We welcomed Dr. Steve B. Howell to the program for our discussion about exoplanets. I started the interview by asking our guest for the latest exoplanet news, trends and if he was satisfied with the rate of discovery since exoplanets came into our knowledge base. We had an excellent conversation about search for life with exoplanets, SETI, even looking for plausible life conditions on an exoplanet moon. We focused on exploration, addressed budgets and private sector exploration, and of course raised the question of the definition of life constituting our search. We had multiple email comments and questions with one call. Dr. Howell is a great guest and for sure will join us again on this topic. As the general election reaches its final week, host Sascha O'Sullivan takes us inside the last push of the campaign. She explores how parties use every trick of the trade, from advertising to frantic leafleting, to try to capture every possible vote and travels to the BBC debate in Nottingham where the main party leaders had one final face off.Ayesha Hazarika, broadcaster and former adviser to Ed Miliband, explains how many voters begin tune into an election campaign only once they reach the last 10 days, and warns about the impact of gaffes during the final stretch.Former Conservative Party staffer Cleo Watson tells Sascha a scandalous story from the last week of the Vote Leave campaign which never made it to the press. Ben Guerin, one of the advertising masterminds of Boris Johnson's 2019 election victory, relates how parties use attack ads in the last few days. And Craig Oliver, Downing Street Director of Communications for David Cameron, gives us tips for winning the "ground war" by focusing relentlessly on the constituencies which matter the most.Sascha also speaks to pollster James Johnson who says that in the last week, many candidates can be overcome with a misguided optimism about their prospects — and tells us what happens campaign HQs get their data wrong. Also, Jeremy Corbyn's former head of press Steve Howell takes us inside Labour's 2017 campaign, while Sean Kemp, former special adviser to Nick Clegg, gives us a run down on Lib Dem targeting tactics in the final week. 39: A Voice of Triumph With Steve Howell

SportSquire

This week's episode of SportSquire is a special one as Brad interviews his older brother Steve Howell. Steve has an incredible story of triumph to speak about as he has learned to navigate his newly found diagnosis of Spasmodic Dysphonia. Spasmodic Dysphonia is a voice disorder that causes involuntary spasms of the voice box or larynx. Steve speaks at the end of the episode about his experiences with struggling with losing his voice and gives advice to others who are seeking representation and support with this neurological disorder. The episode does not start there however, it highlights Steve's unique story of being a Division 1 College Quarterback, to selling high end real estate, to transitioning into a full time acting pursuit of acting as a career. Steve was a standout high school basketball and football player who turned down several division I scholarship basketball offers to pursue his dream of playing Division 1 football as a Quarterback. He began his college career at Montgomery College where he took over the starting spot as a Freshmen and helped turn the program into a top 3 school in the nation and led the Junior College Division in passing yards and touchdown passes his Sophomore year despite missing games at the end of the season after separating his shoulder and fracturing his clavicle. Before the injury he was being recruited by California, Auburn, Kansas State, and several other schools. He ended up going to the University of Massachusetts and celebrated in an Atlantic 10 Championship as a Junior. After his playing career was over he landed a job working in real estate in the Wilmington, North Carolina region. He speaks about how his transition into acting happened while in North Carolina and how he landed the series role of a highly touted Arkansas QB Troy Jameson who gets drafted in the TV Series, One Tree Hill. Steve speaks about his experiences with acting and how he poured everything into learning the craft and improving his skillset, presence, and artistry when on screen. Throughout his career his was featured in One Tree Hill, Criminal Minds, Bold and Beautiful (Still laugh about this one), Coors Light Commercial with Jim Mora (aired during entire NFL Season), and won several awards in his work in the short film arena. He speaks about how he was so close to landing so many lead roles during his time in Los Angeles but knows everything has led him to exactly where he was supposed to be. He met his wife Rohini in L.A. and they both decided to move to New York City to support Rohini's dream of realizing her unreal artistic talents at the New York Academy of Art and for Steve to pursue business interests. This is a story of Triumph and hopefully and inspiration for those who listen that you should never settle! Steve has pivoted so many times in his life and everything he has done has been with intent focus and an unbelievably hard work ethic. His attitude, faith, and support from family/friends have really helped him through a challenging diagnosis. His words of encouragement to those going through the same or similar challenge as him is inspiring. Great story from a great individual! In honor of raising awareness for Spasmodic Dysphonia, we will be editing/clipping the specific portion of this interview (and releasing in it's own segment) in which Steve talks specifically about his experiences and what he has learned through the process to help others who are struggling and seeking counsel as they navigate their new reality. His hope is that he can help bring HOPE to those who are struggling as he has been there. In this edited version, we will expand on useful tips that Steve has found helpful that can be pursued by individuals who are diagnosed with this neurological disorder. In the meantime, we pray for Steve, the physicians overseeing care of this diagnosis, and all individuals who are affected by this disorder that there may one day be a cure.

Interest in gaming is growing with game streaming/esports growing and no sports for a couple major conferences in the fall. So NIU resolved to create a program that not only focused on coaching and strategy but also marketing and game design. This creates a more holistic view of the esports industry and what goes into it. Jacob Brothers got a chance to catch up with Dr. Steve Howell, the director of the sports program at Northern Illinois University. And We got a glimpse into what sort of education you could be looking at when declaring esports as your minor at NIU. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Steve HowellSteve Howell was thirteen when he first heard Mississippi John Hurt fingerpicking country blues. The year was 1965, and the experience became a revelation that opened the door to a new musical universe. Steve knew immediately that tame, folky strumming of the guitar was a thing of the past for him. As Steve’s journey progressed, Mississippi John Hurt begat Blind Willie McTell and Leadbelly. They in turn begat Robert Johnson, Son House, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, and a host of other black acoustic guitar players and vocalists. His interest in rural, folk-blues styles and the history of the music led him to learn more about how this music came to town and melded with the horn-oriented bands prevalent in the cities, creating a strong affinity for him with traditional jazz and the music of New Orleans from the first half of the twentieth century. His musical Odyssey naturally included the pop, country, rock, and blues music of the last half of the century, but always in the background stood the music of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Lester Young, Jack Teagarden, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Chet Atkins, Johnny Smith, Wes Montgomery, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joe Pass, George Van Eps, Lenny Breau, and many other great jazz artists. Although very interested in many other music styles (bebop, rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, and others), the heart of Steve’s playing and singing is rooted in the rural acoustic blues and traditional jazz genres born in the American South. Steve Howell,Dindi,Long AgoSteve Howell,Z's,Long Agowww.makingascene.org,Steve Howell,Steve Howell,I'll Remember April,Long AgoSteve Howell,Song for my Father,Long Ago

Liz and Steve Howell married on April 19, 2014 in Savannah, Georgia. Liz was working as a journalist in Columbus, Georgia when a friend from college introduced her to Steve, who was also living in Columbus, over Facebook. At the time, Steve was in training for the United States Army at Fort Benning. Steve was quick to reach out to Liz, inviting her to a barbecue. She was quick to say yes, which then led to Steve scrambling to throw together a barbecue he never really had planned. Despite the heavy rain that moved the party indoors, the downpour couldn’t wash out the spark between Liz and Steve. In their early days of dating, Steve was sent away to field trainings for weeks at a time, introducing Liz right away to some of the hardships of military life. His month-long trip to Army Ranger School was the true test of their love, as they could only communicate through hand written letters. The distance only made their connection grow stronger. One year later, when Steve was relocated to Savanah, Georgia, Liz transferred to a sister television station in Savannah and moved in with Steve. Although they were living together, they worked completely opposite schedules: Steve worked all day, while Liz took over the overnight shift at the station, leaving dinner time as their sacred couple-time together. It wasn't long before Steve asked Liz to marry him. Their wedding was a southern fairytale. As a married couple, Liz and Steve have lived all over the globe, from Italy to Germany, navigating military life together along with their two young daughters. This episode of XOXO by The Knot talks exclusively with Liz, as Steve is currently deployed in the Middle East. Liz opens up about the hardships and sacrifices that come with life and motherhood as a military spouse. This is their story.(Photo courtesy of Lotus Creative Studios) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

SHOW # 296 – Live Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With “Musicians You Should Know” The Jimmys are out of Wisconsin. The Jimmys have been tearing up stages with their blend of blues, soul, funk and R&B for nearly 10 years. Award-winning keyboardist/singer/songwriter Jimmy Voegeli has assembled an all-star lineup: Perry Weber, veteran guitarist/singer/songwriter; Mauro Magellan (Georgia Satellites) drums; John Wartenweiler bass. I’ll chat with Jimmy (and maybe more) about their journeys to find each other and where the band is heading while we listen to music from the new album, Hot Dish. Chris Yakopcic has actually been on the show from the International Blues Challenge in the past, so it was time to bring him onto the Monday show…and with the release of his new album, The Next Place I Leave.  I’ll chat with Chris about his road to the Blues and the new album and more.  Steve Howell heard Mississippi John Hurt at the age of 13 and things were never the same since.  Throughout his life he has performed and learned and grew his skills.  His latest album, Yes I Believe I Will, is recorded with a trio of friends affectionately known as the Mighty Men and Steve and I will explore his travels and music. Georgie Bonds has a new album entitled Hit It Hard.  Georgie will come back and we will chat about what he has been up to since his last visit.  We’ll also explore the new album and the music Georgie is making.

For the August 20 How On Earth show we offer two features: Kepler Spacecraft's Uncertain Future: (start time 5:48) Are we alone in the cosmos? Are there other planets out there, and could some of them support life?  Or, is Earth somehow unique in its ability to support life?  The Kepler mission was designed to start addressing that question by searching for planets around other stars.  Since its launch in March 2009, the Kepler spacecraft has discovered many diverse candidate planets around other stars, but recently the spacecraft has run into some technical problems.  Dr. Steve Howell from NASA's Ames Research Center talks with co-host Joel Parker about Kepler's past, present and future. Cancer's Impact on Fertility: (start time 14:52) It’s tough enough to receive a cancer diagnosis. For many patients, an added insult is that chemotherapy treatments can render them infertile.  However, there are many options for cancer patients who want to have children, or more children – both men and women. A key problem has been that many of them aren’t educated by oncologists about their fertility options and they jump right into drug treatments. Dr. Laxmi Kondapalli, an assistant professor of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Colorado Denver and head of the CU Cancer Center's Oncofertility Program, talks with co-host Susan Moran about the medical science of take cancer therapies and the latest in fertility-preservation options.
