I'm not going to sugarcoat it, this episode takes a bit of a somber turn again, this time around the 30 minute mark but we do manage to spend most of it talking about the fragrances we've tested, worn, and even a few we regret. The highlight, though, is a fun grab-bag version of The Game thanks to a couple of our dear friends and fellow perfume enthusiasts who were so kind to send us samples.Danielle - @perfumeglow_danielle on InstagramChristina with Dry Down Diaries - @drydowndiaries on Instagram and SubstackLaundry detergent mentioned in this episode - Diva by Tyler Candle StoreDedicated to our sweet Melanie (2012 - 2025)(00:00) - - A Trip To Ulta (13:27) - - Things We've Tested Lately (37:22) - - More Sad Dog News (40:22) - - Scents We've Been Wearing (55:15) - - The Game Scents Mentioned in this Episode:Hot Cakes by Snif / Iconic by Paris Hilton / Ganymede by Marc-Antoine Barrois / Followed by Kerosene / Chance Eau Spendide by Chanel / White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor / Jovan Musk for Women by Jovan / Ciara by Revlon / Ethereal Wave by Liis / No 19 and No 5 by Chanel / Indigo Smoke by Arquiste / Musk by Kiehl's / Plus Plus Feminine by Diesel / L'âme Perdue, L'Astre, and Jasmin by Le Galion / Seven Veils and Eyes Closed by Byredo / L'Eau de Neroli and L'Autre by Diptyque / Neroli Oranger by Matiere Premiere / Patchouli Sauvage by Houbigant / Amber Sogara, Santal Sohar, and Orris Wakan by Amouage / Jersey by Chanel / Rimbaud by Celine / Fumabat by Couteau de Poche / Nuit de Bakelite by Naomi Goodsir / Oudh Inifni by Dusita / L'Air de Rien by Miller Harris / L'Eau d'Hiver by Frederic Malle / Le Lion by Chanel / Rose Tonnerre by Frederic Malle / Violette Hay by Marissa Zappas / Frisson D'Hiver by Serviette / Saffron Hamra and Oud Ulya by Amouage / Chypre Mousee by Oriza L Legrand / Amethyst Haze by Carolina Herrera / Bo by Liis / Side Effect by Initio / Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis KurkdjianThe Game:Nightfall Patchouli by Carolina Herrera / Poisonoud by Dauphinette / Bramble by Herbcraft / Dark Vinyl Musk by Bohoboco / Oud Sublime by Demolished / Artifact_0001 by Museum ApothekerPlease feel free to email us at hello@fragraphilia.com - Send us questions, comments, or recommendations. #142: In this episode, Frauke sits down with visual artist, singer, and writer Siôn Parkinson to discuss his new book Stinkhorn: How Nature's Most Foul-Smelling Mushroom Can Change The Way We Listen. Siôn begins by sharing how he got interested in mushrooms and how he first came across the Stinkhorn. He explains the difference between “Stink” and “stink” and how sound is informed by smell. Siôn describes what the common Stinkhorn looks like, explains how it smells, and shares what role sound plays for the fungus. He also talks about his experience with phantosmia, and how olfactory and auditory hallucinations, while feeling crippling, have been an important part of the journey. Siôn also shares what he hopes people will get out of the book, and hopes we can all delight more in the abject and disgusting because it can be quite delightful. The SIXTH season of On the Scent (whoah!) has us discussing those scents getting us through what must be the bleakest month in the calendar. What are we wearing, and why?Nicola's discovered a new & unusual way to experience a perfume she already had, and loves it even more, now. Plus there's a new home fragrance brand in town, and believe us when we say they are jawdropping-ly good… Talking about calendars, we're highlighting Suzy's favourites from two incredible fragrance selections, (which may have saved her sanity). PLUS: we answer #perfumeprescription questions helping one listener who wants to smell edible, and another seeking a perfume for her new pooch (who's named in honour of Stanley Tucci!) In this episode of Essential Aromatica, Amy spends time with Dr. Nicole Bou Khalil to talk about the profound connection between humans and plants. They explore the importance of spending time outdoors, observing plants, and understanding our interconnectedness with nature--as deeply as the connection between people and where they live. Ah, and remember to keep your “child soul.” Let's get clinical first, then get into the weeds. In 2019, Dr. Bou Khalil trained hospital staff on integrating clinical aromatherapy into operations, sparking curiosity and interest among many, despite initial skepticism. She emphasizes that aromatherapy goes beyond spa treatments, highlighting Lebanon's rich history of plant-based medicine. Dr. Bou Khalil advocates for understanding aromatherapy's benefits and recognizing that it cannot be directly compared to evidence-based medicine due to its unique nature. As she succinctly summarized; nature is not standardized. Further into the conversation, Dr. Bou Khalil shares the challenges faced by Lebanese growers and distillers after the financial crisis. Everything became costly, rent went up, continuous power was not always available. Organic certification and GCMS testing became cost prohibitive. Some people came from the outside and took advantage of the hardship many growers and distillers faced by imposing cheap prices on high quality essential oils such as Rose and Neroli. There's a bright side though, as Dr. Bou Khalil has an initiative to reconnect Lebanese essential oils with the global market. This is on a deep level: know your growers and distillers. There's a depth to oils that are made by people that are connected with their land and sense of place. Hearing her talk makes me wish I was in Lebanon with the Cedars, Roses, Bitter Orange trees and Myrtle! These hardships highlight a critical part of the overall essential oil industry and sustainability: some people create beautiful essential oils that express “the soul of the land” even if they cannot afford continual GCMS analysis, to continue offering organic certification or don't have reliable access to electricity. Would we rather have sad, cheap oils or oils created from a sense of place, with integrity? Nicole shared how one of her French aromatherapy teachers once said that “aromatherapy is nothing but bliss”. These words deeply resonated with her, and they have with me. Nicole shares that if she didn't have her aromatherapy practice, if it wasn't a part of her whole life, she wasn't sure how she would have coped during the Beirut Port explosion. The oils, Rose and Neroli, helped her; also, reaching out to the international aromatherapy community gave her a lot of support. The plants around you support you. She mentions the old, noble Cedars of Lebanon that grow high in the mountains; how they are symbols of strength, of the people of the land; they are symbols that the Lebanese people have the strength to go on. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did—I even teared up at the end. Want to connect with Dr. Nicole BK? See links below for different ways to get in-touch. Petitgrain, derived from the bitter orange tree, yields essential oils from its twigs, leaves, and blossoms, offering Petitgrain, Bitter Orange oil, and Neroli. Originally extracted from small, unripe fruits, now it's distilled from leaves and twigs due to fruit scarcity. Initially prominent in perfumery, it's now popular in aromatherapy for its calming effects, often likened to 'Lavender for men'. Linked to citrus oils symbolizing abundance, vitality, and success, Petitgrain signifies grounded support and diligent preparation for fruition. It aids those in people-centric professions, fostering ease, grace, and resilience amid challenges. Petitgrain also facilitates learning, lifts mood, and inspires optimism, making it a valuable ally in navigating life's complexities and returning to a harmonious flow. Neroli comes from one of the most generous plants in the essential oil world, the bitter orange tree. Not only are we blessed with a Bitter Orange oil from the rind of her fruit and Petitgrain from her leaves and twigs, but her delicate white blossoms gift you the divine Neroli. The oil's name has been attributed to the Countess of Nerola, Marie-Anne de la Trémoille, who loved the flower's scent so much that she used the oil to anoint her clothing and writing materials, and would add it to her bathwater. Neroli has a long history of mystical connections. Nymphs would use Neroli's scent to lure young men and women out of their bedrooms at night and into the woods to explore, play and celebrate the pleasures of love and life. This is a great essential oil for mood, for epilepsy, for sexuality and for skin care. It is also one of the best essential oils for anxiety and panic attacks. Are you ready to venture into new, exhilarating realms with Neroli? Adam has another video about Neroli essential oil benefits, where he calls it The Oil of Intimacy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdzXzfodaJk Liz also has two more videos about neroli essential oil beneits. The indigenous Bundjalung people of eastern Australia have long used Tea Tree as a traditional medicine for many years in a variety of ways, including inhaling the oil from the crushed leaves, rubbing leaves on their skin and brewing an infusion of the leaves to make a tea. The latter use is why Captain Cook named the plant the tea tree. One of the areas where tea tree grows in abundance today is called Bungawalbyn, which translates to mean ‘healing ground.' This captures the essence of this plant, which gifts you her essential oil when the leaves are steam-distilled. Today, Tea Tree, the most famous member of the Melaleuca family, is an Australian favourite due to its cleansing and cleaning properties. "As a woman who's highly gifted and co-creating your masterpiece in the world, it's your birthright to give yourself what you need, energetically, emotionally and spiritually as much as possible." ~ Lynne Taggart Guest Introduction: Hey, my friends, I'm Cindy MacMillan and I am so glad you're here. Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. Exploring the Seasons of Life is a metaphor for understanding the complexities of being alive. It is a reminder that life is filled with ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and moments of both growth and stagnation. Life is a journey, and each season brings its own unique lessons and experiences. As we move through the different “seasons” of life, we learn, we grow, and we become better versions of ourselves. Life is a beautiful and precious gift, and it is up to us to make the most of it. Each week I interview spiritual explorers, amazing coaches, and authors from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. I am thrilled to introduce my guest and dive into some really important topics today. Ashley Valliere is a Body Educator, her background is in personal/group fitness training, massage therapy and currently she's in school to become a Somatic Body Therapist. Her goal is to inspire and embolden people to advocate for themselves by understanding their bodies in new ways. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Ashley, welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. 3:57 I ended up finding it in a modality called Bodynamic and it is developmental psychology that is based in somatics. Traditional psychology is talk therapy, with Bodynamic, it's a little bit of talk, like obviously we have to talk but the idea is it's really body driven. 5:38 There's a lot of emotional, like resonance that comes up in stretching, because all of a sudden, you're elongating a muscle that's maybe been rigid for decades, right? And like, physically rigid, yes, but also like energetically rigid, and then when you open it up, and you're in a different place than when that disruption happened, you're in a safer place. Now, all of a sudden, those emotions have a place to be processed. 6:28 So the way that I've learned it is that there are seven universal emotions. We have fear, sadness, shame, anger, joy, connection, and disgust and each one of those has like subsidiaries, right. So, like, you can filter it down, kind of like the feeling wheel, right? They can all get boiled down to different kinds of sensations. 10:30 So yes, like I think self-reflection, journaling, meditation, contemplation, whatever it is to you, that you reflect upon yourself is huge. Like, that is absolutely how you can get so many answers, right, like, that's how you can really start connecting your own dots. And though a lot of times, we're too close to our own situation. So it's like you need that outside help. 12:49 Each muscle has the capacity for any of it. Like for any emotion, really. So, there isn't a specific muscle. It's not like my shoulders, is my happy muscle, right? Like, it's, it's not quite like that. I could give an example of, I like to think of our arms, and especially like the biceps, like those, those are our huggy muscles. Like that is like you bring somebody in and you're just you're holding them tight, you're squeezing them in, you're getting really good connection, like that is I think that's a joyful experience, right? 24:25 Just talk to your body. I think we overcomplicate it, but it literally is just pausing like, hey body, and ask it a question. It can be that simple. Keeping in mind that you might not get an answer that second, right? So, it's like, hey, body, why did we react like that at the grocery store, like that was weird. You might not get the answer right then but maybe later when you're just doing something a little bit mundane. Today's ep is all about the Summer & Winter Solstices! Here in the southern hemisphere we are nearing the peak of summer energy at Litha - which is also known as mid summer, while our cousins in the North are nearing the peak of Winter and gearing up to celebrate Yule. It's that time in the wheel when things shift again, and for us the days start to get shorter again, and for our witches in the north the light begins to return. Shannon shares mythology of Norse Goddess Sol (Info from mythology .net) Shannon and Laura discuss the main themes of Litha- It's our longest day of the year, a time of celebrating the light and joy! It's happening for us on Thursday 22nd at 8.48am AEDT. It's the time to honour the sun's energy at it's peak, ask for healing, illumination, expansion and one last joyful summer celebration before we dip back into the cooler months ahead. Then they move on to Yule, Winter Solstice - or Mid Winter - is the longest night of the Year, a time to celebrate the returning of the light, the sun and warmth. Days can only get brighter from this point on! And a strong reminder that after death there is always rebirth. This is the audio of my Third Eye Chakra Healing Meditation from my online course "Ignite Your Wild." This course was designed for women, but is not exclusive and meant to be open and healing for everyone.Link to the CourseTHIRD EYE CHAKRA | AJNAI SEELocation: Brow / Center of your foreheadColor: Indigo or WhiteElement: All of the elements in their pure form; light. Purpose: Intuition, inner perception, clarity of thought, and spiritual guidance. When your third eye is in balance: You are able to step beyond the perceptions of the mind and into a realm of knowledge and wisdom that allows you to see and understand a deeper meaning for situations and experiences in life. When the Ajna is open, you both see and understand. Remembering your dreams is a sign that your third eye is flourishing, as well as a heightened sense of "knowing" and seeing energy or auras. When your third eye is out of balance: We confuse information with knowledge and often exhibit arrogance and follow self-limiting thoughts and behaviors. We forget to trust our intuition, which in turn, further depletes the power of the Ajna. When the third eye is out of balance you may experience nightmares, feelings of brain fog, and inability to make strong decisions.Crystals for your third eye: Amethyst, Diamond, Lepidolite, Blue TopazAromatherapy/Essential Oils to strengthen your third eye: Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Neroli, PeppermintRituals and Practices to help open your third eye:If you experience headaches or eye strain (often causes by too much screen time) go outdoors and focus peacefully on nature. The color green is healing for the third eye, so surrounding yourself in trees and focusing on their brilliance will help settle this chakra.Touch the location between your brows of your third eye, close your eyes, and visualize white light beaming into this area. Repeat these mantras: "I am open and guided by my intuition", "My intuition has clarity, wisdom, and divine guidance", "I seek to always learn and grow from my life experiences", and "I trust and follow my intuition".https://www.myrituelle.comInstagramSupport the showSupport the show

Among several recent essential oil-related research papers published, I came across one titled The Effect of Citrus Aurantium Aroma on the Sleep Quality in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Poor sleep quality is one of the most common problems postmenopausal women deal with. This study looked at how inhalation of neroli essential oil might impact sleep quality. What is neroli? Neroli essential oil comes from the flowers of the Citrus aurantium, or bitter orange tree. This sometimes creates confusion in natural products, as the bitter orange itself is also used as a nutritional supplement. Bitter orange contains synephrine, a close cousin of ephedrine, which has been shown to support fat loss without the adverse cardiovascular effects of ephedrine. A Citrus aurantium subspecies called Citrus aurantium bergamia is also useful in natural health. This is where we get bergamot from. With all that said, the focus of this blog post is on neroli, the essential oil from the flowers of the bitter orange tree. Previous research on neroli According to a 2018 review, neroli has the following biological properties in humans or animals: Biological Properties of Citrus Aurantium EssenceAnti-amnesicAntibacterialAntifungalAntioxidantAnti-inflammatoryAntiseizure and anticonvulsantAnxiolytic and antidepressantCentral and peripheral antinociceptive effectsEndothelium- and smooth muscle-dependent vasodilatorHypotensiveMenopausal symptoms reliefPremenstrual syndrome (PMS) reliefSedative, soothing, motor relaxantSexual desire enhancerAdapted from Biological Activities and Safety of Citrus spp. Essential Oils, Table 3 The effects may vary based on whether neroli essential oil is used internally, topically, or aromatically. Read also: Tangerine Essential Oil, Sedation, Sleep, and Focused Thinking. Postmenopausal Changes Post-menopause, women experience a variety of health challenges due to their significantly-reduced estrogen levels. Difficulty with sleep is the most common. Sleep problems arise due to a reduction in melatonin and serotonin that follows a large drop in estrogen. Hot flashes may also cause women to wake often during the night. Though the hormonal shift itself may lead to sleep loss and health problems, prolonged sleep debt may amplify these health problems as well. Conventional medicine offers some solutions, but with serious risks. Hormonal therapy, sedative and hypnotic drugs are the treatment methods for sleep disorders but they can cause harmful effects such as breast cancer, thrombosis, drowsiness, and impaired mental ability.Abbaspoor Z, et al. Neroli Essential Oil and Sleep in Postmenopausal Women As mentioned above, previous studies have shown that neroli essential oil helps with many menopausal symptoms. As for sleep, aromatherapy with neroli essential oil improved sleep in studies with people who had type II diabetes, ischemic heart disease, or heart failure, and in female nursing students. In this recent, randomized, controlled trial, researchers divided 80 postmenopausal women, ages 45-60, with sleep problems into two groups: A control group and an intervention group. The control group received a bottle of almond oil. The intervention group received a bottle containing a 10% concentration of neroli essential oil. Researchers instructed both groups to put two drops of the oil they received on their left or right forearm skin, and hold their forearm 30 cm (about 1 ft.) from their nose for five minutes, twice per day, for four consecutive days per week for four weeks. They completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before the trial and at the end of the four weeks. Consistent with other studies, the women who used the essential oil experienced a significant improvement in sleep quality. It's also worth mentioning that no adverse events were reported. Happy April Fools! But there is no fooling around about the touchy subject of "there's and oil for that"! Join me as I scratch the surface of pondering the limitations of essential oils, where they do in fact shine and how essential oils and "consumption" don't go together very well. Tied into the aforementioned topic is soup making and the heart-breaking essential oil of the Neroli flower. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/essential-aromatica/message

#2 I recently participated in an incredible online education series called the Essential Oils Hormone Summit. I learned so many wonderful things and I wanted to share my biggest takeaways with you! The Essential Oil Hormone Summit was lead by the talented and beautiful Dr. Mariza Snyder. She brought in some of the top wellness experts and interviewed them on how to create hormone balance with essential oil rituals, recipes, and powerful lifestyle recommendations. Here's more info about Dr. Mariza and where you can find her! Functional Practitioner and author of six books Newest book: The Essential Oils Hormones Solution which will be available in early 2019 Visit her website here Check out her podcast Essentially You Over 25 of dōTERRA's leaders and wellness experts were interviewed and I wish I could share ALL my notes with you, but instead I will share some of the golden nuggets from this summit and the simple actions you can take TODAY to create more balance in your hormones. #1 The Foundation of Health is Nutrition Food is information for your body, and you want to be sending your body the right information Supplementing your nutrition is important in making sure you're getting everything you need each day The Lifelong Vitality Pack (LLV) was mentioned numerous times. This is one of dōTERRA's most ordered product and I take these supplements daily. You can order them here. Drinking lots of water is also important. Most people are chronically dehydrated which can lead to feeling stiff or achy in the joints. You might also have a mental fog, constipation, chapped lips, dry skin, and more when you're not drinking enough water. TIP: Fill your glass bottle or jar with high quality water and add a drop of Tangerine essential oil, Lemon essential oil, or Grapefruit essential oil for extra limonene to help clear out your system. Buy your high limonene oils here. #2 Self Care is Necessary Self care doesn't mean taking weekly bubble baths (although I aim to soak in the tub 2x/week!), or getting a massage, or doing some retail therapy. Self care means creating AND living your dream life every day. It means creating a life you don't need a vacation or escape from. Self care means putting yourself first. You cannot serve others when your cup is empty. Self care means saying “no” so you can make room for “YES!” Self care means feeling good – all the time TAKE ACTION: Spend a couple minutes in quiet mediation thinking about what you would like your dream life, or day to look like. Then, write out your “perfect” or “dream day.” How does it start and end? Go into detail throughout the day. Once you're done, look back at your “prefect day” and choose one thing you can start implementing in your daily life. Even if it is something similar to what you put on your paper. Display this somewhere where you will see it every day! #3 Reduce Your Toxic Load A lot of household products and skincare or makeup products have loads of toxins, chemicals, and other harmful components that are affecting our health and hormones. Consider switching out these products. I always recommend that once you've finished a product to find a new, cleaner alternative. And quite honestly, I've been making a lot of my own cleaning products since learning more about essential oils. dōterra.com has an excellent DIY section. dōTERRA also has an On Guard cleaning line which is super simple and wonderful for switching over laundry detergent, stain remover, and hand soap in your home. My favourite is the On Guard mistand I carry this with me everywhere and I especially love it after the gym or the gas station when I know I've touched things that many other people have touched. 6 Simple Daily Detox Habits Drink lots of water Dry brush before showering Sweat! (sauna, workouts, etc.) Drink a Green Juice! Try celery juice to reduce inflammation Spend time in nature (detox from “noise” and technology) Use your essential oils #4 Energetic & Emotional Alignments Liver-Hormone Connection Anger is the emotion associated with the liver and the gallbladder. Love your liver! It's helping to detox everything that is going into or on your body, it has a big job and it needs your help sometimes Pay attention to certain behavioural and emotional signs that your liver needs you: headaches, dizziness, repressed anger, frustration, resentment, irritability, etc. Try dōTERRA's Detoxing Blend: Zendocrine diluted on the belly or mixed with your epsom salts for extra support Gut-Hormone Connection You might have heard of the gut being your second brain before, but did you know that the spleen and gut are associated with the emotions of worry and nervousness? This includes anxiety. Read more from this article by Health Harvard Gut health and digestion is SO IMPORTANT. A holistic approach to a basic reset protocol is dōTERRA's 30-Day Cleanse and Restore Kit. It covers 5 main systems all in 30-days. Remember you can keep it simple and start with 1 of the 5 until it becomes a habit and once you start to feel better incorporate another. Lifelong Vitality Pack: taking daily supplements for foundational support and health Drinking Citrus Oils: cleansing/detoxing digestive system, supporting emotions, and so much more ZenGest/DigestZen: the essential oil form, or the capsules. Taking a drop of EO after every meal as a gentle cleanser for your digestive system Terrazyme: another incredible supplement and digestive enzyme. This can also be taken after meals PB Assist: dōTERRA's powerful probiotic to support the growth of healthy bacteria and strong gut health. This is such a huge topic, and it needs an episode of it's own. I'm planning on inviting someone special on the show to talk all about this goodness! #5 Keep It Simple Healthy can be simple. Start implementing one thing you learned from today, like drinking more water or switching out toxic chemicals from your makeup collection or skincare. Follow your passion and your pleasure. Check in and ask what your heart wants! TAKE ACTION: Know your priorities; what is important to you, what's in alignment with your dream life or dream day? Invest in accountability; maybe a friend, or a coach, or join a like-minded group; tell your social media network what you're up to. Have a plan; create a plan that your accountability buddy helps you keep!
