You may have heard the story of the man from Snowy River and his fearless ride through the mountains. This is Colt's story, of nickering mares and a rearing stallion. How did Colt escape the man? What did Colt see, feel and smell as he charged through the bush? Beloved children's author Dianne Wolfer responds to The Man from Snowy River, creating an essential companion to the original poem. It is illustrated with exquisite collages by Erica Wagner, which convey the depth of emotion with great tenderness. They encapsulate the mood of Wolfer's text, transporting the reader into the Snowy Mountains. End-matter includes the full text of Paterson's poem, along with additional information on Paterson himself, brumbies and the Snowy Mountains, and bush poetry. All gathered together, this is a new Australian classic in the making. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to author Dianne Wolfer and illustrator Erica Wagner about their inspiration for recasting this iconic piece of Australian bush poetry, their deep connection to the Snowy Mountains, and the man behind the legend of 'The Man From Snow River'.

BONUS POD: Keep It Peripheral—Eszter Horanyi of iRunFar. Nolan's 14, The Tour Divide, And A Life Of Possibilities. Kia ora e te whānau! Sometimes it happens. You speak with someone cool and interesting then you come away with a nagging stem of a question that you should have asked. When I spoke to Eszter Horanyi this was some variation of the following. “What does Coddiwompling even mean??” Well if you must know, to Coddiwomple means to travel purposefully to an unknown destination. And goodness me if that isn't a raison d'etre for Colorado-based Horanyi. Growing up in the mountains as a free-range kid, and then racing bikes for a decade, including a 19-day Tour Divide FKT, transitioning to two feet to focus on the shiny things in the periphery and not “big goals”. Splitting her time between Colorado and Te Waiponamu Eszter embodies the true spirit of adventure and freedom that our sport can (sometimes) only touch on. Kia ora e te whanāu. Please join Matt in welcoming the new co-hosts of Dirt Church Radio, Ali Pottinger and Andrew McDowall. Both have been regulars on DCR for some time now, so it should be little surprise that Matt would reach out to them to join him in the next chapter of Aotearoa's third favourite forest-based running podcast. Both bring a wealth of experience to the table, are community-minded, and love a good yarn. This is going to be sweet-as. This week we learn a bit about Ali and Andrew's backstory, what they are excited about, the races they've run, and their upcoming jaunts to the Snowy Mountains. Ali and Matt are heartened that Andrew may just be human after all, how much it sucks to run a marathon, and why Andrew would even need microspikes to run Coast to Kosci, he's an Aucklander. It's just over three years since Molly Bourke won her first race on Mouse Almighty at Wagga. Another 131 wins have followed, complimented by an SDRA Apprentices Premiership. Molly's talents were clearly evident when she skilfully nursed $58.00 “pop” Secret Plan over the line at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. She's now with John Sargent at Randwick and rode 20 city winners last season. Great to catch up with the little girl from Tumbarumba who has to pinch herself to believe she's competing successfully in one of the world's toughest markets. Molly talks about her move to the big smoke just over a year ago. She looks back on her first taste of Sydney racing when she won on bush galloper Zakeriz at Canterbury late in 2022. Molly talks of her first win for new master John O'Shea at Wyong. She acknowledges a recent story about her career by Ray Hickson in the Racing NSW magazine. The apprentice looks back on the shock of her relocation to the bustling city of Sydney. Molly says it's quite an experience to ride regularly against some of Australia's best jockeys. She pays tribute to two Sydney female role models. The talented young rider takes us back to childhood days on the farm at Tumbarumba, and her early education on stock horses. She looks back on other riding pursuits. She says it was her next door neighbour who alerted her to the excitement of horse racing. Molly remembers her first experience of trackwork and an apprenticeship to local trainer George Dimitropoulos. School wasn't Molly's favourite place, but she did well in one particular subject. Sport was a different matter. She showed plenty of ability in several endeavours. Molly vividly recalls her unimpressive race riding debut at Leeton on Mouse Almighty, and the magic of her first win at Wagga on the same little mare. She looks back on her transfer to a much busier environment at Canberra with trainer Doug Gorrel. Molly talks of the great support she received from another well known Canberra trainer, and the thrill of winning the SDRA junior title. The young jockey takes us through the freakish accident in which she was involved on the way to Albury races with Doug Gorrel. Molly has no doubt the fact that she was asleep in the passenger seat, may have saved her life. She talks about Doug's serious injury and the sad loss of a promising filly in the accident. Molly gives high praise to a select group of southern districts jockeys who helped her along the way. She makes special mention of valuable tutelage given by former jockey Darryn Murphy of the Skillinvest Employment and Training Company. Molly acknowledges the support of her master John Sargent, and the well known training talents of the expat Kiwi horseman. She was gobsmacked when given the opportunity to ride in this year's Doncaster. She talks of a few special horses to help her along the way since moving to Randwick. The Tumbarumba product says she's had to deal with one particular problem in her race riding technique. Molly says she enjoys sneaking back to her old stamping ground from time to time. Her mother Jacqie lives at Bega nowadays. The 21 year old speaks of the downside of living in Sydney with her partner Ed Waters still in Wagga. He expects to join her at the completion of his electrical trades apprenticeship. Molly isn't a movie buff but there's one she's seen many times over. Not surprisingly it's about a horse. The apprentice expresses her gratitude for having no weight problems. It's a nice yarn with a most amiable young lady from a tiny town near the Snowy Mountains. Is it any wonder this girl can ride!

Zhou Enlai planned in secret the details of the Chinese Communist's escape from the encirclement of the Central Soviet. He identified a Guangdong warlord who preferred to save his troops rather than fight the Red Army. The First Red Army was able to pass through a number of blockhouses, before reaching the last of Chiang Kai-shek's fortifications near the Xiang River and suffering major casualties. They lost their heavy weapons and almost half their troops at that battle. Then the Red Army moved quickly and often at night on The Long March. They reached northern Guizhou, close to the base of the Second Red Army, and rested. At the Zunyi Conference, the 28 Bolsheviks lost their previous influence over the Communist Party of China and Mao Zedong began his rise to power. Mobile and guerilla warfare again became military policy. The destination for the Long March changed at this point and instead of staying in Guizhou, the First Red Army tried to cross north into Sichuan. Faced with defensive resistance and at risk of annihilation, the First Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times. They escaped destruction, but now chose to move west and then north through Yunnan. They reached western, rather than eastern Sichuan. The Long Marchers faced Snowy Mountains and a treacherous bog.The First Red Army finally met up with the leader of the Fourth Red Army, Zhang Guotao, but couldn't reach agreement on a destination. Zhang preferred that they all settle around Sichuan, where he already had built a base and had the strongest Red Army.Mao preferred to continue travelling to northern Shaanxi. His column arrived there in late 1935 and in 1936, moved within northern Shaanxi to Yenan. It is said they crossed 18 mountain ranges and 24 rivers to reach there. Early on, Mao saw the Long March's myth-making potential and used it to turn this military retreat into a story of the Communists trip through the wilderness to a new land. It was symbolic of the journey from the old China to the new promised China.Zhang Guotao's column was soon defeated and, having lost his military strength, Zhang also lost power in the Communist Party and after a trial and self-criticism, went over to the Guomindang.Chiang Kai-shek might have allowed the Communists to retreat westward in order to follow them and take greater control over autonomous provinces like Guangxi and Sichuan. Because of the Long March, he was able to influence Sichuan for the first time and later made its then city of Chongqing his capital during World War II.The Communist Party leadership survived because of the Long March, but most ordinary soldiers did not. Mao's wife gave birth painfully along the way. Of the approximately 80,000 troops who left the Central Soviet, only about 7,000 arrived in northern Shaanxi, and that was with recruitment along the way. Yet much had changed, including greater autonomy of the Chinese Communists from Moscow. Please let me know what you think of the podcast here !Image: "Map of the Long March 1934-1935-en" by Chinese_civil_war_map_03.jpg: User:Guimard derivative work: Rowanwindwhistler (talk) is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. Snowy Hydro 2.0 was meant to be a nation building project, supposed to begin delivering green power to the grid by next year. But the pumped hydro project in the Snowy Mountains of NSW has been up-ended by a single tunnelling machine called Florence that got bogged underground. The mega project was once estimated to cost $2 billion, but is now four years behind schedule and forecast to cost much more. Today, Four Corners reporter Angus Grigg on the mistakes that were made and the billions of taxpayer dollars they've cost. Featured: Angus Grigg, Four Corners reporter
This weeks guest is Sandra Ireson, a seventh generation farmer from the Snowy Mountains! But she now finds herself on the Hay Plains with her husband and family. We first came across Sandra's work through her involvement in the Hay Inc Rural Education Program. About 10 years ago, Sandra and a few others started the program designed to bring city kids to rural communities and show them what's involved in farming and agriculture. Today, it's still going all guns blazing with more than 130 alumni and counting! In this episode, Sandra mentions that the local school is actually closing down at the end of the year... With no local school, it means that kids will either turn to School of the Air, or they need to travel further afield for their education. This is just one of the challenges their rural community faces, on top of natural disasters and population decline. Sandra has some great messages around drought preparedness and not buying into the media hype. Sandra is one of those people who is super involved in the community and seems to juggle a lot - she volunteers in various groups, she's got the family farming business, and she also wants to contribute to the industry. She's also been involved with a few different programs through Meat and Livestock Australia (episode sponsor) Red Meat Ambassadors Program. How on earth she fits it all in, we're about to find out!

Horsegirl Kat, an avid horse rider, joins to discuss a dark secret we have willfully ignored throughout the centuries. Are horses bloodthirsty carnivorous killers? From baby chicks, to human testicles, to even others of their kind, horses have consistently been witnessed throughout history devouring meat and sipping on blood. When pitted against mountain lions, tigers or even humans, they are capable of mercilessly eliminating their enemies! Bronnie Taylor has been in the public life 10 years, four as a cabinet minister, and two as the most senior female in the NSW Government. Until her party lost the election in March, she was the Minister for Women, the Minister for Regional Health and the Minister for Mental Health. She's now the Deputy Leader of The NSW Nationals and the shadow Minister for Regional Health. But that's just a taste of her political CV. What I had the privilege of discovering is the real Bronnie Taylor, the Bronnie who spent years as a nurse working in oncology and palliative care- fighting to bring services to her region in the Snowy Mountains. Bronnie fell in love with a country boy in year 12 who later became her husband. Together, her and Duncan have raised two girls on the farm, and it's been a wild ride. In our chat, Bronnie opens up about motherhood, farm life, her passion for rural health, and what it's like to be on the receiving end of political and personal attacks. This is her story. DediKate offers short & effective online workouts for rural and regional women. The DediKate team will encourage you every step of the way and there's something for everyone including HIIT, weights, boxing, yoga, pilates, cardio, pregnancy and postpartum. What do you get when you pair a talented illustrator and designer with an experienced and resourceful carpenter? The answer is simple - Mill Cabin, an understated yet wildly appealing bush retreat based in Crackenback in the New South Wales' Snowy Mountains. Back in 2019, when owners Niki and Trent first secured the plot of land that would go on to house the cabin, formerly the site of a timber mill, their vision was to create something that was unmistakably in sync with - and sympathetic to - the natural environment. Putting their combined skills and experience to use, the resulting structure is one that is a modern nod to the Australian stockman's hut, built using locally sourced timber and granite and furnished and fitted out with a range of handcrafted items painstakingly designed and assembled by this industrious pair. Since opening the doors to the property in 2022, Niki and Trent have gone on to receive widespread media coverage and a coveted array of 5 star reviews, reinforcing the powerful way their uncompromisingly sustainable ethos has resonated with the travelling public. Refreshingly, the couple have no plans to expand or multiply their current hosting operation, opting instead to work on regenerating the land on which the cabin sits where necessary, but largely leaving nature to do its own thing. My catch up with Niki and Trent a week or so ago was a thoroughly enjoyable one which I know you'll also find fascinating.

From her base in Australia, Leah regularly plunges into the icy waters of the Thredbo River, taking advantage of the power of cold exposure. In this episode, she shares how this ritual has helped her conquer her own battle against stress, anxiety, and depression, emphasizing the importance of listening to one's body, emotions, and thoughts. Leah has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Marie Claire, and Body & Soul, and has even created the world's first Wim Hof Method retreat for women. Because you can choose your response to your thoughts. Get to know your emotions; understand your feelings, your sensations, how your body works, your nervous system as a whole. Observe yourself, examine yourself and your situations. And I guarantee that you will start evolving and start to align with your purpose.” – Leah Scott Listening SUPERPOWER Notes: 01:10 – The very first time that Leah noticed the power of listening: Going on a seeking journey that led her to her ‘second life' 05:30 – As an athlete, Leah discusses the difference between listening to her body before and after her ‘second life' 07:46 – On understanding her mind and body: Leah shares how Wim Hof and his method helped her take care of her physical and mental health 10:23 – Explaining the science behind the breathwork and cold water exposure 18:46 – ‘Just to know who I am': How present-day Leah defines and understands resilience now 22:52 – What Leah pays attention to when working with other people and groups: “I look at them at a very micro level” 27:56 – Observe in order to be of help: How Leah works with different types of people and how they manage themselves. 36:54 – What's brilliant about these tools? Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting to Lee Christine. A bestselling Australian author who is proving that, at 60, it's never too late to turn lifelong dreams into reality, Lee is the writer of six romantic suspense novels and three alpine-crime novels, including the best-selling and award-winning Charlotte Pass, and best-selling Crackenback. In the past decade she has firmly cemented herself as one of Australia's most compelling crime writers. Born and bred in Newcastle, Australia, Lee always hankered to write. During her high school years, she sang and played guitar in a band, playing regular gigs around town – often penning her own songs, something she says is the very essence of storytelling. In her teenage years, Lee joined a soft rock band recording one LP. So enamoured by music, she would also study a male-dominated instrument - the saxophone. Life would lead her to teach, and then into the corporate world. In mid-life Lee made the brave decision to leave her corporate life as a trainer, to start writing novels as a full-time career. Now in her 60's Lee is a successful crime and mystery writer. Her trilogy of crime novels with romantic elements is set in Australia's iconic Snowy Mountains of NSW, Australia.Dead Horse Gap was published by Allen and Unwin in February 2022, Crackenback in February 2021, and Charlotte Pass in February 2020. Lee's writing has become known for engaging places and elements she knows as characters - mountain ranges, a ski lift, and mountain huts. Her ability to transport the reader into places she is passionate about is a gift. Charlotte Pass recently won the Australian Romance Readers Association award for Favourite Romantic Suspense in 2020. Lee loves connecting with her readers and has appeared on a panel discussions and live events. The mother of grown children, Lee lives in Newcastle with her husband and her Irish Wheaten Terrier, Honey. She is currently writing her next book set in Newcastle.Today we chat about music, writing, the creative soul and how you are never too old to follow your passions and dreams. You can follow Lee Christine (and find her books)here:https://leechristine.com.au/books/Https://www.facebook.com/leechristine59https://www.instagram.com/leechristine59 -The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Rogan Corbett is the president of the Cooma Car Club that runs anniversary events. To celebrate this momentous aspect and development, I think not only of a pro. Project but of a car here in Australia. He joins us on the line now. Good day, Rogan David. The preparation now to go to the snowy Mountains means carrying snow change, which you might have to suffer the imposition of turning off the entertainment system, getting out of the car to fit them in the special laybys provided on the side of a sealed Rd. The conditions would have been a bit tougher back then, wouldn't they?

When pitted against mountain lions, tigers or even humans, they are capable of mercilessly eliminating their enemies! Are they true monsters, or is this the result of hanging around humans for 6 thousand years? All of this and more... may be answered in the book we read! It's mid-winter in the Snowy Mountains and in the Thredbo river, where the water is 3.3 degrees, a woman swims laps. She's wearing just a regular swimsuit, cap and goggles. The swimmer is 40-year-old Joy Symons, attempting an ‘ice mile', a feat considered by some the most dangerous swim in the world. To achieve this official ice mile, she must give proof that she is alive 45 minutes after the event. A former Australian representative swimmer, she and her family live at the public pool they manage in sunny Rockhampton, Queensland. So what's brought her to swim in this murky pond with snow falling around her? And how will the grit that made Joy competitive as a young swimmer help her today?
