On Valentine's Day 2018, Max Schachter's life changed forever when his son, Alex, was murdered in the Parkland school shooting—the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. Since that day, Max has dedicated his life to preventing future tragedies, working with legislators, law enforcement, and school officials to improve school safety nationwide. The killer used an AR-15 semi-automatic, which he assembled in the school stairwell adjacent to the first floor classrooms. He fired the AR-15, which had an engraved swastika, 139 times. It is worth noting, several law enforcement failures occurred surrounding this horrific event. Max Schachter, the father of one of the victims, Alex Schachter, joins me on this episode of Some Future Day. Since the mass shooting, Mr. Schachter has elevated to become the preeminent mind surrounding school safety. But he is way more than simply a national school safety advocate. Max Schachter is a brave, fearless, and tireless soul who will never stop fighting for his son Alex and all the other victims and families of school shootings. In this episode, you'll learn about: The heartbreaking story of Alex—his passions, his dreams, and the life that was stolen. How the system failed to stop a known threat and the culture of leniency that allowed it to happen. The hard truths about school safety, leadership failures, and what must change. What Florida has done right and how other states can follow.Practical steps parents can take today to protect their children. This is a conversation about grief, action, and a father's relentless mission to make sure no other family endures the pain he has suffered.Order Marc's new book, "Some Future Day: How AI Is Going to Change Everything"Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/Episode Links:Max's Website: https://www.maxschachter.com/Max on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxschachter/https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxschachter/To join the conversation, follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok

What Florida's six-week abortion ban could mean for abortion access in the South – and whether the ban will motivate Florida voters to protect abortion access at the polls in November.Read more:On Monday, Florida's Supreme Court issued a decision that will allow one of the country's strictest and most far-reaching abortion bans to take effect on May 1. However, the court also ruled that an amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution can go on the November ballot, which would mean the six-week abortion ban could be undone in a matter of months if Floridians vote to protect the procedure.Together, the two rulings will ensure that abortion is a major issue in Florida during the presidential election — with Floridians experiencing the realities of a six-week abortion ban for six months before they have the opportunity to weigh in on the issue. Today, the Post's Florida reporter, Lori Rozsa, walks us through this critical moment for Florida and what this could mean for abortion access across the South.Another story we're following: On Monday night, an Israeli strike hit a humanitarian convoy and killed seven aid workers for World Central Kitchen, the food assistance group founded by celebrity chef José Andrés. Andrés spoke to “Post Reports” last month about his work feeding people in war zones, including Gaza. You can listen to that episode here.
