Last year, I read Surrender, a book by U2 lead singer, Bono. Bill Gates listed this as one of the top books to read at one point, so I picked it up and dove in. I have enjoyed U2s music since I was in high school, and was interested to hear what made Bill Gates recommend his book. The book is partially a journey of U2, but mostly a look at how Bono's view of the world and life has changed over time. Bono grew beyond music in his life to become an activist and try to shape the world into a better place. Whether you agree with his efforts or focus or not, it's admirable that he has tried to be more than a rich and famous singer. He's had to build more skills around how to communicate with others, convince them to take a course of action, and educate himself about the world. In trying to build these skills, he's founded or worked in organizations around his time with U2. Read the rest of Seagull Management

The Garden Tarts (all 3 of us!) were in DC over the weekend with + guest Lauren. AND the U2s. We felt the awe that surrounds of the Kennedy Center Honors and saw Bono speak with Jon Meacham at the Washington National Cathedral. (What an epic venue!) We almost literally ran into Adam Clayton, got glimpses of all four lads at the Kennedy Center, was in the presence of the biggest celebrity we've ever seen, and met some amazing online fan friends IRL! And we mighta heard Bono talk about his buuk as well as recite AC/DC lyrics. We then promptly overserved ourselves too much tequila and then recorded this ep. This is a wild ride.

Our first topic we discuss will be the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Let us know what you think of WTB U2S and if you have anything you would like the boys to discuss! While the normal WTB podcast will be the fellas talking shit, U2S will be released when we think something needs to be discussed.

Join me as I summaries Kleber's lecture on the use of intermaxillary elastics in orthodontics, topics of force magnitude, side effects and how to counter them, use of a sliding jig and stability are described. Force magnitude more important than the size of the elastics · Large variation forces used by orthodontists in Kurol 1996 · Use a gauge on every patient · Excessive = damage to PDL and RR · Force required o Retraction of upper incisors = 250g each side Oesterle 2012 / 350 g Proffit o Individual Class 2 elastics effects · Distalise anterior teeth · Mesial of lower posterior teeth · Extrusion of upper anterior teeth · Extrusion of lower posterior teeth · Rotate occlusal plane clockwise · Retrusive upper lip · Protrusive lower lip How to avoid side effects · Case selection: avoid high angle cases · Avoid upper arch retraction on round wire · Reduce vertical vector o Increase horizontal distance mesial of U2s and L7s o Change the vertical vector by using a sliding jig § Sliding jig moves vector from above the brackets upper, to below the bracket, lower arch force from below the bracket to above the bracket § Sliding jig – directs upper arch forces to the molars – more efficient than to archwire only or canine Class 2 subdivision · Class 2 one side, class 1 other side. · Of dental origin, no skeletal · Usually cant on class 2 side, with arch up on the RHS · Class 2 elastic on effected side · Distalisation on URQ with sliding jig · Retraction of the arch – on rectangular SS – 350g Torque · Can be lost upper incisors · Place torque into the archwire during the retraction – not after retraction Finishing · Triangular elastics Class 2 elastic stability · Patient may posture: assess displaced mandible / CR · Tooth movement: o Bony formation may not be complete o PDL may not be reorganised § REQUIRE 3 months of wear for stability, bone growth and PDL
SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Remember Lilith Fair? Remember how it was the “first” time that women in rock were famous and getting respect, and how that would change everything? That attitude pretty much summed up all of the 1990s. I still have huge nostalgia for that decade, and I do believe lots of important issues were brought to the forefront in every field. I'm not even going to knock the fact that there was actual progress being made. But as with all growth, what we thought of as the be all end all of revolutions pales in comparison to the strides that were made after. And what we forget is that there were significant growth steps even before certain issues gained more popularity. The whole point of this tangent is to remind you that there were women in rock doing sensitive music before the 1990s – ummm Joni Mitchell & Carole King anyone??? – and that even in the big flashy 1980s, there were plenty of women holding their own with the Springsteens & Princes & U2s. I've always followed women in music. I respected Patti Smith & Stevie Nicks, liked Pat Benatar & Joan Jett & Chrissie Hynde, loved the Bangles and the Go-Go's, and had a secret thing for Siouxsie Sioux. And don't even get me started on the Riot Grrrl scene in the 1990s, or Hole or the Breeders. For the late 1980s, though, my two go-to women were Edie Brickell and Natalie Merchant. At some point, everyone needs antidotes to what they normally listen to. It keeps the ears & brain fresh. To counter all the reverb-y bombast of the late 1980s, I chose among others 10,000 Maniacs. This here album was their first to gain widespread recognition – mainly for the songs “What's the Matter Here?”, “Like the Weather”, and the Cat Stevens cover “Peace Train”. The main showcase of course was Natalie – for her vocals, her songwriting, and her ability to choose & own cover tunes. They're the strengths that would carry the Maniacs to even bigger success in the early 1990s, and Natalie Merchant to EVEN BIGGERER success in the mid-late 1990s. There are a bunch of mellow songs of mine that take a page from all this sensitive, laid back stuff. You can hear it most prominently on my mid 1990s home EP, Black-Eyed Susan – especially the title song and the opening track “Higher Ground Again”. Here's a link to the whole thing: Black-Eyed Susan (EP) - https://soundcloud.com/recarea/sets/black-eyed-susan I remember liking most of the album, and playing it frequently on my dorm room turntable. I'd say my favorite is probably “Like the Weather”. Who are some of your favorite women in rock, from any era? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Join me for part 1 of Adith's lecture looking at the vertical dimension in orthodontics and its management. Part 1 looks at 3 cases with vertical management through TADs, TPAs and a re-visit of the management of the Curve of Spee. 1st case TADs for extraction of 4s case · Without TADs can result in ‘bowing effect' – extrusion of incisors and molars. · TAD placed between the upper 5- 6 root o Direct retraction of the labial segment to the TAD o Ligature wire from TAD to archwire 5-6 region, to prevent molar extrusion 2nd case low TPA o ‘Low' TPA = 5mm clearance from the palate o Tongue presses on TPA resulting in intrusive force to molars o Swallow 800/day = 500gm intermittent force o Not enough force to intrude, but enough to provide vertical anchorage (i.e. prevent molar extrusion) 3rd case Curve of Spee 1. High angle = Weak muscles = COS levels with posterior eruption. § Tailored COS treatment = Intrude the incisors 2. Low angle = Strong muscles = COS levels with anterior proclination (due to posterior teeth prevented from erupting with strong muscles) § Tailored COS treatment = extrusion of posterior teeth One piece intrusion arch o TAD in upper 1-1 region and in 5-6 region o Sectional 19x25ss archwire in upper 2-2 brackets 1. Powerchain from archwire to anterior TAD Three piece intrusion arch o TAD in upper 1-1 region and in 5-6 region, with ligature wire from TAD to archwire in 5-6 region o Sectional archwire in upper 2-2 brackets with distal hooks, as well as sectional wire 3-6 o Intrusion: o Powerchain from archwire to anterior TAD o Powerchain from distal hooks (distal to U2s) to TAD U5-6 region Retention tip for anterior intrusion o Leave TAD between upper anterior teeth o Lingual button in VFR o Patient wears light elastic 2Oz from labial TAD over the incisal edge and VFR to the lingual button References Venugopal, A., Manzano, P. and Rengalakshmi, S., 2020.
We’ll be diverging a bit from our usual discussion around higher ed marketing to talk about leadership, which is a topic relevant to anyone who has to work with and through others. Joining us in that conversation is retired Air Force Major General, H. D. “Jake” Polumbo. Over his 34 year career in the Air Force, General Polumbo acquired a great deal of wisdom around how to lead and manage others, even under the most challenging circumstances. We talk about why leaders need to demonstrate compassion for their team the importance of leaders publicly owning up to mistakes tips for making decisions with limited information why character and integrity are essential for any leader. Near the end of the episode, I explain how you can get a signed copy of his book, Leadership at 30,000 Feet for free. General Polumbo is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and over his career he has served in numerous positions of leadership around globe. He holds the distinction as the first and only U.S. Air Force general officer to fly the U2S in combat, completing twenty-one missions in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He is a co-founder of Two Blue Aces, a leadership and strategy consulting firm, and he currently sits on the Aviation Advisory Boards for the Business School of Hawaii Pacific University and Southeastern University, and assists with the operation of the Advanced Mobility Institute at Florida Polytechnic University. I 1957 fløy U2 over Norge for å teste sovjetiske radaranlegg på Kola, uten å varsle norske myndigheter.
