Media baron Subhash Chandra's rise wasn't meteoric. It was slow, and carefully crafted. From being a school dropout, he went on to set up India's first private satellite TV channel -- the Zee TV, which reportedly reaches out to 1.3 billion people. Now 72, Chandra has seen many ups and downs. But, it seems, a lot of things are stacked up against him now. Sebi has barred Chandra and his son Punit Goenka from holding the position of a director or key managerial personnel in any listed company. So, is this the end of the road for Subhash Chandra?   Apart from Subhash Chandra, another news which caught people's attention this week was of alleged data theft from the government's CoWIN platform. The Centre, meanwhile, has trashed the reports. Minister of State for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has tweeted that the data being shared seemed to be from an earlier breach. But, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has still been told to submit a report on the matter. Amid concerns that the leaked data could be used for identity theft, phishing emails, scams, and even extortion calls, Bhaswar Kumar spoke to experts to understand where the problem lies and how it can be fixed.    Clearly the regulator has its task cut out. And it will not be easy with the swift rise of AI. Meanwhile, markets regulator Sebi has proposed tweaks to the total expense ratio structure-- which is expected to increase cost burden for asset managers. So how can the proposed changes impact stocks of AMCs?  Sebi wants uniformity and transparency by bringing all additional expenses within the TER. Moving on, we are now a step closer to the world of spatial computing -- where the physical world fuses with the digital. Tech giant Apple recently unveiled Apple Vision Pro headset which uses spatial computing. But what is this new technology everyone is talking about? India successfully tested its surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-5 on Wednesday. According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, it can strike targets at ranges up to 5,000km with a very high degree of accuracy. The successful test of Agni-5, which can carry nuclear bombs, is in line with India's stated policy to have credible minimum deterrence that underpins the commitment to ‘no first use,' the defence ministry said in the statement. Merck, an American drug company, will give out the formula for its Covid-19 pill—which could potentially save lives among those at higher risk of hospitalisation from the coronavirus infection—to other pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The drug, known as Molnupiravir, has shown promise in treating the disease. Merck signed the first agreement to license its production with the Medicines Patent Pool—a United Nations-backed public health organisation working to increase access to and facilitate the development of life-saving medicines for low- and middle-income countries. China has built a quantum computer 10 million times faster than Google's Sycamore, reports Indiatimes. Created by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China and led by Pan Jianwei, the quantum computing system is called, Zuchongzhi 2.1—after a mathematician from the 5th century. The world's biggest tech companies including Google, IBM and Honeywell, as well as several startups are in a race to build commercial quantum computers that use qubits, which can exhibit multiple quantum states rather than the binary states of 1 and 0 in current computers. Snap has hit 100 million monthly active users in India of the Snapchat app, co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel said in a virtual event on Wednesday. According to a report by TechCrunch, the company is striking deals with Android smartphone makers, TV channels Sony and Zee TV and e-commerce company Flipkart to expand its reach in the subcontinent. Snap has over 500 million monthly active users worldwide. Acko has raised $255 million in a new funding round led by General Atlantic and Multiples Private Equity, valuing the four-year-old insurance company at $1.1 billion, Economic Times reports. In today's interview, Mohit Yadav, co-founder of REVOS tells Forbes India about his company's efforts to build a peer-to-peer charging network with a smart-socket based charging point that can be used across different makes of vehicles. The P2P network also allows users to make some money by sharing their electricity.

It was in the year 2004 that Puneet Goenka joined Zee TV as its business head. Star network was dominating the ratings at the time in viewership and ad spend, riding high on the success of Kaun Banega Crorepati and soaps like Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. During the same time, Zee TV was making the news for losing one CEO every year. That was also the time when former Times Group president Pradeep Guha joined Zee. One of the first shows put together by the new Guha-Goenka team, Saat Phere – about a dark girl's travails in a colour-conscious India – started airing on Zee TV in October 2005. Then came Kasamh Se in January 2006. Both became hits, and Zee began climbing up the charts. By December 2006, it was a clear and fresher number two in the Indian entertainment space. Its revenues were rising, and so too was its stock price. Star's audience share, meanwhile, continued to tumble. When Guha left in 2008, Goenka was named CEO. The sniggers were inevitable. Zee's turnaround was firmly attributed to Guha's acumen, since Goenka was just the "owner's son". But he proved everyone wrong. Under him Zee's consolidated revenue has grown from just over Rs 1,950 crore in 2008 to Rs 7,700 crore in 2021. Analysts call it a 'cash-spewing machine'.  So, when the company was under pressure from top investors for a management reshuffle, the Chandra-Goenka father-son duo found a white knight in rival Sony.  The transaction was expedited after one of the largest shareholders of ZEE, Invesco, sought an extraordinary general meeting for the removal of Goenka within three weeks. Here are details of the deal. Zee shareholders are to own a 47.07% stake in the merged-entity, and Sony India 52.93%. Sony India will invest $1.57 billion as growth capital and transfer 2% shares of the merged entity to the Subhash Chandra family as part of a non-compete pact. The Chandra family will own a 4% stake in the merged entity, with the option to increase it to 20%. While Sony will appoint a majority of the directors on the board, Punit Goenka will be the CEO & MD of the combined entity. But Goenka's woes seem to be far from over. Invesco, the largest shareholder, with an 18% stake in Zee, is still gunning for him. Though it is saying it is not opposed to the company's proposed merger, it wants the new board to evaluate the deal as well as decide on ‘future leadership'. Let's now take a look at a timeline of events to understand the scheme of things. Invesco bought an 11% stake from the Chandra family on July 31, 2019, and became the largest shareholder, with an 18% stake. On September 11, 2021, it called for an EGM, seeking the removal of three non-independent directors, including Punit Goenka. The two non-independent directors quit two days later, Goenka did not. On September 22, 2021, Zee proposed a merger with Sony Pictures, with Goenka as the MD of the merged entity. The next day, Invesco said it remained firm on the EGM demand bit it was not against the proposed merger. While Punit Goenka would have to carefully deal with the present situation, we spoke to Vanita Kohli-Khandekar to know more about Goenka and how he is different from his father. Episode Notes Ariaki Dandawate, born and brought up in New Jersey, has been studying Kathak under the discipleship of Guru Pandita Archana Joglekar for over 15 years. Having been exposed to the nuances, beauty, and prestigious lineage of Kathak by her guru from a young age, Aria has spent the past several years seriously pursuing every aspect of the art form.    In 2014, Aria received her Visharad (Bachelors) degree from the SAMVED Exam Board, and in August of 2016 she presented her Rang Manch Pradarshan (solo performance). Her Visharad degree in Kathak has allowed her to study the essence of the Natya Shastra – a pillar of the arts – as well as become proficient in complex practical and theoretical applications of both Taal and Bhav Anga.   Aria has given solo performances at prestigious festivals such as Guru Wandana in Mumbai, Rabindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai, Geeva Heritage Festival in Kentucky, and Sangeet Mahotsav NY, to name a few. Seema Pahwa rose to prominence for her role of Badki in the popular Doordarshan soap opera Hum Log (1984-1985). As a theatre actor she worked with Delhi-based theatre group Sambhav, before moving to Mumbai in 1994 to work in films and continue her work in television and theatre. Subsequently, she played Maasi, on Kasamh Se (2006-2009), a popular Zee TV soap opera by Ekta Kapoor. On April 13, 1919, a column of British troops marched into the , a public garden in Amritsar, a city in Punjab, where more than 15,000 Indians had gathered for a peaceful protest against the increasingly restrictive policies of the British government, and in particular the deportation of two followers of Gandhi. At the orders of Brig. Gen. Reginald Dyer, the soldiers began firing into the crowd without warning. When screaming men, women and children rushed toward the exits, Dyer ordered his troops to aim at them. Many who were attempting to climb over the high perimeter wall were gunned down, their bloodied bodies falling in heaps. The firing went on for 10 minutes, killing an estimated 500 to 600 people and wounding many more. While Dyer was the one to order the killings, another man was also responsible for the massacre: Michael O’Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab, who justified the carnage and defended Dyer’s actions. Anita Anand’s “The Patient Assassin” is the story of Udham Singh, an Indian who sought to avenge the murders of his fellow countrymen by shooting O’Dwyer to death in London in March 1940. Jess Herbst is someone you may have heard about.  Or you may have heard about the “first openly transgender mayor in Texas as well as the first openly transgender elected official in Texas” that’s Jess, and she has been getting a lot of press, especially in her role as an “accidental activist” for LGBTQ rights. I first met Jess as Jeff Herbst back in the late 90s.  We were professional colleagues.  I was an editor and also in charge of all the video equipment at ZEE TV, the Indian Satellite Network’s US Headquarters in Arlington Texas.  Whenever I had a technical problem I couldn’t solve on my own, I would call Herbst, the smartest, most logical video and software engineer I’ve ever met.  After we did all the troubleshooting, we would invariably end up chatting about who-knows-what for an extra hour or so and became quite friendly.  And since I had a lot of technical problems we met fairly often. Flash forward about twenty years, and we reconnect on Facebook, and then last year I notice, Jeff has become Jess, and she’s also entered politics.

He began performing on stage professionally in Musical Theatre in productions such as Grease; They Are Playing our Song and Best of Broadway. He has trained extensively in jazz ballet under the guidance of Karla Singh and Shiamak Davar. He then moved to New York and began his acting career in the Big Apple. He trained at the Lee Strasberg theater Institute in New York for 3 years. During that time he was working on the local south Asian cable channels such as ITV and ATN as a TV host introducing Music videos and Bollywood tidbits. He then began the auditioning circuit around that time and landed some guest roles in independent features such as the Tic Code (starring Gregory Hines). He also began acting on the popular Zee TV drama Mausam that was filmed in New York and Bombay. We pick up right where we left off in our first interview, discussing homosexuality. We explore what the "Girl" in "Brown Girl" represents, and who specifically can be a part of that community. We move quickly to the world of Bollywood and discuss the ways in with Bollywood stories are progressing, as well as the impact they have. One impact is revealed as the ladies recall some personal anecdotes, and how Kamini's parents' divorce cause a shift in her relationship with Bollywood.
