Kid Congo Powers is an iconic punk guitarist, wildly inventive solo artist, author, and storyteller. His resume includes legendary runs playing guitar in Gun Club, the Cramps and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He’s also been doing his own thing for decades, most notably with Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. He’s a prolific recording artist whose discography is super deep, varied, innovative, fun, and screaming for repeat visits. I think rock and roll has become harder to define as the years have advanced, but whatever that definition is, he fits it. Before he played at Beat Kitchen, Kid jumped in the car and talked about: *His prolific output. I mean, music just pours out of him. *The forthcoming release with Naim Amor, “Tuscon Safari” (check out the video for “Surf Sirens,” mentioned in the interview. *Where the next generation of “Kid Congos” is coming from. *Music fandom. *Kid’s history with, and affection for, the Cramps. *The second life of “Goo Goo Muck.” *The horror tip he got from Siouxsie Sioux. *The key to building a band “brand” - bringing fans along into your world. *His must-read memoir, Some New Kind Of Kick. Kid Congo is a true one-of-a-kind, and an easy conversationalist. I left the interview wanting more, and I suspect you’ll feel the same way. Thank you for listening/watching. Budgie (born Peter Edward Clarke) is an English drummer recognized for his work with Siouxsie and the Banshees (1979–1996) and the percussion-driven project The Creatures (1981–2004). He lost his mother at age 12, and that early loss becomes a central theme in The Absence: Memoirs of a Banshee Drummer, where he also writes candidly about his marriage with Siouxsie Sioux, struggles with alcohol, and the power dynamics in both his personal and musical life. His drumming is praised for being offbeat, tom-tom-intensive, and for bringing melodic and rhythmic invention rather than just keeping time.

Siouxsie Sioux (1957-present) is an English musician and cultural icon who helped shape the punk and gothic rock movements with her band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Known for her commanding stage presence, fierce makeup and fashion, and defiant lyrics, she broke boundaries for women in music. They are aesthetic pioneers, norm-benders, and often the only woman in their field. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we’ll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. In this episode of Danny Hurst´s podcast he once again speaks to someone who grew up in London. Today, it is the turn of Adam and the Ants guitarist, songwriter and record producer Marco Pirroni, who has appeared alongside some of the most well-known names in music, including not only Adam Ant, but also Sinéad O'Connor, Siouxsie Sioux, Sid Vicious, Shakespeare's Sister and many others. He shares some memories of growing up just off the Caledonian Road, Camden when it wasn't fashionable, Soho and the West End; a life that compared starkly with living in America. Naturally, he also shares some great insights and stories about London´s music scene, especially in the 70's, 80s and 90s, punk and New Wave, Vivienne and Malcolm's shop on the Kings Road, the story behind Prince Charming and whether the Ants are ever likely to tour again. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Until the late 80s, virtually every shop in London closed early. Each area of London had its own very distinctive character, usually heavily influenced by which immigrant groups lived there. Malcolm McClaren´s punk clothes shop originally sold Teddy Boy clothing designed by his then girlfriend, Vivienne Westwood. Malcolm liked to be mischievous, sometimes he involved Marco. Marco shares a couple of those stories. The Roxy launched some great bands including Generation X and The Clash. BEST MOMENTS “In the early 80s, it (London) was still pretty dead… nothing was ever open.” “All their fans were trying to gravitate to something else. Suddenly, this 50s clothes things was happening on the King's Road.” “My mum and dad ran a restaurant. Everyone in it was Italian. Anyone who ever came around was Italian.” “I was born in London. I am very happy to die in London, when the time comes.” “Punk sort of influenced everything so much so that everyone forgets that it was that that did it.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Pirroni https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-pirroni-433373b4 Convent - https://dvrbs.camdenhistory.com/camden-religion/camdennj-church-perpetualrosaryconvent.htm Pet shop - https://nickygrace.co.uk/2013/01/10/the-old-pet-shop-in-camden-town Malcolm McClaren´s punk clothes shop - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_(boutique) HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. What's up, dudes? It's a Siouxsie and the Banshees Christmas, as Rikki Meece from the Sleigh Bells and Mistletoe Podcast and I break down two songs from goth rock band! Yep, it's “Israel” v ”Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” in the Thunderdome! We talk the band's catalogue, their Christmas music, their look and sound, and definitely their lyrics! In other words, we get into it all! Two songs enter, one song leaves!"Israel" was released as a stand-alone single in between the albums Kaleidoscope (1980) and Juju (1981) on November 28, 1980 by record label Polydor. While touring in Europe in autumn 1980, the band wanted to write a Christmas song to be released on time for December of that year. They composed it on the road, which was quite unusual for them. It was the first time that Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin composed a single with guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie. The song was co-produced by Nigel Gray: it prominently featured a 30 singer Welsh choir on backing vocals. It soon became a classic of their repertoire and was regularly performed during encores at each of their tours.Subsequently, “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” was released as B-side to “Melt” on November 26, 1982. The tune for this carol can be found in R. Grosjean's Airs des noêl lorrain (1862), where it is called 'Ancien air de chasse', and it is indeed the case that an old Normandy hunting tune 'Tête bizarde', though in 6/8, is melodically very similar. The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols editors postulated that the tune is an 18th century composition in a rustic style. The text of this carol was first published in Dom G. Legeay's Noêls anciens (1875-6). Most Common translation is from Edward Bliss Reed from 1930.Synths? Check. ‘80s Goth videos? Yup. 19th century carol with a quasi-canon? Definitely! So put on your makeup, grab your mic, and sing along with this post-punk goth episode! This week on LIFERS we're getting schooled on goth, punk, the ‘80s club scene, Diamanda Galas — shit, we're getting schooled on EVERYTHING! We must be talking to Chicago legend DJ Scary Lady Sarah. Sarah just celebrated her 36th year as a professional DJ and producer of the longest running goth event in North America: NOCTURNA. Take that, whippersnappers! On this episode we talk about Chicago hardcore shows, NEO, sushi with Siouxsie Sioux, The Damned, Joe Shanahan and the Metro, putting Peter Murphy in a deprivation tank, Pandemic Goths, The Bellwether Syndicate, being the Elizabeth Taylor of goth, and Scott gets gonged.
Siouxsie and the Banshees var með helstu og áhrifaríkustu síðpönksveitum og söngkonan Siouxsie Sioux var - og er - gríðarlegt íkon. Tónlistarlega toppaði sveitin á Juju (1981) og um hana og margt fleira mun BP-tríóið ræða í þætti vikunnar.
WE'VE GOT BATS IN OUR BELFRY!!!!! Grey would be the colour if we only had a way to colour-coat episodes. It's Goth Month here on Pod Like a Hole, so get out your choker, get your eyeliner, and pick a safeword , we are covering Siouxsie and the Banshees and it is getting DARK. It is Intern Eric's final pick of the season, and does he go out with a bang or a whimper? You be the judge. It's the 1980 record that brought Siouxsie to a new level of rock. Listen as your boys pick apart the ground breaking licks from John McGeouch, basslines from Steve Severin, and poundings from Budgie. And vamping up front, is the true queen of the dungeon, Siouxsie Sioux. Your hosts go into the history of the band, discuss at what point post-punk became goth, and how inspirational this band ended up being. Then its a track by track review of Juju. It's a whole episode of pain and pleasure. The bitter and the sweet. Enjoy. In A Kiss Across the Ocean: Transatlantic Intimacies of British Post-Punk and US Latinidad (Duke UP, 2022), Richard T. Rodríguez examines the relationship between British post-punk musicians and their Latinx audiences in the United States since the 1980s. Melding memoir with cultural criticism, Rodríguez spotlights a host of influential bands and performers including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Adam Ant, Bauhaus, Soft Cell, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Pet Shop Boys. He recounts these bands' importance for him and other Latinx kids and discusses their frequent identification with these bands' glamorous performance of difference. Whether it was Siouxsie Sioux drawing inspiration from Latinx contemporaries and cultural practices or how Soft Cell singer Marc Almond's lyrics were attuned to the vibrancy of queer Latinidad, Rodríguez shows how Latinx culture helped shape British post-punk. He traces the fandom networks that link these groups across space and time to illuminate how popular music establishes and facilitates intimate relations across the Atlantic. In so doing, he demonstrates how the music and styles that have come to define the 1980s hold significant sway over younger generations equally enthused by their matchlessly pleasurable and political reverberations. Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Her research focuses on feminism, activism, and literacy practices in youth culture, specifically through zines and music. Learn more about your ad choices. Percussion Discussion - Episode 129 - Rob BrianJoining me today is English drummer Rob BrianRob has carved out an incredible career for himself so far, having wonderful names on his CV such as Miles Kane, Siouxsie Sioux, Peter Gabriel, Hugh Cornwell, Simple Minds, Clara Ponty, Modern English and many more.Join Rob and myself for a fascinating and free flowing chat about his amazing career, we talk about Robs obvious passion for education, he tells us how important it is to pass on and share information and that how the drumming community thankfully thrives on doing this.Rob and I also talk in-depth about his gig with Siouxsie Sioux, a gig he has held since 2006, and the challenge of playing some of the unique and tricky parts of the original Banshees drummer and former guest on this podcast Budgie. We had to chat about Rob's involvement in the upcoming tour with Gary Astridge in February 2024 - The Legendary Drums and Drumming of a Starr, a tribute to the Genius of Ringo Starr, Gary Astridge (Ringo's curator of all the Beatles era drum kits, historian and friend of Ringo) will be hosting the evening featuring some incredible Ringo facts, storied and a multimedia presentation along with Rob demonstrating some of Ringos grooves and rather unique traits behind a drum kit! Thanks to Rob for a totally fascinating chat - checkout his website www.robertbrian.co.uk
For episode two Robert Dean, formerly of the groundbreaking band "Japan," returns to the podcast. As a guitarist and songwriter, Robert played a pivotal role in shaping the band's innovative sound during the new wave and post-punk era. Speaking of punk, next is drummer Robert Brian, probably best known for his work with British punk artist Siouxsie Sioux. Additionally, he has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, Andy Partridge, and Herbie Flowers, among others. We were also expecting two additional guests, Chris Payne and Andy Coughlan (both formerly of the Gary Numan band) but unfortunately, they were unable to join us this time. However, in this engaging conversation, you'll discover anecdotes about live performances and the mishaps that can occur on stage. My guests share a mutual love of the Beatles, and I ask Robert Dean if he'll allow me to delve into his Thunderbirds toy collection. Join us for all this and more on the "Always, Never" podcast.
Sprints is a garage-punk band from Dublin where they're known for take-no-prisoners live shows and claim among their influences the likes of early Pixies, Bahaus, Siouxsie Sioux, King Gizzard, Savages and LCD Soundsystem. Their first full-length album is called Letter To Self, and amidst the crashing, searing, seething guitars, there is “an exploration of pain, passion and perseverance”, (dedication for the album), and some inward-looking lyrics. Sprints throws down a mix of deadpan delivery and explosive emotion, playing new songs in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Adore Adore Adore 2. Up and Comer 3. Literary Mind
YUH 153 is "Siouxsie and the Banshees The Early Years" by Laurence Hedges! Our guest's first book is a fresh take on the early years of one of our favorite bands. From middle class Chislehurst Kent, young Susan Ballion would take the train into London to follow bands like the Slits and the Sex Pistols, never expecting her own career to far exceed the accomplishments of her mentors. Some 37 years later, the ill-described "Ice Queen" continues her wildly successful return to the stage, a tour Laurence caught twice and recounts with us... and you. Our third episode on the inimitable Siouxsie Sioux, we might be good until Laurence publishes his next volume on the band in June of next year. Wayne Byrne is an acclaimed author and film historian from Ireland. He started his career working for local County Kildare newspapers before being invited to write for the iconic Irish pop culture bible Hot Press Magazine as a music, book, and restaurant critic. His debut book, The Cinema of Tom DiCillo: Include Me Out, was released in 2018. Wayne followed it with well-received works on subjects like Burt Reynolds, cinematographer Nick McLean, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and legendary Hollywood filmmaker Walter Hill. I've read both Welcome to Elm Street and Walter Hill: The Cinema of a Hollywood Maverick and can tell you that they're both deeply researched, entertainingly detailed looks at how influential filmmakers create the dreams the world loves to watch. I highly recommend Wayne's work to you. Look for the release of Wayne's latest book, Hired Guns: Portraits of Women in Alternative Music, co-written with his best friend, acclaimed musician Amanda Kramer, who's been the keyboardist/vocalist of The Psychedelic Furs, 10,000 Maniacs, Siouxsie Sioux, The Golden Palominos, and Information Society. He's also busy writing three upcoming books, including another collaboration with Amanda Kramer, which is a study of the evolution of film soundtracks in the revolutionary New Hollywood era. Wayne's also working with cinematographer Roy Wagner on a biography documenting Wagner's acclaimed career, called Beyond the Shadows, as well as a critical/cultural overview of the Halloween movies entitled, The Ongoing Halloween Franchise: 13 Films and Counting.

Once upon a time there was a collection of London ne'er do wells called "The Bromley Contingent". Among this collection of dropouts and punks were the likes of Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Severin and Billy Idol. They took their cues from a small band of talentless arnarchists known to the Queen as unruly peasants. When Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious and Steve Jones confronted Her Majesty's rules with a bit of harsh reality on the River Thames during her annual jubilee, their Sex Pistol banner started unfurling across the world. Today's episode is our first Aaron's Audio Edibles, and it is about the second album of Pistol disciple Siouxsie and her platonic Banshees, an album that combines themes of war with social commentary in a confrontational treatise that this Siouxie fan had largely neglected in the past. Joining us is one of Siouxsie's biggest fans, Herman De Tollenaere. As editor of the fanzine PIN, Herman twice got to interview Siouxsie during her visits to the Netherlands right around the time "Join Hands" was unleashed on the world. With his own band Cheap 'N Nasty, which he willfully admits could not have happened without the Queen of Goth's influence, Herman knows the subject of this program better than most. He helps us review one of the most important early albums in the history of punk rock, Join Hands by Siouxsie and the Banshees! #YeahUhHuh #SiouxsieSioux #SiouxsieAndThe Banshees #Podcast #PunkRock #TheCure #SexPistols #MalcolmMcLaren #JoinHands Join Hands Track list Poppy Day Regal Zone Placebo Effect Icon Lyrics Premature Burial Playground Twist Mother/Oh Mein Papa The Lord's Prayer YUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3 https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobriety-Blues-David-Mojo3/dp/B091N8BJNB Join Hands by Siouxsie and the Banshees on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/4FnKGH6piIJse7MUiYtQfj?si=tJXCXncmRKmboOfSo8B4PA Herman's Interview with Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1981 for PIN Magazine https://www.bacteria.nl/pin-4-english-edition/ Herman's Punktuation Magazine Review of Siouxsie's 2023 show in the Netherlands https://www.punktuationmag.com/gig-review-siouxsie-sioux-triumphs-in-amsterdam/ Official Website for Cheap N Nasty (Herman's band) https://cheapnnastyband410118468.wordpress.com Rock snd Roll Heaven on Facebook (Thea is the admin): https://www.facebook.com/RockandrollLT?mibextid=LQQJ4d Yeah Uh Huh Social Stuff: Yeah Uh Huh on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Facebook https://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Twitter https://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aa Yeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611 Yeah Uh Huh Website: https://www.podpage.com/yeah-uh-huh/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yeah-uh-huh/message

There aren't many surviving old school punk musicians. Many of them have gone on to that great gig in the sky, but those that have survived the last 45 years are the true legacy artists of a long gone generation. Mention Johnny Rotten, Siouxsie Sioux, Nina Hagen, or Henry Rollins and you know they changed the musical landscape forever, and their influence is far reaching.Of all the surviving punks, John Robb is a truly influential human, known not only as a founding member of the legendary Membranes, but as a writer, a commentator, a pundit, and an industry insider for over 30 years. Our conversation today was everything I had hoped it'd be. As you can imagine, this is a man with too many stories, but we got to a few, and most importantly took the opportunity to talk about his AMAZING new book, "The Art of Darkness, the History of Goth."So, to quote Marty DiBergi from Spinal Tap, "enough of my yakkin'.... let's boogie." On episode 18 of "Hot Takes" season 2, we brought on some vaporwave up-and-comers to join us on the show: Sonavision Deluxe and Komit! Sona and Komit, the wizards behind the breakout independent electronic release "Creation", took over "Hot Takes" with the bois for a couple of hours' worth of production techniques, secret inspirational sauce, and ranting and raving about good and bad art alike with the live audience in chat. Having received critical acclaim due to their recent release and work with acts like Windows96, we felt it necessary to pick Sona and Komit's brains, owing to the quality of their sometimes psychedelic, always maximalist digital synthwork. In this latest episode, we get to rant and rave about the redeeming qualities of such musical acts as Oneohtrix Point Never, Rush, Siouxsie Sioux, Van Halen, Windows96, and more. We get to deep dive into Sona and Komit's favorite video game OSTs, with Sona and Shiro sharing a moment over the "Octopath Traveler" soundtrack. Don't miss the episode simply for Shiro's rant about album lengths and Skelly's slow ascent into dreamland towards the end of this episode of "Hot Takes" It's a hot'n! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

A lot of folks are asking to hear some original Jonesy's Jukebox shows from Indie 103.1 days, and here is a special one for you. This is the day Siouxsie Sioux and Budgie (from the Banshees) came in for the first part of the show, and overlapped with The New York Dolls in the second part! It happened on January 10, 2004, at a time when both artists were passing through town on tours. You know they covered some juicy tidbits from the early days. Enjoy this previously unreleased episode capturing the convergence of these dynamic performers: Siouxsie Sioux, Budgie, David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, and of course Steve Jones.
