This week Brian and Harrison kick things off by re-hashing some recent family events, talk through some AFL news, as well as some other sporting issues making headlines recently. Next, the boys are joined by AFL legend & mental health advocate, Wayne Schwass. Wayne played 282 games across his illustrious, 14-year AFL career, amassing; 282 games, 3x B&Fs, a premiership (1996), an All-Australian, NMFC Team of the Century and NMFC Hall of Fame. Despite his many great accomplishments on the field, it is Wayne's personal journey with mental health and the work that he is now subsequently doing in the community that is most impactful and admirable to us. As the founder of PukaUp, (a social enterprise dedicated to mental health, emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention) Wayne is starting the conversation and helping to change the narrative and stigma surrounding mental health. This is the most raw, emotional and sentimental conversation we've had on the podcast, not only referencing discussions around mental health broadly but also the sometimes 'complicated' relationship between father and son. We are grateful for Wayne's dedication to his calling, his bravery and his incredible perspective. We're glad he has found his purpose. Mental Health Awareness Month (October) encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing. In this episode of On Side, we talk about mental health, the impact and how we can make mental health and wellbeing a priority in sport. We are joined by former ABC sports broadcaster and mental health advocate, Craig Hamilton, and Georgia Ridler, Sport Integrity Australia's consulting Mental Health Advisor. Craig talks about his own mental health battles, which manifested at the peak of his career as he was preparing to be part of the ABC commentary team for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. “It changed my life significantly because I went into hospital with a manic episode and I came out of hospital with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and therefore had been diagnosed at that point with a mental illness,” Craig says. “It changed the way I had to live my life and the choices I made, the decisions I made and my lifestyle.” Mental health does not discriminate, he says, and has impacted high-profile sports stars including Wally Lewis, Andrew Johns, Nathan Thompson and Wayne Schwass. “It doesn't matter how good you are, your ability has got nothing to do with it.” He also talks about the release of his documentary The Promise that aims to spark a conversation, an action and a solution for mental health and suicide prevention. Among those featured are sporting legends Wayne Bennett, Tim Tszyu, Paul Harragon and Joe Williams and media personality Jessica Rowe. We also speak to Georgia Ridler, Sport Integrity Australia's consulting Mental Health Advisor. Georgia has been a leader in mental health and sport over the past 20 years and was the Olympic Psychologist for the Tokyo 2020 Games. She says the conversation around mental health in a sporting context is changing. “I think the conversation is certainly open and people may not be getting it perfect yet. We're all human, but I think it's a more open conversation for athletes and staff, which is fantastic, and I think it will only become more open,” she says. She discusses the triggers for athletes, whether it being anxiety from being away from home, travelling, expectations, injuries, as well as the conflicting values in an elite sporting environment, the added distractions an athlete today faces and how to build resilience. Ridler says if a high-performance culture is engrained in the sport, it has benefits in the field of play. “If culture is built well and there is a strong focus on wellbeing, then typically the work is done, particularly if we're focusing on an athlete,” she says. “Typically … if the person feels very supported, that means that then when they go into those high-performance environments, high pressure moments, they can actually just focus on performing in the moment and that's the ideal situation. “That's always the trick of being a high performing athlete at the top. It's a matter of being able to put all of the things into place before that moment of performance and then be able to just focus on what's necessary.” It is important to look after your mental health and wellbeing and seek support if you need it. We're really looking forward to this weeks show, lots to get through, might be a big one!Marko's come in with a scar on his noggin this week, he explains how he got it, and it's a classic example of a bloke in his 50's being dumb. But the scar is not the most interesting thing about the boys appearance today - Ox has brought a cape in, which was given to him by Pistol Pete who listens to the podcast - and Ox decides to do the pod today wearing the cape. But it gets worse - Ox admits to wearing the cape elsewhere. Embarrassing but funny.Marko reckons Ox looks like a bloke out of Puppetry of the Penis, which leads to an inappropriate conversation about the sort of stuff the Puppetry guys do. Ox makes the big claim that Puppetry of the Penis played for Prince (now King) Charles and Camilla.Ox has a Civil Selfishness scenario to do with coffee shops and public holiday surcharges. Marko follows up with a Civil Selfishness scenario of his own, this one is a shocker that you will be horrified by - we decide to get Seb Costello from ACA involved in this one to sort it out.Marko was in Canberra a couple of weeks ago with the great Wayne Schwass, and went to Question Time at Parliament House. He was unimpressed with some of the behaviour that he saw from the pollies - but he was impressed by one person, and he thinks that this could be inspiration for a new role for Ox. Unsurprisingly, Ox reckons he's the bloke for the job. This could be big.Marko remembered that Ox never gave us an update on the darts tournament grand final a month or so back, so he wants a blow by blow description of how the big dance went.In the last fortnight there has been big news on the Allens Lolly decision to shut down Fantales. Ox isn't happy about it, and wants to know what Marko and the family are doing about it. Marko reckons Fantales and Minties are the two most dangerous lollies in the world. We've had a lot of feedback this past week on the show, and there is some feedback on Marko's shandy fixation - Ox gives the results of a poll that he put out on Twitter on who drinks shandys, it doesn't come out well for Marko. Plenty of other feedback, keep it coming the boys love it.Ox reveals that he reckons he could be on Neighbours and that Toadie can't act - he wishes he was on the episode where Scott married Charlene, acting the role of Scott. And we get the results of the poll on how you position your 6 O'Clock. Ox and Marko are amazed at the results.Marks probation is over, following his 2-week ban for stealing jokes from Kevin Bloody Wilson, so he can do the joke this week. His first one average, his next one not bad, but his third one very funny.Follow a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers and get involved with the show on social media here: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. We'd love you to subscribe, rate and review the podcast - and if you feel like helping out a couple of mates, tell a friend about the podcast and help spread the word. Hosted on Acast. AFL great and mental health advocate, Wayne Schwass, is passionate about good physical and emotional health and urges Australians to tackle the difficult conversations. After years of struggling with depression silently, Wayne confronted the condition head-on and has gone on to launch PukaUp. In 2019, after a routine screening test, Wayne was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a bowel disease that usually affects younger Australians. Wayne and Stephanie talk about the need to normalise bowel health, the importance of open dialogue and good communication with your medical team and how the bowel screening test potentially saved him from bowel cancer.

Wayne Schwass has lived an extraordinary life. During his 14-year AFL career, Wayne played 282 games, won three best & fairest awards, was an all-Australian, and a premiership player. But behind all of these accolades, Wayne lived with obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideations. In this week's episode of Behind the Uniform, Wayne talks about how the cultures and attitudes of Australia in the 80s and 90s led him to believe that mental illness was only something that occurred in people from social disadvantage, and he refused to accept his own diagnosis, let alone share how he was feeling with others. Wayne also discusses why it's so important to have the communication skills and self-awareness to better understand and improve your own mental health & wellbeing. Through Wayne's personal journey and relationship with mental wellbeing, he created PukaUp - a social enterprise which aims to end suicide in Australia. This episode is full of wisdom, passion and hope. We learnt so much from Wayne and we have no doubt that you will too!

Steve grew up without a father figure in his life... All he wanted was to be there for his kids when he had them but slowly he was becoming more distant with them. Despite trying to learn what not to do from his own dad, he was following in his foot steps. It was when he was watching the video from Wayne Schwass at the late Danny Frawley's funeral that something clicked in him. Steve went for a walk and had uncontrollable tears going on... Steve felt like Wayne was talking to him and knew he had to change. The path of destruction Steve was going down was one which looked like a grim ending, but in that moment he had a choice. 1. Keep up the coping mechanisms and lose touch with his kids or 2. Ask for help.... Wayne Schwass joined Kymbo & the Rooch during World Mental Health Week to discuss the Importance of men's mental health and Puka Up's new partnership with Eharmony
The boys were joined by Adelaide Crows newly appointed Chairman, John Olsen, Wayne Schwass for World Mental Health Week and Adelaide Footy League CEO, John Kernahan
Luke Grant speaks with Wayne Schwass, former North Melbourne & Sydney Swans AFL legend and mental health warrior, who along with his charity PukaUp has teamed with eharmony to shine a light on men’s mental health issues as we head into World Mental Health week tomorrow. According to new research from relationship experts at eharmony, more than half (55%) of Aussie males feel the need to hide mental health issues from their partners, while a similar number (54%) feel pressured to be their family’s financial provider. When it comes to talking about matters of the mind and heart, Aussie blokes remain resolutely tight-lipped. Ironically, this lack of communication often intensifies emotional struggles, and is likely to be a contributing factor to the one in eight men battling depression and mental health issues each year. Mr Schwass, the founder of PukaUp, has openly shared his own experiences with depression in the past which culminated in him ‘lying, hiding and pretending’ he was happy for 12 long years. “While disappointed, I’m not at all surprised by eharmony’s findings which illustrate that over half of men still hide difficult feelings from their partners, and many feel they have to find their own ways to deal with things, rather than talk things through with their loved ones or mates”, he says. “When I had despairing feelings, I certainly felt as a man I had to contain them to some extent. But the problem is if you don’t talk to people when you’re down, things build up even more creating huge emotional isolation and disconnection. Over time, this sequence of events can actually be quite dangerous.” “That’s why I’ve taken my own experience to look at how it can help others. At PukaUp we are creating genuine and authentic conversations around mental health and emotional wellbeing– we tackle tough topics and offer resources to help build the conversational tools that might seem difficult at first but will actually help so much more in the long run.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
