One Crimson Spring Changed History. At Jallianwala Bagh With Navtej Sarna

The Literary City

No matter how many times you have heard it, the story of Jallianwala Bagh is terrifying. But when most of us first heard the story of the massacre, we weren't mature enough to absorb the significance of what we were reading. As schoolboys we were only allowed a casual and dinky relationship with our history text books. Jallianwala Bagh could pass as another tale of woe in chapter after chapter of bloody wars. And it wasn't until we were older and for many—let's tell the truth here—watching the movie Gandhi—did the horror of it all come home.My guest today is Navtej Sarna, author of Crimson Spring—in essence a book about the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh, but one that is more history than novel. It is a literary work that describes a historical tragedy through the emotions of its protagonists.  While reading his book, it struck me that we don't preserve and portray the horrors of history in any tangible form, say, like the holocaust museums; Auschwitz and other locations. And then it occurred to me that the broad dissemination of Indian history is principally among school children. And that includes mythology. Even ones that include mature themes, such as the Mahabharata. No wonder then that the authors who have given us history—whether as history or as novels of historical fiction—have become bestsellers. Think William Dalrymple with over a million Twitter followers, Ram Guha, Chitra Divakaruni, Navtej Sarna, and so many others. There is a hunger for history. And no better time than the 75th year of Indian independence to tell these tales.Crimson Spring is but another in an impressive list of books authored by Sarna. And among them the most compelling for me is his book on his literary travels: Second Thoughts subtitled, On Books, Authors and The Writerly Life.Through trying to find the origins and the final resting places of the great writers, Sarna introduces us to that wonderful world. And packages the most important works of literature in an easily digestible form.He is a diplomat—former Ambassador to the United States, Israel and former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. And he joins us today from his home in New Delhi.I am privileged to welcome Navtej Sarna to The Literary City.ABOUT NAVTEJ SARNANavtej Sarna was India's Ambassador to the United States, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and Ambassador to Israel. He has also served as Secretary to the Government of India and as the Foreign Office Spokesperson. His earlier diplomatic assignments were in Moscow, Warsaw, Thimphu, Tehran, Geneva, and Washington DC. His literary work includes the novels The Exile and We Weren't Lovers Like That, the short story collection Winter Evenings, non-fiction works The Book of Nanak, Second Thoughts, and Indians at Herod's Gate, as well as two translations, Zafarnama and Savage Harvest. He is a prolific columnist and commentator on foreign policy and literary matters, contributing regularly to media platforms in India and abroad. Most patriotic movies are not made about freedom fighters as people, but freedom fighters as icons – generalizing them and condensing the complexities of their reasons and characters into neat marketable products for a multiplex audience. Sardar Udham Singh is a masterpiece that presents no such broad strokes.Watch the impeccable #VickyKausal ace this role. Special mention for #AmolParashar as Bhagat Singh. It's a classic.Shriya watched Lawyer Vishvanath. Viswanath is a lawyer who has a loving family comprising his wife Kamala and his loving 8-year-old daughter Akshara. He is a man of values and lives with principles. Viswanath spends considerable time with his family to ensure he gives proper love and affection. On his daughter's birthday, he takes his family for an evening outing but on the way back a tragedy strikes Viswanath and his family.  Watch this remake on Prime. Finally, we review @sonyliv's #Tabbar.Ajitpal Singh's Tabbar is a lesson on celluloid of how to impact your audiences with pure emotion.Created and written by Harman Wadala, and co-written by Sandeep Jain, Tabbar deploys very credible theatre art to bring his characters to life.  The logical, calculative Omkar (Pavan Raj Malhotra) and the emotional mother Sargun (Supriya Pathak Kapur), parents to Teji (Sahil Mehta), and the civil services aspirant Happy (Gagan Arora) are caught in a sudden situation inadvertently where they get embroiled in the killing of the drug peddling brother of a local businessman-politician (Ranvir Shorey) in their home. 13 April 1919 — the unspeakable horrors at Jallianwala Bagh on that day still resonates with those who visit the walled city of Amritsar and the site. On that horrific day, thousands of innocent civilians, without warning, were gunned down at the orders of Brigadier-General Dwyer, where a platoon of soldiers surrounded the bagh and fired on those who were peacefully protesting. Over the past 100 years, many books, TV shows, and movies have tried to capture the scale of the tragedy that took place. And the most recent attempt that has been lauded by critics and audience reviews is the new movie Sardar Udham, which captures the unrelenting journey of freedom fighter Udham Singh to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Sardar Udham, navigates the life of Udham Singh from his time in prison in India to his journey to London, and eventually his motives to assassinate Sir Michael O'Dwyer. The film has received rave reviews for actor Vicky Kaushal's performance as Udham Singh and also for, according to one movie review, separating nationalism from jingoism. This of course goes without saying that this episode contains a few spoilers for the movie. Tune in! A former governor of Punjab, Sir Michael O'Dwyer, was killed by an Indian immigrant in London in 1940. The assassin, Udham Singh, said he was avenging the deaths of hundreds of civilians who had been fired on by colonial troops in Amritsar in India in April 1919. When he was put on trial at the Old Bailey, he gave a defiant speech against colonial rule. Sajid Iqbal has been speaking to Avtar Singh Jouhal who campaigned to have Udham Singh's courtroom speech made public. On April 13, 1919, a column of British troops marched into the , a public garden in Amritsar, a city in Punjab, where more than 15,000 Indians had gathered for a peaceful protest against the increasingly restrictive policies of the British government, and in particular the deportation of two followers of Gandhi. At the orders of Brig. Gen. Reginald Dyer, the soldiers began firing into the crowd without warning. When screaming men, women and children rushed toward the exits, Dyer ordered his troops to aim at them. Many who were attempting to climb over the high perimeter wall were gunned down, their bloodied bodies falling in heaps. The firing went on for 10 minutes, killing an estimated 500 to 600 people and wounding many more. While Dyer was the one to order the killings, another man was also responsible for the massacre: Michael O’Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab, who justified the carnage and defended Dyer’s actions. Anita Anand’s “The Patient Assassin” is the story of Udham Singh, an Indian who sought to avenge the murders of his fellow countrymen by shooting O’Dwyer to death in London in March 1940. In recounting the lives of these three main characters — Singh, O’Dwyer and Dyer — Anand, a British-Indian biographer and broadcast journalist, provides a revealing look at the brutality and oppression of British rule, and how it seeded the desire for retribution in the hearts of so many Indians.  After training as a journalist, British born and raised Anand became European Head of News and Current Affairs for , and one of the youngest TV news editors in Britain at the age of 25.She presented the talk show The Big Debate and was political correspondent for Zee TV presenting the Raj Britannia series – 31 documentaries chronicling the political aspirations of the Asian community in the most marginal constituencies in 1997.  After Zee, Anand joined the BBC in various roles then in June 2012, she took over presenting BBC Radio 4's  the Saturday afternoon current affairs phone-in programme between 2:00 and 2:30 pm UK time from   Interestingly, Anand has also appeared in and won the 2017/2018 UK Celebrity Master Mind (4/10) beating singer Rachel Stevens, actor Asim Chaudhry and comedian Andy Zaltzman. This week on FC Flash, Akshay Kumar announces that Sooryavanshi will arrive in theaters on Eid 2020. Sooryavanshi is the fourth film in Rohit Shetty’s police universe.  Abhishek Chaubey’s Sonchiriya a film, about dakus in an existential crisis, was a critical hit but a commercial failure. It was speculated that one reason might be the Bundelkhandi dialect, which alienated viewers. The film was released with English subtitles but a Hindi dubbed version was also released. The film’s lead Sushant Singh Rajput tweeted that neither he nor the film’s senior cast had dubbed for the Hindi version and that this news was heartbreaking.  Meanwhile, the logo of Brahmastra was released on Mahashivratri at the Kumbh mela. The film is one of Bollywood’s most ambitious attempts to create a homegrown fantasy franchise.  Akshay Kumar wasn’t the only action star in the news this week. The trailers of John Abraham’s Romeo Akbar Walter and Vidyut Jammwal’s Junglee dropped. It was also a good week for Vicky Kaushal who has stepped into Irrfan’s very big shoes and will now be playing freedom fighter Udham Singh in the biopic being directed by Shoojit Sircar.
