, they're not doing a very good job on record.”What do you think of the guitar playing? Jerry Garcia's synthesis of blues, jazz and country and western, with a little jug band thrown in?A:   “It's very good, and very tight, but it's not really my bag.” SHOW #3:       Deal                        Track No. 9                        2:46 – 4:15 Finally, a Garcia tune!  And one of his best. One of the Grateful Dead's live staples, and many gambling songs is the Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia collaboration, “Deal”. First performed on February 19th, 1971, the song was in regular rotation until the end, both for the Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band.“Deal” saw studio release as the opening track to Jerry Garcia's 1972 debut solo album, Garcia, which also contained several other classic Grateful Dead live songs including “Sugaree”, “Bird Song”, “Loser”, and “The Wheel”. It's also worth noting that the classic folk song, “Don't Let Your Deal Go Down”, first recorded in 1925 by Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers contains many similarities to the Grateful Dead song. Hunter was known to pull references from a wide variety of sources in his songwriting, and it is highly likely he was familiar with the tune. JGB played it 291 times in concert.  First on March 4, 1978 at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CALast time on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield Grateful Dead played it 422 timesFirst on Feb. 19, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NYLast on June 18, 1995 at Giant's Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.Longest absence from the rotation was 29 shows from Oct. 2, 1988 at Shoreline in lovely Mountain View, CA and then not again until April 11, 1989 at the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, IL You had to be trying really hard, or just be really unlucky to never catch this tune during those days.  I still say it is the best Garcia tune, great music, great tempo, Jerry loved to jam on this tune and his voice really made the song.  Almost always a first set closer.  SHOW #4:               Ain't No Bread In The Breadbox                                Track No. 14                                1:22 – 3:02 Written by Phillip Jackson (September 28, 1951[1] – October 30, 2009),[2] best known as Norton Buffalo, was an American singer-songwriter, countryand blues harmonica player, record producer, bandleader and recording artist who was a versatile proponent of the harmonica, including chromatic[3] and diatonic. In early 1976 Buffalo joined the "farewell" European tour of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, and was recorded on the band's final live album We've Got a Live One Here!,[5] which included Buffalo's song "Eighteen Wheels." After the tour, Buffalo returned to California, briefly played with a number of local bands, and later in 1976 he joined the Steve Miller Band's Fly Like an Eagle Tour. He also played harmonica on the band's hit follow-up album Book of Dreams, released in May 1977. Buffalo appeared on the tracks "Winter Time" and "The Stake." By the late 1970s Buffalo had formed his own band, The Stampede, and recorded two Capitol Records albums: Lovin' in the Valley of the Moon and Desert Horizon. In 1977 his harmonica work appeared on Bonnie Raitt's Sweet Forgiveness and The Doobie Brothers' Livin' on the Fault Line albums. He was a member of the Mickey Hart band High Noon in the late 70s and early 80s with Merl Saunders, Mike Hinton, Jim McPhearson, Vicki Randle, and Bobby Vega, and played with Saunders on the Rainforest Band album It's in the Air in 1993. Ain't No Bread In The Breadbox was performed 65 times by the Jerry Garcia Band.First time on Nov. 6, 1991at the Cap Center in Landover, MD (just 9 days earlier but this was already the band's 7th performance of the tune.  Jerry really liked it. The song was played by Phil Lesh with Norton Buffalo, Boz Scaggs and others in 2004. The song was also played by Billy & The Kids in 2021.                        OUTRO:                  What A Wonderful World                                Track No. 19                                1:55 – 3:37 "What a Wonderful World" is a song written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single. In April 1968, it topped the pop chart in the United Kingdom,[2] but performed poorly in the United States because Larry Newton, the president of ABC Records, disliked the song and refused to promote it.After it was heard in the film Good Morning, Vietnam, it was reissued as a single in 1988, and rose to number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3] Armstrong's recording was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.In Graham Nash's book Off the Record: Songwriters on Songwriting, George Weiss says he wrote the song specifically for Louis Armstrong, as he was inspired by Armstrong's ability to bring together people of different races. JGB played the song 12 times in concertFirst was on Nov. 6. 1991 at the Cap Centre in Maryland (again, just 9 days before this show, this was the band's 4th performance of the tuneLast Oct. 31, 1992 at Oakland Alameda County Colisium.Just in the rotation for one year. But who can't love Jerry channeling his inner Louis Armstrong and harmonizing the Jackie and Gloria.  A great way to end a show and send everyone home with a smile and warm fuzzy feeling.A perfect night with Jerry.  Mishkin Law, LLC500 Skokie Blvd.Suite 325Northbrook, IL  60062Cell: (847) 812-1298Office Direct: (847) 504-1480lmishkin@mishkin.law

Hello and welcome to another Audio Excursion! Roger Nichols was educated in Nuclear Physics and worked as an operator at a Nuclear Plant in California with the acronym SONGS. Ironically after just a few years in that industry, he threw it all away to learn how to become a Recording Engineer. He became the recording engineer for Steely Dan by luck as they wanted to record some material for Gary Katz of ABC Records, but the only engineer around was Roger Nichols. And the rest, as they say, is history. A tight knit group of professional musicians joined the production team and the band. Roger also did engineering work for many others with John Denver being a regular client and friend of Roger. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2011 leaving behing his wife Connie and 2 daughters, Cimcie and Ashley. Cimcie has graciously agreed to have a wide ranging interview here on Vinyl Community Podcasts. John Madara was born on May 28, 1936 and grew up in Philadelphia, at a time when the city was teeming with groups and artists such as The Spaniels, The Clovers, Harvey and The Moonglows, Billy Ward and The Dominos and the great Jackie Wilson.  Rock and roll was starting to take root and John Madara was destined to make rock and roll history.   In 1957, John launched his solo career, with his first record, "Be My Girl," reaching the National charts.  That same year, John co-wrote with Dave White a song called "Do The Bop."  On the advice of Dick Clark, whose local show, American Bandstand, had just gone National, the title and lyrics were changed to "At The Hop."  Danny and The Juniors recorded it, and by Christmas of 1957 it had reached the top of the pop and R&B charts worldwide.  "At The Hop" remained #1 for an astounding 7 weeks, the first record ever to reach that success, and  it has remained a rock and roll classic to this day.  Barry) and “You Don't Own Me” (Lesley Gore). He also produced for Danny and The Juniors, “Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay." In the Mid ‘60s, John, Dave and local D.J. Ray Gilmore formed a group called “The Spokesmen” and released “The Dawn of Correction," an answer song to the enormous hit “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire. At the same time, John was producing for other artists when he discovered a young man, Leon Huff, who later teamed up with Kenny Gamble and became one of the most prolific songwriting teams in the history of rock and roll, defining an entire category of Black popular music known as "The Sound of Philadelphia." He also discovered one of the most prolific duos of all time, Daryl Hall and John Oates. With them he produced two albums. In 1965, John and Dave started their own publishing company, discovering and signing new songwriters. The company was very successful, and in 1984, it was sold to Michael Jackson. In 1967, John, Dave and Local D.J. Ray Gilmore wrote the song, "Sadie The Cleaning Lady," which became a huge hit in Australia with singer, Johnny Farnham. John moved to L.A. in the ‘70s, where he found success writing and producing for movies and television. He produced the soundtrack for the James Caan/Marsha Mason movie, “Cinderella Liberty," and also produced the title song for the Cliff Robertson movie “Ace Eli and Roger of the Sky.” In the mid ‘70s, he was music supervisor for the hugely successful “Sid and Marty Kroft Comedy Hour." This was in conjunction with an ABC Comedy Hour and network special which launched the new ABC season. During that time, John wrote and produced the music for the show, and was hands on with the mixing and editing. In the late ‘70s, he also wrote the theme song for ABC Sports, which ran for two years. Las Vegas was also becoming a happening place for singers and performers. So it would seem appropriate that John would spend two years of his life working with one of the most successful performers of all time, Wayne Newton. He produced two of Wayne's albums and also produced and wrote songs for a Christmas television special for Wayne on CBS. In the mid ‘80s, John teamed up with one of the great film animators of all time, Ralph Bakshi. Ralph, known for the controversial film “Fritz The Cat," and also the highly regarded films “American Pop” and “Lord Of The Rings," needed songs for his upcoming animated film “Hey Good Lookin." John collaborated with the extremely talented writer/singer Ric Sandler, and they wrote and arranged all 18 songs in the film, which John produced.  Ric also performed all of the songs.  Time Magazine and Playboy raved about the film and later called it a cult classic. Through the years, John has produced albums and singles for companies such as CBS, Warner Bros., Polydor, Atlantic, Paramount, 20th Century, MGM and ABC Records. Madara & White songs have reached millions of people through radio, films and television. Worldwide sales of their songs and productions have reached over 2 hundred million records.  Their songs have appeared on some of the biggest grossing soundtrack albums of all time, including “American Graffiti” and “Woodstock” (At The Hop), “Grease” (Rock and Roll is Here to Stay), “Hairspray” (The Fly and You Don't Own Me), “Mr. Holland's Opus” (1-2-3), and “Dirty Dancing” and “The First Wives Club” (You Don't Own Me). It was the 1996 hit film, “The First Wives Club," that paid the contemporary power of their talent the ultimate compliment by not only featuring “You Don't Own Me” but by making it the theme of the movie. Contemporary, in fact, has proven to be one of the mainstays of John Madara's contributions through the years. He has consistently offered the world of music songs that speak clearly of given eras, but have equal impact on all eras. John has continued to write and produce music, working with young, up-and-coming artists. He has always been a futurist, excited about working with new technology and incorporating it into his music and productions. His hands-on approach to every project he is involved in, whether it be as a writer, producer, music supervisor, editor, engineer or mixer, has enabled John to maintain the sound that is uniquely his own. In March of 2001, “At The Hop” was voted by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the top 100 songs of the century. The soundtrack album, “Grease," was voted one of the top albums of the century. “Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay” is featured on that album.

PBS, ABCI LOVE History of Vocals n Music, Rock & Roll/Soul & Today I Get to go Back BEFORE my Time on Earth in the Rock & Soul Chart Dial to an AWESOME vocalist in the Music Era. And with New Music From The Heart & a Single "After You". Larry also as a  New Jazz Album & a Single with Billy Vera.. And He's Got More Music, Concerts & TV Appearances Too.Larry Chance was the driving force behind the group's formation and success. Chance grew up in Philadelphia and attended high school with Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, and Danny Rapp of Danny & the Juniors. But it was not until 1957 that he moved with his parents to the Bronx after high school, that his musical career took off.Chance formed a group at the Tecumsa Social Club, known as the Hi-Hatters. The group was Chance, Bob Del Din, Eddie Harder, Larry Palombo and John Wray. Later, in 1961, the Earls lost their original member Larry Palombo in an army skydiving accident. In 1961, Rome released the Earls' first record – "Life is But a Dream" (Rome 101 – 1961)[2] b/w "It's You" (and in the late 1970s released with "Whoever You Are" as the B-side). The group then performed with Murray the K and on Dick Clark's American Bandstand show. They released another record that year, "Looking For My Baby" (Rome 102) b/w "Cross My Heart".In 1962, the group hooked up with Stan Vincent and recorded "Remember Then" for Old Town Records (Old Town 1130) b/w "Let's Waddle".[2] It was a hit, peaking at #24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963. Chance co-wrote the group's next single "Never" b/w "I Keep A-Tellin You" (Old Town 1133–1963). The group scored another hit in 1963 on Old Town with "Eyes" b/w "Look My Way" (Old Town 1141). Later, a demo "I Believe" was released (Old Town 1149–1963) b/w "Don't Forget".[2] "I Believe" became a much bigger record from the 1970s onward as it received heavy airplay on NYC oldies radio.Chance later had a brief solo career, recording "Let Them Talk". He returned to the Earls who, at that time, had two new members – Bob Moricco and Ronnie Calabrese. The group started playing their own instruments and, in 1967, recorded "If I Could Do It Over" b/w "Papa" (Mr. G 801 – 1967), and a track for ABC Records, "Its Been a Long Time Coming" b/w "In My Lonely Room" (ABC 11109–1967).The group continued performing into the 1970s and, in 1977, they released a disco version of The Velvets' "Tonight (Could Be the Night)." By 1983, the group's personnel were Chance, Ronnie Calabrese, Colon Rello, Bobby Tribuzio and Tony Obert, and they recorded Larry Chance and the Earls – Today. From 1989-1993, the group consisted of: Larry Chance, Bobby Tribuzzio, Bob Coleman, Art Loria (formerly of The Belmonts) and T.J. Barbella. This roster continued a busy performance schedule and studio works. In 1989, they were on Broadway performing in the original production of A Bronx Tale, a one man play by Chazz Palminteri. They recorded the theme song of the production "Streets of the Bronx", which was slated to appear on the soundtrack of the motion picture A Bronx Tale, however a different version of the song was eventually chosen. Two albums were released: Larry Chance and the Earls (Live!) and Earl Change. Another single released in 1989 was "Elvis:He's Alive", which was warmly received by critics and received a BMI Award of Recognition of a Musical Work. They were nominated as "Best Musical Act" in Atlantic City for their eight week run at The Claridge Hotel, starring with Sal Richards.LarryChanceandtheEarls.com© 2022 Building Abundant Success!!2022 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Episode 018: Eighteen Reasons to ForgetThe Groop - Woman You're Breaking Me (Australia 1967) A fine beat combo from down under that produced three albums and a handful of singles during their brief three year career.  With it's stomping beat and frenetic pace , this title track from their final album together may be the group's finest moment. The Rugbys - You, I (US 1969) A tough and scorching number from a Louisville, KY obscurity that scraped the bottom of the charts with this single, they also produced one album of proto-hard rock that is worth investigating before splitting up.Bubble Puppy - Hot Smoke & Sasafrass (US 1969) This San Antonio, Texas band is most famous for this single, which is arguably one of the finest examples of American hard psych.  From it's feedback intro to the blistering riff that kicks it off, this single packs more in two and a half minutes than most albums of the time even attempted.  After one LP for the International Artists label, they'd undergo a name change to Demian and further mine the hard rock path on their sole album for ABC Records. The Balloon Farm - A Question of Temperature (US 1967) Walking the fine line between garage and hard rock comes this classic American single from an NYC outfit that produced only two singles.  The psychedelic hints also further cements the genre bending the band exudes with this singleThe Attack - Magic in the Air (UK 1967) An unreleased single from one of the UK's finest freakbeat bands.  Their entire catalog is solid and perfectly illustrates the progression from R&B beat combo to acid drenched psychedelia that most bands went through.Wimple Winch - Atmposhpere (UK 1967) Another contender for freakbeat kings of the UK is this motley bunch, whose riffs were years ahead of their time.  Juxtaposing a brutal hard rock section against a bridge reminiscent of the Beach Boys is just one of the many things this band executed flawlessly.  After a handful of singles they'd eventually morph into the more prog minded Pacific Drift.Eire Apparent - The Clown (UK 1968) One of the few bands that can boast of having their debut album produced by Jimi Hendrix, Eire Apparent released one of the finest UK psych albums that often goes overlooked for more rarer yet not as musically adept work.  This twisted ode to a clown features incredible backwards guitar work and a smokin' heavy rhythm section.  Majority One - Get Back Home (UK 1969) This UK band made their name across the continent as The Majority before a relocation to France and a name change to Majority One.  Their lone album features many fine pop-psych tunes, but nothing quite as searing as this single only b-side that shows them testing out the hard rock waters. The Nazz - Open My Eyes (US 1968) Todd Rundgren's first vehicle for his songwriting was this band that eventually scored a minor hit with this proto-power pop single.  The single stands as one of the finest psychedelic songs by an American band and also shows an obvious UK psych influence.  The phasing on the bridge alone warrants this one a place in the history books.Eric Burdon and The Animals - The Madman (UK 1968) This song was also released  as a single by Dantalian's Chariot - which featured a young Andy Summers who would go on to much success with The Police - and then mysteriously appeared in longer form with Eric Burdon on lead on his 1968 album Love Is.  This extended version stretches the original's demented groove into an eight minute acid drenched work out.

What the Riff?!?
1979 - November: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Damn the Torpedoes”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2021 35:49

Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and is the album where the group truly broke out into serious commercial success.  They had done well with their first album, with "Breakdown" breaking into the top 40, and "American Girl" receiving some air play.  But this album took the group to a different level.  Damn the Torpedoes was their first top 10 album, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard album charts for 7 weeks.  They were unfortunately kept out of the number 1 slot by the release of Pink Floyd's The Wall.Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are Mike Campbell on guitars and keyboards, Benmont Tench on keyboards and backing vocals, Ron Blair on bass, Stan Lynch on drums and backing vocals, and of course Tom Petty on lead, rhythm guitar, and harmonica.  Petty also produced the album.Damn the Torpedoes takes its name from Admiral Farragut's famous Civil War quote, but also reflects an attitude that the band was feeling.  At the time ABC Records was their distributor and assigned the contract to MCA.  Petty said that they couldn't assign the contract without permission.  MCA sued, and Petty declared bankruptcy as a strategic move to keep MCA at bay.  They finally settled by signing a new contract with Backstreet Records, which was an MCA subsidiary. The times were good for Petty's style of throwback rock and roll.  Disco was quite commercial and beginning to wane, and New Wave was just beginning its run.  MTV would also be a couple of years in the future.  The rock world was starved of solid rock and roll, and Petty was ready to step into the void with tight, radio-friendly singlesWe think this album is a winner, but as you know, even the losers get lucky sometimes! RefugeeThis is the second single from the album, released in January 1980.  It went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Petty and Mike Campbell wrote this, and it was one of the first songs Campbell wrote.  The song reflects the band's reaction to the pressures of the music business, and the struggle they had with MCA.What Are You Doin' In My Life?A deeper cut, this track is about a stalker girl that the guy can't make go away.  "Well, you're the last woman in the world that thrills me.  Now you got my girlfriend trying to kill me.  Honey, my friends think that I've gone crazy.  Can't you figure out that you ain't my baby?"Even The LosersBelieve it or not, this was not released as a single on the album outside of Australia.  There's a story behind this song.  Petty had a crush on a girl named Cindy in junior high school.  Years later in Gainesville, Florida, he hooked up with Cindy.  The next morning, Cindy told him their relationship consisted of only that night.  During that night, Petty realized that he needed to be in a rock and roll band, and this song sums up that night.Don't Do Me Like ThatThis is the first single from the album.  Petty wrote the song back in 1974 with a band called Mudcrutch.  This was Petty's first top 10 hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The singer relays the story of a friend who got his heart broken, and asks that his girlfriend not do the same.  I really like the sound of the organ on this piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Rose by Bette Midler (Main Theme from the motion picture The Rose)The song was a huge hit for Midler.  She played the main character, Mary Rose Foster, in this movie loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. STAFF PICKS:You're Only Lonely by JD SoutherRob starts off the staff picks with a track  from Detroit born, Amarillo raised JD Souther.  His former roommate, Glenn Frey, sings backup on this song, along with Phil Everly and Jackson Browne.  JD Souther co-wrote a number of songs for the Eagles, which explains why this song may have a bit of an Eagles sound to it. Driver's Seat by Sniff N' The TearsWayne's brings us a one hit wonder.  It maintains a simple chord structure throughout, but builds in intensity as the song progresses.  Although we think of it as a driving song, the lyrics are really about disjointed feelings following a breakup, and not understanding how things would be over with someone you had been with so long.Good Girls Don't by The KnackBrian's staff pick was the follow-up to the massive hit "My Sharona."  Lead man Doug Fieger wrote this song in 1972, but couldn't get anyone to pick it up at the time.  He hated it by the time The Knack tried it, and they got it right in one take. Jane by Jefferson StarshipBruce brings us a hit from Jefferson Starship while Georgia native Mickey Thomas was front man.  It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Bassist David Freiberg wrote the lyrics (along with Jim McPherson) inspired by an old girlfriend. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Is There Anybody Out There by Pink FloydWhen The Wall kept Damn the Torpedoes stuck at number two, Tom Petty told Westwood One, "I love Pink Floyd but I hated them that year."

The only thing either of us knew about this week’s movie was that it was incredibly well-respected, and it inspired a lot of great mockumentaries that came after. So imagine our surprise (sort of) when we sat through a sprawling, lackluster, aimless movie that feels more Important(TM) than it is good. Perhaps it’s the relentless cynicism, or the overly ambitious scope of the characters and plot that make this so frustrating, and frustrating it is. This movie is, to put it mildly, wasting the talents of at least a dozen of the 70’s best character actors, though one star’s debut performance does shine through. You’re never really done with Stanley Kubrick, no matter how hard you try. I mean, yes, we did an entire series on the little tyrant a year ago, and we named an entire rule about him. But at least when we watched those movies, there was something interesting and unique to hold onto. This movie, on the other hand, is a self-indulgent, boring adaptation of a pretty awesome story. I mean, how does the great Stanley Kubrick mess up the first English-language antihero? Perhaps it’s because he’s so focused on creating truly stunning film portraits composed with candlelight that he forgot to, you know, direct. Add to it one of the most uncharismatic lead performances in movie history and folks, we might just have the worst Kubrick movie ever here. Today on Conversations from Here I speak with Memphis-raised author of "Tom Petty and Me"-- the former DJ and music industry promo man JON SCOTT! Throughout his decades in the music world, he has the distinction of having worked with some of the biggest names in the business. He is also the guy who, in 1977, boldly pushed for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to be heard on the radio, despite resistance from the powers-that-be at ABC Records. The rest, as they say, is history. His epic friendship with Tom lasted 40+ years, until Tom's untimely death in 2017. We talk about EVERYTHING-- including a whole lot of Tom Petty stories involving acts of kindness, record industry craziness, funny faxes and the friendship of a lifetime. In true Southern fashion, it's a long chat, but well worth your time. Settle in-- and enjoy!   (PS: Please forgive the odd little transition at around 1:13:34 where I pause for a bathroom-break! El álbum fue escrito principalmente por los miembros de la banda Donald Fagen y Walter Becker, registrado en agosto de 1972 en The Village Recorder En Los Angeles, y producido por Gary Katz. Through many serendipitous moments, Jon appeared at the right time to help get Tom's first album played on the radio and changed the careers of both men. Happy Birthday to John Madara!! Iconic Hit Writer: "At The Hop", "Rockn Roll is Here to Stay", "You Don't Own Me" "1-2-3" & More John Madara was born & grew up in Philadelphia, PA at a time when the city was teeming with groups and artists such as The Spaniels, the Clovers, Harvey and the Moonglows, Billy Ward and the Dominos and the great Jackie Wilson. Rock and Roll was starting to take root and John Madara was destined to make rock and roll history. In 1957, John launched his solo career, with his first record, "Be My Girl," reaching the national charts. That same year, John co-wrote with Dave White a song called “Do The Bop." On the advice of Dick Clark, whose local show, American Bandstand, had just gone national, the title and lyrics were changed to “At The Hop." Danny and the Juniors, recorded it, and by Christmas of 1957, it had reached the top of the pop and R&B charts worldwide. “At The Hop” remained #1 for an astounding 7 weeks, the first record ever to reach that success, and it has remained a rock and roll classic to this day. Following “At The Hop," John produced and co-wrote with Dave such mega-hits as “The Fly” (Chubby Checker)“You Don’t Own Me” (Lesley Gore) among other smash hits. He also produced for Danny and The Juniors, “Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay." In 1965, John and Dave started their own publishing company, discovering and signing new songwriters. The company was very successful, and in 1984, it was sold to Michael Jackson. In the Mid ‘60s, John and Dave formed a group called “The Spokesmen” and released “The Dawn of Correction," an answer song to the enormous hit “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire. Through the years, John has produced albums and singles for companies such as CBS, Warner Bros., Polydor, Atlantic, Paramount, 20th Century, MGM and ABC Records. It would seem appropriate that John would spend two years of his life working in Las Vegas was also becoming a happening place for singers and performers. So it ng with one of the most successful performers of all time, Wayne Newton. He produced two of Wayne’s albums and also produced and wrote songs for a Christmas television special for Wayne on CBS. Madara/White songs have reached millions of people through radio, films and television. Worldwide sales of their songs and productions have reached over 2 hundred million records. Their songs have appeared on some of the biggest grossing soundtrack albums of all time, including “American Graffiti” and “Woodstock” (At The Hop), “Grease” (Rock and Roll is Here to Stay), “Hairspray” (The Fly and You Don’t Own Me), “Mr. Holland’s Opus” (1-2-3), and “Dirty Dancing” and “The First Wives Club” (You Don’t Own Me). It was the 1996 hit film, “The First Wives Club," that paid the contemporary power of their talent the ultimate compliment by not only featuring “You Don’t Own Me” but by making it the theme of the movie. John recently finished producing an album with Tony Danza, following a hugely successful radio hit single that he also produced, “The House I Live In.” He is also working on a feature film, “At The Hop.” In 2016, his song with the late singer ,songwriter Dave White "You Don't Own Me" was made a #1 Hit all over again with 19 year old Austrailian singer " Grace" and features G-EAZY. It was Produced by Quincy Jones. ~ thatphillysound.com 2020 All Rights Reserved © 2020 BuildingAbundantSuccess!! Today, 2/15/2020, we pay homage to Ray Charles  Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He was often referred to as "The Genius."[3][4] Charles started losing his vision at the age of 6 due to glaucoma.[2] Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic.[2][5][6] He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums.[7][8][9] While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.[5] Charles' 1960 hit "Georgia On My Mind" was the first of his three career No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. His 1962 album, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, became his first album to top the Billboard 200.[10] Charles had multiple singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboardcharts: 44 on the US R&B singles chart, 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart, 2 on the Hot Country singles charts.[11] Charles is a 17-time Grammy Award winner.[10] He was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987; 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[10] Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by Louis Jordan and Charles Brown.[12] He became friends with Quincy Jones. Their friendship lasted until the end of Charles's life. Frank Sinatra called Ray Charles "the only true genius in show business," although Charles downplayed this notion.[13] Billy Joel said, "This may sound like sacrilege, but I think Ray Charles was more important than Elvis Presley".[14] In 2002, Rolling Stone ranked Charles #10 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time,"[3] and #2 on their list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" in 2008.[15]   #29DaysOfBlackHistory    *Putting People On Game does not own any rights to this music or images* Hit us up or send us a text 214-744-3601! As Diamond Dave would say, "I heard you missed us - we're back!" Back with David Lee Roth, Michael Anthony, and Alex and Eddie Van Halen, this time delving into their second studio album, conveniently entitled Van Halen II. Hot on the heels of their debut album released less than a year prior, Van Halen hit the studios for this second album a week after completing their world tour, and wrapped it up within a week. The big hit from this album was "Dance the Night Away," Van Halen's first top 20 hit, and inspired by Fleetwood Mac.The album notes had a shout-out to the Sheraton hotel in Madison, Wisconsin, which the band trashed the 7th floor while on tour.We hope you enjoy this fun and hard rocking second effort (and second podcast featuring the group) from Van Halen! You're No GoodThis is no Linda Ronstadt cover. Originally performed in 1963 by Dee Dee Warwick, this song was covered by a number of groups, most notably Linda Ronstadt in 1975. We like Van Halen's version just a wee bit better! Check out the dueling screams from Roth's voice and Eddie's guitar.D.O.A.A rocking deep cut - Dead Or Alive was the B-side from the single "Beautiful Girls." Roth tells a down and out story in a proto-rap style: Broken down and dirty, dressed in rags/from the day, my Mama told me boy, you pack your bags"Women In Love...The intro to this song features tap harmonics in the guitar solo leading into this original song. Eddie Van Halen said this song was "a tale about a guy losing a girl to another chick."Beautiful GirlsHere's the other big hit from the album (Dance the Night Away being the first). This is a fun, syncopated beach song: "She had a drink in her hand, she had her toes in the sand, and wooh! What a beautiful girl!" ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the Television Series “All In the Family”The final episode of "All In the Family" would air in April 1979.STAFF PICKS:"Roller” by April WineWayne's staff pick brings us Canadian rockers April Wine. With three guitars (a rhythm and two leads), this hit describes a woman at the high stakes tables in the casino. It retains that 70's hard rock feel. April Wine was often selected as a "warm-up band" for bigger acts.“Crazy Love” by PocoBruce takes the tempo down a bit with this biggest hit from the California country rock group Poco. This song was originally intended to be a song for the Cotton-Young band, but ABC Records had the group continue with the Poco name.“Blow Away” by George HarrisonBrian's staff pick features former Beatles guitarist George Harrison. This song was considered a disco song by Harrison, and he said that it was one of the simplest compositions he ever wrote. The song arose from - believe it or not - frustration over a leaky roof.“I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap TrickRob finishes off the staff picks a track that is identified by its live version much more than its studio cut. The studio version came out in 1977, but the live version dropped in April 1979, and Rob profiles the two. This is Cheap Trick's biggest hit. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Take It to the Top” by Dixie DregsWe wrap up this week's podcast with this prog rock group well known for their highly talented instrumental work.

Lakeside - Outrageous Master & Edit By Petko Turner Here >> https://hypeddit.com/track/b38llw Formed in Dayton, Ohio, U.S. from the combination of members of two groups - The Montereys and The Nomads. Originally named Ohio Lakeside Express. They met Frank Wilson just before he'd quit Motown and they were signed at ABC Records and they released their debut in 1977 produced by Frank Wilson. In 1978 their manager and friend Dick Griffey founded Solar and signed the group. Norman Whitfield as well had made them an offer for Whitfield Records but Lakeside turned it down. They contributed instead to Willie Hutch' "In Tune" released in Whitfield's label. They also contributed in "Danceland" (from Carrie Lucas' third album in 1979) and produced 7th Wonder's "Stop Before You Break My Heart" (from their third and last album). They would release nine albums at Solar between 1978 - 1990. Their main line up (after several changes) were Otis Stokes (guitar, vocals), Thomas Shelby (lead vocals), Mark Adam Wood, Jr. (lead vocals, keyboards), Stephen Shockley (guitar), Fred Alexander Jr. (drums), Tiemeyer McCain (lead vocals), Marvin Craig (bass), Fred Lewis (2) (percussion), Norman Beavers (keyboards). They became famous for their flamboyant theatrical costumes on their album covers and for the rich, heavy, uplifting funk soul sound. Their biggest legacy remains their 1980 single "Fantastic Voyage" (No.1 in the r'n'b charts, the closest they came to a crossover success - No.55 in the U.S. pop chart) that was included in the soundtrack of 1992's "South Central" and Coolio covered -among other rappers- in 1994. Other big hits are "It's All The Way Live" (No.4 in 1977, R'n'B charts), their cover on The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (1981, No.5, R'n'B charts), "Raid" (1983, No.8 R'n'B charts) and "Outrageous" (1984, No.7 R'n'B charts).

Leonard Charles Williams (born February 16, 1945)[1] is an American singer-songwriter and musician, best known for his work during the 1970s. Williams was the lead vocalist for R&B/Soul group Tower of Power. As a soloist, Williams made several hit recordings, including 1978's "Cause I Love You" and 1977's "Choosing You". Williams was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and moved to Oakland, California, at a young age.[2] Learning to play the trumpet in elementary school fueled his interest in music; his skills as a vocalist were first nurtured by singing in gospel choirs and groups around the Bay Area. He worked with several notable artists, such as Sly Stone, Andraé Crouch, Billy Preston and members of the Hawkins family, Edwin, Walter and Tramaine. After winning several local talent contests, Williams signed his first recording contract with Fantasy Records. He cut two singles for the label, including "Lisa's Gone" and "Feelin Blue", written by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1972, Williams joined the emerging funk band Tower of Power. A string of hits followed, including "So Very Hard to Go", "What Is Hip", "Don't Change Horses (In The Middle of the Stream)" and "Willing To Learn". During his two years with the group, Williams participated in three albums: Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal and the gold LP Tower of Power. Williams and Tower of Power toured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. While still with Tower of Power, he recorded his first solo album Pray for the Lion for Warner Bros. Records in 1974. At the end of 1975, Williams left the band and returned to his solo projects. Initially signing with Motown Records in 1975, he later moved to ABC Records in 1977 (which was then purchased by MCA Records in 1979). With producer Frank Wilson at the helm and songwriters such as Judy Wieder, Clay Drayton, Terry McFadden, and John Footman, over the next four years, he scored ten chart hits, including "Shoo Doo FuFu Ooh", "Choosing You", "You Got Me Running", "Love Hurt Me Love Healed Me", "Here's to the Lady," and "Midnight Girl". Williams recorded four more albums from 1977 to 1980: Choosing You, his first gold LP; Spark of Love (contains the hits "You Got Me Running", and "Cause I Love You" as well as "Midnight Girl"); Love Current; "Taking Chances" and Let's Do It Today. After leaving MCA, Williams recorded for the independent record labels, Rockshire and Knobhill. In 1986, he was invited to sing vocals on "Don't Make Me Wait For Love", a track from Duotones, a multi-platinum recording by Kenny G. The song became a Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 and R&B hit the following year. His 1978 hit song "Cause I Love You" was sampled by Havoc of Mobb Deep for the track "Nothing Like Home", and by Kanye West for the songs "Overnight Celebrity" by Twista and "I Got A Love" by Jin. The track was sampled a fourth time in 2007 by Scarface for his single "Girl You Know" featuring Trey Songz & Young Jeezysampled "Let's Talk It Over" for his single "I Do" featuring Jay-Z and Andre 3000. His song "Half Past Love" was also sampled by The Coup for their 2006 single "My Favorite Mutiny" featuring Black Thought of The Roots and Talib Kweli of Black Star.Since that time, Williams has continued his solo career, touring the US, Europe and South Africa, and has also expanded his career to include acting, starring in several stage plays, including Love on Lay Away starring Deborah Cox, Mel Jackson and Martha Wash, What Men Don't Tell starring Kenny Lattimore, Chante Moore, and Dottie Peoples, and When A Woman's Fed Up. He is also one of the featured artists on Urbanland Music's DVD The Big Show, recorded at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 29, 2002. At the age of thirteen, Stephen Bishop found himself at a crossroads. A clarinetist with hopes of becoming a History teacher, he was forever changed after watching the Beatles one night on "The Ed Sullivan Show." His brother Denny bought Stephen an electric guitar and a "Mel Bay" chordbook and turned his stereo into an amp so Stephen could play music. Stephen began to learn to play guitar and make up his own chords as well, writing his first song, "Surf's Turf.." a pathetic sounding intrumental. He formed a band called, "The Weeds" and began to play at local fraternity parties incorporating his own original songs with various songs from top 40...Stephen made a trip to Los Angeles at 17... eventually landing a publishing deal at $50 a week. After years of trying to make it, a good friend, Leah Kunkel got some of Stephen's songs to Art Garfunkel, who wound up recording two of them on his gold recording, "Breakaway." He started playing around town singing his songs in person for artists like, Barbra Streisand...Bette Midler..Diana Ross." Shortly thereafter, he was signed to ABC Records who released his first album, "Careless." He had two hits from the album.."Save It For a Rainy Day," and "On and On".. Soon the album went gold, as well as his next album, "Bish." He sang the hit theme,"It Might Be You," for the movie, "Tootsie," as well as writing and/or singing 13 other films including, "Animal House."and composing "Separate Lives," for the film "White Nights." His songs have been recorded by: Beyonce, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Steve Perry, Stephanie Mills, Kenny Loggins, Johnny Mathis, Phoebe Snow, David Crosby, The Four Tops, Aswad and Pavarotti. He appeared as the "Charming Guitar Player" in "Animal House," wherein John Belushi slammed his guitar to smithereens in the Toga Party scene. Stephen was nominated for two Grammys and awarded an Oscar nomination for his song, "Separate Lives," which became a No. 1 hit for Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. In Eric Clapton's autobiography, Eric mentions Stephen as "One of the great singer songwriters." Stephen just released his 25 year Anniversary Album, "Bowling in Paris," Remastered with new artwork and the album features Sting on bass and vocals, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins and is produced by Michael Omartian and Phil Collins.Stephen has released two new albums last year.."Be Here Then," a new studio album and "Stephen Bishop LIVE," an album of his hits and popular favorites as well as a few new songs. He has also returned from a successful tour in Asia last year.. "His newest single is called, "Pretty Baby." from his new studio Album, "be here then." Recently, Beyonce released her Platinum Beyonce Album which includes, "Ring Off.." co-written by Stephen and Beyonce. Stephen just released his newest album, “Blueprint,” Produced by Jon Gilutin.

They are, for me, the All Time Greatest Artists ( with the Beatles and Bob... ). It is impossible to describe the Steely Dan's Style... It sounds very californian but with a New Yorker touch'.... These 3 albums sounds very 70' with very good quality of recording. Welcome in the 70's wild side music... The Pre-Dan Era Donald Fagen is born in Passaic, New Jersey on January 10, 1948. Walter Becker is born in New York City on February 20, 1950. They both grew up as disaffected suburban youths, going to school in the daytime and listening to the music of their idols Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane at night. They both feel an affinity with the "Jazz Life." Donald Fagen meets Walter Becker at Bard College in Annandale-On Hudson, New York in 1967. Fagen, a piano player, hears someone playing blues guitar in a student lounge and decides he must introduce himself. He discovers Becker playing a red Epiphone guitar and finds that they share the same interests in music and ironic senses of humor. A partnership is born. They form several college bands including "The Leather Canary" (which fellow Bard student Chevy Chase sat in with a couple of times) and "The Don Fagen Trio." Fagen and Becker also start to write songs together. Fagen graduates Bard in 1969 with an English degree. Becker also leaves Annandale. The two of them move to Brooklyn, New York and decide to peddle their songs at the famous Brill Building in Manhattan. They don't meet with much success, but they make an important early connection with Kenny Vance of Jay and the Americans. Vance helps them record some demos of their early material and gets them some odd jobs including doing the soundtrack for the low-budget Richard Pryor film "You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It." Vance also gets Becker and Fagen gigs as back-up musicians on Jay and the Americans' 1970-71 tour. Jay Black disaffectionately labels Donald and Walter as "Starkweather and Manson." Fagen and Becker also meet another aspiring producer, Gary Katz, in New York. Shortly afterwards, Katz gets a job as staff producer at ABC Records in Los Angeles and also secures two staff songwriter positions for Fagen and Becker. With the hopes of making it big as songwriters, Donald and Walter move to L.A. in November 1971. The Early Steely Dan Era After realizing that the songs they were writing were too sophisticated for the other artists on the ABC roster (Three Dog Night, Dusty Springfield), Donald and Walter secretly begin to put together their own band with Gary Katz as their producer. They enlist Denny Dias as a guitarist, whom Becker and Fagen had met earlier in New York through an advertisement Dias placed in "The Village Voice" newspaper, reading "Looking for keyboardist and bassist. Must have jazz chops!" Dias flies out to the west coast to help the boys put together the band. "Can't Buy A Thrill" With Fagen on keyboards and vocals and Becker on bass, they decide to sign up guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder. With the core band recruited, Donald and Walter need a name for their group. Since both of them were avid readers of 1950's "Beat" literature, they decided to name the band "Steely Dan" after a dildo in William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch." The band begins rehearsing after work in a cramped, abandoned office in the ABC building and begins recording with Roger (The Immortal) Nichols, a former nuclear engineer, as their recording engineer, a relationship that continues to this day. Since Fagen was uncomfortable as the lead singer, they also decided to sign up vocalist David Palmer as the front man. Since Palmer's vocal style didn't convey the attitude that Becker and Fagen wanted for most of the songs, and they also needed to finish the album, Donald reluctantly sang lead vocals on all but three songs on their debut album, which they named "Can't Buy A Thrill." An interesting portent of things to come, however, is the credited use of outside studio musicians such as Elliot Randall and Jerome Richardson on several solos. The album is released in October 1972 without much fanfare, but surprises everyone by spawning a runaway hit "Do It Again" which reaches #6 on the charts. ABC pressures the band to do a quick tour and Becker and Fagen reluctantly acquiesce. A second hit "Reelin' In The Years" emerges and reaches #11 on the charts. "Can't Buy A Thrill" becomes a gold record and peaks at #17 on the charts. As the band begins to record their next album, Fagen takes over on all lead vocals and David Palmer leaves the group. "Countdown to Ecstasy" Following the surprising commercial success of "Can't Buy a Thrill", Steely Dan come under tremendous pressure from ABC Records to continue touring to promote the album, while at the same time recording a new one. Consequently, the songs for their second album are hurriedly recorded in between tour stops during 1973. Fagen and Becker later said this gave the recorded songs a live kind of feel, since they were in the studio with basically their touring band. The songs that become the "Countdown to Ecstasy" album, released in July 1973, thus are more stretched-out, as they are in the live settings of the time. "Showbiz Kids" is the first single to be released, and despite Rick Derringer's amazing slide guitar work, it only reaches #61 on the charts. It was speculated later that the expletive used in the song did not popularize it with radio program directors. "My Old School", an homage to their days at Bard, also does not fare well as a single and peaks at #63. Despite the lack of a hit single, "Countdown" receives excellent reviews and spawns such radio favorites as "Bodhisattva" and "My Old School", with the latter becoming a classic encore sing-along for their live shows in the 90's. "Pretzel Logic" Under ABC's pressure to produce more hit singles, Fagen and Becker write some shorter songs for their next album "Pretzel Logic." This album is released in March, 1974 and spawns their biggest hit, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" which reaches #3 in March 1974. Becker and Fagen are expanding on their practice of bringing in other studio musicians as they increasingly find the core band unable to achieve the sound they want on all of their songs. One of the session men is Jeff Porcaro and a long and fruitful relationship with Fagen and Becker begins. A second tour is arranged including Porcaro as second drummer, a new Katz discovery Michael McDonald on back-up vocals and keyboards, and another vocalist Royce Jones (Ambrosia). While this band was musically superior to the one on the first tour, the rigors of tour travel and opening for heavy metal bands is not to Fagen and Becker's liking. After a July 4, 1974 show at the Santa Monica Civic Center in California, they swear off touring for the immediate future and decide to focus on writing and recording. This prompts Baxter, who loves the road life, to leave and join the Doobie Brothers. Jim Hodder also quits as "Pretzel Logic" goes gold and reaches #8 on the charts. > From Wikipedia

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Ray Charles was a border walker. He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business." The influences upon his music were jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and even country. His piano playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles. Criticized and beloved, Ray Charles’ influence stemmed from his capacity to embrace and adapt without losing his identity. Come explore what we can learn about how to live our lives through the lens of this incredible musician. WANT TO LISTEN? Leon Ware, respected songwriter and producer of some of soul music's most coveted recordings is in a somber, reflective mood. Touting. His latest collection, “Moonride” is trademark, smooth, soulful, romantic Ware, the kind of music that helped Ware craft his most noted recording, Marvin Gaye's historic “I Want You” album in 1976. However, that album alone doesn't do Ware, who remains largely unknown outside specialist soul music circles justice. Born In Detroit, MI in 1940 it was natural that Ware would find his first home at Motown, writing for the likes of the Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Miracle, Kim Weston and Isley Brothers. Writing for Ike & Tina Turner's 1971 album “‘Nuff Said” for United Artists landed Ware a solo deal at the label resulting in 1972's self titled debut album, though his vocal career actually began 12 years earlier in 1960 with ABC Records. However, Motown would provide Ware some of his most memorable successes. In the early '70's he formed a collaborative partnership with Diana Ross' younger brother Arthur “T-Boy” Ross resulting in Michael Jackson's “I Wanna Be Where You Are” (from the "Got To Be There" album) and of course, Marvin Gaye's historic “I Want You”. Further collaborations throughout the decade with the likes of Minnie Riperton, AWB, Donny Hathaway, Quincy Jones, the Miracles, Bobby Womack. What, perhaps, though is most compelling about Ware's story is the longevity of his songwriting career. On into the '80's and '90's he has received songwriting credits for the likes of Loose Ends, Jeffrey Osborne, Teena Marie, James Ingram, Isley's, Chico Debarge and Maxwell (“Sumthin' Sumthin'”).
