Welcome to Episode 187 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR’s have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week, the Geeks (Mitch, Jeff, Jake, and Matt Orrin) are virtually together to discuss all things geek. It's still Quarantine 2020 and we had another video conference to bring you necessary Geek content! The streaming services are all being taxed, and so far they are holding up well. Duck Tales is back, which is always great Rona viewing. The second episode establishes Goofy in their universe but we'll see if he'll be a recurring character. However, Disney+ only has the first two seasons and the the new episodes of the show can be found on DisneyXD. Since we're on the Wonderful World of Disney, we started talking about the Mandalorian which should be dropping in October of this year. We're ALL excited about the rumors of Rosario Dawson being cast as Ahsoka Tano for season 2. We'll keep our fingers crossed for it to happen, because that is the way. How heavy do you think Wolverine is? We talk about this a lot, and we continued in this episode. We've all assumed he was hundreds and hundreds of pounds, but the Internet sources tell us that with the adamantium skeleton, he is only about 300lbs. I guess that would explain a lot of things we have seen him do effortlessly, such as riding a motorcycle and landing on people without fully crushing them. Or even just getting up! We also talked about Cyclops optic blasts. How far can they go? Again, our sources tell us that he kind of absorbs energy and channels it out of his eyes so he is limited as to how far he can shoot which means he probably wont destroy the moon if he shot at it full blast. Lastly, we're still adjusting to the change in the world. Jeff misses sports...a lot! Will they come back, or will some just fade away? Fortunately, we have plenty of distractions from all the different streaming services. Too bad HBO Max couldn't get their act together to release their service. By the time they release, maybe mid May, will the world even care? Are we gonna be done watching TV due to all the front loading in the first month of Quarantine? What about when we are allowed out, will we even WANT to watch more TV? Well, we know Jake will...how about you? You can send your feedback and show topic ideas to broadcastgeeks@gmail.com. We dissect one of the pillars of Mike Robbin's new book: "We're All in This Together: Creating a Team Culture of High Performance, Trust, and Belonging" - We talk about the importance of "sweaty palm" conversations all the time, and especially during times of crisis. Get his new book here: https://mike-robbins.com/together/ Before starting his business in 2001, Mike played baseball at Stanford University and then with the Kansas City Royals organization. Injuries to my pitching arm ended his playing career at the age of 23 when he was still in the minor leagues. After baseball and prior to starting his consulting business, he worked for two tech companies in online ad sales during the "dot-com boom" of the late 1990s. Now, Mike works with companies like: Google, Wells Fargo, eBay, Gap, Adobe, Schwab, Microsoft, Genentech, Airbnb, and the San Francisco Giants.
Author/speaker Mike Robbins has a new book coming out later in April 2020. Who could have known when he completed the book in August 2019 with a publishing date of late Spring 2020 that we would be saying and be hyper aware of the idea that "We Are All In This Together". Mike is a fellow podcaster too with "We Are All In This Together" and among is previous four books, two of my favorites are "Bring Your Whole Self to Work" and "Focus on the Good Stuff." In this episode, recorded on March 30, early in the COVID-19 pandemic we discuss the threads of continuity that run through all of Mike's writing, speaking, coaching and podcasts. Mike is a sincere and authentic human who brings every intention and possibility for authenticity, vulnerability, kindness and compassion. The title says it all, and in fact, what a serendipitous time for my interview with guest Mike Robbins, who just authored a book by this same title. While the focus of the book is not surviving a pandemic, the tools in which we can come together and rise stronger are a universal theme that we talk about. Covering areas of how to get through all that we are experiencing right now, I am sure that you’ll find this episode just at the right time to gain extra insight, tools, mindfulness and awareness, along with the reminder that together we can be stronger. Mike is a renowned speaker and writer, always sharing prolific ways in which everyday experiences can create moments of wisdom and growth. 2-Minute Tip: Challenge the Audience to Discover Truth Immediately challenge the audience to discover a truth about themselves that proves the premise of your talk. If the group knows that you have an appreciation or understanding of their personal (or business) situation, they will engage. As a bonus, make them laugh within the first 30 seconds. Post Tip Discussion: Meet Amy Lyle I always enjoy to talking to folks who follow a path similar to mine -- sales, training, speaking. The way our careers end up different despite a similar progression is fascinating and demonstrates the possibilities available to all of us. There is not one path to your destination and not one destination for a path. Amy Lyle is one of those guests who followed a path similar to mine and has built the latest iteration of her career out of failure. Or rather, talking about failure -- her own and giving people an opportunity to share theirs. And she's funny! And compelling. I really enjoyed hearing about the training sessions she ran for recruiters. The programs may have been tough for new folks, but helping them find out early the role is not for them is valuable. We also have a great conversation about sales and storytelling. Amy even references Iszi Lawrence's appearance from last year. When it seems like the interview is over, keep listening because we kept talking. And enjoy talking about sweet, sweet failure. And an alpaca. Bio Most people avoid talking about their most cringe-worthy moments but not our next guest, Amy Lyle. She has turned her own disasters into The Book of Failures and her newest release, We're All A Mess, It's OK is a collection of funny essays and one-liners about the struggles of everyday life. Amy believes that the filtered world is making us all feel less than and tearing us apart- but being authentic and sharing your faux pas with others brings people together. She’s a frequent guest on WXIA’s Atlanta and Company's, author, actor and public speaker. We're All interested in Producing Better MeatIn this episode a tired Grady and Mike debrief their weeks. Mike traveled to Wilmot, OH to the Sustainable Poultry Network's conference where he presented a variety of poultry topics. In this episode, Mike chats about the heritage chicken challenge in terms of carcass yields. Is it worth it to raise the chickens to 18 weeks versus 16? Grady does a great job connecting chickens to cows and tires. Grady wrapped up a first week of processing at Cobb Creek and discovered one of the coolest parts of working with other producers and their birds; the opportunity to teach and learn. We chat about feather growth problems, feet problems, and diagnosing problems from the gutting table. And Grady reminds us, "When you're making the best profit, you also have the best husbandry and animal welfare."Send us questions to pasturedpoultrytalk@gmail.com and if you like us share us with your friends and networks.
