Mike Salmon is the producer of the VRChat Worlds Gallery at Venice Immersive, which means that the scouts out potential worlds, helps track down potential events to feature, and coordinates all of the physical and virtual docents who helping to actually run all of the various world hops. The VRChat world gallery had over 30 different worlds that were featured on a variety of different world hops throughout the day, but there were also five different VRChat worlds that were in competition. Two were immersive theatre pieces (Gumball Dreams & Typeman), and three were VRChat worlds including Kevin Mack's Namuanki, Fins' Treasure Heist, and MetaRick's Uncanney Alley. I talked to Salmon about his journey into VRChat and the underground music scene, his short-list curation strategy, and collaboration with curators Liz Rosenthal and Michel Reilhac. In my last interview with Liz & Michel, we spoke about the festival's emphasis on trying to onboard other immersive storytellers onto VRChat in order to show the quality and extent of some of the worldbuilding that's happening on the platform. Salmon likes to call VRChat the YouTube of VR in the sense that the publication of experiences are much more democratized in the sense that they don't have to be curated by a big walled garden like Meta. This allows for a lot more experimentation as well as more avante-garde, DIY, punk aesthetics, but also experimenting with more bite-sized experiences that you wouldn't necessarily want to download an entire application for. There's also a social dimension to VRChat, which means that the social dynamics are built-in and often times the environmental design provides a background context for connection. Salmon points to the Rat King as a world that is like a community-driven and open source DJ club with a video player that allows anyone to throw their own rave within a VRChat instance. Each year Venice highlights a number of different clubs and events, and this year they featured LLLL SILENT DAWN RELEASE PARTY by PK, OXYMORE by VRrOOm, SANCTUM by PammeMatth, and SODAWORLD by Michael Balkind. You can see how I categorized the different VRChat Worlds Gallery in my Venice Immersive sneak peak post after I had a chance to check out the worlds ahead of my trip to Venice.
Kevin Mack is a virtual reality artist who creates abstract and surreal art, and his first VRChat world called NAMUANKI has been selected as one of the 30 projects in competition at Venice Immersive. You take a tour through some of his organic rocks, static blort entities that offer your a psychedelic vision, and then jump through a portal at the bottom of the ocean to go into an ice world and lava world where you're met with a variety of different mythic Sumerian deities along the way. Mack's project ANANDALA was selected for last year's Venice VR Expanded (interview here), and he attended many of the virtual events and world hops in VRChat, which inspired him to take a stab at translating his procedural and generative art style in VRChat. NAMUANKI will be publicly available in VRChat for the length of Venice Immersive from September 1st to 10th, and TBD whether it'll be available afterwards. I spoke to Kevin about his iterative design process and how he uses Houdini for his procedural art, the how he embraces paradox in a pluralistic fashion, his ongoing creative dialogue with what he perceives to be alien-like AI entities from the future, the backstory behind the different Sumerian deities that are featured, and then an extended discussion for how he's been collaborating with different generative AI art programs, and the debates around consciousness and AI from a materialist, idealist, and panpsychic perspective.
What would the long-term repercussions of being raised like Caspian be? What's going on psychologically with the Pevensies when they flit in and out of our world and Narnia? How do we cultivate childlike faith in a world that is calling us to do more and more? Which character does this psychologist connect with most in the series? These questions and more are discussed with PHD Kevin Mack!

Kevin Mack was just 16 when he signed on as a Victoria Police cadet in 1978, and 18 when he was posted as a junior constable to Port Melbourne. However, as fate would have it he was sent back to his home turf in 1986 where it was here he found his calling to be more than just a policeman. It was here Kevin became a beacon of understanding, hope and the listening ear that changed the course of the lives who he encountered. He has been known for decades around Albury-Wodonga as the community cop who took young people under his wing, founding a project to provide therapy and direction through camping in the wilderness of the high plains and rafting on fast-flowing rivers. He set about becoming a leader and mentor and adviser to young people who otherwise might have lost their way. From this work he was the 2010 Albury Citizen of the Year. After many trips to Parliament, campaigning to become a Federal Minister and many hours spent rubbing shoulders and conversations with the powers that be of our nation. It's quite clear to see that Kevins passion and purpose lies with the heart of the people. Those that don't have the voice heard from the upper echelons of society, but whose food and produce we consume on a daily basis.

The Storm Skiing Podcast #7 | Download this episode on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, and Pocket Casts | Read the full overview at skiing.substack.com.Who: Kevin Mack, General Manager of Burke Mountain, VermontWhy I interviewed him: Because Burke is a terrific little ski area that is facing several simultaneous challenges, some permanent and some temporary: its tippy-top of Vermont map dot that makes it look like a longer drive than it is, its proximity to the northern Vermont monsters that rank among the best mountains in the Northeast and make Burke easy to overlook, and its caught-in-limbo legal status while court-appointed receiver Michael Goldberg sorts out the legal disaster that snared both Burke and sister resort Jay Peak and is preventing the former’s search for a buyer. I’d overlooked Burke myself for years, and finally day-tripped up last March. That day, which I wrote about for New York Ski Blog, confirmed the social media whispers that built the place up as a beautifully pitched and rambling mountain with absolutely killer glades that far exceeded in scope and intensity what you could reasonably expect from a mid-sized ski area. I wanted to ask Kevin what it was like to run the mountain amid so much legal uncertainty, how the mountain fights the perception that it’s just too far, and just Burke in general. What we talked about: Burke’s rad glades; the Burke Mountain Academy and how those kids help maintain the mountain; what the BMA kids do in their downtime; Burke’s outstanding beginner area and seriously guys it’s one of the best in the East; where the mountain moved its magic carpet lift this year; their midweek schools program; the uphill policy; how the Mid-Burke Express changed the mountain; the status of the ongoing snowmaking pond-expansion project; how that project ties back to Burke’s potential sale; snowmaking upgrades in general; Kevin’s conservation background and how that helps him run a ski area in environmentally conscious Vermont; why he doesn’t see a tension between conservation and development; you think Burke is far far away but really it’s just seven miles off I-91 so come on man just go ski there; how multiple ownership changes have prevented Burke from having a “consistency of story” that could help you understand how easy it is to get there; the importance of the Canadian market to Burke; the growing mountain bike business; how the Burke Hotel is helping to transform the mountain into a destination; the importance of Goldberg opening the mountain and the hotel, because he could have shuttered both and could you even imagine the carnage if that had happened?; the current status of receivership and why Burke’s sale is held up; why Burke is on a different sales trajectory than Jay Peak even though they were both caught up in the same scandal; whether there’s any possibility of them being sold together; why receivership has so far put the mountain in its best ownership situation in years; how Kevin went from laid off to running the mountain; Burke’s relationship with Jay Peak and how they work together; Kevin’s reaction to the mega-pass mania sweeping the Northeast; guess what Burke’s pass sales are actually growing despite all the existential and industry craziness; Kevin says hey man, it’s not 1988 anymore – all this evolution is a good thing whether Burke’s directly part of it or not; the significance of a group of fellas known as The First 13, who are celebrated in a room at Burke and no are not the first 13 colonies; Burke’s Civilian Conservation Corps legacy.Things that may be slightly outdated because we recorded this a while ago: When we talk about the success of the hotel in attracting the kind of weekenders that may have overlooked the mountain before, Kevin says that people are booking “now” for winter travel. We recorded this interview in early September, so that’s what he means by “now.” Also, the whole receivership thing is evolving mostly out of site of the public, and so some of what we discuss may not represent Burke’s most current legal status. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interview: Because Burke is a case study on how one corrupt asshat can ruin something amazing. The EB5 visa scandal, in which Jay and Burke owner Ariel Quiros misused funds intended to build up Jay Peak’s infrastructure, is exhibit A on why I am all for Vail, Alterra and the like buying any mountain of consequence – whatever collateral price increases or corporateification that happens when mountains get scooped up, at least they will continue to exist. The fact that receiver Michael Goldberg made the decision to keep both mountains running during the transition and despite the chaos is one of the boldest and most consequential moves in Northeast skiing over the past decade. Had he let them lay dormant while he sorted everything out, they may have rotted forever. I wanted to peak inside Burke and see how it was going amid all the ruckus. Luckily, it seems to be going along just fine. Why you should go there: Because the mountain flat skis great. The beginner pod is one of the best in the Northeast, with rambling solid green terrain and its own high-speed lift that is completely isolated from the upper mountain. The blue cruisers are beautifully built along the upper mountain’s humped contours. And those glades. My one and only thing that I truly and finally care about in all of skiing terrain is glades. You can delete the cruisers and the parks and the race courses and the bumps and everything else – as long as a mountain has glades, I am giving it five stars and a smiley face sticker. Most mountains of Burke’s size have a few glades that they open like five days per year. Burke’s mountain is riddled with them, both on and off the trailmap. And they are steep and consistently pitched and widely spaced and just in general a good time. Also, who doesn't want to support independent places like this, especially when they could use a little extra fist bump to let them know that hey man we got you during this receivership thing? About that connection: Unfortunately, the audio is riddled with little pops throughout. While this won’t prevent you from understanding anything either of us says, it may be a little irritating for the sound nerds. All I can say is that I’m still working out the kinks to improve the consistency and quality of the sound, and I hope to do better in the future. The Storm Skiing Podcast is on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, and Pocket Casts. (Photograph courtesy of Snow Mack, and used with permission.) Groundbreaking digital artist Kevin Mack uses virtual reality to transport people into a different world--or several. And that statement barely does justice to his work. Kevin could be described as a scientific artist--or perhaps an artistic scientist! In 1999, he received an Academy Award for visual effects, after pioneering the digital creation of the tree in "What Dreams May Come". And in 2006, UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine gave him the title of Honorary Neuroscientist, as a result of his research and talks on perception and visualization. But perhaps his recent virtual-reality work is the coolest yet. "Zen Parade", by Kevin Mack, ©2019. Image used with permission. Using a spectrum of knowledge, including 3D printing and (in the case of his most complicated work) artificial intelligence, Kevin has created three VR experiences: Zen Parade, Blortasia and Anandala. Strap on the headset--and you're in the sky, flying at a speed you control. Expect to see lush, kaleidoscopic colors and evolving shapes as you explore. Zen Parade takes you through an animated world of living sculptures, while Kevin's Shape Space VR website describes Blortasia as "a surreal maze of evolving sculptures". "Blortasia", by Kevin Mack, ©2019. Image used with permission. And we can personally attest to the fact that Anandala is a fantastic experience! "Anandala", by Kevin Mack, ©2019. Image used with permission. Anandala allows you to travel--at your own pace--through colorful, almost liquid-looking structures and tunnels. Once inside the shapes, you'll encounter friendly living art entities. And you may well laugh out loud (we did!) at these denizens' response to your presence! Kevin's goal, in creating these three works, is to invigorate, entertain and enhance the well-being of his viewers. But the medical profession has also been using his Zen Parade in two research studies. Kevin talked about his background, the experience of creating his virtual-reality art and some of the neuroscience behind the perception experience. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Kevin's growing-up years inspired his creativity and curiosity; What first interested him in the technology of creating art; How childhood visions led him to imagine the worlds he creates today; His early experimentation with video and computers; How Kevin wound up pioneering digital art for movie visual effects; Kevin's story of creating his first VR experience, Zen Parade; What viewers will experience in his newest work, Anandala; The artificial-life process involved in Anandala which enables the friendly art entities to communicate; And, the story of the way this process enabled Kevin to digitally create the tree in What Dreams May Come, and the brain in The Fight Club; How Zen Parade grew from a "cool abstract art experience" to an implement that can benefit the medical community; What "the science of awe" involves, from a neuroscientist's point of view; Some of the resources Kevin recommends, to artists exploring VR; Kevin's vision for the future, with creating his VR worlds; The concepts behind the artificial life he's created, in Anandala, and the intelligent living creatures he looks forward to creating in the future.

(photo credit: Flickr/Tam Tam) 3:18 In a tweet, Nessa Diab, a radio host and Colin Kaepernick's girlfriend, compared Ray Lewis and Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti to Samuel L. Jackson's character in "Django Unchained." Did it hurt Kaepernick? 7:20 Kaepernick in context: Ali, Brown, and other civil rights leaders whose skills made them impossible not to hire. 10:00 The hard truth about America: if Kaepernick's protest is going to be successful, more white players will need to take a knee. 12:04 There are plenty of NFL players who committed actual crimes, but get to play afterwards. Leonard Little, Michael Vick, Donte Stallworth, Kevin Mack, to name a few. 15:40 The thing about solidarity is that if everyone kneels, you have to find a whole new team. 17:20 We compare teams huddling in protest and teams huddling in prayers. 18:23 Confessions of Recovering Skins Fans - why do so many Washington natives stand passively by about their team's racist name and racist logo? 19:22 If you're the Washington Football team with the most racist history of any team in the NFL, you don't have the moral authority left to belligerently defend the mascot. 21:15 What must it have been like for Ernie Davis, Bobby Mitchell, John Nisby, and Ron Hatcher to integrate the NFL, particularly the reluctant Washington team? 25:50 The Washington Redtails 27:27 Troy shouts out his Steelers as an example of a team that gets out in front of many social justice issues. #rooneyrule 29:01 STFU James Harrison dot tumblr dot com? 29:34 Our favorite TV shows and movies! 33:58 Was Cha-Ka, who, incidentally, was played by a white actor who grew up to become a litigation support manager the "black" character on Land of the Lost? 36:27 TV truth 1/3: Benny Hill, the Cinemax of the 70's. 38:00 TV truth 2/3: As tired parents, some of us enjoy our Judge Judy and Atlanta Housewives. Don't judge. 38:52 TV truth 3/3: most of us watched Dukes of Hazzard. The racism was overt and covert. 41:15 We declare a winner in Power vs. Empire, but give Empire a big handicap. 43:32 To binge or not to binge? 44:00 Whyyy are people so compelled to spoil on social media? 48:01 Troy gives us some TV watching homework - the best kind of homework: Watching Ozark. 48:45 Each hero offers up their favorite movies of all time. 52:20 Is Christian Bale the best Batman ever? And who was the worst? Our heros hit this tangent hard. Apparently it is up for debate. 54:10 Willie channels his inner New York Times movie critic by prefacing his top five of all time with a monologue about his dating life and theories on Rom Coms vs. Dramas with Romantic Themes. Pulitzer on line one. Our favorite movies: Jayme's faves: Best Man, Boys in the Hood, The Notebook, The Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Night Rises Willie's faves: The Bridges of Madison County, Jungle Fever, The Last Mistress, Dangerous Liaisons, 500 Days of Summer, Lost in Translation. Honorable mention to Celeste and Jesse Forever Troy's faves: Friday, Goodfellas, Inception, Godfather (Scarface is in top 10.) Erica's faves: Moana, Hidden Figures, A League of Their Own 1:00:06 We say goodbye after Willie announces his plans to replace his co-hosts with a stray cat.
