Looking for a way to overcome your chronic illness? Fuggedaboutit! Seriously. Forget about it. Easier said than done, right? Jennifer recently reflected on this when she wrote: “I am aware of my Multiple Sclerosis every single day. The disease cannot be avoided, as it is everywhere in my life, from its treatment, symptoms, and progression. It's easy to let disease be our focus, but it is important and valuable to distract ourselves from it too.” Join us for this episode of A Couple Takes on MS Podcast as we explore the importance of engaging in activities that distract your mind and prevent the disease from consuming your every thought. Whether it's listening to music, reading a book, or going out for the night to watch a baseball game with our beloved Great Lakes Loons, MS is no longer front and center in our lives. And we found comfort in knowing that we aren't the only ones who feel this way and are not letting MS control our minds. Keynote speaker and best-selling author Mike Robbins has explained that the goal of this kind of thinking is "... to choose to ‘distract' ourselves (i.e. get out of our heads, let go of our negative worries, and take a conscious break from the day-to-day stress of life) in a truly healthy way. When our motivation is positive (we're not avoiding anything, but choosing consciously to take a break), the outcome and experience of our ‘distraction' is more likely to be healthy and beneficial.” Let our conversation be a distraction of sorts to find ways to get it out of your head from time to time. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Mike Robbins. In 2005, pressured by the rising housing market, Mike and his wife, Michelle, bought a home with no money down and no savings. That was a thing you could do back then. The negative amortization loan they secured seemed manageable at first, but Mike and Michelle soon realized they were sinking deeper and deeper into debt with no equity to show for it. They were getting by, and life was getting good for the couple. Mike's business was starting to thrive. Then the housing market crashed. By 2009, Mike's business had halved, and they were hundreds of thousands of dollars underwater. With two young children and a declining business, they were left asking, "How did this happen?" That's when they hunkered down and started chipping away at the problem to change their situation. Mike is the author of five books, Focus on the Good Stuff, Be Yourself Everyone Else is Already Taken, Nothing Changes Until You Do, Bring Your Whole Self to Work and We're All in This Together.  He's an expert in leadership, team performance, and company culture who delivers keynotes and seminars around the world that empower people, leaders, teams, and organizations to be more successful. Prior to his speaking and writing career, Mike was drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school but turned them down and chose to play baseball at Stanford University where he pitched in the College World Series. After college, Mike signed with the Kansas City Royals. He played three seasons in the Royals organization before arm injuries ended his playing career while he was still in the minor leagues. After his athletic career was cut short by injuries, Mike worked in sales and business development for two tech companies, before starting his own consulting business in 2001. Mike's clients include some of the top organizations and institutions in the world, such as Google, Wells Fargo, eBay, Gap, Microsoft, Schwab, Airbnb, the Oakland A's, Harvard University, Coca-Cola, and many others. Mike and his work have been featured on NPR, ABC News, the Oprah radio network, and in Fast Company, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.  He's a regular contributor to Forbes, hosts a weekly podcast, and his books have been translated into fifteen different languages. That's part of what makes change exciting and challenging. I feel both excited and scared about AI, personally. Is it going to eliminate certain jobs and certain things and certain people? It most likely will, just like any kind of new technology and automation. Think of what the internet did. It got rid of a lot of industries and jobs. At the same time, it created way more than it got rid of. At the end of the day, we still have to believe in ourselves and the importance of humanity and human connection. Restricted air flow through a clogged filter forces your system to work harder, reducing its lifespan. Trane CleanEffects uses a powerful, patented ifD corona field to charge incoming air, causing particles to adhere to the CleanEffects collection cells as air passes through. Since your furnace or air handler isn't struggling to work against a clogged filter, clean air flows freely. The Trane CleanEffects collection element is ground-breaking. Each layer is only 0.08 inches apart, with alternating charges, which makes for a stronger, more effective collection field. What is more, the Trane CleanEffects element has eight times the collection surface (over fifty sq.ft.) of a standard electronic air cleaner, so it is vastly more efficient at providing clean air throughout your home. Bring your “whole self” to work is a well-known phrase and movement in Corporate America which was inspired by a book of the same name written by Mike Robbins. The COVID years propelled this concept when the lines between work & personal were blurred even further. The idea is that being your authentic self at work could unlock untapped potential, creativity, and performance. Sounds refreshing and great, but what does that look like in the real world? Is it practical to bring 100% of ourselves to work? How often do you hold back parts of your personal self from the workplace? Maybe you're just fine with separation. How has this impacted your career? In this episode, my guest, Ngozi Nnaji, an entrepreneur, insurance brokerage owner, consultant, and professor shares her experiences with code-switching, redefining professionalism, empowerment, the role your work environment plays, and defining who you are at work. Get ready to take notes… because defining “who you are in the workplace” could be the step you need to take your career to the next level!
