Playliste: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Tenth Avenue freeze-out Michael Jackson - Jam/Billie Jean Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke Gloria Estefan - Turn the beat around U2 - Beautiful day Justin Timberlake with Janet Jackson - Rock your body Paul McCartney - Live and let die Prince - We will rock you/Let's go crazy Prince - Baby I'm a star/Proud Mary The Black Eyed Peas - I gotta feeling Missy Elliott and Katy Perry - Get ur freak on/Work it Shakira - She wolf/Empire/Kashmir Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg - The next episode/California love Kendrick Lamar - Not like us

You thought you knew U2's origin story? Well, did you know no one actually responded to Larry Mullen's post about wanting to start a band on the Mt Temple bulletin board? Or, did you know that the band once had a flutist and two female backing vocalists onstage? Or that they scored their first TV appearance by fooling the RTE booker into thinking they wrote the Ramones' "Glad to See You Go"? Or that the trace elements of Zoo TV's embrace of Dada and surrealism actually dates back to when Bono and Gavin Friday studied mime in 1979 and that theatricality became a big part of U2's stage show at the time? Or, that after every record label in the UK gave U2 a hard pass on all 4 demos they'd done from 1978-1980, they pulled off one of the great cons ever which finally got them signed to Island Records? We've got the stories behind the stories in this deep dive into the U2 Origin Story.
U2 have millions of admirers—and haters: from the fans who regard them as rock's conscience, to the cynics who blanch at lead singer Bono's self-importance. Here's the thing: U2 want to play to both crowds. They know why the haters can't stand them. After a decade of earnestness in the '80s, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen called BS on themselves, rebooting their sound and image for the '90s age of irony. This shouldn't have worked. Instead, U2 became as big as ever, and kept scoring hits. Then, when the whole sardonic thing stopped working for them, at the turn of the millennium, they went back to anthemic U2—and the hits kept coming. Their ability to pivot so many times and keep scoring hits over multiple decades is rare in pop history. Join Chris Molanphy as he explains how U2 pulled this off. How did they balance cool and cringe? How did they outlast new wave, college rock, hair metal and grunge to remain chart-toppers into the era of teenpop and hip-hop? And…what exactly were they thinking when they forced an album onto your iPhone? They don't mean to bug ya, but…why can't we live with or without U2? Podcast production by Kevin Bendis. A great wide-ranging chat with Boy George, who had told me in 1987 that he fancied Larry!

Stephen welcomes legendary U2 frontman Bono for an exclusive extended interview that begins with a trip back in time to the 1970s when, as a high school student, Bono met the woman he would one day marry, and linked up with the men who would become his lifelong bandmates: Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr., and The Edge. Stick around as Bono and Stephen explore the stories in Bono's new book, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.” Original Air Date: November 3rd, 2022. Learn more about your ad choices. Things kick off with some sundry food talk. John shows no interest in party-cut pizza or fruit juice concentrates, and Merlin identifies a perplexing class of food that's made of the wrong food. Follow-up brings updates on how John tries to make his app play nice with macOS weirdness, and there's some important reconsideration regarding what Larry Mullen, Jr. actually said about the location where The King was laid to rest. Speaking of music, with pretty much zero provocation, Merlin launches into a jeremiad about a pet peeve with bad needle drops. What a waste. Finally, your hosts talk about the movie, *Gattaca* (1997). John saw it a long time ago, and Merlin has watched it most of the way through. Which is just to get to the **actual** point: how would your hosts approach teaching the other to _be_ them? John dutifully lays out a bulleted list of items Merlin needs to immediately start changing about himself. (_Recorded on Tuesday, May 16, 2023_)
U2 released Songs of Surrender, a new compilation of some of their best songs stripped down and reworked, on St. Patrick's Day 2023. We knew that was coming but what was a bit of a surprise was on the same day they released a documentary/performance via Disney+. Titled Bono & The Edge - A Sort of Homecoming with David Letterman, it captures the legendary singer & guitarist without their bandmates (Larry Mullen, Jr. was recovering from an injury, Adam Clayton was making a film) in Dublin discussing how some of their biggest and best songs came to be, how they've reworked them and even how they've updated them. David Letterman serves as the narrator/interviewer and is very Dave, not only when speaking with Bono & The Edge but with Dubliners, Irish citizens, and performers. We're generally not in favor of reworking or changing classic tunes but the band have found an amazing balance between staying true to the original while stripping it down to it's essentialness. The boys give Dave and the viewer a better understanding of what it means to be Irish, how Dublin has evolved in the last 50 years and where the band find themselves now. The real treat is the two performances - one at The Rotunda which was once a hospital (where Bono was born) and one at McDaids Pub whis is more than 200 years old. To watch them perform in both these settings with friends like Glen Hansard in an intimate setting is special and that's why we did this episode on this very special show. Steve noticed that U2's Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen didn't come close to looking like rock stars in the early U2 days. Today is National Goof Off Day. Song Stories. We brought back an old bit from the Dave days, but used a listener to play Classic Rock Poker.

Missed some of your favourite bits during the week? Want to catch up on the craic from Dermot and Dave? Well look no further than the Dermot and Dave Best Of podcast, your home for all of the messing with none of the music. Whether you're on a drive, out on a walk, getting stuck into the gaff or garden or looking for a bit of distraction from work, the Dermot and Dave Best of podcast has just some of our favourite moments from the week gone by. It's been a busy week for us, and we've even given away some lap blankets! Dave was horrified when he was tricked into believing that Valentines Day had an even bigger meaning this year, Seán got the nation fighting over their favourite roads and we even heard Cathal's weird Lilt theory. We learnt about the most popular name in music, Dermot explained why he won't be taking over from Larry Mullen on drums and we asked the question…when should you get a pint during a match? Plus all your faves from Dave's Bad Jokes to Say Stuff that Suits The Music and some of the most incredible stories from schooldays of yesteryear.
Following last week's emotional bombshell, Craig Fitzpatrick and Dave Hanratty commit to a difficult future by refusing to share the same physical space – that's right, it's a Zoom-based episode. Unavoidable logistical circumstances or something more sinister? Who can say?In any event, there's a lot to discuss this week. We've got respective cinema outings. We've got the musical element of the Super Bowl. We've got Matty Healy's mission to get cancelled by his own loyal stan-base. And we've got some superb music for our latest Top 5 face-off. It's hard to believe it's been 40 years since U2 released War in early 1983. Though U2 had been gaining ground on their first two albums Boy and October, it was War that set them on the path to superstardom. Buoyed by the big hits New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2 had really found their footing with the help of producer Steve Lillywhite. The Edge was creating amazing melodies and textures through his guitar and piano, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. were honing themselves into a foundational and funky rhythm section while Bono was really finding his voice as a singer and songwriter. Though singing about war, love, inequality and things you don't always hear about on pop/rock records, U2 came across as earnest and steadfast in their beliefs. Thanks to MTV, the boys broke out big in American and sold more than 6 million copies. The 100+ date tour saw them go from playing clubs to playing arenas and some huge festivals. Though U2 would go on to have even bigger selling records, we always look back to this one as the real start of the juggernaut that win the hearts of American and the world. Churchill: The Musical writes itself, but the tunes would be muck. Why is there no Sinatra biopic? And who would play Bono should his story ever reach the big screen? Clearly, Al Pacino is in for Larry Mullen on the drums, but who fronts the thing?

Episode 69 That Great Business Show brings you one hour of insights about the past, present and future of Ireland's music industry, from legendary veteran promoter Pat Egan, the man who brought acts including Queen, Elton John, Bob Marley and of course Billy Connolly to Ireland. These great insights are brought to you, as always, courtesy of our sponsor, De Facto, the world's best shaving oil. www.DeFactoShave.com To start with, ever modest, he says he's not a legend and that the word is overused.Given the sometimes meagre returns (and he's had a couple of disasters that he discusses) he agreed that music promotion could be seen as a form of gambling. He talks about the enormous appetite there is in Ireland for live music events. He discusses the Garth Brooks phenomenon and his concert promoter in Ireland, Peter Aien. That leads into complaining about some of Ireland's best known country & western artists, including Daniel O'Donnell, Margo He says it's very hard to make money from big events now because artists are taking up to 100% of ticket sales. Mid-sized acts, attracting 1,500 people, find it almost impossible to make money. Then he discusses Live Nation, who own/manage or have an involvement in thousands of venues, including all the major Irish venues, plus they own Ticketmaster that sell the tickets for those venues, and they manage 500 major acts who appear in those venues. He is effectively locked out of the bigger venues he implies. A California based law suit, launched this week, makes claims of monopolistic behaviour against the Live Nation.Down, but never out, not being able to access some of his favourite venues like the Olympia or the Gaiety Theatres meant that he has recently struck a deal with University College Dublin to run up to 100 nights of gigs in the magnificent O'Reilly Hall in UCD. His mentor was Oliver Barry, who was also his silent partner. His biggest financial disaster was courtesy of Julio Iglesias whose concert bombed and cost Pat £185,000 of a loss. Ouch.Pat has some interesting views on the future of radio and its importance in promoting new talent.Another woulda/coulda/shoulda moment was when he had the chance to sign U2and he talks about Larry Mullen offering to play for free to support the Stranglers at the Top Hat venue on Dublin's southside. His 'hire in a heartbeat', Garret Delaney and Caroline O'Neill, both who have worked with Pat for years and who helped make it all possible. Hosted on Acast. In 1987 during my first interview with Boy George, he said "tell Bono if he still hasn't found what he is looking for, to look behind the drum kit!" The quote was winged around the world courtesy of MTV News. Six years later, we did our second interview and that subject, naturally enough, was raised at the start. But much as Boy George lusted after Larry we then went on to discuss, for The Joe Jackson Interview slot om The Irish Times, a broad set of issues and subjects in-depth - but always with Boy George's irrepressible sense of humour.
CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Violence, espionage, conspiracy, murder, nuclear bombs. We’re closing out our Series: Impossible with a movie that isn’t the best…but it also isn’t the worst. The story for this movie hinges on a boring MacGuffin and a ton of easter eggs that only people who’ve watched the whole franchise closely (aka US) will appreciate. The characters are all spread too thin, the plot’s watered down to nothing, and even the stunts are a little underwhelming compared to the last installment. AND YET. We get to see more fun and quips from Benji and Ethan, more thoughtful development of Ethan and Claire’s relationship, a new character with ties to the first movie - there’s a lot of character development to chew on. And at the end of the day, it’s still a hell of a popcorn movie. We finish our “Series: Impossible” with Mission: Impossible - Fallout this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Violence, espionage, trauma, gaslighting, panic/anxiety. At some point you just knew we were going to run across a movie in this series for which we had some differences of opinion. Turns out it’s this 2015 entry, which is both fun as hell and also very derivative of another spy we’ve talked about extensively on this show. But Bond aside, there’s a lot of humor, a lot of intrigue, and a lot of character growth for Benji in this installment. Our villain, though, is pretty lackluster, and this movie just…drags…on. And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the absolutely bonkers stunt of holding on to dear life to an actual jet airplane as it takes off from a runway. Because, why not, says Tom Cruise. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Violence, espionage, trauma, gaslighting, panic/anxiety. If M:I III was the forerunner of the Mission: Impossible franchise, then this week’s film proved the franchise was immensely profitable. And it also happens to be a pretty fun movie, with Ethan fulfilling a more senior role as he leads three relatively fresh and raw agents through (checks notes) THE HIGHEST STAKES IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. The threat of nuclear destruction of the entire world hangs in the balance of a not-so-proven team of spies, and those stakes, along with some script development issues, really hinder the believability of this film. Which is frustrating, because this might be the most fun you can have watching a Mission: Impossible movie - the jokes, the banter, the charm are on full display, and it really makes for a great watch. Just - maybe make it a little less complicated, please? We continue our “Series: Impossible” with 2011’s Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Violence, murder, espionage, body horror/suspense, trauma. It took 6 years before the next movie in the M:I franchise got released, but it might be the most successful in the franchise. Which is interesting, considering this movie went through absolute development hell, and passed through several writers and directors before finally landing in the hands of a then unproven film talent - J.J. Abrams. It’s not shocking that J.J. made this transition, and in hindsight, it’s also not shocking that there was no doubt he’d deliver with this movie. Still, this movie is firing on all cylinders, with Tom Cruise’s natural charm and intensity blending together for the best Ethan Hunt yet in this series. And then they brought in the magnificently talented Philip Seymour Hoffman, fresh off his Oscar win for Capote, to be the most stone-cold villain in modern action movies, and he absolutely crushes it. Throw in some very personal stakes for Ethan, lots of wild stunts, and a dash of fun jokes, and you get one hell of a ride. Behind the Song - WDRV-FM Chicago
CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Violence, espionage, gaslighting, espionage, workplace romance. Tom Cruise is truly a fascinating character, with enough energy and zeal for stunts that could power whole cities, and a ruthless loyalty to whatever he sets his mind to - particularly the Church of Scientology. But we’re not here to talk about the Church today. No, we’re here to talk about the movie franchise that has truly created the unique movie star/producer that is Tom Cruise as we know him today. He was already a movie star when our first film was made, but this was the franchise he decided to jump on, and 25 years later, there’s no signs of stopping. And why would he, after this movie? He’s got the bold vision of Brian de Palma, an incredibly talented crew of screenwriters, and a cast of some of the best actors in the business, some of whom die in the first 20 minutes of the film. Cruise is definitely reserved and nervous here, and why wouldn’t he, seeing as he’d foregone his salary to produce the film. But there’s a reason the franchise still exists, and without this movie, we wouldn’t have as much to talk about. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of grief, mental illness, war, slavery, racism, white saviorism, racist propaganda. Here we are, ending our journey through Spielberg’s catalog on a film that’s got to be a sure-fire smash. It’s got an impeccable cast, a great screenwriter, and one of the most compelling people in history around which to build a story. Which is precisely why we’re so angry about this movie. Yes, it’s clearly Oscar bait, and yes, any story about Abraham Lincoln is going to read very, very hollow given the growing movement for racial justice in our country. But it’s the self-indulgent, sentimental and somber framing of a story that refuses to find any real humanity in its protagonist that really gets our goat here. We know Steven’s got a hell of an ego, but it’s never more on display than watching this way too self-important film. For a movie about one of the most interesting human case studies in our nation, there’s very little that we can learn about or empathize with the 16th President. He’s just a portrait in a room, and this is just a WIkipedia entry of a movie. We’re wrapping up with Spielberg’s flat biography of Lincoln on Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! 4 Guys From the Future-frontmand Bjarke Porsmose startede sin musikalske karriere tidligere end de fleste. Harrison requested that Jon try to sell him on U2, so Jon chose their third album, 1983's War (huh!) and set to work. We talk about the band's sense of urgency in their early recordings, Bono's strict antiwar and antiviolence stance, and what it meant in the rock world of the early 80s. Did it work? Listen to find out! We also discuss... Why Jon picked War (huh!) over other U2 albums, even ones he might like better The Edge's guitar rig (notably his delay pedal), and how public perception of it has changed over the years Steve Lillywhite's contributions as producer How Larry Mullen Jr.'s drums are the "secret weapon" of this album How The Edge's guitar is the not-so-secret weapon of the album How Bono took a love song to his wife and turned it into a Soviet WWII ballad The guest musicians from Kid Creole's backing band on "Red Light" and "Surrender" Bono's moral cosmology on "Surrender" How the evocative imagery directly from the Bible used in "'40'" upstages the rest of the album Our key tracks and the PLAY DISC Request Lottery Come join us for an hour of thoughtful and good-humored commentary, and we'll catch you on the B-side! Yungblud, Ariana Grande, U2, Larry Mullen, Vans for bands
The 1980's produced some of the most iconic artists and groups of any generation. From Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince to R.E.M. The Police, and Bruce Springsteen there was something in these artist's styles, brand, and message that triggered our emotions and fealty. U2 is one such group that has maintained the loyalty of millions of people worldwide through their sincerity, musicianship, and political activism. Let's face it; anyone that has seen them in concert or listened to their live recordings is easily swept up by the anthemic reinterpretations of their studio recordings. It's hard not to feel an affiliation with the group and their message after deep listening. During the 90's, Bono and band members the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen began to experiment with the burgeoning techno and trance scene in their music. Sometimes with great fanfare, while other times falling flat. Regardless, these reinterpretations standout on their own with Paul Oakenfold (and to a lesser extent William Orbit) introducing elements into their music that allowed U2 to reach a wider audience on the dancefloor. To this day, U2 has continued their anthemic glory and fully embraced their music and message to be translated for the world's dancefloors with continued success. This legacy edition (or tribute) to their achievements in dance music is strictly focused on that area of this group's genius. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my tribute to one of rock's greatest and most influential bands as reinterpreted by other electronic artists, U2. I want to thank everybody that has privately written to me about my current mental health. I assure I am fine (sort of). For me, life is a struggle as I am certain it is for many of you. I am trying to refocus my efforts towards positive outcomes and plan on sticking it out at least through the end of the year. With me, you never know. Thanks again! -K Album: U2 | Legacy Genre: Trance, House Music Year: 2018 Total Time: 02:51:43 Love Is Bigger Than Anything In It's Way (Intro Version feat. As every hard-rock-and-horror-lovin’ soul knows, there’s a void in the musical fabric that can only be filled by a new Alice Cooper album. Whether the results are a stud or a dud, there’s a shiver of anticipation that runs spider-like down our spines when fresh tunes are spun out from Alice’s web, as we hope to be snagged and drawn up into that dark lair of rage, rancor and riffs that is the mind of Alice Cooper. So it was with the arrival of PARANORMAL in the summer of 2017, coming as it did on the heels of an Alice tour that saw him reunite for a couple of brief, barnstorming sets in Nashville, Tennessee with his cronies from the great Alice Cooper Band. This reunion found its way into the studio to record some tracks, and in addition to the ACB we also have the return of past heroes/enablers/contributors of the Alice legend, producer Bob Ezrin and guitarist Steve Hunter, plus distinctive work from U2 drummer Larry Mullen and the inimitable Billy Gibbons. Be that as it may, on the Coopercast we’ve all seen how having a lot of big-name cooks doesn’t always make for a sumptuous kitchen…the prime ingredient is the song. Did Alice deliver choice cuts for this, his 27th studio album? Well, give your Coopercasters –Bobby Hazzard, the lovely Ms. Hazzard, The Naschycast’s Troy Guinn, and special guest Dr. Gangrene – a listen and we’ll break it all down for you, track-by-track, smack-by-smack, and let you know who emerges triumphant: Alice Cooper or Father Time.
