Staying active during pregnancy isn't just about fitness. It's so much more than that. It's about feeling strong, prepared, and connected to your changing body. But with so much conflicting advice on what's safe and effective, many expecting moms aren't sure where to start. That's why in this episode of Chick Chat, we sit down with Gina Conley, the founder of MamasteFit.com, to break down the powerful benefits of prenatal fitness. From boosting overall health and reducing pregnancy discomforts to preparing the body for labor and postpartum recovery, Gina shares expert insights on how movement can empower moms-to-be. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness journey, this episode will give you practical tips to feel your best throughout pregnancy and beyond. Who is Gina Conley? Gina Conley holds an MS in Exercise Science and is the Founder & CEO of MamasteFit, an industry-leading perinatal fitness provider with a training facility located in Aberdeen, North Carolina. Aside from her work as a personal trainer specializing in perinatal fitness, Gina is a seasoned birth doula who has supported nearly 200 births in North Carolina. Gina is a mom of four and a military spouse. She is also a 7-year Army Veteran who served a combat tour to Afghanistan in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Freedom Sentinel. What Did We Discuss? Gina and I discussed all about prenatal fitness including common myths about exercise during pregnancy and what the facts really are. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: Explain to us why exercise is so important during pregnancy. What are some common myths about prenatal exercise?  Are there any risks associated with exercising during pregnancy?  How can exercise during pregnancy benefit moms-to-be during labor and birth? Are there certain exercises you specifically recommend women do to prepare for childbirth?  Do you have any practical tips for moms-to-be on how to integrate fitness into their daily routine without overwhelming themselves? We've all heard about Kegels, but I feel like that isn't always the best way to prepare your pelvic floor for birth. What are your thoughts, and what do you believe women can do during their pregnancies to prepare their pelvic floor for labor and birth? Pregnancy is a time of incredible change, and staying active can be one of the most powerful ways to support both your body and mind through pregnancy and prepare yourself for a smoother postpartum. As Gina reminded us, prenatal fitness isn't about pushing limits—it's about moving with intention, preparing for labor, and embracing strength in all forms. We hope this episode leaves you feeling inspired to find movement that works for you, whether it's strength training, yoga, or simply taking more mindful walks. If you loved this conversation, be sure to share it with another mama-to-be, and don't forget to subscribe to Chick Chat for more expert advice on pregnancy, birth, and motherhood! In the next episode of our new Academic Arsenal series – focused on NPS students' defense-relevant research – host Eric Czaja speaks with two U.S. Air Force senior pilots in the defense analysis program whose examination of amphibious aircraft could offer an innovative solution to logistics challenges in the Indo-Pacific. Trident Room Podcast host U.S. Army Maj. Eric Czaja has a conversation with NPS Department of Defense Analysis students U.S. Air Force Maj. Bobby Strain and U.S. Air Force Maj. Tim Marti. This episode was recorded on August 31, 2024. Maj. Bobby Strain is a U.S. Air Force senior pilot with more than 2,450 flying hours in the C-5M and KC-135R/T. A 2011 ROTC graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, he has flown missions worldwide, including combat missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Resolute Support, Inherent Resolve, and Freedom's Sentinel. Maj. Tim Marti is also a U.S. Air Force senior pilot with more than 2,000 hours flying the U-28 and other various AFSOC aircraft, including combat missions in Operation Inherent Resolve. Together, Strain and Marti have authored a joint thesis entitled “Airpower Beyond the Runway: Amphibious Aircraft to Enhance Agility in INDOPACOM.” Their thesis explores how seaplanes, specifically amphibious aircraft, can support the U.S. Joint Force while also creating challenges for adversaries in the Indo-Pacific. The study explores the limitations of current assets and the advantages of utilizing seaplanes in two fictional scenarios. Utilizing a mixed methods qualitative/quantitative approach to compare seaplanes against various platforms – including aircraft, ships, boats, and submarines – the study showcases the seaplane's unique advantages due to its speed, range, and access to remote locations. The study concludes with a series of recommendations for the DOD to inform decision-makers of the potential for investment in amphibious aircraft, and suggests courses of action to validate the requirement. ----------------- The Trident Room Podcast is brought to you by the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association and the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation. www.npsfoundation.org For comments, suggestions, and critiques, please email us at TridentRoomPodcastHost@nps.edu, and find us online at nps.edu/tridentroompodcast. Hey everybody, tonight I'm talking to Author and Podcaster Jeff Clark Jeff Clark is an author, and decorated leader having spent over 12 years on active duty in the Air Force and has continued his service with the military as a civilian ever since. His nearly 20-year career has seen him lead teams in logistics, operations, readiness & plans, business, and special programs for the US Air Force and US Space Force. He's worked with the US Army, US Navy, and US Space Force for joint ventures, including the standup of Space Operations Command, and multiple engagements for Operations Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and US Army NORTHCOM. In his debut book, Hear These Truths, Clark outlines the crucial steps readers should take to design their own philosophy, or what he calls their algorithm, to rule the workplace and understand their leadership mission, vision, and goals. "Approaching leadership without a strategy will bury you and slow your progress," said Clark, a coach, and mentor with certifications in Lean Six Sigma, technical training, and executive leadership. "The way an algorithm - a rule set for success - guides the content of a website, your school of thought on leading must do the same. It's the 'call to action.'" Clark draws upon his experiences as an entrepreneur, as a retired Air Force logistician serving during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and as a government civil service employee to lay out a clear plan for readers to win in the workplace. This plan covers: defining leadership; distinguishing between power and purpose; being a servant leader; making smart decisions with confidence; becoming empowered and empowering others; effectively communicating and listening; and, accountability and its importance for leaders and teams. In addition to his writing Jeff hosts the Course of Action podcast where he discusses military and spy thrillers and veteran issues. Jeff lives in Oklahoma with his wife and three children, his oldest currently serving on active duty in the Air Force. As a leader, teacher, and coach, he designs character education programs based on Neo-Aristotelian Virtue Ethics to facilitate a flourishing life for students, faculty, and staff. As a retired Army officer with over 21 years of military experience, Dr. Parsons spent roughly half of his military career in Intelligence and the other half in academia serving as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Ethics.LTC Tom Dull commissioned into the US Infantry in 2005 and has served at Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Bragg, NC and Fort Riley, KS. LTC Dull's military education is expansive and includes the United States Army Officer Candidate School, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Airborne Course, Ranger School, Air Assault Course, and the United States Naval War College. In this episode of the West Point Association of Graduates ‘Character Cut,' LTC Dull talks about his background as a student of virtue ethics, responding to mission command and discipline initiatives, how the United States Military's values vary from other nations', and the importance of character education for young leaders in the academy. Dr. Parsons and LTC Dull also talk about Parsons' use of practical wisdom during combat in Iraq.-----------"There's gonna be times where maybe, perhaps, some of these officers, soldiers are kind of alone and generally unafraid, but they're solving problems at the tactical level. And, some of those will be ones where their character will come into question. And so we really want them to kind of come through the other side with their character in tact, right? We want them as they represent not only themselves, the organization they're part of, but the American military that they fought with character, they fought with honor. And they've come back with it. And I think practicing early on, especially here, what we see at the military academy, what we could possibly see in some other initial entry training units, like I think would be such a phenomenal kind of experience." - LTC Tom Dull-----------Episode Timestamps(01:09) LTC Dull's background as a student of virtue ethics(05:32) How practical wisdom influences soldiers(09:34) Virtue ethics in military situations(13:58) Dr. Parsons on employing practical wisdom in Iraq(16:50) Mission command and discipline initiative(18:27) LTC Dull's whiteboard explained(21:02) LTC Dull on Army doctrine(24:06) The importance of character education for young leaders in the academy-----------LinksDr. Scott Parsons' LinkedInLTC Tom Dull's LinkedInWest Point Association of GraduatesOn Point Podcast

Rear Admiral Kerry Metz (USN, Ret.) started his career as a Navy SEAL, and eventually served as the first commander of Special Operations Command North. In this discussion, Kerry talked about career success, career setbacks, and how “you can’t be a shiny penny without a few wire brushings!” Kerry shares his 5 H’s when it comes to leadership: honor, honesty, humility, humor, and happiness. He discusses the differences and similarities between the military, sports teams, business, and the shared commonality regarding leadership. Listen in to gain insights from a modern-day, intellectual warrior. Key Takeaways [3:01] Kerry progressed as a SEAL from the tactical area, through operational roles, and then to the strategic level as an admiral. The Special Forces, SEALs, and Rangers are tests for the human body and mind to do 10 times more than they think they can.  [5:48] A good team requires a common purpose or mission. Next, comes a shared experience or sacrifice. Everyone contributes to the best of their ability. These are the ingredients for a high-performing team. [7:33] Kerry talks about sacrifice in a startup. Employees sacrifice high salary for shares. Founders are often on the road more than most executives, for a later payoff. Sacrificing now gives you future options. [9:25] Kerry discusses how Naval officers achieve rank. Evaluations are not only for what they have done, but also their potential. Leadership is developing the leaders behind you. If something happens to you, the one behind you has to step up and take your place. [13:29] Kerry talks about his advancement. He was passed over for Lieutenant Commander once, but not the second time. When he was up for Commander, it also took two times. But he made One Star Admiral before his contemporaries. Kerry follows five ‘H’s: Honor, Honesty, Humility, Humor, and Happiness.  [21:13] Military groups fight in a mission to win or lose; sports teams play a game to win; but business can be a long slog. He cites Admiral Jim Stavridis, who said to be open, honest, and collegial, and Admiral Michael Mullen, who said to listen, learn, and lead. Leaders who apply these principles will lead well. [25:49] Competition among peers is healthy if it is balanced with cooperation. Leaders should lead people the way they need to be led. Some need a push, some need a pat on the back. Tell the contributors how they are doing, and what they need to do to be on the mark. [29:44] In 1989, Kerry tells a hard leadership lesson he learned as the Team Commander of SEAL Team One when they deployed to the Philippines.  [37:27] Put people in the right spot for them, nurture them, and empower them, and they will surpass your expectations and surprise you with their achievements.  [41:42] No one starts at the top. He would like to help others have a smoother ride, go further, and go faster. The world needs leaders to handle complexity.   LinkedIn: Kerry M. You are capable of it. Don’t let someone else determine where you’re going. You determine where you’re going. Stay on that path. You’re going to get through that obstacle. You’ve just got to keep trying. A high-performing team has a common purpose, a shared sacrifice, and everyone contributing to their best ability. “A good leader can get the most of his personnel even that aren’t going all the way to the top.” The bottom line is sustained superior performance.
