Today's exceptionally danceable Electronically Yours episode features an in depth discussion with Mark Wood (Demon Records) and author Ian Wade about their new 5 CD + 4 LP boxsets, featuring the best queer club classics 1980-1989.Across five individually themed discs, the deluxe CD set presents 53 original extended versions, including many hard-to-find remixes, encompassing full-length High Energy, House, Diva, Pop, Europop and Alternative eighties classics from the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Sylvester, Eartha Kitt, Divine, New Order, Hazell Dean, Laura Branigan and many more. Highlights include the hard-to-find 12” version of Village People's ‘Can't Stop The Music' plus the rarely-compiled underground club anthems ‘Pistol In My Pocket' by Lana Pellay and ‘After The Rainbow' by Joanne Daniëls. Not only were the ‘80s queer clubs where you were most likely to hear the latest groundbreaking developments in dance music (for example, house music would quietly flourish and innovate on the scene before busting overground and achieving near ubiquity as the decade progressed), there was also a heck of a lot of diversity on offer.Ladies and gentlemen - It's time to give in to sin – More Sin 2...If you can, please consider supporting the Electronically Yours podcast via my Patreon: patreon.com/electronicallyours

The Swedish hit-makers ABBA changed pop music as we know it: they sent 20 songs to the Billboard Hot 100 and turned the world onto Europop. But there is some lesser-known music by the people behind ABBA. Back in 1995, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA wrote a musical called “Kristina.” It tells the story of Swedes who found their way to Minnesota territory in the mid-18th century. In 1996, Benny and Björn came to Minnesota, where Kristina made its American premiere. Now it will be back on the stage nearly 30 years later. VocalEssence will open its 56th season with a concert performance of Kristina on Oct. 26.ABBA's Benny Andersson joined Minnesota Now from Sweden in an exclusive interview with VocalEssence director Philip Brunelle.
Stuart and Cristiano discuss Robin's second solo album, released in May 1983, 'How Old Are You?'. A departure from the baroque orchestrations and wartime tales which filled Robin's 1969-70 solo efforts, this album sees Robin and collaborator Maurice embracing contemporary influences, ranging from Europop to new wave synth.

"Life in plastic, it's fantastic." This iconic line from the 1997 hit song "Barbie Girl" by Europop band Aqua alludes to the Barbie doll that debuted in 1959. Barbie has long been the paradigm of societal attractiveness through physical features, as confirmed by a survey report by Fairmont State College professor Albert M. Magro. In the same year as the song was released, Magro published the paper "Why Barbie is Perceived as Beautiful" with reasons such as a thinner body frame, longer limbs, elongated neck, square shoulders, and larger eyes. Research studies throughout the decades have shown Barbie's mixed influences on body image and the rise of cosmetic-altering procedures to achieve these physical ideals that have been pushed as societal norms, such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and rhytidectomy (or a facelift). This has placed the medical domains of plastic and cosmetic surgery in a narrowed and misconstrued light of mere vanity and the pursuit of physical "perfection."However, there is more to the field of plastic surgery than cosmesis - with power and necessity in its own right by bestowing self-confidence and resulting quality of life. The field of plastic and reconstructive surgery daily changes, improves, and saves lives through surgeries such as cleft lip and palate repair, breast reconstruction secondary to breast cancer mastectomy, reduction mammoplasty to relieve Intertrigo, facial reconstruction after physical trauma, skin grafting to treat burn wounds, and much more.Today, we are joined by sixth-year plastic surgery resident physician Dr. Alex Sun to speak about the often misunderstood beauty of the field. He received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, where he was a Research Fellow at Duke University Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratory, and MD/MHS from Yale University School of Medicine, where he was an NIH-CTSA-funded Plastic Surgery Research Fellow. Dr. Sun is currently completing his Plastic Surgery Residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also served as the Senior Staff Fellow and Medical Officer of the FDA Division of General Surgery Devices and the Division of Infection Control and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.Livestream Air Date: July 27, 2023Follow Alex Sun, MD, MHS: Website, Instagram, FacebookFollow Friends of Franz Podcast: Website, Instagram, FacebookFollow Christian Franz Bulacan (Host): Instagram, YouTubeThankful to the season's brand partners: Covry, House of M Beauty, Nguyen Coffee Supply, V Coterie, Skin By Anthos, Halmi, By Dr Mom, LOUPN, Baisun Candle Co., RĒJINS, Twrl Milk Tea, 1587 Sneakers
"Humans think they're top of the hierarchy." The Live From Earth member talks about growing up in Sunshine Farms, the perils of competition in the music industry and how TikTok changed her career. You might know horsegiirL from her horse mask, her viral singles on TikTok or her hugely popular online videos. The DJ and producer—who famously never breaks character—has launched into popularity over the past two years, bringing her frenetic and contemporary style of hardstyle-meets-Europop mash-ups to dance floors around the world. Her fans, or "farmies," go crazy for her music, donning cowboy hats and pitchforks at all of her shows. In this episode of the RA Exchange, horsegiirL sits down with senior producer Chloe Lula to talk about her upbringing in Sunshine Farms and the key differences between the animal kingdom and the human world. They also discuss her involvement with the Berlin-based label Live From Earth Klub, an irreverent art and DJ collective featured as part of our latest cover story. (Two of the crew's other key artists, DJ Gigola and MCR-T, also mixed this week's RA Podcast.) Listen to the horsegiirL episode in full.

PSA: LHO will be taking a bit of a different direction with our SBGs this season in support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While this means you will be hearing a bit less about movies and TV shows for a while, don't fret, because we can make anything gay. —--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gays of a certain age, prepare yourselves for a wave of very chaotic nostalgia. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to chat about the early 2000s Russian music duo, t.A.T.u. This band rose to fame by making their entire identity revolve around their supposed lesbianism. The ‘All The Things She Said' music video still lives rent free in the minds of so many queer people, including one Leigh Holmes Foster. It was groundbreaking at the time, debuting in 2002 and featuring the singers wearing schoolgirl outfits while making out with one another in the rain. With very little other queer content available (this was pre-Youtube days!), the music video was not initially considered exploitative but instead was a drop of fresh water in the desert of dehydrated baby gays. For those who are less familiar with the iconic but problematic Europop stars, t.A.T.u. consisted of two teenage girls, Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. It was created by the creepiest creeper to ever creep, Ivan Shapovalov. He had already decided on the lesbian angle for the band before even auditioning girls for it. The band name itself is an acronym meaning ‘this girl loves that girl'. When Ivan books Lena and Julia, they are just 14 years old. With them being so young, it is easy to see how their producer managed to exploit them into participating in his gay for pay scheme. Something like this would never work nowadays, because we have so many actually out and proud lesbian singers and bands. But back then, it was pretty much just Melissa Etheridge. So when ‘All The Things She Said' came onto the scene, the sapphics were overjoyed to belt out the angsty teen lesbian lyrics while staring in awe at two girls kissing on TV. Everything was great and gay for about a year until in 2003 a documentary was released called The Anatomy of t.A.T.u. In this documentary, the girls admit to not actually being gay! This revelation sent queer people spiraling. t.A.T.u. was pretty much the only representation teen lesbians had at the time, and they were not even real! We've seen some intense queerbaiting before but nothing even comes close to this. We know one thing for sure, literally anyone involved with t.A.T.u. Should've Been Gay. TikTok started out all about music, so it's no surprise that it still continues to produce viral gold: from former health secretary Matt Hancock lip syncing to Barbie songs, to DJs showing a quizzical creator exactly what they do, to the Europop parody that's rather good. There's also a sad story about how a very talented black female musician's Proms moment was spoilt by a racist tweet. All that and much more on this week's show: enjoy listening!Seen a story we should cover? In time for the 'Barbie' movie release, we are revisiting our 2022 episode about the Danish-Norwegian bubblegum dance/Europop group's 1997 global smash "Barbie Girl," with a new addendum about the song's involvement in the film's soundtrack. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Barbie Fever has swept TMI thanks to Greta Gerwig's upcoming film, and Jordan forces Alex to discuss the making of one of the most polarizing hits of the '90s. You'll learn all about the doll's surprisingly scandalous backstory in the German red-light district, the band Aqua's confounding fixation on Rick Astley, and the lengthy lawsuit that resulted from the hit song, and why it won't appear in the new movie. Alex's hatred of "Barbie Girl" leads to an expansive sidebar on the history of pop music as a method of torture, while Alex ponders his revenge on Jordan for making him talk about this song in the first place. It's a wild and shockingly dark journey through the world of Europop, feminism, toy manufacturing and the War on Terror — so let's go party! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
My social media is plugged up with tilt rotators in high-speed montage to Europop and dance music, content creators and showcase pages need to get more of the industry and the work we do on show, the digger sporting a tilty was new viewing on socials in 2017/18 but it's old hat now and with thousands of hours of them at work it's kind of boring, no sorry telling of what they're doing or the work we're going to see during a high-speed montage of operation. Basically I'm having a whine and a moan because creators have become lazy in churning out the same content with a new soundtrack.

We started this experiment a little more than two years ago. Since, we have covered nearly 50 years of music history, nominating hundreds of songs for the Hall of Songs and ultimately inducting 97. In this episode, recapping the results of our 43rd election, we inch closer to our 100th inductee. Do we get there? What songs from the 1990s do well in our latest round of voting?Website: http://www.hallofsongs.comSocial: http://www.twitter.com/hallofsongsPlease rate and review us on Apple Podcasts!https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hall-of-songs/id1550546067
Here at Hall of Songs, we take seriously the task of discussing and nominating tunes for our prestigious pantheon. When we place songs on the ballot, we truly believe that they belong (OK, there have been exceptions). So in this episode, recapping our 42nd election, we talk at length about a few trends we've seen, and if they really live up to the sanctity of our hall of fame for songs. Yup, it's Rant Zone time!OK, we also induct songs. We do! It's really not that serious, but this episode will take you behind the curtain a bit more. Songs from 1990 to '96 are up for induction here, so listen to find out what got in, what didn't get in, and what grinded our gears.Website: http://www.hallofsongs.comSocial: http://www.twitter.com/hallofsongsPlease rate and review us on Apple Podcasts!https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hall-of-songs/id1550546067
Welcome to 1993. Autumn, to be exact. And how was it all looking?Well, it wasn't really baggy like 1990, or rave-y like 1991, but it wasn't Britpoppy like 1995. It was all a bit…well, who knows? Can we say, a bit of a pop hinterland? And were there any clues across our ever reliant pop culture landscape for how ‘93 had shaped up? Well in a year that saw the launch of two modern icons - the Vauxhall Corsa and QVC - actually, perhaps, we'll come back to them later. Not!Back to the hinterland then. We had the ever reliant and still relatively imperial Neil and Chris, resplendent in their dayglo uniforms marching to the Village People in Moscow. Or perhaps your CD single (with 6 extra dance mixes) was celebrating the glorious invasion of Europop of Culture Beat, 2 Unlimited and Haddaway. Or maybe you were, frankly too cool for school and had bunked off to the shimmering r'n'b from SWV, Janet and Eternal. And where was Indie? What even was indie in 1993?One thing is for certain, your musical tribe in 1993 was considerably, undeniably, very untribal. But isn't waiting for the Next Big Thing - and spotting the red herrings along the way - so terribly exciting? So if it's autumn ‘93, it's definitely time for NOW That's What I Call Music 26! And joining us for this excursion back 30 (!) years, none other than author and chief rock & pop critic for The Times Will Hodgkinson. Will selects his highlights from the wonderfully packaged 40 Top Chart Hits as well exploring the wider pop culture landscape of 1993. Along the way, we discover Will's inspiration for his, quite frankly wonderful exploration of 1970's pop ‘In Perfect Harmony' and how 1973 and 1993 really had a lot more in common than you may think. We also take excursions into some of 1993's other memorable musical moments, courtesy of Bjork, London's eclectic club scene and (unashamedly) Bowie's Buddha of Suburbia (with a real cameo from Will, no less!)Expect starring (and a few understudy) roles from Meat Loaf, The Shamen, Lawrence from Denim, Stakka Bo (only a bit Stereo MCs), Crustys, Frank Farian, Hacky sacks(!) and some illicit colour photocopying - you will be shocked! All of this and much, much more! And find out why the Spin Doctors (amongst a few others) will not be returning our calls. What better palate cleanser from a month of Weezer than a little journey into late 90s Euro Dance music? Okay, there are probably a bunch of better options, but we chose to listen to Eiffel 65's 1999 album Europop so you don't have to. You still totally can. We won't stop you, all we can do is warn you. Which, to be clear, we are also electing not to do. Want to support the show and get bonus eps in our off-week? Pay what you can at our PatreonWant to reach out? After a barren 5 month interregnum a mathematical majority of the Madaxeman Podcast crew stumble grudgingly back onto the airwaves with a near-2-hour episode to kickstart the 3rd series. Any semblance of order, structure and giving the impression of planning is almost instantly thrown out of the window as we immediately go off tangent in a fascinating discussion around the origin (and ending) of the entire concept of a Grenadier, before we swerve decisively into some surprisingly well informed opinions about 3D printing, consider whether the long time coming Dire Straits revival will include a remixed Europop single called "Gaming by the Pool", have a vote to decide if the 1980's RPG "Traveller" ever really existed in our stub, try to guess who won the 1936 Eurovision Song Contest, witter on about Contrast paints (again..), and then give a look back to Britcon and a heads-up to the SELWG show. Of course, Andy's quiz also returns from the mists of time with something equally and typically topical too, aided and abetted by its timeless theme music. Tamsin's 3D printer we discuss at some length is an Anycubic Kobra, but I've been asked to flag up that it's not necessarily a good one for a beginner - Tamsin instead suggests the Elegoo Neptune 3, or the Anycubic Vyper if you have a bit more bench space available. For both of those she'd recommend replacing the PTFE tubing they come with with Capricorn PTFE tubing (affilate links to Amazon). The pictures of some of the stuff we talked about is also online here: Tamsin's Blog The Madaxeman Blog

In the late 90s, three DJs living in Italy spent a few hours creating a club track that couldn't even keep people on the dance floor. That would quickly change thanks to a little radio airplay, and before they knew it, “Blue” became an international hit. The song is equal parts catchy and silly, but what exactly is it about? This week, we're joined by Eric Taft to help figure it out. Beyond producing, engineering, and playing in The Great Heights Band and So Fetch, Eric is also secretly one of Eiffel 65's biggest fans. He helps us dive into the lyrics of “Blue” and figure out what's really happening in this Europop classic. If you like the show, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. ‘One goal, one mission…one vision!'.November 1985, and the latest poptastic edition of NOW kicks off with the unifying cry from Freddie and the boys, after an unforgettable summer when music really did seem to change the world from London to Philadelphia and beyond. But how representative of those wonderful UK charts is Now, That's What I Call Music 6?Well, the events of Live Aid had certainly worked some magic for the chart placings for some with such luminaries as Queen, Elton, Phil and Tina all checking in across this double album. Elsewhere, some of the decades greatest pop stars where reinventing their sound as the second half of the 80s required some image and sound makeovers. Level 42, Eurythmics and Simple Minds were powering on, whilst new acts such as Fine Young Cannibals and The Communards were emerging and looking forwards to their own future decade success.Dance music was certainly evolving and while the DJs in Chicago were beginning to plug in their 808s, the dancefloor hits of NOW6 had a distinctive Europop feel, thanks to the Tarzan inspired Baltimora, Mai Tai and Maria Vidal's evergreen body rocking workout. Elsewhere, three fifths of Duran Duran were looking for your votes (mark x next to Arcadia for that particular side project), some 80s alternative greats were still providing memorable hits and Paul Hardcastle was switching his focus from Vietnam to The Great Train Robbery with the help of Bob Hoskins and Laurence Olivier. Yes, it was indeed the 80s!And of course, we can't revisit this compilation without mentioning THAT first Deal with God. Stranger Things indeed!Join Complete Control PR Madam and Popmaster champion Polly Birkbeck as we head back to Now, That's What I Call Music 6 and the rest of autumn 1985.And if all of this wasn't enough, discover Polly's first musical glam and punk loves, which bands she followed around the country in ‘85 (do fans still even do this outwith TikTok?), what was the best year for pop and why she doesn't really want to talk about Live Aid.As the tagline on the album instructed us, Feel The Quality indeed! “It's not over, not over, not over, not over yet.” Now we don't know whether Europop banger merchant Grace, and later New Rave funsters Klaxons, were looking into the future to give an insight into Saints season going into the Big cinchy Play-Offs, but they certainly were on the money. It was the end of an era as the final Dead Or Alive single produced by Stock Aitken Waterman was released. And although "I'll Save You All My Kisses" wasn't the biggest of hits, that song and the story of what came next for SAW's first number one act is given the in-depth treatment in this episode. In an archival interview with DJ Sveta, the late Pete Burns talks about the conclusion of his time at PWL — and his return there in 1993. Producer Barry Stone (of Jewels & Stone and The Alias) shares his memories of working with Dead Or Alive on their remake of "Rebel Rebel" and the Nukleopatra album. Also this episode, Bananarama's next big hit came in the form of the Europop-influenced "Love In The First Degree", while there are a couple of lesser known tracks to cover: the 1987 PWL remix of "A Walk In The Park" by Nick Straker, which Pete Hammond tells us about, and Edwin Starr's "Whatever Makes Our Love Grow".

As a preview for Idiotprogrammer's 2nd episode of OoO on "unpopular pop music," we take a brief look at some of Europe's most popular female vocalists since the 1980s. We have differing views on which we'd actually choose to listen to today and whether we'd prefer any of them over our episode's album picks, neither of which is listed in All Music Guide, as ever the measurement standard for the quiz.

An Album a Day is my exploration into the Korean music scene. This podcast will cover mainstream, indie and some underground artists within the scene and provide both factual and opinionated commentary. The biggest benefit to sharing my thoughts this way is that it will hopefully expose you to more great music and exploration of your own.The sixth maxi single, First Love was announced almost a year before it was actually released. Though the reasons remain unknown for the delays, Im willing to guess that the intensive preparation for one of the most physically demanding comebacks yet had something to do with it. Little did they know it then, but this was the beginning of the end. More insight, right after the drop. Youre tuned into An Album a Day. Show start.Hey yall, following todays episode, we will have final thoughts on After Schools Korean discography. But before we get into my 100% unscripted rambling, I must acknowledge that this album, First Love, was the last Korean album before an indefinite hiatus clutched the After School name. ??? (romanized as Cheotsarang) was released June 13, 2013 and South Korean audiences never heard from the as a group again. Take note of how I said that it was the last Korean album -- they still had a receptive audience in Japan until 2015, but the hiatus reached all angles of After School and sat them down. Its a bit ironic, as the title track from this album did indeed sit some band members down, literally. But first, the music. Clocking in at 20 minutes, the album delivers dance tracks and R&B flavor in the style weve come to anticipate from After School. Brave Brothers, who we havent heard from on their album in a while, hold down the first and second track, 8 Hot Girl and First Love respectively. The first track lets the listener know that the ladies are back after a long wait and bringing something sexy to the scene, then properly falls into the title track. Brave Brothers took complete reign on the title track, actually, what with writing the lyrics and producing the music. He said hes collecting nothing but wins and I dont blame him. (Yes, for those unfamiliar, Brave Brothers is one man by the name of Kang Dong Chul and his sound is more familiar to you than you know. Well talk about him in depth someday.) Oh yes, 8 Hot Girl can be chalked up to a Konglish language moment since its missing an -s, but this could also be semi-intentional. Remember, Ive said that After School is one band, one sound. Who knows?Production-wise, the album has a darker tone, especially stand-out track Dressing Room. The production team for this, the third track of the album, jumps to-and-fro from Europop and futuristic influences, settling somewhere between rock and R&B. Its the best sounding song on the album because of its unexpected presence. Its also the most memorable song with ad libs and attempts at vocal riffs. Track four, Times Up, has a faster tempo and incorporates live and MIDI stringed instruments, and features more singing in higher registers for the chorus. The rap breakdown has a refrain thats not bad either. At this point in the album, theyve delivered two ballads but this one doesnt feel like their usual formula. Fifth track Love Beat brings us back to the pep rally/aerobics class/nightclub pulse thats fun but missing something. The song constantly feels like youre waiting for a musical drop -- an extra accent on the 808? An increase in percussion? Somethings missing, seriously! A handclap, something?! Songs that hold you at a standstill are so unkind, as your awareness of how music should work is challenged each minute the song is on. Its an unfulfilled experience that is relieved by the closing track, Makeup & Tears. Live instruments and clear transitions that move the song along, Jungah and Raina sing out about crying over memories while putting on their makeup. The lyrics are
Huge piano riffs, massive synth lines and glossy production, early 90's Italo dance is a fusion of House, Techno, Disco, Hip-hop and anything else you can stuff into a Sampler, all arranged in a Europop format. It's cheesy as hell but always got the dancefloor rocking and still does to this day.
