Gabe Joey and Chris talk... Daniel Isn't Real is a 2019 American psychological horror film directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, from a screenplay by Mortimer and Brian DeLeeuw, based upon the novel In This Way I Was Saved by DeLeeuw. It stars Miles Robbins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sasha Lane, Mary Stuart Masterson, Hannah Marks, Chukwudi Iwuji and Peter McRobbie.   As a child, shy and troubled Luke witnesses the aftermath of a mass shooting at a neighborhood coffee shop. He meets another boy among the onlookers at the scene: cool and confident Daniel, who invites him to play and quickly becomes his friend. Although adults such as Luke's mother, Claire (Mary Stuart Masterson), cannot see Daniel, he appears physically real to Luke. The boys become close playmates, and their connection helps Luke cope with his parents' divorce. Their friendship comes to an abrupt end when Daniel convinces Luke that blending an entire bottle of Claire's psychiatric medication into a smoothie will give her superpowers. Instead, it results in a near-fatal poisoning. Claire convinces Luke to send Daniel away by symbolically locking him in her mother's old dollhouse. Years later, the college-aged Luke (Miles Robbins) is paralyzed by anxiety over his future, his social life and his responsibility to his mother, who struggles with paranoid delusions and a hatred of her own reflection. He confides to his therapist, Dr. Cornelius Braun (Chukwudi Iwuji), that he is afraid he will eventually become just like her. One night, while sleeping over at his childhood home, Luke unlocks the dollhouse. Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) reappears as an adult. His influence initially appears benign as he helps Luke thwart Claire's suicide attempt, succeed in school, and begin a romance with an artist named Cassie (Sasha Lane). However, he quickly starts exhibiting aggressive behavior, becoming enraged when Luke doesn't obey him. When Luke won't have sex with a psychology student named Sophie (Hannah Marks) on a date, Daniel forcibly takes over his body, has rough sex with Sophie and attacks Luke's roommate. Luke is banned from campus as a result and begins to question his own sanity, believing he may have schizophrenia. He attempts to banish Daniel back to the dollhouse but is unsuccessful. Luke becomes increasingly unstable, convinced that Daniel is taking over his body while he sleeps. He visits the father of John Thigpen, the shooter whose crime began the film, and learns John also had an invisible friend named Daniel. Luke begins to realize Daniel is a supernatural entity, not an imaginary friend. Dr. Braun makes a late-night house call in an attempt to separate Luke and Daniel, but only succeeds in allowing Daniel to take over Luke's body and banish Luke's consciousness to the dollhouse. Daniel then kills Braun. He decides his next target will be Cassie. Daniel reveals his true nature to Cassie, describing himself as "a traveler," before chasing her to the rooftop of her apartment building. Cassie begs Luke to come back to reality; hearing her from inside the dollhouse, he summons the will to escape. In a final confrontation with Luke, Daniel claims he has helped people for centuries, but none of them have deserved his help. Luke calls him a parasite. Luke realizes he and Daniel can never truly be separated. After ensuring Cassie has escaped to safety, he kills himself by jumping from the roof. Cassie lies down beside his body. Daniel, surrounded by an otherworldly darkness, reverts to his true monstrous form, implying he will now seek out a new host.

Luke Rigg argues that more young magistrates will improve justice. When Luke told his friends and family he wanted to be a magistrate aged just 20, they all had one question: "Why are you doing that, Luke?" In this talk Luke takes us inside the magistrates' courts where for six years he has been convicting, sentencing, and acquitting offenders, many of his own age, to explain how he answers that question. Luke is introduced by host Olly Mann. Producer: Giles Edwards.

What is Up SharkNation! In this episode Luke and Mark learn about Bitcoin and crypto investing from Kryptalk's Shane Talty. Shane has been investing in Bitcoin for years and runs a YouTube channel where he provides updates and insights on all things bitcoin. Luke and Mark are looking to become investors in crypto but want to get a good grounding in the subject before they dive in. Shane provides his take on Bitcoin investing as well as his story of how he got involved. Key Take aways: 1. Cryptocurrencies are volatile and investors should learn all they can about them before investing. 2. Like other investments, a long term view is helpful to manage emotions during down cycles.  3. There are a lot of exchanges out there but Coinbase have made it very easy to start investing, and because they are a publicly traded company they feel more safe than other exchanges.     4. There are trading strategies out there for "scalping" alternative coins in speculative trades but these strategies require special knowledge and don't suit the long term investor.     5. There may be a future where crypto currency is the defacto way to pay for things, but this is a long way off. 6. When Luke and Mark start investing they will be 'dollar cost averaging' - meaning they will be buying when the market moves up, down, or sideways, constantly. In this way they should be able to smooth out their return over time and avoid trying to "time the market. If you would like to watch Shane in action his Youtube channel is here:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9d0CqTAyAvOiOn4-UGUg1A Book mentioned as a good resource to learn about Bitcoin: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bitcoin-Standard-Decentralized-Alternative-Central/dp/1119473861 For feedback: Luke@shark.ie

When Luke mentions the feast of Pentecost in our first reading, we can easily gloss over the implication that Pentecost is a Jewish feast. One of four springtime feasts on the Jewish liturgical calendar, Pentecost celebrated both the ingathering of the harvest as well as the giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Comparing and contrasting the first Pentecost with the new Pentecost we discover that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit does indeed bring about a harvest, one that is new and rich in meaning. This week we welcome old friends and new with our special guests TYLER Q. ROSEN and JOAN CARR-WIGGIN as they talk about their latest films, DOIN' MY DRUGS and GETTING TO KNOW YOU, respectively. First up, writer/director/cinematographer/editor/producer TYLER Q. ROSEN joins us live to talk about his feature documentary directorial debut – DOIN' MY DRUGS. Now, I bet you're thinking this documentary has something to do with drug abuse. If you are, then you'd be wrong. DOIN' MY DRUGS is an inspiring documentary that tells the story of musician Thomas Muchimba Buttenschon and how he is using his music to help wipe out HIV/AIDS in his native Zambia. Born in 1985 and diagnosed with HIV/AIDS as an infant, Thomas' parents both had the disease and moved the family to Denmark where they could receive proper medical care. Although Thomas' parents both succumbed to the disease, Thomas has been healthy for decades thanks to an antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and has gone on to be a husband and father and have a successful music career. Tyler and Thomas join forces with the making of this documentary as Thomas hopes to use music as a means to encourage Zambians to get tested and get treatment. For more information on Thomas Muchimba and his efforts, check out the Muchimba Music Foundation website: https://www.muchimba.org/. Then writer/director JOAN CARR-WIGGIN is on hand to talk about her latest dramedy/rom-com, GETTING TO KNOW YOU. Joan is an extraordinary filmmaker and storyteller and someone whom I have had the privilege and pleasure to know for the past 12 years. She has an incredible grasp of the "everyday" and what makes it and "everyday" people special and in that, she finds her greatest stories and characters; the "what if" moments, the characters who you think will do one thing but do something else. Her films are grounded, emotionally tangible, with high production values and exemplary casting. GETTING TO KNOW YOU is no different. This is a story about Luke, a man returning to his small hometown for a high school class reunion (which doesn't go quite the way he envisioned) where he gets into an uncomfortable jam thanks to his old girlfriend, Kayla. Enter Abby Sorenson who just happens to be staying at the same hotel as Luke. Abby has left her husband and children at home in London while she makes quick arrangements for the funeral of her brother who just passed and to empty out his home. When Luke finds himself in a predicament with Kayla, Abby comes to his rescue and pretends to be his wife for what should only have been a few minutes, but turns into a couple of days as Kayla decides she wants Luke all these 25 years later but Luke now finds himself falling for the very married Abby. Listen as Joan talks about GETTING TO KNOW YOU from casting the wonderful Rupert Penry-Jones, Nastasha Little, and Rachel Blanchard to the supporting characters and importance of making them as full-bodied and three-dimensional as the main leads, reteaming with cinematographer Bruce Worrall, production design, delightful scoring by Kenneth Harrison and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Today in the Word Devotional

Paul was aware of what the future held for him, but still, he kept on going. The same was true of Jesus who told His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem to be killed and rise again on the third day, Simon Peter objected. In Matthew 16:22, Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke Him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” When Luke and his team learned that Paul would be arrested and handed over to the Gentiles in Jerusalem, they too were upset (vv. 11–12). Paul’s fate was revealed to them by the Holy Spirit during a week-long stopover at Tyre and confirmed by the prophetic message of Agabus in Caesarea (v. 11). Although verse 4 sounds as if it was the Holy Spirit telling Paul not to go to Jerusalem, it was the Spirit who initially directed Paul to make the journey (Acts 20:22). The Holy Spirit did not object to Paul’s trip. It was Paul’s friends who objected because of what the Spirit revealed about its outcome. When they realized that Paul, like Christ, was determined to follow through even at the cost of his life, they recognized that this was God’s will (v. 14). It did not take long before those who opposed the gospel of grace that Paul preached tried to kill him. They spread lies, saying Paul had brought Gentiles into the court of the temple where only Jews were allowed. They seized him, dragged him into the outer court of the temple precinct, and began to beat him to death. The commander of the Roman troops, stationed at the fortress adjacent to the temple, heard about the disturbance, saved Paul’s life by arresting him (v. 33). >> Sometimes what seems like misfortune is God’s way of furthering His plan. While today’s reading has a somber tone, it should be an encouragement for us to know that we can trust God with our future. Whatever happens today, remember that God has got your back!

Background of the Book of ACTS: 1. Who: Luke, a Gentile Physician who “writes with the compassion and warmth of a family doctor.” The “we” portions of Acts (16:1-17; 20:5-21:18, 27:1-28:16) subtly reveal that Luke was a traveling companion of Paul. Luke was with Paul during both of his Roman imprisonments as Paul’s “beloved physician” (Col. 4:14, Philemon 24, 2 Tim. 4:11), evidence of Luke’s loyalty even in the face of personal danger. Luke is the only Gentile contributor to the New Testament. Church tradition tells us that Luke was from Syrian Antioch, remained unmarried, and died at 84 years old. 2. When: Luke likely wrote during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, during the mid-to-late 60s. Luke’s abrupt ending that ends with Paul awaiting trial in Rome leads many to believe it was completed prior to Paul’s trial (AD 62). In addition, it gives no hint of the persecution under Nero (64), Paul’s death (68) or the destruction of Jerusalem (70). 3. Whom: Luke’s carefully written gospel was presented to “the most excellent Theophilus” (“friend of God”). The title indicates that he was a man of high social standing and likely was a man of means who paid the cost of publishing Luke/Acts so they would be available throughout the Gentile world. 4. What: Historical Narrative, as Luke begins where he left off in his gospel. The combined “2 volume set” of Luke and Acts makes up 28% of the entire New Testament, which makes Luke the most prolific author (2,138 verses to Paul’s 2,033). Luke writes in the most refined Greek in the New Testament. Acts traces the rapid expansion of the gospel, beginning in Jerusalem and spreading throughout the Roman Empire. Without Acts, the epistles would be difficult to understand, and the early history of the church would be a vague patchwork. Luke uses over 700 words not found in the other 25 NT books. He includes 80 geographical references and his precision in citing locations that was once challenged has now been verified by archaeological evidence. Luke also records 24 sermons and speeches in its 28 chapters. 5. WHY: “The Acts of the Holy Spirit” through the apostles traces the development of the body of Christ over its pivotal early years, from a primarily Jewish to predominately Gentile membership.

Background of the Gospel of LUKE: 1. Who: Luke, a Gentile Physician who “writes with the compassion and warmth of a family doctor” as he carefully documents the life of Jesus. The “we” portions of Acts (16:1-17; 20:5-21:18, 27:1-28:16) subtly reveal that Luke was a traveling companion of Paul. 2. When: Luke wasn’t an eyewitness of the events in his gospel, but he relied on the testimony of eyewitnesses and written sources (1:1-4). It’s highly likely that during Paul’s 2- year imprisonment in Caesarea Philippi that Luke gathered information from eyewitnesses for his gospel, especially from Mary, mother of Jesus. Luke likely wrote during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, during the late 60s. 3. Whom: Luke’s carefully written gospel was presented to “the most excellent Theophilus” (“friend of God”). The title indicates that he was a man of high social standing and likely was a man of means who paid the cost of publishing Luke/Acts so they would be available throughout the Gentile world. 4. What: Luke’s gospel is the longest book in the New Testament. The combined “2 volume set” of Luke and Acts makes up 28% of the entire New Testament, which makes Luke the most prolific author (2,138 verses to Paul’s 2,033). Luke writes in the most refined Greek in the New Testament. He translates Aramaic terms with Greek words and explains Jewish customs and geography for understanding. Luke’s most striking feature is his strong interest in people impacted by the ministry of Jesus, as he present Jesus as the true Savior of the whole world. Luke relates how the gospel impacts Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles, rich and poor, respected and despised, insiders and outsiders. 5. WHY: Luke clearly states his purpose in his prologue: “That you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught” (1:4). Luke wanted to create an accurate, chronological, and comprehensive account of the life of Jesus to strengthen the faith of believers and to bring saving faith to unbelievers. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate to the Romans that Christianity was not a political threat. For example, three times Luke records Pilate’s acknowledgement of Christ’s innocence (23:4, 14, 22).

When Luke and Josh talk about how to build and nurture relationships, they are, in large part, talking about how to build trust with customers. For this week’s Stay Paid guest, developing trust in relationships with clients and prospects begins with clearly communicating three value propositions that all clients want from their financial advisor—indeed, from every service professional with whom they work. Adam Holt, CEO and Founder of Asset-Map, says if you want to know how to build trust with customers, then demonstrate you: 1. Know what matters to them. 2. Understand their unique situation. 3. Provide them with options. You can’t tell a customer to trust you. You have to communicate with them in ways that prove you know, understand, and can provide what they want. Do that consistently, and you’ll build trust in your relationships with clients. It’s what Adam helps his clients do.   To learn how to generate more referrals and repeat business, visit: www.remindermedia.com Follow Luke Acree: https://www.instagram.com/lukeacree https://www.linkedin.com/in/lukeacree https://www.facebook.com/lukeacreeRM/ Follow ReminderMedia: https://twitter.com/remindermedia https://www.facebook.com/ReminderMedia https://www.instagram.com/remindermedia

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 1990 film The Witches based on the 1983 book of the same name starring Jasen Fisher, Mai Zetterling, Charlie Potter, Anjelica Huston, and Rowan Atkinson. A young boy named Luke is raised by his grandmother after losing his parents in a car accident. She tells him the warning signs on witches and what to look out for after she lost her best friend to one many years prior. When Luke and his grandmother check in on a hotel, they don't realize that they're in the middle of a gathering of witches who wish to get rid of all the children by buying all the sweet shops in England. Luke discovers their evil plan and turns into a mouse when caught by the witches. Luke, his grandmother, and another boy named Bruno work together to take down the witches before they accomplish their diabolical deed. When the movie premiered in theaters, it only made $15 million dollars in the box office while being critically acclaimed by critics. However, the film had brought controversy such as scaring kids and complaints from wiccans offended of portraying witches as harmful stereotypes. Another controversial event that occurred was when the original ending of the movie was changed for a more lighter and happier tone. Roald Dahl was so displeased with the decision that he left the project and removed his involvement with the film. To this day, The Witches has become a cult classic for kids who first saw the film and Roald Dahl fans. How well does the film hold up 30 years later? Listen and find out.

This one is pretty perplexing. Danielle from Puyallup has called to ask Fitz for help with her boyfriend Luke. She says they are both P1’s of the show, listening to Fitz for many years, but she is perturbed because lately Luke will change the station. And she has figured out why: he doesn’t like certain songs. When we drill down to diagnose the problem with Danielle, we figure out the songs are what we call “Boyfriend Country” – simply put, Luke hates Dan+Shay and all the other nice guys who sing nice songs about their nice girls. When Luke comes on, he admits it: he doesn’t like a lot of the newest songs because they are too “wimpy” and they also don’t have enough banjo, fiddle, or pedal steel. Fitz defends Country Music in all its forms, and tells Luke he needs to keep up with the times. But that’s all beside the point for Danielle who says the true measure of a P1 is that once you set that present, you never, ever take it off.

5. Problem kids, drunkards, traitors, and other people Jesus likes hanging out with.(Luke 5:12-39)Tears suddenly welled up in Celeste's eyes. I was shocked. Why was this confident, beautiful business woman crying? I had simply told her I thought she'd look just as beautiful if she let her hair go back to its natural color of red. My mind was racing. I'm the queen of accidentally insulting people, but I couldn't imagine how this insulted her. After a long awkward silence, Celeste smiled through tears which were now flowing freely. “I'm sorry. You must think I'm a nut!”“No. Honey, you cry if you need to. I'm sorry if I said something…”She wiped her tears and then said, “No. It's not you at all. It's just my past.”She went on to tell me about how much trouble her hair had caused her as a child. Her mother had died of a drug overdose when she was eight years old and her abusive dad had abandoned her. Her grandparents took her in for a few months, but her grandmother couldn't even be in the room with her without crying. While Celeste was grieving the loss of her mother, her grandmother very painfully pointed out how “that red hair is just like your father's. I can't even look at it. He stole my baby girl from me.”“What kind of shit is that to put on an 8-year-old girl?” Celeste questioned, the pain still raw and obvious in her voice.Celeste went on to say that her grandfather was a little better. He would smile and give her cookies. Her grandfather told her to keep to herself and maybe her grandmother would come around. But after just eight months, she found herself sitting in front of a social worker and being placed in foster care.“My new foster mom was OK. She tried I guess, but she didn't know what to do with me. I was so mean to her….and I had this thick mess of red hair that had become the reason I was unloved in this world.”Celeste laughed a little. “You wouldn't believe the hell I put that poor lady through over trying to get my hair brushed. Finally, I wore her down and she quit trying. So, insecure nine-year old, lily white, freckle-faced me went to school with a red afro that whole year... I didn't make a lot of friends.”Celeste went on to explain that throughout the rest of her childhood, her red hair was the cause of a lot of pain and insecurity for her. Worse than that, it was her excuse for not even trying to care about anything or anyone. She viewed herself as an ugly, unlovable redhead. She let people abuse her but she also abused plenty of people. People hurt her and she hurt people. It was how her world worked. She stared past me at her daughter playing in the lake. “She's the best thing that ever happened to me. I didn't want her and the only reason I didn't have an abortion was being pregnant felt like a way out of my effed up life.”When Celeste found out she was pregnant, she was 17 years old. Her foster parents had already told her they were going to kick her out when she turned 18. If she was “lucky,” her social worker might be able to work things out for her to stay with them an extra three months so she could graduate.Leaving her foster home early and going to a home for teen moms was when Celeste began to take care of herself for the first time.“It's funny…My roommate was studying to be a hairdresser. She just looked at me one night and said, ‘You know you don't have to be a redhead.' Something in me clicked. I didn't have to be any of the things I was. I desperately wanted to be different for my baby. I wanted to get off of drugs so my baby would not lose me the way I lost my mom.”And here we were, ten years later, sitting at a picnic table watching our kids splash each other in the lake. I'd been friends with her for a year and I had no idea how much pain she had been hiding. After she shared her story, I felt incredibly honored and she felt incredibly embarrassed.“Oh God!” she groaned. “I can't believe I shared all that with you. You must think I'm horrible.”Unfortunately, though Celeste was one of the strongest people I've ever met, she felt like she was too big of a mess for most religious people. She felt they'd shun her if they really knew what she was like. She recounted stories of being forced to go to Vacation Bible Schools as a child and her foster parents dropping her off at youth group meetings, hoping they'd “fix” her. She heard stories of Jesus and even believed in him, but she didn't like church.“In church, I still feel like the little girl with the red afro wondering why I don't fit in. People will be nice enough, but I know if they really saw me, they'd run from me.”The abuse and hurt in Celeste's life started from situations beyond her control. The rejection she felt from others early in her life shaped everything about her. Even as a great mom, wife, and successful business woman, she was desperately afraid of ever being all of the things that she had been called as a child.Unfortunately, Celeste was probably right about many of the people in my church (and I wish I had been louder about how wrong they were!), but Jesus could totally handle all of her hurt, her mistakes, heartache, fears, and current struggles. As she followed him, she began to find the healing she so desperately wanted. We lost touch with each other and I'm not sure if she ever learned to “fit in” with American church culture, but I know she is completely “in” God's kingdom. When Luke wrote his gospel, he was writing for ancient Roman Gentiles and others rejected by the strict religious elite. Remember, strict Jews shunned Gentiles so completely that they refused to enter their homes and they would literally walk to other side of the street to avoid contact with anyone they considered unclean. When you think about the extreme animosity between Jews and Gentiles, the fact that Luke, wrote this account of Jesus is crazy awesome. The fact that thousands and thousands of Gentiles followed Jesus is even crazier-awesomer. How in the world would a bunch of ancient Roman “Gentiles” lower their guard enough to follow a Jewish rabbi?Simple. Luke showed them what Jesus was like.If you've ever felt like Celeste, knowing you didn't fit in with the religious crowd, you should absolutely love, the stories of Luke 5:12-39. They are stories of outsiders and survivors who were completely shunned by the religious elite. Yet, completely accepted by Jesus. He shocked the religious elite by openly associating with the people they condemned. Jesus hung out with people on the outside of religion so much that he was constantly criticized for it. Matthew 11: 19 says Jesus was known as a “glutton, drunkard, and friend of sinners” I mean, how often do you think that shows up on a preacher's resume these days? Imagine: “I'm a pretty good preacher, but I'm mostly known for eating and drinking a lot plus I just love hanging out with sinners.” We can't even imagine it, because religion is all about not associating with the “out” crowd. The heart of religious attitudes remains the same today as it was back then. For many of the religious people of his day, the people Jesus associated with proved he wasn't from God. Religion said he wasn't worth following because of who he hung out with. I think who he hung out with is the very thing that makes him worth following. There weren't a lot of redheads like my friend Celeste, running around the ancient middle east. There was no foster care system. However, there were tons of people being shunned and abused because of suffering they had already endured. For example, people with skin diseases. The shunning people with skin diseases suffered was much more blatant than what Celeste experienced. But at the heart, the religious rejection of their worth was the same. The ancient Jewish rules for skin diseases encompassed anything from a long-lasting rash, to a severe infection, to leprosy. All of these skin conditions were lumped together and came with a pronouncement by a priest that the sufferer was “unclean.”The common belief that all suffering was the result of sin and therefore deserved was harsh for any survivor of that day, but it was especially harsh for people with skin diseases. They were shunned on every level. They were forced away from their families and had to live with other outcasts outside of their towns. When they walked around, they had to put their hand over their mouth and shout “unclean” so people would know to avoid them. “Clean” people wanted to avoid even breathing the same air as them. They were physically cut off from their community and considered separated from God because of their illness. They were told not even God cared about them.In our modern comfortable lives, it is hard to fully comprehend their world and what people with skin diseases went through. Most of the harsh rules were originally designed to protect the community from the spread of the disease. The problem was, when the rules about physical uncleanness were seen as condemnations of spiritual uncleanness. Rules meant to protect the community from spreading disease became rules used to shun and judge. Fear of skin diseases found an outlet in religious condemnation. “If I'm better than them, I won't suffer like them”. Blaming others for their suffering leads to all kinds of cruelty. Then and now, fear and blame strip away basic human compassion.Imagine the horror of going through suffering completely out of your control and being told it was your fault because of evil in you. Imagine being made to feel like your suffering was a sign of God rejecting you. That's how Celeste and people suffering with skin diseases were made to feel by religion.Jesus responded to our suffering differently. In Luke 5:12, “a man came along who was covered with leprosy.” (NIV). It is no surprise that the leper fell before Jesus with his face to the ground. This man approached Jesus with the same act of reverential recognition of Jesus' power that Peter had done earlier. He fell before Jesus and begged, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” vs.11 (NIV). It is interesting; he didn't simply say, “Please heal me.” He asked to be made clean. He saw himself as unclean. He accepted people's judgments of him.All of the hurt and rejection this man endured makes the following verse more beautiful:Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,' he said. ‘Be clean!' And immediately the leprosy left him.” vs. 12 (NIV).Let this scene soak in a minute. Jesus reached down and touched the unclean man. The law said this made Jesus unclean also. Even after the leper was cured, he was still considered unclean until a priest declared him clean. Jesus wasn't worried about the religious rules of who was clean and unclean. He cared about the man. He was walking around with all the power of God in him and he chose to stop and be identified with this man. Jesus never worried about unclean people making him unclean. Then Jesus ordered him, “Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” Luke 5:14 (NIV).The priests believed there was no way to be cured from a pronouncement of an unclean skin disease except through a miracle. They had no power to help. All they could do was judge the uncleanness and make sure the judgment against them was carried out. Jesus told the man who had been healed not to tell anyone about his healing except the priests. Jesus had already made the man clean, but he wanted the priests to see. The priests would have to declare that someone had come along with a power greater than theirs because, religion can only judge as unclean and shun. Jesus accepts, heals, and makes people clean. As the story continues, it gets even more crazy-awesome! In Luke 5:17-26, a bunch of Pharisees and teachers of the law came from all over to hear Jesus teach. A crowd of people gathered outside the house where Jesus was teaching. They were all trying to get in to see Jesus. Many in the crowd were suffering from illnesses and disabilities. The religious leaders were crowded around Jesus, debating minutiae of the law and pontificating pontificatable things, while people were literally dying to get past them to meet Jesus! One particularly badass group of friends was determined to get their friend to Jesus. While Jesus was teaching and answering questions, this group of friends was carrying their paralyzed friend to meet Jesus. When they got to the house where Jesus was, they realized they couldn't get through the crowd. So, they climbed up on the roof, dug a hole in it, and lowered their friend through. Now, back in the day, roofs were thatched and made out of straw and wood and covered with tiles. So, it wasn't impossible to just tear a hole in it, but it wasn't a nice thing either. The homeowner wasn't going, “Yeah that's cool. Just dig a hole in my roof. I'll patch that right up.” These dudes defied social conventions and went all out to get their friend healed. The coolest part of this story is what happened when they lowered the friend in front of Jesus. This whole group of religious leaders who believed that all suffering was based on sin and thus believed that they were closer to God and above everyone else, sat there debating with Jesus. Suddenly, a paralyzed man was lowered into the center of the room where the discussion was happening.I'm guessing all eyes were on Jesus and the paralyzed man. I feel like Jesus probably laughed when he saw this, ‘cause he saw the opportunity this was creating! Luke says that Jesus looked at the paralyzed man and said, “Your sins are forgiven.” Luke 5:20The religious leaders were SHOCKED and OFFENDED. They had the ability to recognize sin and they were super good at judging people, but they did not have any ability to do anything about it. Jesus was telling them what he was all about and how he was different from what they expected of a Messiah. He told the man that his sins were forgiven, but he didn't heal him. The man was still lying there paralyzed while shock and offense spread through the room.I'm sure Jesus masterfully let the awkwardness of the moment hang in the air while reality sunk in. Jesus had just claimed to forgive a man of his sins, which meant he was declaring himself equal to God. At the same time, he was separating the man's sins from his current condition. His paralysis stayed even after Jesus declared him forgiven.Jesus knew what was in everyone's hearts. He knew the buzz he had just created, so he asked:“Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, ‘Get up and walk'? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So, he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.'Immediately, he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.” vs. 22-25 (NIV).This is another of Jesus' responses that seems a little Yoda-ish on first glance. “Which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven, or get up and walk?”I'd probably have been like. “Uhhmmm, I dunno, ‘Get up and walk' has less syllables?!”What was Jesus getting at?Jesus was demonstrating the best news for survivors: Our struggles do not mean God is far from us! My friend Celeste was judged because of a whole lot of circumstances beyond her control. She responded to how others shamed her by rejecting people before they could reject her. But God never rejected her!Religion says our struggles are deserved because of character flaws and mistakes which led to God's displeasure with us. Jesus' message is different. Jesus said that God wants to freely forgive. His message separated our struggles from God's acceptance of us. Jesus accepted the paralyzed man in front of everyone. He declared him “forgiven” and “clean,” yet he remained paralyzed. If you aren't a survivor and you've somehow managed to live in a safe bubble right up until you read this book, or (more likely) if you have cleaned up your act; your life got better; and you think you deserve your easy life, being forgiven but not healed probably doesn't feel like good news to you. It probably feels like sucky news. But those of us living in the harsh world of reality know that life is really, really hard. Religion judges people whose struggles are worse than most. Jesus' interaction with this paralyzed man showed us that God doesn't judge the way religious people do.If you are like me, you are probably thinking, “Yeah but that paralyzed dude probably hadn't done all of the messed-up stuff I have done...I'm still not convinced that this applies to me…” If that's you, then hang on! You'll LOVE the next story. (Which is the craziest-awesomest!)In Luke 5:27-32, Jesus was walking along and he saw a tax collector named Levi (also known as Matthew) sitting at this tax booth. When Jesus asked Levi to follow him, Levi seems to have jumped at the opportunity because he “left everything and followed Jesus.” (Luke 5:28 NIV).The totally cool part about this story is the fact that Levi was a tax collector. Remember, they were literally considered the enemies of God who were not only siding with the occupying enemy, they were raising money for them. No one was considered more unredeemable and unclean than tax collectors, who basically flipped off the religious elite and gave a big “F you” to the whole system. Yeah. Jesus chose one of those guys to be his disciple! That is so freaking awesome!!! But Jesus didn't stop there…Luke 5:29 tells us that Levi had a huge banquet for Jesus where he invited his tax collector friends and some other “sinners.” Good church people might like to clean up how this party went, but let me just throw this out there: Everyone at this party was automatically considered “unclean” just by being in Levi's home. I don't know about you, but when I've been around a group of people who flipped off the religious establishment and said, “We're going to do our own thing,” we didn't sit around and work jigsaw puzzles. Just saying, this wasn't a PG group of people Levi was hanging out with. So, when Jesus went to this banquet, he once again irritated the peejeebers out of the religious elite. In ancient Israel, the wealthy people like Levi ate lavish meals in huge open dining areas almost like being outside. People could walk by and listen in on conversations. Poor people would come beg for leftovers. Everybody in the community knew who you ate with, and they totally judged you by it!As Levi was having his banquet, religious leaders observed and criticized Jesus. Shocked by Jesus' audacious disregard for religious propriety, they asked Jesus' disciples why Jesus was eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus was accepting these people while they were still messed up. (I mean thank goodness…'cause I for one still wouldn't be in if he didn't!)When he was questioned about his outrageous behavior, Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” vs. 31, 32 (NIV).This conversation was happening out in the open. Jesus basically called everybody at the party a sick sinner. It seems they weren't offended though. They all knew they were not following God's rules. They knew they were far from fitting in with the religious crowd. More than anything though, I think they also knew how much Jesus accepted them in their “sickness.”The religious leaders were appalled by Jesus' behavior. They said Jesus wasn't worth following because of his association with sinners, but they couldn't deny his wisdom. So, they questioned Jesus further. They asked why John the Baptist's disciples fasted and prayed, but Jesus' disciples went around eating and drinking. Jesus told them that the time to fast and pray would come later. Then he told them a strange parable:“No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.'” Luke 5:36-39 (NIV).At the time, no one could have fully grasped the meaning of this. But looking back, we can see that the old religious way of doing things would not mix with the new way Jesus taught. Just the stories from this chapter of Luke demonstrate how the old way of judging people would not work in the new kingdom Jesus ushered in.The fact that Celeste felt so judged in churches claiming to follow Jesus demonstrates the problems religion still has with trying to mix the old covenant (or testament) with the New way Jesus taught. You can't love and accept like Jesus did and add legalistic religious conditions. The choices are: Jesus' way of love which accepts, redeems, and heals, or the old way which judges and condemns based on our life circumstances and our ability to follow the rules. These two approaches do not mix. If legalism is working for you, you aren't going to be loving and accepting the way Jesus was. However, when you understand that Jesus wants to hang out with you while you are still messed up, you are changed by his acceptance. You find peace and hope in your mess and you aren't afraid to hang out with other messy people. You want to reach out to the Celestes in your world. You want to show them how loved they are when they hate how they look, when they are abandoned, when they lash out, and when they spiral out of control. You know acceptance isn't based on what they've done, but on how much God loves them (even when they stay messy and still struggle!)

"Because she saw your spirit. Your heart. Rey, some things are stronger than blood. Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi. Your destiny." When Luke says this to Rey, so much that had been left unsaid, is now revealed. Our eyes and hearts are opened wide. Finally, someone else, other than Anakin, is following their heart instead of their head, and it's being praised, not reprimanded. After all, Love is central to a Jedi's life, and they should be encouraged to love.  Mentions and News Follow our own Bala Tik sounding voice artist, Liam Howie @LunaticGrung Join the RetroZap Discord Server and interact with all the RetroZap content creators https://discord.gg/hrfQ3s Intro by the talented Vanessa Marshall - the voice of Hera in Star Wars Rebels. For the wonder of seeing Jesus

Deacon Jared RSS LUKE 19:1-10At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." I was very into the Lord of the Rings as a kid, long before most people even knew what it was. Only the real geeks read that stuff, those strange books about the dwarves, the elves, and the hobbits. And it felt a little odd when they finally made the books into a series of blockbuster movies, and suddenly most people, even those who never bothered to watch them, knew what a hobbit was. Those books, especially the main three, were never really children’s literature, but I think if found them so approachable when I was young because of the hobbits. As a child, it is easy to see yourself in their shoes. Well, in their furry feet – because hobbits don’t wear shoes.I remember reading in an interview with Tolkien that he got much of his inspiration for the hobbits – those pint-sized people who liked to eat, drink, and get into all kinds of mischief – from his own children. And as a fellow parent of four, I can see where he was coming from. I sometimes feel like I’ve been living in the Shire for the past 15 years. Those stories of Middle Earth are full of elven warriors, powerful princes, trolls, dwarves, dragons, and myriad other creatures ever more strange and dangerous. But none of those great warriors and princes are ultimately able to save Middle Earth. Rather all the machinations of these great and evil powers are ultimately undone by the work of this little, childlike race of hobbits. There is something very wonderful about that narrative, the small and the weak overcoming the large and powerful. And that’s likely why it’s a relatively common literary device. Think of the spider in Charlotte’s Web, the little tailor, jack and the beanstalk, the mouse and the lion; there is something that makes our hearts swell when we hear about the lowly, the innocent, the childlike, overcoming the great, the evil, and the powerful. The bible loves to use this device as well. We think immediately of the young David overcoming the giant Goliath; of Gideon’s small army standing up to the Midianites; we think of the slave-born Moses standing up to the Pharaoh. And because of this, I think when Zacchaeus is introduced to us in today’s story as being small in stature, we might be excused if we are a bit pre-disposed to recognize a potential protagonist. But other than single this note regarding his diminutive size, the initial description of Zacchaeus actually pushes us in the opposite direction. Zacchaeus is described as a chief tax collector and very wealthy. It was just one chapter earlier in the Gospel of Luke that Jesus had confronted the rich prince and had lamented to his disciples that it is harder for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for the wealthy to enter into the kingdom of heaven. So, sure, he’s a little guy. But there is a lot wrong with him.So, if we start with a bit of mixed image, the behavior of this rich and powerful little man doesn’t help clear it up. Because as we are introduced to Zacchaeus, he is scrambling around just trying to get a look at Jesus. We immediately ask ourselves what is this chief of the sinners doing trying to get a glimpse of Jesus? And then his behavior becomes even more inexplicable. When he can’t see, because the crowd is too tall, he scrambles up a nearby tree. Why would this wealthy man behave like this? And here’s where I’d like to suggest that Zacchaeus may share more than a little of the hobbits’ literary DNA. Luke describes Zacchaeus as mikros which was translated this morning as short, but it is exactly the same word Jesus uses when he instructs his disciples to “allow the littles ones to come unto me.” Luke is not saying Zacchaeus is a child, but I think his word choice here allows us to see something child-like in Zacchaeus’ behavior. After all, climbing trees is also a very childlike behavior. So, why is Zacchaeus climbing that tree? Why do children climb trees? They climb trees for no reason at all, right? They climb trees for the love of the tree, for the excitement of the height, and because the sky is always so much more beautiful when seen through the topmost branches of a good climbing tree. Kids climb trees for the wonder of what they might find. And that is exactly why Zacchaeus climbed his tree – for the wonder of seeing Jesus. He had nothing to ask of Jesus, he just wanted to see him. And it is this simple act, performed with a pure heart, that catches Jesus’ attention. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.Thus, out of all the people swarming Jesus that day as he came into Jericho, Jesus choose this man, this little Zacchaeus, this chief of sinners, to lodge with. And notice Jesus doesn’t ask if it’s okay, he demands a place to stay. Jesus speaks to Zacchaeus like a parent would to his child, or like a lord to his servant – “Get down here immediately! I will be staying in your house today.” And Zacchaeus did not demand to be recognized as the powerful man that he was. He was not offended. Instead Zacchaeus responded just like a child, like a servant. He scrambles down the tree just as he was told and receives Jesus into his home with joy. This story is the last one Luke tells before he tells us of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem. Jerusalem will also welcome Jesus with great joy, receive him as their king. But that joy will not remain for long as Jerusalem and those who are in power there turn against their Lord and ultimately shout, “Crucify him!” Even here in Jericho we see foreshadowing of humanity’s looming betrayal. Luke tells us that, “when they saw this they all murmured, ‘He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.’”But if we suspect that Zacchaeus may also be offering a superficial reception, the story shows us right away that this is not the case. Jesus was not mistaken when he had recognized great potential in Zacchaeus. Almost as if to prove the murmurers wrong, Zacchaeus immediately proclaims his repentance for all he has ever done. And this is not a lip service repentance, but the real deal. In front of all, Zacchaeus leaves everything behind.“Wait!” the bean counters among you are saying. I was paying attention! He only gave half of his stuff away. And if that is what you heard, you are listening with modern ears. And I’ll admit that I heard it that way until I was preparing for today’s sermon. And I ran into many sermons trying to figure out this dilemma, of why Jesus tells the rich prince to give away everything and then seems so pleased when Zacchaeus gives away half. So don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Today being a tax collector is a legitimate occupation. You can work for the IRS and make a decent wage without stealing from anyone. It’s like being an accountant. There is nothing inherently sinful about being a tax collector. But when you start to read pre-modern sources, they have a very different view of tax collecting. Tax collectors were given a territory and an amount by their lord. They then went household to household collecting as much as they could. The only way a tax collector earned money was by collecting more than he needed. So by ancient standards, any money Zacchaeus had, and certainly any wealth he had accumulated, was considered ill-gotten gain. St. Theophylact, writing in the 11th century, reflects this older understanding when he writes: “Publicans get their livelihood from the tears of the poor.” So when these readers hear Zacchaeus offer to pay back four times what he had stolen, they immediately realize that he is offering to pay back his entire estate four times over. The other detail worth noting is that when Zacchaeus is offering to pay back at a rate of four-to-one, he is intentionally citing the Old Testament law. For instance, in Exodus, if you were caught stealing one of your neighbor’s sheep, you owed him four sheep in return. So what we should also recognize in this proclamation is a two-step declaration. Zacchaeus is both proclaiming his intention to fulfill the law of Moses by paying back anyone he cheated four times over. And then he is also recognizing the law of Christ, in fact placing it first, by taking half his estate and giving it to the poor.St. Theophylact describes it this way, “Even if we consider this with exactness, we will see how he has nothing left of his estate. For he gives half of his estate to the poor, and only half remains with him. Of this remaining half, he again gives four times to those he offended. Therefore, if the life of this elder of the tax collectors consisted of untruths, and he returns four times for everything that he acquired by untruth, then look how he lost everything. In this respect, he turns out to be philosophically above the Law, a disciple of the Gospel, since he loved his neighbor more than himself.”This promise to give away his entire estate four times over was not, of course, the work of a moment. This would be the work of a lifetime. And it was. Indeed, the Church tells us that Zacchaeus went on to be a disciple, an apostolic traveling companion of Peter, and eventually bishop of Caesarea in Palestine. This is doubtless why his name is remembered by the Church, and that of the rich prince is long forgotten.I think this is the point. When Luke tells the story of the rich prince in chapter 18 and then Zacchaeus in chapter 19, I think it is so we might compare the two. See how the wealthy prince approaches Jesus in an attempt to justify himself. And how different he is from Zacchaeus, who approached Jesus just to see Jesus! The prince tells us that he has kept the law from his youth up, but when Jesus tells him that to inherit the heavenly kingdom he must give all that he has to the poor, the rich prince leaves sorrowful because he finds this task too much to bear. But Zacchaeus, that miraculous Zacchaeus, even though he had flaunted the law his entire life, chooses in a moment to abandon all without a single instruction from Christ. Luke begins this literary diptych by making it absolutely clear that the burden of wealth can make it nearly impossible for the rich to inherit the kingdom of heaven, and then he concludes it by showing us that nothing – absolutely nothing – is impossible with God!St. John Chrysostum has a very descriptive passage talking about how Zacchaeus prepares for Jesus’ visit. I think it will help us figure out what we are to make of this story. If you’re like me, you don’t spend your days worrying about what to do with your overabundant wealth. But Chrysostum makes this story pertinent to all of us when he writes: “Zacchaeus did not run to his neighbors asking to borrow curtains, and extra seats, and chairs made of ivory, he didn’t bring out luxurious hangings from his closets; but instead he adorned his home with adornments suitable to Christ. With what? Giving half his goods to the poor and restoring fourfold to those he had robbed. In this way let us too adorn our houses, so that Christ may enter into us also. These acts are the fair curtains wrought in heaven, they are woven there. And where these curtains are, there also is the King of Heaven.”For St. John Chrysostum, we must prepare for Jesus as if he is coming to our house today, for indeed he already stands at the door knocking. Have you set a place for him? Readied his room? He’s not concerned with the age of your couch or the size of your TV or the quality of your food. None of these things are how he will judge you or your home. He is inviting you to join him for a spiritual banquet. And Zacchaeus shows us just how to prepare for such a feast. Acts of charity, mercy, and justice are the decorations that Jesus is hoping to see laid out on our table and adorning the walls of our hearts. It is the contrite heart that is the sacrifice acceptable to God.Are these the items we have prepared? Or are we secretly hoping to have our cake and eat it too, to have pleasure on this earth and in heaven as well? This is not the feast Jesus is hoping to find, it is just the opposite – “He who saves their own life,” Jesus taught, “will lose it; while they who lose their life for my sake, will gain it.” And it is with this question that I will leave you. Are we going to be like the rich prince, keeping the law in hopes that the Lord will in the end allow us to keep our lives? Or will we be like the little Zacchaeus? Will we be brave enough to offer up the entirety of our heart and our soul and our mind to our neighbors, just as if it is to our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be all glory, honor, and worship forever. Amen. Permalink

In his first solo full-length episode, Luke shares some key insights into how he helps his clients reduce their levels of pain and inflammation naturally. During this episode, he shares the first 4 strategies, and the next 4 will be covered in Part 2 (8 strategies total).  Show Notes One of the biggest frustrations in medicine these days is that people feel like they’re being “farmed out” to multiple specialists for their various conditions, and no one is in charge of finding the underlying, root cause of the problem. For example, you might see a GI specialist for your stomach issues, an Endocrinologist for your Diabetes, and a Rheumatologist for your joint pain. But what if the underlying issue with these conditions was simply too much systemic inflammation and an overactive immune system? Wouldn’t it make perfect sense to reduce your level of information, with the hope that it would have a positive impact on every aspect of your health? Is that too much to hope for? Luke starts off this episode by sharing his background with autoimmune disease, which started when he was diagnosed with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) at the age of 21. When Luke and his wife wanted to start a family, the side effects of his medications became more of a consideration, as they could affect the developing child.  After that point, Luke started actively looking for ways to improve his health naturally, with the ultimate goal of reducing his dependence on heavy-duty medications.  Over the last 6-7 years, he’s acquired an array of information related to natural medicine, and he shares 4 strategies in this episode (Luke will share 4 more strategies on Part 2 of this topic) Strategy #1: Eat fewer carbs and sugars. When it comes to the types of food you eat, there are only 3 basic categories: carbohydrates, protein and fat. These 3 are referred to as “macro-nutrients”. One of the best ways to reduce your level of inflammation is to decrease the amount of sugars and simple carbs you ingest, while favoring high quality proteins and fats instead. Note: this does NOT mean you’re cutting calories. Rather, you’re replacing low-quality carbs for higher-quality options. Strategy #2: Eliminate food sensitivities and triggers. Although few people have food allergies, most people will have a handful of foods that they’re sensitive to. Figuring out which foods you’re sensitive to can be tricky, as testing isn’t always that helpful or accurate. However, if you pay attention to what you eat, you’ll likely be able to pinpoint a couple foods that don’t agree with your system (i.e. they make you feel fatigued, increase your joint pain, or upset your stomach). Identifying and eliminating these foods/triggers is an important way you can reduce the inflammation in your body. Common food sensitivities include: gluten, other grains, dairy, eggs, nuts and alcohol.  Strategy #3: Decrease your toxic load. Now more than ever, we’re exposed to a higher level of toxic chemicals on a daily basis, which has a negative effect on our immune systems. Reducing your exposure to these toxic chemicals is an integral part of reducing the stress on your immune system, which will help lower your inflammation. One of the best ways to reduce your toxic exposure is to avoid eating foods with high levels of pesticides, or replacing these “conventional” items with “organic” ones. The “Dirty Dozen” is a list of the top 12 foods with the highest levels of residual pesticides. This is a great place to start! Other good examples of chemicals to reduce/eliminate include: lawn/garden chemicals (such as Roundup) and various chemicals in other household items and beauty supplies (cleaning solutions, shampoo, other hair care products and makeup).  Strategy #4: More probiotics! If you ever work with a physician who specializes in natural health, such as a Naturopath, many of them will tell you that your health starts with “healing your gut”. And while we don’t understand all the intricacies of the bacteria that live in our gut, most natural physicians will tell you that ingesting probiotics is essential to your gut health. This includes eating fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, yogurt (dairy-free if possible!), kimchi and other fermented veggies. There are also probiotic drinks, such as kombucha, as well as probiotic supplements. Part 2 of this topic will be available soon and will share 4 additional strategies to reduce your level of pain and inflammation. I hope that you find these tips valuable and that they help you live an active life! If you have questions or comments, please feel free to email me at Luke@GordonPhysicalTherapy.com. As this week’s episode with Coach Sam and special guest, Luke Kayyem unfolds, it is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. It confirms the existence of miracles and a higher power, that each of us has a divine purpose, and that in the depths of our darkest pit there is a light shining on the life we are meant to live and the person we are meant to become. Parable #1: Phantom Dad Luke is an only child, was born to his mother when she was 43 years old and grew up without a father. “My dad was a phantom.” When Luke was old enough to speak, he asked his mother where his father was. “He’s got some problems & issues.” While in the seventh grade, Luke’s father actually reached out to him from prison and began writing him letters, promising Luke that when he got out on January 1st, he would return and become the father he was missing in his life. That day came and went until finally his mother told Luke, “He’s not coming.” QUESTION Did you have a phantom dad? Are you that phantom dad?   Parable #2: Burning It All Down After receiving that news, Luke began burning his young life down. He partied, stole, joined a gang, and sold drugs. “Thank goodness the other side of the coin was sports and a mom who did give a shit and who was there for me.” But the damage that he did during grades 8-12 was irreversible. “I did some really dumb, dark shit.” And from the ages of 20-25, Luke did whatever he could to try to forget it all. At that point in his life, Luke questioned if there was even a purpose to his life, other than his mother. He had no real goals or aspirations aside from “make some money, spend some money, party and drink.” One Saturday afternoon in June 2015, Luke went to see his mom. Life would take a sharp left turn that day which become one of the darkest moments in his life. “The one person in the world that’s ever believed in me is gone…” QUESTION How have you burned down your life?   Parable #3: The Dark Years Two hours after losing his mom, Luke bought all the alcohol he could find. Drinking became a way for him to forget everything. “I got so fucked up during the funeral that I can’t even tell you what I said.” Business-wise, things were going really well for Luke. But he looked like he was 50 years old because he was drinking, eating like shit, and making terrible choices. At this point, Luke decided that a move to Hawaii with his 20 person entourage would solve all of his problems. A year later, after being told ‘fuck you, I never want to talk to you again’ from his girlfriend, Luke returned to California. QUESTION What form of sedation to you consistently turn to? Parable #4: Twist of Fate Here he was, back where he started as a trainer when he was 19. One of his buddies had invited him to Lake Tahoe for New Year’s and within an hour of his arrival, he ran into his ex-girlfriend. “The one person who believed in me and still does to this day more than anybody was this queen whom I had not treated well for a very long time.” They didn’t leave the hotel for three days. “At 24, she’s a high-level executive in real estate, she’s crushing it in San Francisco, and wants nothing to do with this ass-hole.” Two weeks later while sitting at a bar, he gets a phone call, “I’m pregnant.” In her eyes, Luke is “an alcoholic, you’ve slept with all my friends, you’re a piece of shit.” He promised her if she would trust and believe in him, he would never make another “shitty fucking decision” again. As the story continues, time would tell if Luke was able to keep that promise and how life would unfold for them. QUESTION How are you seeing yourself in Luke’s story?   Parable #5: Letting Go During his life, Luke had turned his back on religion. It wasn’t until he entered the gates of Warrior Week where he was introduced to this idea of Meditation as being something beyond an app on his phone. “Finding that reconnection to this power or this third eye was the biggest thing I was missing.” His big a-hah moment during the interview with Sam revealed to Luke that he had been using fitness a tool of sedation. “Just nine months ago, I was running away from my missing father and the death of my mom. Those two weights were like carrying around 100 lb sandbags on each shoulder.” It took the power of the brotherhood, the coaches and Warrior Week to allow Luke to express the demons he had been carrying around his whole life. QUESTION How have you felt as you’ve let go of the heavy weights you’ve been shouldering your entire life?   Parables from the Pit: “Men don’t come to Warrior Week for transformation; they come to Warrior Week to find themselves; to find who they’ve always been and who they’ve always known themselves to be.” —Sam Falsafi “My gap is not my client’s gap, and it’s not my son’s gap.” -Luke Kayyem

This unique 'Bootleg Broadcast' episode was recorded live from an undisclosed location in Malibu in a room full of Life Stylist Podcast listeners, and some of LA's most fascinating and talented people – including Eli Block, Master Stroker and lead Orgasmic Meditation (OM) instructor at OneTaste. We skip the story of how Eli got into this meditative practice – you can check out my first conversation with Eli back in episode 10 to learn all about that – and dive deep into the nitty-gritty of how Orgasmic Meditation works and who it helps. Our modern sexual practice is hyper-masculine and extremely goal-driven.  It usually ends up following transactional rules, like commerce. I do this for you, then you do that for me, etc. But do you want to approach intimacy the same way you approach buying a sandwich? It’s not very sexy (and not very zen). Instead, perhaps we can explore a more expansive understanding of intimacy? Interested in aligning your understanding of gender, sexuality, and orgasm with nature? Want to develop a sexual practice with your partner that doesn’t solely focus on exchanging pleasure? Then you might consider a ride on the OM train.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: What exactly Orgasmic Meditation is & how you can practice it with your partner Why this process involves stroking the clitoris with no intended goal Our culture has a hyper-masculine definition for a lot of things related to relationships – but we could all benefit from learning more feminine definitions The skewed commerce of pleasure What makes a hot makeout When Luke accidentally sent his father some super nasty porn in the mail for Christmas Why there is no “nutritional value” to porn How your rigid sexual preferences can mean the undoing of your pleasure The wildly different reasons different people have sex Why your sexual skill doesn’t matter if a woman doesn’t want to enjoy what you’re doing OM as a protocol for increasing sensitivity & bringing orgasm to the next level You can OM however you want to, with whomever you want to – that’s why it’s a practice! Why it’s almost impossible to do anything else if you aren’t experiencing human connection Getting down on your knees & putting the work in to learn how a clitoris operates The benefits of practicing OM, for men and women Why one OM session doesn’t mean you’re about to have sex (although it can make sex a lot better if you feel the electricity) Why sex is an energy debit & OM is an energy credit   More about this episode.   THIS SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Athletic Greens. 11 supplements in 1! When Luke and Evan were in college a fairly common topic of conversation was how many children (typically in the six-year-old range) one might be able to defeat in a no-holds-barred all-out brawl. Tusks, claws, and superhuman agility not withstanding, this week the gang basically have the perfect setup to definitively answer resolve the question. Their opting not to participate in this thought experiment is far from the only disappointment this week. For one, both co-hosts thought this episode would be edited and uploaded much earlier, but alas, at the time of this writing both remain tragically awake. Another is a shortcoming of Luke's that may keep him from every becoming a successful foley artist.

Continuing to talk about the latest Star Wars film at length, going through the storyline and giving my thoughts on the characters, events and the audience backlash. Transcript available below. Episode page: https://wp.me/p4IuUx-87j  Transcript (95% complete) OK, so if you check the length of this episode you’ll see it’s more than 2 hours long - Yes, this is definitely the longest episode of LEP I’ve ever done! And this is part 2 of a double episode. If you put parts 1 and 2 together that adds up to nearly 3.5 hours of me talking about Star Wars The Last Jedi. Added to that, the next episode will also be about Star Wars - and that will be a conversation between my dad, my brother and me. So, this has become something of a Star Wars marathon on Luke’s English Podcast. Those of you who are fans of Star Wars will probably be happy about that! Those of you who aren’t interested in Star Wars, or if you just think this film completely sucks - of course you could just skip this episode - I’ll be uploading more non-Star Wars episodes soon, I promise. OK, so strap in then, let’s embark on part 2 of this epic Star Wars themed episode. Hi, welcome back to the podcast. This is part 2 of a double episode I’m doing about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In this one I’m going to continue going through the storyline of the film and giving my thoughts and feelings about the characters and events. I thought I’d be able to do all of this in one episode but I have got a bit carried away so I’ve split it into 2 parts. You should listen to part 1 before listening to this... If you’re not a fan of Star Wars you could just skip this one. I’m recording it really for the people who’ve seen the film. Spoiler alert - I’m revealing lots of details about the film, so you should wait until you have seen the film before you listen to this. There is a script for most of what I’m saying on the episode page on my website so you can read along while listening, or just check for certain words and phrases that you’ll hear me use. If you’re listening in the LEP app, just click the link for the episdoe page in the episode description - that will allow you to read the script while you’re listening. After this episode there will be another one about Star Wars - and that will be a chat with my brother and my Dad that I recorded just after we all saw the film together about a week ago. I realise I’m devoting quite a lot of podcast time to this new film - but I just really enjoy talking about it right at this moment and as far as I’m concerned that’s enough of a reason for me to do this on the podcast. Don’t worry, I won’t be doing Star Wars forever of course and we’ll get back to other topics and themes on the podcast soon. OK then, so I expect the ones still listening to this are the Star Wars fans - so, let’s now continue where I left off. I was describing that moment when General Leia gets blasted into space when the bridge of her ship gets blown up. I said that this is quite a controversial scene... I admit that this scene is weird and we’ve never seen this before in a Star Wars film, but I really don’t think it’s as bad or ridiculous as some people think. So, Leia is hanging in space in zero gravity after the bridge of her ship has been blown up. She’s hanging in zero gravity. Apparently now we have zero gravity in space. Now - there is no consistency regarding the science in these films as we’ve seen already many times. This is not science fiction - there doesn’t need to be consistent, logical physics. This is a film series in which there are explosions in space, a huge planet sized space station that blows things up with lazers and a mystical force that allows people to control minds, lift objects and even project lightning from their fingers. In this particular scene. The science serves the characters, the action and the plot, and it can be bent this way and that. We are supposed to just suspend our disbelief and go with the vague rules of this universe. In this case, in this scene, there is zero gravity in space and so Leia is just hanging there. It seems that her skin maybe beginning to freeze, which is what would happen in space I suppose. She looks dead. But then her fingers twitch and her eyelids open. When I saw this I immediately thought - she’s using the force to keep herself alive. It’s a survival thing. Then she extends her arm and floats back towards the ship. Some people say she flies and they get very angry and upset saying “The force doesn’t let you fly”. Well - first of all, she’s not flying - she’s floating through zero gravity. It wouldn’t require much force power to do that, right? There’s no atmosphere or gravity so it just requires a little bit of force power to pull herself back to the ship. Also, we know that Leia is force sensitive but up until this point her power has just been to communicate with Luke through the force, to feel and sense things through the force and perhaps the suggestion that she’s been influencing events through the force for a while - like perhaps helping that bomber in the opening battle sequence, and influencing Kylo’s decision not to attack the fleet and so on. So she has the force but she’s never used it to her full potential. It’s not hard to imagine that in a crucial moment like this that she’d be capable of keeping herself alive and pulling herself back to the ship through zero gravity. We see this slightly odd, yet strangely beautiful image of Leia floating through space in the middle of a battle. It’s eerie and we’ve never seen anything like this before. Again, a lot of people hate this scene, but I think they’re being a bit hysterical. This has never happened before - it’s not consistent! Yep, well a lot of people complained about episode 7 because it contained nothing new. This is something new and it’s not completely far fetched. She’s not flying, she’s floating in zero gravity. Leia can’t fly ok? She’s not superwoman. It’s zero gravity. She’s just floating. So, I’m fine with this scene, but only fine with it. They could have done this differently. Other criticisms of this scene include the fact that Leia uses the force here just to save herself, other characters die and she could have saved them. Well, let’s face it - this film is all about breaking away from the old stuff and that means that some of the old characters have to die, and that includes someone like Admiral Akhbar- the guy who looks like a fish. I’m not that bothered that Akbar is gone. I liked him - I had the Admiral Akbar toy when I was a child, but it’s fine - we can let him go. These are tragic events. But maybe she could have used the force differently - like perhaps she could have somehow contained the explosion and held the bridge together - but that surely would have taken much more force strength and ability. I reckon keeping herself alive and then floating back to the ship is consistent with the fact that she’s never fully trained or developed her force abilities. This moment is also weird and spooky considering the fact that we all know that Carrie Fisher died just after making this film. Here in the film we see her character apparently die, but then her eyes open and she makes a miraculous recovery. I find this spooky and odd, but it doesn’t make me angry or make me want to throw my toys out of the pram and weep for the death of Star Wars. That’s a bit hysterical. Also, there’s a sense that in the negative reaction to this scene (and to quite a lot of the rest of the film) there’s a bit of sexism going on. Perhaps people just don’t like the idea of a woman flying. I know one person in particular who expressed this opinion - like “What, women can fly now?” “Women can do anything in movies now - this is ridiculous - it’s just rampant feminism”. Again, that seems like a slightly hysterical reaction. How many times have we seen flying men in movies? How many times are male heroes celebrated by seeing them fly through the air? Tons of times. Superman, Batman (alright he doesn’t fly but almost) Iron Man, Spiderman, Thor and tons of others. Nobody complains about flying men, it happens all the time and it’s not going to stop happening. Then we get one flying woman (who isn’t even flying) and some people throw their toys out of the pram and start complaining about rampant feminism. It’s not the end of the world. Some people might say - but it’s not consistent with the films. I’d say - yes it is consistent - she’s using her latent force abilities to briefly preserve her life and to pull herself back to the ship. You might disagree with me on this one - because it’s a really divisive moment in the film and I think a lot of people just couldn’t handle it and this was the moment when they just gave up on the film. If that’s you - write your thoughts in the comment section. What exactly is wrong with this moment? Put your thoughts into words. I’ve given you my point of view, why not give me yours? So, Leia gets back to the ship and is in a coma. She’s replaced by Vice Admiral Holdo. Ahch-To - Luke & Rey Words I used to describe Luke Skywalker: grisled haggard he looks like a wizened old hermit Luke chucks the lightsaber away. I was really shocked - gobsmacked. My jaw dropped at this moment. I was expecting him to refuse the lightsaber but I didn’t expect him to do that, but I went with it. I was shocked but I went with it. This is another one of those moments that’s a deal breaker for a lot of people. Some people see Luke throw the light sabre over his shoulder and they find it to be a fundamental problem. I can understand that. I think it seems a bit dismissive and casual, but this is where Luke is as a character in the story. He has been on this island for god knows how long and he’s utterly lost faith in the Jedi and in the so-called myth of Luke Skywalker. He doesn’t believe in these symbols any more and he has no time for people who expect him to live up to the legend of Luke Skywalker and that’s because at one point he believed in his own legend himself and as a result of that he thought he could do more than he could and this ended in complete failure. He couldn’t live up to all the expectations that he even had of himself. Some people say this is not consistent with Luke’s character, but I say - why not? Why can’t Luke have gone in this direction in the 30 years since Return of the Jedi? I found it really interesting that Luke had undergone such dramatic and traumatic changes since episode 6. Luke’s character in this film is about learning from failure, about being fallible, about struggling with expectations, about the legacy of the Jedi, about the heavy burden that is being the last jedi. In this film they could have made Luke a massively powerful hero who takes on the First Order armed only with his laser sword, but instead they went for a more complex study of a man who has failed, isolated himself and then slowly comes to terms with what it means to be a myth and how he can use this to do powerful things. Rey hangs around but Luke refuses to talk to her. We get some scenes which show Luke’s weird and eccentric lifestyle on the island. He fishes for massive fish in the sea, he lives among the porgs, he even drinks milk from the breast of some kind of weird sea mammal. Not directly from the breast, but he fills a flask with green milk that he gets from the breast of a weird creature that looks a bit like a walrus or something. He then drinks the milk and it drips down his beard, and he stares at Rey while doing this, looking pleased with himself. He’s being purposefully disgusting, and Rey thinks it’s weird. The green milk scene is another controversial one - controversial meaning that it has split opinions. Some people say this kind of thing has no place in Star Wars and that the humour didn’t really work. Personally I was fine with it. Both times I saw this in the cinema I was one of the only ones laughing at this moment. I don’t mind a bit of weird humour and I think Star Wars has always featured this kind of thing. For example - Jabba The Hutt is a weird creepy slug which licks its slimy lips in a really creepy way when looking at female characters, and there are plenty of other weird moments in the original trilogy. None of them are as blatant as this, but it’s not a complete departure from the world of Star Wars in my opinion. And just personally, I found it really funny. I also thought that this was Luke testing Rey a bit, in a similar way to how Yoda tested Luke in The Empire Strikes Back. When Luke first arrives on Degobah to meet Yoda (and he doesn’t know what Yoda looks like) Yoda meets him and makes him think he’s just a weird and annoying little creature. He pretends to fight with R2D2, steals Luke’s food and seems totally eccentric and strange. It’s only later that Yoda reveals himself to be a great master. It’s as if he needed to show Luke that you shouldn’t expect heroes to look like heroes and that true heroism is in your actions not in your appearance. Also this is a trope in a lot of kung fu movies from the 70s. The kung fu master appears as a sort of crazy fool who tests the patience of the main apprentice, giving him lots of annoying tests - and secretly he’s training the apprentice without him realising it. I like Luke’s grumpy, weird side in this and I found it to be a pleasant surprise. Anyway, Rey tries unsuccessfully to persuade Luke to join the Resistance and Luke hides in his cabin. Chewie smashes the door in. Luke finds out that Han is dead. This doesn’t change his mind, but maybe a little bit. He visits the Milennium Falcon - this is a big nostalgia moment. The first time we’ve seen Luke on the Falcon since Episode 5 maybe. He finds R2D2 and the moment they reunite is pretty amazing. Luke removes his hood in order to see him and it reminded me of when Obiwan removed his hood to look at R2D2 in Episode 4. Them reuniting made me well up...! I’m not ashamed to admit it. R2 is so important to Luke’s whole journey. He’s the whole reason he ended up on this adventure in the first place. R2 seems to try and persuade Luke to join the Resistance but Luke says “no way”. R2’s response is brilliant. He just plays the hologram of Princess Leia from Episode 4. Luke says “that was a cheap move” or something - and it’s a bit true, this is a pretty cheap way for R2 to persuade Luke, but also a fairly cheap way for the film to make any Star Wars fan feel emotional. R2D2 goes straight for the jugular (vein). This was always one of the most magical moments in the original film. When he was a frustrated farmboy dreaming of having adventures, this hologram of a beautiful princess asking for help completely captured his imagination and catapulted him on this journey into adventure, heroism, the force and self-discovery. The function of it here is that it brings Luke one step further towards remembering who he was and it is a stark contrast to who he has become now. But he’s still committed to the fact that he can’t be involved because he’s convinced that he’ll do more harm than good. In fact Luke has cut himself off from the force completely. He’s lost faith in the Jedi order. But you get the sense that he’s not a lost cause. He acts like he’s definitely against the idea of coming back, but we see that he is quite curious about Rey and there is still a spark of the old Luke Skywalker in there. At one point Rey seems to be called to a big old tree on the island, which I think is the original Jedi temple - or a force tree - I’m not sure of it’s significance completely but I expect it is mentioned in one of the books or something. The tree also houses the sacred Jedi texts. Rey seems drawn to this place and Luke notices this and follows her from a distance. That’s when he becomes curious about Rey - when he notices that she’s been drawn to this significant place and there’s an interesting exchange there where we see that Rey is confused and doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t understand how she has her force sensitivity and who her parents are (she’s feeling a bit force sensitive). She’s desperately looking for answers to the questions of her identity while also trying to get Luke to come and help the Resistance. She seems lost and is desperate for guidance. No idea of how the time works here - all this is going on while the Resistance are battling against time up in space somewhere. Perhaps Ach-To runs on different time cycles. God knows. I don’t think it matters that much. Luke finally agrees to train Rey a bit. “Tomorrow at dawn - 3 lessons”. Again this is like a kung fu movie or a samurai movie or something, and that is really cool. 3 lessons about the Jedi and why they have to end. All the while, Rey and Kylo keep having weird force visions in which they are connected and they chat. It’s a bit like secret Skype or something. ForceTime. She berates him for killing Han Solo and says he’s a monster. He makes fun of the fact that she is looking for parental figures everywhere. They grow strangely close, mainly because they’re in similar situations. She’s desperate for guidance. He’s curious about her force abilities, and perhaps is working out if she is an enemy or perhaps a potential ally. They both are alienated from their so-called mentors. It’s weird and I didn’t know which way this would go. I expected that they’d join forces somehow and fight against both Snoke and Luke Skywalker, but I didn’t believe Luke Skywalker would be a real antagonist. Like I said before - there’s nothing like watching a Star Wars film when you don’t know what is going to happen next. Skywalker gives Rey some lessons in the force, but his intention is to break down her misconceptions about what it is, and what the Jedi really are. I could have had more of this to be honest, but then again in the original trilogy there wasn’t much detail about the force either. With the force I think the more you explain it, the less interesting it becomes. In The Phantom Menace there were these things called midiclorians, which are living organisms that actually carry the force - and it was possible to measure, scientifically, how much force a person had based on their midichlorian count - and because this is physical that this could be genetic and handed down through family connections. But midichloreans were never spoken of again because they took the magic out of the force. The version of the force we have here is back to how it was in Episode 4 - a mystical energy that binds the galaxy together. Rey doesn’t understand the force at all - thinking it’s just about controlling people’s thoughts and about moving rocks. This is the childish version of the force. Skywalker tells her it’s a lot more than that, giving a similar version that Obiwan gave to him in episode 4 - that it’s a neutral natural power that exists in the balance between everything. There are some funny moments where Luke makes fun of her and the way she misunderstands the nature of the force. Again, I’m not bothered by the jokey bits because this is Star Wars not Batman The Dark Knight. One funny moment is when he tells her to ‘reach out’ and she takes it literally. He means that she should reach out with her feelings, but she reaches out with her arm and he tickles it with a piece of grass saying “can you feel that? That’s the force!” and then he slaps her hand and says “that’s not how the force works” or something. Again, this reminds me of training sequences from kung fu movies which have some humour in them and involve the pupil getting it wrong and the master teasing them. Then Rey does reach out to the force with her feelings and Luke gives her a little lesson in what it is, and how to connect with it. He’s shocked that she immediately gets pulled towards the dark side, which is represented by a weird dark cave under the island. The rock under her cracks and she has a weird vision of being covered in water. Luke is shocked that Rey didn’t resist the dark side and he refuses to train her any more because the last time this happened it all went horribly wrong. He also attempts to explain to Rey how he has lost faith in the Jedi, how they were wrong and arrogant in assuming that they owned the force and how their legacy is failure. In the prequels the Jedi were blinded by their own arrogance - they didn’t see how a powerful sith was taking control of the senate right under their noses. Lack of vision etc. Again - more hubris. They were too sure of themselves and that’s why they failed. I find this pretty interesting. A lot of that is true, right? I’m not surprised that Luke has gone this way and I just find it interesting from a character point of view. Later, I’m not sure when, we get more info about what happened between Luke and Ben Solo (Kylo Ren). The story is told 3 times, and each time you get a slightly different version of events. First time is what Luke says to Rey. He tells her that he sensed growing darkness in Ben and he went to see him during the night to try and reason with him, but Ben flew into a rage and pulled down the building on top of his head, and then destroyed the temple. The second version of the story is what Kylo tells Rey during one of their ForceTime sessions. He tells her that Luke didn’t give the complete story and that Luke had come with his lightsabre to murder Kylo in his sleep. A lot of fans can’t handle this and just believe that Luke would never do this and that their childhood is ruined and all that, but it’s not the final version of events. The third version of the story is the true one. Luke explains to Rey that he had become aware of a growing darkness in Ben and that he struggled with what to do about it. He went to Ben’s room in the night to read Ben’s mind and was so shocked by the darkness inside him that in a moment of compulsion he ignited his lightsabre in order to kill him and rid the galaxy of another possible evil tyrant, but that as soon as he ignited his sabre, he regretted the decision and realised that this meant killing his nephew, one of his students in a cowardly way. So he immediately changed his mind when he realised what he was doing. I think this just gives Luke’s character more depth. Remember that he was the last jedi and perhaps he’d taken on too much in agreeing to train these young students. That’s a big job and perhaps he wasn’t really capable of doing it all on his own. Maybe Yoda and Obiwan’s force ghosts hadn’t visited him for ages so he hadn’t had guidance from them. As he said - he believed in his own legend and this was his failing. He took on too much and ultimately wasn’t able to handle the task of restarting the jedi order on his own, taking on his sister’s troubled son who was also incredibly powerful in the force but touched by the dark side and was already being manipulated and controlled by Snoke through the force. It was all too much for one guy. I think there is a lesson here and that is that success can be very dangerous - in this case Luke had success in the fact that he helped to redeem Darth Vader and kill the emperor. This can lead to a false sense of confidence which can lead ultimately to failure. There’s a lot of that in this film. It’s tragic, but at least there’s more depth to it than just gymnastic lightsabre duels and “being badass”. Anyway, Luke tells his story - of how he immediately changed his mind and was not going to kill Ben, but then Ben woke up and saw Luke standing over him with his ignited lightsabre and that’s when he pulled down the building on top of Luke and destroyed the temple. It’s a sort of misunderstanding that makes Ben think Luke really was going to kill him. In any case, Ben rejects Luke and he then probably gave his allegiance to Snoke. Luke again tells Rey to get off the island. He’s gone there to die, etc. This pushes Rey closer to Kylo who is the only one who seems to understand her. Will she turn to the dark side to be with him? Will he turn good? No idea. Not sure of the chronology here. At one point Rey visits the dark cave, like Luke does in Empire Strikes Back. This is a really cool and spooky sequence where she seems to see herself trapped in a time line or perhaps it’s just her reflection repeated again and again. She follows this line of reflections until she’s face to face with a mirror and she’s convinced that this will reveal the truth she’s been looking for - her parents. A dark figure approaches her in the mirror. Who is it? Luke? Snoke? Han? Leia? Another figure from Star Wars lore? In the end, she finds herself staring at her own reflection. What does this mean? I guess it means that she’s on her own and her parents just aren’t important. Also, at some point here, Luke decides to reconnect with the force. He sits on the stone altar on the clifftop and meditates. I think he makes a connection with Leia, who is in her coma. I think this is where Luke realises a lot of things - but it’s not actually shown in the film. By reconnecting with the force here, I think he gets strength from his renewed connection with Leia, realises that there is something he can do. Basically, by reconnecting with the force he realises his power and perhaps his hope again, or realises the importance of Rey. I’m not sure. Rey and Kylo have a Forcetime - again they’re getting closer to each other all the time. I think in this one Kylo is topless which kind of amps up the sexual tension between them. Rey seems to believe in Kylo more than she does in Luke at this point and she probably believes she can turn him to the light side of the force etc, but we still don’t really know how Kylo feels. He’s hard for us to read - he’s just blank and unreadable, which is a strength in terms of the acting performance. He could be a bit vulnerable, perhaps a bit lost, but possibly pure evil - we don’t really know! They actually touch, and when they do Luke bursts into Rey’s hut and is shocked to discover them in contact, and he destroys the hut and breaks the connection. Then there’s a sort of fight between Rey and Luke, where Rey demands to know if Luke really did try to kill Kylo, and she attacks him with her staff, and Luke defends himself with a stick and disarms her. To me this looks like he’s still training her. When he disarms her, she force grabs the blue lightsabre and appears to have beaten Luke who kind of falls to the ground and gives up - but if you watch closely we see his hand is raised and I’m sure that he could have summoned his green lightsabre whenever he wanted in order to defend himself. I think he let Rey get the better of him. This is when he confesses that he did momentarily contemplate killing Ben, but that he instantly changed his mind. So - just to set the record straight on this, Luke was not going to kill Ben in his sleep. The idea flashed across his mind when he saw that Snoke had turned him to the dark side, but he instantly changed his mind. I say that because a lot of the hardcore fans have lost faith in this film because they thought Luke was going to murder a child in his sleep - he wasn’t. Rey then decides to leave the island in order to go to Kylo because she believes she can turn him. Luke says “No, it won’t go the way you think”. It’s a bit like that moment in Empire Strikes Back when Luke goes to confront Vader but Yoda tells him he’s not ready yet. Rey is delivered to Kylo Ren in an escape pod from the Millenium Falcon and then we get one of my favourite moments in the film. Kylo puts Rey in handcuffs and on the way to Snoke’s throne room they have a conversation. She explains that she’s confident Kylo will turn to the light because she’s had a vision. But Kylo explains that he’s also had a vision that Rey will turn to the dark. I suspected that Kylo would turn to the light, because there was more evidence for it. I didn’t really believe Rey would turn to the dark side, but there were a few things that suggested that she could - e.g. she was drawn to the dark side during her vision while training with Luke. She is pretty impulsive and often strikes out in anger, it seems - and that’s often the way towards the dark side. Then the doors open and Rey meets Snoke for the first time. Meanwhile, Luke goes to destroy the Force Tree and the ancient Jedi texts. Yoda appears and stops him. It’s wonderful to see Yoda again. He’s not CGI Yoda, it’s puppet Yoda. They actually used the original mould from Return of the Jedi. It works. Basically, he tells Luke that this is all a lesson and that Luke is a good master because he is teaching Rey the value of failure. “The greatest teacher, failure is.” - he says. Apparently Yoda still hasn’t perfected his grammar, despite failing to speak it correctly for probably about 900 years or something. Anyway, it’s a good lesson and it brings some redemption to Luke - who feels like he’s a lost cause. Everyone has to fail and it’s your failures that help you to improve. Success brings over-confidence and arrogance sometimes, whereas failure and accepting your failures brings us opportunities to learn. It’s true for learning English too - our failures are great learning opportunities. We have to say something wrong a few times before we can say it correctly. Expecting to get everything right first time is just unrealistic. Accept failure as the best way to learn, and not something to be ashamed of, you can overcome your problems and learn to be really strong. Yoda then destroys the force tree and (apparently) the sacred Jedi texts, as if to say to Luke - yes, you’re right - let’s destroy the past and start again. Luke is shocked that Yoda has done this (and apparently force ghosts can summon lightning now in Star Wars - fair enough, we were looking for some new force abilities, right? Apparently force ghosts can interact with the real world now - ok, fine) The tree burns, containing the books - and Luke says “But the sacred jedi texts!” and Yoda says “Read them have you? Page turners, they are not.” I laughed out loud at this line. Yoda’s two lessons for Luke: Failures are valuable learning experiences. Students always grow beyond their masters. Back to Snoke’s room. Snoke reads Rey’s mind, plays around with her - she attempts to fight back several times - grabs her light sabre but snoke makes it fly around the room - she grabs Kylo’s light sabre and Snoke flings her around the room. He seems impressed with her tenacity and he actually says “such spunk!” which made me laugh, because… well the word “spunk”. Do you know what that means? It’s a bit rude. Here are the two definitions. Courage, bravery, strength of character. Semen (offensive) He means defintion 1, but still - it’s a bit creepy that Snoke gleefully talks about “spunk”. Snoke is a horrible, creepy old git. He’s also really arrogant and wealthy - he wears a gold robe a bit like Hugh Hefner the playboy guy. He’s horrible. But the CGI motion capture is brilliant. He looks really realistic. Good job Andy Serkis and the special effects team. Snoke then reads Rey’s mind. I think he was considering whether she could be turned to the dark side, perhaps to become his apprentice and replacement for Kylo. That’s often the way it goes - but he summarises that she’s too pure or can’t be turned or something. So, he decides that Kylo should kill her, perhaps to complete his training. Meanwhile Kylo looks at the situation quite blankly except for subtle reactions and the movement of his eyes. It reminds me of how Vader observed the Emperor when he was attempting to turn Luke to the dark side. We suspected that Vader was loyal in his heart to Luke. Similarly, I suspect that Kylo hates Snoke and feels resentment towards how manipulative he is, and we suspect that Kylo has feelings for Rey or at least believes that Rey might join him somehow. I wonder if this is a romantic feeling or a strategic one. Snoke orders Kylo to kill Rey, and we still don’t know what Kylo is thinking. Rey looks up at him and simply says “Ben” - appealing to his good side. At this point Snoke gets really carried away, proclaiming that he can see Kylo’s thoughts and that Kylo is turning his lightsabre and is going to ignite it in order to kill his true enemy. But secretly Kylo is using the force to turn Luke Skywalker’s lightsabre which is sitting on the table next to Snoke, and as Snoke is convinced that he’s seeing Kylo’s intentions to kill Rey, perhaps he’s not seeing it clearly and in fact Kylo ignites Luke’s lightsabre killing Snoke. I found this really surprising and satisfying. The look on Snoke’s face - he’s so shocked! It’s also a really well-directed sequence. The lightsabre stabs Snoke in the side and then we see the scene from Kylo’s point of view, and Kylo pulls the sabre towards him, cutting Snoke in half! The ignited sabre flies through the air and Rey’s hand comes up to grab it. Rey stands and for a moment Kylo and her face each other and we wonder whether Kylo is going to attack her, or what will happen... Then everything goes in slow motion as Rey and Kylo, are attacked by 8 Praetorian guards and they fight back to back on the same side against the guards. This is an absolutely wicked sequence. The guards are fantastic. They wear this weird red armour which appears to be able to deflect some lightsabre blows. They also have different weapons - swords, staffs, a sort of whip that becomes a sword. It all happens incredibly quickly and the screen is filled with several fights at the same time. Sparks fly, Rey screams and roars as she fights, Kylo’s fighting style is brutal and sketchy. It’s raw power. At one point the wall catches fire and in the middle of the fight the room starts buring down. One of the guards gets thrown into some kind of fan unit and gets chopped into pieces. It all happens incredibly quickly and intensely. Rey also has some good moves. Again - I don’t know how she learned to fight like this. Let’s just say that growing up on a rough junk planet like Jakku meant that she had to learn how to defend herself, add to that the fact that she’s obviously gifted with force abilities and has had some light sabre fighting experience now - she’s also brave and intelligent. The two of them manage to fight off the guards and defeat them, but it’s not easy. At one point it looks like they’ve been beaten. Kylo is unarmed, Rey is held by one of the guards, but she manages to get out of it by dropping her lightsabre, getting out of the guard’s grip and then catching the sabre again in mid air before dispatching the guard. Kylo is still being held by the last guard, who is kind of strangling him. Rey quickly throws her sabre to Kylo who catches it and ignites it instantly, sending the beam through the guards face, who drops away, dead. What I like about this moment is that Kylo catches the lightsabre, ignites it, lets the guard drop and steps forward and he never takes his eyes of Rey at any point, and never blinks. Then, still staring intensely at Rey he steps forward. Rey tells him there’s still time and that they can save the Resistance. She assumes he’s turned good, but he hasn’t. He tells Rey they should let the past die and start anew - kill Snoke, kill Skywalker, let the Resistance die. Rey is sort of heartbroken and just says “Ben, don’t do this”. He also tells her who her parents are - I guess he saw it in a vision or something. He says that they were junk traders who just sold her off as a slave for money and that now they’re dead and buried in the desert. “You’re nobody, nothing…” “but not to me”. He begs Rey to join her, but she’s heartbroken and won’t do it. She sees that Kylo is beyond redemption at this point. I think Kylo has crossed a line and he’s the new Snoke. All these changes of position happen really fast. Surely, this is the interesting part of this film - what is really going on in Kylo’s head? Will he go good or bad? In Return of the Jedi we have similar questions about Darth Vader and ultimately he turns good, but in this one Kylo doesn’t. He’s the bad guy. He wants to kill her friends and he’s being very manipulative. He might be lying about her parents, even though she says she’s always known deep down that they abandoned her. But maybe he’s lying or something. Perhaps we’ll see. Or perhaps her lineage isn’t important and it doesn't matter what your family connections are. Anyone can be strong in the force. She goes to grab Luke’s lightsaber from Kylo and it ends up suspended mid air between them as they both struggle to grab it. The lightsabre explodes. In the film this part of the story is told in parallel with the other parts which I haven’t mentioned yet - namely the Finn and Rose storyline and the Poe/Admiral Holdo storyline. Finn and Rose storyline. Finn is going to escape and find Rey. Rose stops him. They work out together (cheesily) that the hyperspace tracking can be stopped if they disarm it from the lead ship. Finn has intel on the location of the tracker and they work out that they can get in and disable it, and save the Resistance. It’s surely a suicide mission. Poe agrees, and they call Maz Kanata for info. Maz Kanata is a crap character, isn’t she? A sort of vague orange Yoda who isn’t as interesting as Yoda. A complex and contrived plot is set up where Finn and Rose have to meet a code breaker who can help them access Snoke’s ship (is it Snoke’s ship or another ship - not sure). So they head to Canto Bite. “The worst type of people” Just park on the beach - bad move. But these kids don’t really know what they’re doing. A bit like the Cantina Bar but everyone’s rich. Weird horse things on a racetrack, they’re looked after by slave kids. Rose hates the town. Little drunk creature putting coins inside BB8. They get caught and thrown in jail. Pretty rubbish. Then Benicio Del Toro’s character turns up in the film. He’s great. I’ve always liked him in films. He’s an “engaging screen presence” to quote Mark Kermode. He overhears them discussing their plan and says he can get them in the room on the FO ship. Somehow he has a way to pick the lock and get out, and with BB8’s help they get away, so do Finn and Rose who escape on the horses, which smash up the casino resort before being released into the forest. This is a bit cheesy and feels a bit like a “message” about animal cruelty. I love animals, so fair enough - but it’s a very Disney moment. Anyway, DJ turns up in a ship with BB8 and they get rescued, and the fly towards the FO ship for their mission, which is to go undercover and turn off the hyperspace tracking, while the Resistance are still running away from the FO and slowly running out of fuel. DJ is an interesting character. He’s one of those ones who exists in the moral grey area between the good and bad sides, a bit like Boba Fett and even Han Solo at the start of Episode 4. I think this gives some much needed moral ambiguity. Also, he shows us that the rich people on Canto Bite make their money making and selling weapons to the FO and the Resistance. This adds a bit of complexity to the whole “intergalactic war thing” which underpins this whole series of films, and just shows that there’s more to this than just good guys vs bad guys - there’s a whole industry behind these wars that makes some people really rich. I think for some fans this is a bit too political for Star Wars, which is ironic considering how politics were involved so much in the prequel films. They make it onto the Supremacy (I think) and go undercover. BB8 disguises himself as one of those little black droids - a “mouse” droid I think they’re called. He’s disguised as one of them by hiding under a black dustbin as far as I can see. Amazingly nobody really notices them, including Finn who surely is a famous traitor by now … I say nobody notices them, actually an evil black version of BB8 does notice them. I love this evil BB8. He’s actually called BB9-E and it’s interesting how just a few changes in design makes this little droid instantly evil looking. I think I heard Mark Hamill talking about this in an interview - just a few changes - make the droid black, with a different shaped head and it just screams “Nazi!” It does look like a nazi version of BB8. Also, they manage to endow him with a lot of menace and malice. His red eye narrows with suspicion when he sees Rose, Finn, DJ and BB8. Long story short - they get to the tracker and it turns out that DJ has set them up - he betrayed them and he betrays the whole Resistance and their plan to escape to Crait because the FO offered him loads of money. Finn gets angry and calls him a traitor I think, or says something like “They’re the bad guys” - and DJ says something along the lines of “Good guys, bad guys, what’s the difference. They blow you up today, you blow them up next time…” I find his cynicism and pragmatism to be refreshing and interesting in the context of this binary good guys vs bad guys conflict. This is a really enjoyable bit of ambiguity and I really hope we see Benicio Del Toro’s character again. Perhaps the most interesting moments in all of Star Wars are the moments when there’s moral ambiguity - like the character of Boba Fett who is only interested in self-preservation and money, or the moments when Luke Skywalker appears to drift towards the dark side slightly in order to achieve things - specifically when defeating Darth Vader, or when Anakin/Vader goes dark and then light at the end. These are the interesting moments and DJ is an example of that. So, Finn & Rose are caught, The Resistance are screwed… Some people complain that the Finn and Rose storyline doesn’t achieve anything. But that’s the whole point - it’s another lesson in failure. Sometimes characters fail in films - it’s boring if they just succeed every single time - and anyway the Resistance were always the underdogs and Finn and Rose were never going to succeed with this plan anyway - it’s was a suicide mission. They’re lucky that they got this far. Back to what’s happening with The Resistance fleet. Leia is in a coma, Holdo takes over. Poe disagrees with her strategy - which appears to be just to jump ship and escape the fleet. He thinks it won’t work and it’s cowardly. He attempts a mutiny but gets stunned by Leia who she comes back. She uses a blaster set to stun. We haven’t seen this since episode 4 - blue rings firing out, rather than red or green laser blasts. It turns out that Holdo’s plan is not to just escape the ship, but to evacuate to a nearby planet that they’ve been heading for. Poe wasn’t aware of this because he was demoted. They plan to escape to Crait where there’s an old rebel base. They can use that as a defensive fortress and can call for support from around the galaxy. Just as well really, because Finn and Rose’s mission has failed. Then we discover that DJ has told the FO about this plan to evacuate to Crait and the FO begin attacking the escape vehicles as they head towards Crait. The Resistance is screwed now. Finn and Rose’s mission to stop the hyperspace tracking has failed and now the FO know about the other plan to escape to Crait and are blowing up the escape transports. Also, at this moment it looks like Rey is about to be executed by Kylo Ren. Finn and Rose are about to be executed. Oh yeah and Captain Phasma has turned up too - apparently she didn’t die in Episode 7. She doesn’t really do much, except being Finn’s nemesis. Leia and the rest of the Resistance have boarded the escape transports to Crait, but Holdo stays with the main fleet, and when she realises that the escape transports are being attacked she suddenly decides to sacrifice herself and aims the Raddus at The Supremacy (Snoke’s ship) and goes into hyperspace. WOW - a really mind blowing moment and done really well because the Raddus enters hyperspace and flies at lightspeed through the Supremacy and a bunch of other FO ships causing massive damage and a huge explosion and it’s all done instantly and in total silence, followed by a really cool sound effect. Silence used to great effect. The explosion on The Supremacy gives Finn and Rose the chance to avoid being executed and they fight back against Captain Phasma and the storm troopers while the whole hangar bay explodes around them. There are tie fighters falling on the floor and blowing up, AT-AT walkers crashing here and there. In the midst of all this chaos, Finn and Phasma have a battle and Finn fights with a lot of spirit. Rose shoots Phasma but the blast deflects off her armour. Cool moment. Phasma appears to have the upper hand in the fight and knocks Finn into a lift shaft, but clearly Phasma hasn’t seen the Original Trilogy - we know that there are moving platforms that go up and down in these shafts and of course Finn hasn’t fallen to his death, he reappears and smashes Phasma in the face, cracking her mask. She says “You’ll always be scum” before falling into an explosion. I doubt that she’s dead. She’s bound to come back next time. “Rebel scum” - this is the default insult for Rebels or Resistance fighters it seems. Scum is a bit like a dirty layer that floats on the top of old water or something. It’s just a generic insult, but it was used once in Return of the Jedi when an imperial officer said it to Han Solo and it sounded cool - so now the word is used a lot. These films still trade a lot on nostalgia for the old films, and it works. Finn and Rose manage to escape the burning ship - how? They’re rescued by BB8 driving a AT-ST “scout walker” thing, which made me go “Yeah, right?!” out loud in the cinema when I first saw it. People complain that Rey’s character is too perfect and that she can do anything and that this is unrealistic and unfair and some sort of feminist agenda or something, but BB8 (and R2D2 for that matter) is also a perfect character who seems to be able to do anything. He takes out FO guards, he can pilot an AT-ST walker, he can get blown up and assemble himself again, he can fix any problem on an X-Wing - but nobody complains about that. OK, so now the storylines come together. The Resistance (Leia, Poe and the few remaining other people) make it to Crait and set up their base there. God knows why it takes the FO so long to attack them here, but it does. Maybe they needed a bit of time to set up all the awesome weaponry that they’re going to use to smash through this big door to this old Rebel base where The Resistance are hiding. Finn and Rose escape The Supremacy with BB8 and join the Resistance on Crait. The idea is that The Resistance can defend themselves here, call for help and then wait for the help to arrive. The thing is, no help comes. None of their allies out in space care. No Lando Calrissian or anyone like that - nobody’s coming to help them. So it’s about a couple of hundred REsistance members vs the FO with their huge AT-M6 walkers. They have trenches, with some defensive weapons and this huge reinforced door protecting them, and a few very sketchy looking ground fighters, and that’s it. The FO have a massive battering ram cannon which is “Death Star technology” - basically a smaller version of the Death Star’s big green laser that can blow up planets. This is what they’ll use to break through the door. The idea is that The Resistance need to somehow destroy the cannon if they stand a chance of surviving. Now, what about Rey. Last time we saw her she was locked in a tug of war with Kylo over Luke’s blue lightsabre, which caught in the middle between the two of them, explodes. Apparently Kylo was knocked out by the explosion and Rey managed to escape in Snoke’s personal ship, and she took the fragments of the light sabre with her. We see Snoke’s dead body, his tongue sticking out, lying on the floor. Also both his hands were severed when Kylo killed him - this is pretty neat because someone always gets their hand or hands removed in Star Wars films, in this case it was Snoke, but he also lost the whole top half of his body. I wonder if we’ll ever find out Snoke’s back story, but I guess we never learned The Emperor’s backstory in the original films, he was just a powerful old dark side user and that’s it. I think we probably knew more about him than Snoke though, and I admit that we could have used just a little bit more exposition about Snoke - just a bit of detail. I think the hardcore fans are very upset about this, because they spent 2 years coming up with very elaborate theories about his origin - like, he’s Mace Windu, or he’s Darth Plageius (The Emperor’s old master). It seems he’s not that important, and anyway we don’t need an origin story for everyone, do we? I expect there will be a book about him coming out or whatever. Then General Hux comes into the room and can’t believe what he’s seeing - Snoke is dead, his tongue sticking out and everything. Kylo is still unconscious and Hux actually goes for his gun - he would have killed Kylo in his sleep probably - because they don’t like each other and Hux would probably like to take control of the FO, but Kylo wakes up. They argue and then Kylo force chokes Hux, which is very reminiscent of Darth Vader. Hux capitulates and calls Kylo “Supreme Leader” - “The Supreme Leader is dead - long live The Supreme Leader!” So, Kylo is in charge of the FO now. So, the confrontation on Crait. The FO approach the base with the big gun. The Resistance launch a counter attack with these beaten up old speeder things. There’s almost no way they can win. The Millennium Falcon turns up at the last minute and helps out by making all the Tie Fighters chase it. This is another big emotional moment, when the Falcon turns up to save the day - or save that particular moment anyway - the music swells (John Williams’ score is brilliant again) - there are some stunning visuals as the Falcon is chased by Tie Fighters through these crystal caves and tunnels under the surface of Crait. But ultimately, the Resistance mission to destroy the battering ram cannon can’t win and Poe calls it off. This shows us that he’s learned something about leadership and strategy from the beginning of the film. But Finn doesn’t want to give up and he’s about to sacrifice himself for the Resistance by flying his ship into the cannon in a suicide mission. I was convinced he was going to do it, but at the last minute Rose crashes into him and saves him. This is a really cheesy moment I have to say. First of all, you can see from the wide shots as Finn is flying that Rose is nowhere near him - but again, this is a bit like that moment with the detonator button that gets caught by Rose’s sister at the start of the film - movies often break the rules of physics like this - so I’m willing to let it slide. And then there’s the moment where after Rose saves Finn she gives a little speech saying “We don’t do this to destroy the things we hate, we do it to protect the ones we love,” and then she kisses him. So this is a slightly forced romantic moment first of all, but the sentiment is nice. We should protect the things we love rather than destroy the things we hate - and it’s all sweet and good and nice, but I thought about a moment from Episode 3 - a crucial moment when Anakin turns to the dark side. He decides to join Emperor Palpatine precisely because he thinks this is how he’s going to save the one he loves - Padme. He is seduced by the dark side because he wants to prevent Padme from dying. So, it’s all about point of view isn’t it. Protecting what you love, destroying what you hate - they’re sort of two sides of the same coin aren’t they? Still, I think the basic message is nice - love conquers hate. I do agree with that. Be careful of doing things for hateful reasons. We should be motivated by love, basically. But isn’t this a slightly selfish thing for Rose to do? She stopped Finn from potentially saving the entire Resistance just because she personally loves him. But maybe The Resistance were screwed anyway. I think the point is - we shouldn’t think about this toooooo much. We shouldn’t expect Star Wars to be this perfect flawless thing. As I said before, I think the good things in this film outweigh the bad things But then again - if you’re angry about this Star Wars film, that’s fine - it’s up to you. I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong. Everyone has their own subjective reaction to the film. So it looks like The Resistance are screwed then. Somehow Finn manages to fly back to the base or perhaps even drag Rose back there - I’m not sure how, but I dunno, maybe he used some of those trenches or something, or maybe one of the crashed speeders still worked. Leia looks defeated. She says that hope is lost. But then Luke Skywalker turns up. There’s an emotional moment when he speaks to Leia - they agree that Kylo wasn’t Luke’s fault, and Luke comforts Leia by giving her a memento of Han Solo - a pair of dice that used to hang in the Millenium Falcon. Luke then goes out to face the First Order armed with his Light Sabre. When I saw this I was really excited and yet didn’t know what to expect. Luke said it himself that he couldn’t face the entire FO armed only with a laser sword. Kylo, in his command ship, orders everyone to fire on Luke, using all their weapons. The AT-M6 walkers all fire on Luke. Kylo is enraged - shouting for more more more! This really is overkill. There’s just a huge cloud of red dust where the lasers are firing. Hux says “that’s enough” and the guns stop. Kylo slumps in a seat. He should be satisfied, but he’s not. He’ll probably never be satisfied. We’re all thinking - surely Luke isn’t dead! And of course he isn’t. He steps out of the cloud of red dust, unscathed. He looks up at Kylo’s ship and even brushes his shoulder dismissively, which is pretty cool. There’s something strange about Luke. He looks younger. His beard and hair are shorter. He has no dust on him. Kylo is furious again and instructs his soldiers to take him down to the surface to face Luke. Kylo says “I suppose you’ve come here to save my soul” Luke: No. This was awesome, I can’t really explain why. Also, Mark Hamill in this film is absolutely brilliant. He’s really developed as an actor since the original trilogy. He ignites his light sabre - and it’s the blue one. Weird, I thought the blue one got split in two when Kylo and Rey were fighting earlier. Kylo doesn’t seem to notice this because he’s in a rage. He ignites his crackling red light sabre. I love Kylo’s brutal style and the way he stands sort of hunched over. Luke looks really cool in his classic Jedi clothing. Kylo runs at Luke and attacks him but Luke manages to avoid all his attacks. He does some pretty cool moves where he kind of rolls out of the way, making Kylo really angry. This is not the epic gymnastic light sabre combat from the prequels. This is a lot more about the drama between the two characters. There’s a lot more emotion and feeling in this than in watching Anakin and Obiwan jumping from object to object swinging their lightsabres again and again until you’re emotionally uninvested in the action. This is much more like a Japanese samurai movie, where the swordplay is brief but intense. In fact Luke looks a lot like a samurai in this scene and that is fantastic. So atmospheric and powerful. An interesting detail in this fight is that Kylo’s feet leave red marks on the floor where the salt gets disturbed, but Luke’s feet make no impressions on the floor at all. Apparently you can also see salt particles falling from Kylo during the fight, but nothing falling from Luke. Only later do we realise that Luke isn’t really there at all - he’s doing a force projection from Ahch-to and it’s all part of a plan to mentally defeat Kylo while giving the remaining members of the Resistance a chance to escape. Luke tells Kylo - “today the Resistance is reborn and you can never defeat me.” He also does some Obiwan Kenobi stuff to him, saying “If you strike me down in anger I’ll always be with you, just like your father.” That’s got to hurt! Kylo angrily charges at him and swipes his lightsabre at Luke but the blade passes straight through his body. At the time I was thinking - wow, has Luke been hiding his power all this time? Is he immune to lightsabres? Then I thought, oh wow he’s a force ghost! Then it’s revealed that the real Luke is meditating on a rock in Ach-to. This whole thing is a force projection! Luke then says to Kylo - “see you around kid.” and disappears. That’s a Han Solo quote too! I think what this means is that Luke is going to haunt Kylo as a force ghost - he’s always going to be there and Kylo will never have peace, he’ll always be reminded of how he murdered his own father. Then Luke disappears and Kylo is in a rage again. What I like about this: We don’t get a big light sabre duel, but that makes a change - at least we have some really interesting character-based interaction. Luke manages to teach Kylo a lesson without using violence. He only uses defence. He defeats Kylo mentally. He sacrifices himself to save the Resistance. He shows Rey that the force isn’t just about lifting rocks, controlling people’s actions or being really good with a lightsabre - it’s also about introspection and peace. Also, I like the fact that in the midst of all this fighting, explosions - Luke has learned how to win a battle without using violence. In fact, I respect Luke’s decision to just go on an island to live like a hermit. At least he’s decided that he’s fed up with the incessant fighting and war. He’s perhaps the only character to say that he’s had enough of the fighting - and isn’t this a sort of logical progression of what he learned while facing the emperor in Episode 6. He threw his lightsabre away and refused to fight or give in to his anger because he is a Jedi. Don’t blame Luke for choosing to go to that island and for feeling like a failure - he was actually just trying his best to prevent any further catastrophe. This feels like the true way of the Jedi - from a certain point of view. Also, he’s demonstrating incredible force power by doing this projection. This is something new that we haven’t seen before. Again, some people are pissed off with this saying “That’s not how the force works!” but honestly I’m glad that we’re seeing some new force powers in this film. It’s about time we had some slightly new things. By doing this, Luke also manages to create the myth of Luke Skywalker, which will no-doubt be told again and again. He’s accepted his place as a myth and how important and powerful this can be as a way of inspiring new generations to have hope. This is beautiful. Luke has always been a symbol of hope, but he’s a fallible human who couldn’t always live up to his own myth, but he manages at the end to do it in his own way according to how he understands the light side of the force - using defence not attack, without using violence, fighting a mental battle. Then on Ach-To we see Luke collapse from the strain of doing this massive force projection. He climbs back up onto the rock and stares out across the ocean at the sunset, and it’s two suns. This made me cry! I couldn’t help it. It just took me straight back to the moment in Episode 4 when Luke was not much more than a boy staring across the desert at the dual sunset - full of aspiration and dreaming of adventure, and that’s how he ends his life. I can’t put it into words really, but this got me right in the feelings. It’s pretty ridiculous I know, but there it is. Luke then disappears in the same way Obiwan did and Yoda did. He becomes one with the force. I guess this means that he’ll be back as a force ghost in episode 9. Good - I really like Mark Hamill and I hope to see more from him. Meanwhile, the last remaining members of the Resistance have worked out that there must be a way to get out through the back of the caves by following the crystal foxes that live there. There’s quite a magical moment where one of the beautiful crystal foxes leads them to a gap at the back, but it’s filled with boulders. Rey is on the other side - she’s used the tracking device to follow their position from the surface, in the Falcon with Chewie. She works out that the pile of boulders is blocking them from escaping and she’s going to need to use the force to move them all. This is a bit ironic because earlier in the film Luke told her that the force isn’t about lifting rocks! But apparently sometimes it is! Of course she manages to lift all the rocks, freeing the last remaining members of the Resistance and they escape in the Falcon. There must be just about 10 people left! But Leia says they have all they need to start again. They’re the spark that will light the fire to burn the First Order down, etc. We see also that Rey has managed to keep the sacred jedi texts - they’re in a drawer on the falcon. So I suppose this means she can learn the ways of the Jedi properly and maybe she’ll get some help from Luke’s force ghost. Kylo and Rey have one more force vision before the Falcon leaves. They stare at each other and Rey closes the door - signifying that she’s closing herself off from him, I suppose. But surely the interesting thing going forward will be their relationship. Will she be able to turn him back to the light, or defeat him somehow? Will Kylo turn her to the dark somehow? What’s going to happen to Kylo? I quite like the idea that he’ll be haunted by Luke - a bit like the way Macbeth is haunted by his friend Banquo in the Shakespeare play Macbeth. In the final scene of the film we see some of the slave kids on Canto Bight - one of them is telling the others the legend of Luke Skywalker - him standing up against the entire First Order. It reminds me of how C3P0 tells the Ewoks the story of the rebellion. The other children are enthralled by the story and seem genuinely inspired. This shows that the legend of Luke Skywalker gives hope to the next generation. Then the kids are told off by their cruel slave owner boss type guy and one of the kids goes out to sweep the yard. He grabs the broom using a force pull - showing that he is force sensitive, and then he looks up at the stars and sees a distant spacecraft fly across the sky. The End! I suppose this scene means that: Anyone can be strong in the force - you don’t have to be part of a specific bloodline Luke’s legend is an inspiration to the poor, lost or forgotten people The Resistance is not dead and there’s still hope left in the galaxy That’s a nice message isn’t it? So in summary, I found The Last Jedi to be bold in the way it refuses to pander to the fan theories and expectations, brave in the way it pushes the saga forwards by doing some new things and letting some old things die, nuanced in the way it allowed the characters to develop in complex and quite flawed ways, fun in how it included some pretty weird comic moments and just awesome in the way it dealt with several key moments of action that were fuelled more by emotion than by technical skill. I think it’s an intelligent film, a surprising film, it’s one of my favourite Star Wars episodes and I’m looking forward to seeing it again so I can pick up on some more of the subtle details that made it enjoyable. I have no idea how episode 9 is going to carry on - and I like that feeling. Apparently JJ Abrams is going to conclude the saga by directing episode 9. JJ is obviously a very competent filmmaker and someone who understands the core appeal of Star Wars but I’m also a little bit worried because JJ has an approach to making films that involves posing lots of mysterious open ended questions rather than by providing satisfying resolutions. Think of Lost, the TV show - it was brilliant at setting up lots of questions and mysteries that kept the audience guessing, but none of those questions and mysteries were adequately explained in the end. I just hope that episode 9 can at least bring some resolution to the story, rather than just leaving it all open to the interpretations of the slightly unhinged fanbase. I look forward to reading your opinions if you have them.

Is it possible that the â??young menâ?? who grabbed hold of the fleeing â??young manâ?? in Gethemane (in Mark) were the basis of the hypothetical â??12 legions of angelsâ?? in Matthew? What are your thoughts on Danielâ??s 70 weeks prophecy that apparently was fulfilled by Jesus to the day? And if we are to imagine that Jesus actually was a historical figure could he hit have self-fulfilled this himself? Since so many denominations of Christianity claim they are saved by grace alone, how do Christians get around all the works righteous passages? How do you suppose Lutherans are able to keep Lutherâ??s treatise "On the Jews and their Lies" under wraps? When Luke says "Jesus was the first to rise from the dead" in Acts, is he talking about rising out of hell, which is what I've heard at least one apologist say, or did he actually mean the first to rise from the dead, forgetting about all of the previous folks that were raised in the OT and the people Jesus raised himself? Why is liturgy important, and also, why are there seasons to the church year, like Advent, Lent, Pentecost, and so on? I recently read your article â??Was Jesus John the Baptist Raised from the Dead?â?? How have your thoughts about this idea changed since you wrote the article? What type of reaction have you received from other critical scholars? It's my understanding that Marcion believed in the dual Gods like the Gnostics and that Jesus was sent by the "Good" God as a spiritual entity. He felt that Paul was Godâ??s chief apostle and Marcion collected Paulâ??s letters into a canon. In my opinion this is damning evidence that Marcion felt Paul believed in a spiritual Christ and not a human one, i.e. Mythicist's are right! Why do you suppose Matthew, writing for a Jewish audience, does not mention the circumcision of Jesus but Luke, writing for a Gentile audience, places it at the proper 8th day? Seems to me it would be the opposite of this. Could you talk about the Gabriel Revelation stone?

Luke - Acts is considered in this part three discussion. Examine the Structure of Luke. The Gospels present the significance of Jesus. When Luke talks about order, he is not talking about chronology but theology primarily. Luke uses Mark's gospel as a source. Luke's order has more to do with the structure of Luke's narrative starting in Luke 3 and through Acts 28. Luke-Acts is a geographical presentation of God's action in the Son and in the Spirit. Luke focuses on the Son and Acts focuses on the Spirit. Luke 1 and 2 are the Birth Narratives and an introduction to the life of Jesus. Luke 3:1-9:50 shows Jesus' Ministry Outside Jerusalem. Luke 9:51-19:27 reflects the Journey to Jerusalem. Luke 9:51-19:17 contains most of the material unique to Luke. Luke 19:28 - 24:52 accounts for Jesus in Jerusalem. Acts is another geographical presentation but it moves in the opposite direction. In Acts 1:1-8:1, the Church is in Jerusalem. In Acts 8:1-9:31, the Church moves out to Judea, Samaria, and Galilee. Acts 10:1-28:31 takes the Church outside Israel to the ends of the earth. Luke's geographical pattern has a theological purpose that shows the Lordship of God over history. Luke not only traveled with Paul but was a preacher of the Gospel and historian of the early Church.

He's calling us out of the boat. Let's get out and walk on water once again.

There are two kinds of dreams. An honest dream. “The kind of dream,” writes Luke Mehall “that keeps you up at night, and wakes you up in the morning with a knot in your stomach that can only be untied with blood sweat and tears.” For Luke, climbing El Cap was that kind of dream. And then there’s the other kind of dream. The kind that starts out as a joke, then escalates to the level of the ridiculous. When Luke drove west towards Yosemite National Park, he was determined to realize one of each.     CLICK HERE TO LISTEN

After Christ’s ascension there is the promise of the outpouring of the Spirit. When Luke recounts this in Luke 24 there is the promise of the Spirit that will be poured out. The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Today’s episode is about taking your experience and using it to help those who’ve been impacted by trauma. My guest today is Luke Worsfold. Luke grew up with a drug-addicted mother who died when he was 10. The experience of her death caused severe trauma throughout Luke’s life, which led to Luke’s own drug addiction. When Luke realized that he, himself, was heading towards his own death, it was in that moment that he decided to make a commitment to become the best version of myself and lead others by example. Luke has since founded Lisa, Inside Addiction , a treatment center to help individuals with substance abuse problems. *In This Episode* * Luke's website: Lisa, Inside Addiction ( https://insideaddiction.co.uk/ ) * Luke’s Programs ( https://insideaddiction.co.uk/programs/ ) * In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/155643880X/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?creative=9325&creativeASIN=155643880X&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=0b348a4aa370ec87db041bc01f3a5860&tag=wescoatrapro-20 ) , Gabor Mate, M.D. * Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401307787/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?creative=9325&creativeASIN=1401307787&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=b9fddd8c97721cf0d836d4bfeef551f3&tag=wescoatrapro-20 ) , Jon Kabat-Zinn Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Brad’s 5-year Health & Fitness Reflections, Part 2 (Breather Show with Brad)

The B.rad Podcast

*Part 2 of my five-year health and fitness reflections covers some great exercise breakthroughs that I’ve implemented recently, as well as some lifestyle and mindset strategies that I’m placing great importance on these days.* ** I was talking with my former podcast guest and lifelong super athlete Dave Kobrine - the king of morning routines (listen to this show ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/11/06/davekobrine-2/ ) about his 2.5 hour daily regimen featuring waking with the sun for some easy cardio, a cold plunge and hot sauna, plus long weight training sessions). At the age of 59, Dave has a PhenoAge of 47, and together, we came up with some of our most beneficial highlights and best practices for aging gracefully, so let’s get to it! *Exercise* Some great overall trends for me in the past five years have been: * Backing off from workouts that are too tough and cause soreness/extended recovery time * Doing micro workouts on more active days. I have seen over time just how much a little here, a little there, every day, really adds up in the long run. * Rethinking Jogging ( https://youtu.be/7KFlg5hLma8 ) and overall minimizing endurance exercise. I don’t know how your brothers or Dietch can keep doing it but it doesn’t seem healthy to run marathons in one’s 50s. Certain genetic profiles may be more adapted. e.g., Non-dunkers… * Variable resistance training using an X3 bar and stretch Cordz for less soreness and less joint load. See my Day in the Life ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=emb_logo&v=TJu6br65oLA ) video to see how I work with both. * Doing my Morning Routine ( https://youtu.be/-IPPwBc3GLw ) every single day for the past 4 years. Since I have low consistency in life overall, this has made a life-changing difference. I feel fitter and more resilient overall, and when my knee heals, I expect to perform superhuman feats/set records. * Cold plunge! As you probably already know, doing a cold plunge is a staple in my morning routine, and if you are interested in setting up your own chest freezer to do cold water therapy at home, check out this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF6d9ngxnDo ) where I explain the steps behind my setup. * Fighting the hyper connectivity battle: I love the positives that come with technology, but I also can’t ignore the many downsides, so down time and spending time away from screens is something we all must prioritize by using discipline. What really works for me is, instead of simply relying on willpower all the time, I make an effort to orchestrate opportunities where I have to get away from the computer/phone. It helps so much when you find ways to be disconnected from your phone, like doing exercise, going in the sauna or jacuzzi, napping, or taking a meditation break. *Sleep* So incredibly dialed in there for years dating back to triathlon days getting 12 hours a night. However, in the back of my mind I have that wimp question - am I accustomed to luxurious sleep habits and sort of addicted like junk food? *Mindset* It is so important that we work on formulating a strong and empowering mindset that allows us to best deal with the things we all face daily, like anxiety, uncertainty, setbacks….things that are certainly heightened and exacerbated right now. But I love what Dave Rossi says about the pursuit of happiness: Lasting happiness is more about removing things that make you unhappy, and then you are left with happiness. This is powerful. When faced with fear and anxiety, respond by redirecting your thoughts to your values and your vision. Dr. Ron Sinha also explained on the show ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/08/06/sinha/ ) that FOMO has actual health consequences, so remember that your mindset literally plays a role in the state of your health. Another interesting manifesting concept is that that which you fixate on has a tendency to play out. Yes, good and bad. Remember what Luke Storey says: “Just doing the act is huge.” When Luke was on the podcast ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/03/31/luke-storey/ ) , he emphasized the importance of being grateful now and then going forward from that perspective, because you simply cannot manifest without having gratitude for what you already have. And Dan Millman, author of my favorite book and recent podcast guest ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2021/01/05/dan-millman-the-way-of-the-peaceful-warrior/ ) says, “Be happy now, without reason, or you never will be.” *TIMESTAMPS:* The mindset for so long has been a struggle and suffer to become a champion or even just to become fit. We have a tendency to overdo it. [02:28] Rest and recovery are most important. [05:14] Micro workouts make a fantastic contribution to your fitness. [08:21] You get a better workout from short explosive effort than you do from a steady state. [10:02] You get a fine cardio workout even with stop and start activities. [14:11] The X3 bar promotes the concept of variable resistance training. [17:10] A recap of this show talks about backing off from workouts, emphasizing micro workouts, re-thinking cardo, and variable resistance training. [23:04] The cold plunge is still very much recommended for health benefits both physically and psychologically. [23:51] It is very important to fight the battle against hyper-connectivity. Don’t let technology rule our lives. [26:07] Keeping an eye on your mindset is empowering as we struggle with today’s quarantine and other anxiety producing situations. Be clear on what it is that you want to make you happy. [30:02] Try making a vision board. One in 500 school-age children each year receive a head injury severe enough to be hospitalized. On July 28, 2015, young Luke Siegel suffered a horrific accident in Lubbock, Texas, when a modified golf cart landed on him and his brain was deprived of oxygen for more than 7 minutes. Luke grew up passionate about sports and competition, developing a special bond with his father, Tim, who was born in New Orleans. Now it’s a different life for Luke and his family, but with help and inspiration from his hero, Drew Brees, and his favorite football team, the New Orleans Saints, Luke continues to make strides in his therapy. Tim and Luke have attended eight Saints games together since the accident, and Tim Siegel says Drew Brees now may be “the most important person in Luke’s life.” March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and Tim, a former pro tennis player and tennis coach at Texas Tech University, joined Rachel Jones on Black and Gold Rush to discuss how the Saints have impacted their lives through more than just their play on the field. You can help Team Luke Hope for Minds by donating $3 in March at https://www.teamlukehopeforminds.org/. Wear green on March 3rd for Team Luke Hope for Minds Day! Since 2018, Team Luke Hope for Minds has reached children in 28 states and granted $750,000 to children who have suffered brain injuries. The organization provides financial & emotional support, but most of all - HOPE to families. LISTEN FOR THESE QUOTES 1. “I asked Luke just a few years ago to move his tongue if the Saints are going to win, and he moved his tongue. That was the beginning of my realization and others that Luke is in there, that Luke understands.” 2. “When Luke is not engaged or he’s unable to open his eyes, the therapist will ask Luke, ‘Can you do this for Drew? Can you do this for the Saints?’ And he’ll try because he heard the words Drew Brees.” 3. “March is an important month for everyone that associates with brain injuries because what people don’t realize is brain injuries among children is more prevalent than anyone could ever imagine.” 4. “5 inspirations from Luke: Find your passion, don’t ever quit, lean on friends, family, coaches, siblings, counselors, make good choices, and No. 5 is have faith.” 5. “Although I never dreamed that my son would be unable to talk, unable to play sports, I also know that he is making an impact on so many thousands of people all over the world.” 6. “I have two choices - one is to sulk and lay in bed, and two is to make a difference and give Luke the best opportunity for life that we can. I will never stop helping others until I take my last breath.” CONNECT WITH US / LINKS MENTIONED: Tim Siegel Twitter ( https://twitter.com/TimSiegelTTU ) Donate to Team Luke Hope for Minds ( https://www.teamlukehopeforminds.org/ ) Rachel Jones Twitter ( https://twitter.com/RachelW504 ) Rachel Jones Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/rachelw504/ ) SUBSCRIBE, RATE, & REVIEW “Black and Gold Rush is awesome and authentic, and I can’t wait for more.”
