What were two Irish sisters doing in Russia during the early years of the nineteenth century, editing the French-language memoirs of a princess who had been a close confidante of Catherine the Great? Author Alexis Wolf is in conversation with Duncan McCargo about a remarkable transnational story she has unearthed through meticulous archival research. Transnational Women Writers in the Wilmot Coterie, 1798-1840 (Boydell Press, 2024) highlights the centrality of non-canonical, middle-ranking women writers to the production of literature and culture in Britain, Ireland, Europe and Russia in the late eighteenth century. The Irish writers and editors Katherine (1773-1824) and Martha Wilmot (1775-1873) left a unique record of middle-ranking women's literary practices and experiences of travel in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Their manuscripts are notable for their vivid portrayal of the era's political conflicts, capturing a flight from Ireland during the Irish Rebellion (1798), time spent in Paris during the Peace of Amiens (1801-03), and extended residences in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. However, in their accounts of these key European events, the Wilmots' manuscripts, and published work, showcase their participation in a startling range of self-educating activities, including travel writing, biography, antiquarianism, early ethnographic observation, language acquisition, translation practices and editorial work. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book explores the collaborative relationships formed by women participating in cosmopolitan networks beyond the typical locations of the Grand Tour. Across their travels, the sisters met, engaged with, and learned from numerous key women of the time, including Princess Ekaterina Dashkova, Margaret King, Lady Mount Cashell and Helen Maria Williams. In this first full-length study to focus on the literary and cultural exchanges surrounding the Wilmot sisters, Wolf showcases how manuscript circulation, coterie engagement and transnational travel provided avenues for women to engage with the intellectual discourses from which they were often excluded. Alexis Wolf is an independent scholar of eighteenth and nineteenth century literature. Duncan McCargo is President's Chair in Global Affairs and a Professor of English (by courtesy) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Learn more about your ad choices. We've been to Las Vegas and back for the very unofficial recurring gathering we like to call BarrageCon (which is really just all of us hanging out at Mark's place). Believe it or not it's been one whole trip around the sun since we released the first ever episode of Indieventure! And to celebrate, we've opened up the mailbag once again to answer your listener questions. Ever wondered how we find out about exciting upcoming indies to talk about on the podcast, or which indie video game we'd most like to see get the tabletop treatment? Maybe you're curious as to our respective favourite games on the late lamented indie machine that was the Nintendo 3DS — or want to hear us go off-topic once more while we debate which Ace Attorney case would make the best stand-alone game? All this and more will be revealed, including an incredibly cursed final question that must be heard to be believed. This episode isn't really about any games in particular… don't worry though, here's a handy summary of the titles we touch on for all my list goblins out there! This episode is an opportunity to fill your earholes with some lovely (or not) discussions of Against the Storm, Boyfriend Dungeon, Braid, Citizen Sleeper, Control, Dredge, Gunman Clive, Harold Halibut, The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories, Monster Prom, Paradise Killer, A Park Full of Cats, Peggle, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, Severed, Slice & Dice, Steamworld Heist, Still Wakes the Deep, Stray Cats in Cozy Town, ValiDate: Struggling Singles in Your Area, and Wilmot's Warehouse. And, in this episode's pre-GOTY round-up of what we've been playing lately, we take a trip down false-memory lane with UFO 50, an 8-bit console that never was; discuss whether inventive perspective-flipped dating sim The Crush House is being held back by a broken in-game economy; and reach a surprising consensus on recent body horror streaming hit Mouthwashing. We end as ever with our latest round of hyperfixations! Rebecca has been reading Jacqueline Wilson's Think Again, Rachel has a new reality TV obsession in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and Liam has gone further down the Resident Evil rabbit hole than even he ever expected to get with The Mercenaries 3D. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Dr. David King's Wilmot's Warehouse has been described as a magic trick, a miracle, and one heck of a fun time. On today's Space-Cast!, we're joined by King to discuss the ins and outs of his creation, along with how he began teaching game design, his breakout browser game Tiny Islands, and the role of failure and memory in making a board game worthwhile.
Doing it live with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live In Concert, stacking shelves in CMYK's Wilmot's Warehouse, travelling with Catch Up Games' Faraway, and being lied to with Odd-Meter's Indika. This is the second part in our two-part series on South Africa's politics 30 years after the election of Nelson Mandela, and with it, the end of apartheid. Around the same time as that anniversary this past spring, there was another momentous event in the country: South Africans went to the polls in May, and for the first time in 30 years, the African National Congress — the political party of Nelson Mandela — lost its parliamentary majority. On this episode, Dan Richards talks with three experts on South African politics about this pivotal moment in the country: what it can tell us about South Africa's politics since the fall of apartheid, and what it might mean for the country's future. Guests on this episode: Wilmot James, a senior advisor at Brown University's Pandemic Center. Prior to coming to Brown, Wilmot was a member of South Africa's parliament. Before that, he managed multiple special projects for Mandela's office and was a co-editor of his presidential speeches.Redi Tlhabi is an award-winning South African journalist, producer and author. She hosted the acclaimed “Redi Tlhabi Show” for many years in South Africa, and regularly comments on the country's politics for international media. Stanley Greenberg is an American political strategist and pollster who assisted in Nelson Mandela's presidential campaign in 1994 and has written extensively on politics and race relations in South Africa.
