Governor Ron DeSantis has faced growing backlash and economic boycotts in response to controversial policies in Florida, including the "Don't Say Gay" bill that restricts classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity. Major corporations like Disney have condemned these laws, pausing film productions and operations in the state. Advocacy groups have called for tourism boycotts, with estimates of potential losses up to $7 billion. Entertainment figures and artists have canceled Florida shows and events. Companies like Citigroup are halting relocations to the state. The collective economic pressure aims to protest DeSantis' measures seen as discriminatory against LGBTQ individuals and harmful to Florida's business interests. Legal challenges argue the policies are unconstitutional. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has issued statements criticizing Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill and other policies under Governor Ron DeSantis. Here are some key points the NAACP has made: The NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the bill, saying it "follows a dangerous and divisive campaign led by Governor DeSantis attacking Black History Month, critical race theory, and now the fundamental human rights of the LGBTQ+ community." They argue the bill perpetuates dangerous discrimination against LGBTQ youth in Florida schools. The NAACP sees these policies as part of a broader agenda to stoke racial divisions and erase marginalized groups from schools. They contend DeSantis is spreading a dangerous political narrative. They have called for corporations, lawmakers and civil rights defenders to take direct action against policies like the "Don't Say Gay" bill that they believe harm young people. The NAACP pledged to advocate for the dignity, wellbeing and protection of all students in Florida, especially those within the LGBTQ community. They urged parents, educators, corporations and lawmakers to listen to marginalized youth and oppose legislation that denies human rights. Overall, the NAACP maintains that bills targeting protected classes like LGBTQ youth promote intolerance and run contrary to the goal of providing students with a high quality public education. They see a direct link between these measures and the broader struggle for civil rights. Though the Supreme Court's ruling on Vriend v. Alberta helped pave the way for equality for Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ communities, maintaining the road to dignity for all has been tumultuous. There have been many setbacks, followed by advances, followed by setbacks in the subsequent years. It took the Government of Alberta (GOA) 11 years to officially add the words “sexual orientation” to its human rights legislation. It also amended its education act to prohibit teachers from mentioning sexual orientation in schools without advising parents first. This was Alberta's equivalent to Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill. And it rolled back equality rights […]

Sam and Emma host Meg O'Connor, senior reporter with The Appeal, to discuss her recent piece "POLICE KILLED HIS SON. PROSECUTORS CHARGED THE TEEN'S FRIENDS WITH HIS MURDER.". Then, they're joined by Kathy Hempstead, senior policy advisor at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to discuss the impending unwinding of Medicaid continuous enrollment benefits. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on DeSanctis floundering in a theoretical primary, Twitter's antisemitism problem, TikTok's CEO's testimony, new anti-trans legislation in Arkansas and Georgia, and the author of Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill pleading guilty to PPP fraud, before diving into Tucker Carlson's musings on the potential arrest of Donald Trump. Next, Meg O'Connor dives right into the story of the murder of Jacob Harris, parsing through the Phoenix Police's 12 hours of surveillance of Harris, 19, and three of his friends – some as young as 14 – the deletion of the Police Department's internal communication from that period, and the charging of his compatriots with his murder. Stepping back, O'Connor walks through the robbery investigations by the Phoenix PD that led to this surveillance, why the complete lack of probable cause forced the police to delay any confrontation until the last possible moment, and how careless their ultimate approach to the situation was, before they wrap up by reflecting on how Phoenix prosecutors were able to turn the 11 bullets fired by their Police into the fault of his friends. Kathy Hempstead then runs Sam and Emma through what Medicaid's impending breakdown actually entails, the role of joint Federal/State funding, and why dismantling this system is drastically more costly than keeping it in place. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew tackle the absurdity of the Ted Lasso performance at the White House Press Briefing, Marcus from Ohio calls in to debate gun control and assess the constant threats to private life, and Nikki Haley incorporates China hawkery into her defense of wokeness being more dangerous than COVID. Tusli continues her anti-trans grift, Alyssa from North Dakota reflects on her political environments, and Alex Jones, Stephen Crowder ask Trump to calm down the incitement while also claiming “what incitement?” Kowalski from Nebraska also calls in, plus, your calls and IMs! In 2022, three hundred and forty pieces of legislation in twenty-three states targeted L.G.B.T.Q. rights. The most high-profile was Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill—officially the Parental Rights in Education Act—introduced by Governor Ron DeSantis. The law limits the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in grade-school classrooms, including through the removal of books and other educational materials. DeSantis, of course, won a landslide reëlection contest in November, with parental rights a central part of his platform. In July, when the “Don't Say Gay” law was newly implemented, Jessica Winter joined Tyler Foggatt to discuss the history of queer children's literature, why the right finds it so dangerous, and how its banning will affect the lives and education of young people. This episode was originally released on July 14, 2022.

For years, Republicans have been known as the party of moral outrage. Take for instance the recent book banning wars, or Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill. But Democrats aren't immune to moral outrage. At least that's what Noah Rothman, a conservative writer and commentator, believes. He is the author of the new book “The Rise of the New Puritans: Fighting Back Against Progressives' War on Fun.” In it, he argues that progressives, in their pursuit of liberal ideals, are fueling a movement of moral panics more reminiscent of 17th-century preachifying than 1960s liberalism — and that we're all worse off for it.Host Jane Coaston has doubts. So on today's episode, she invites Rothman and the editor at large for Times Opinion, Alex Kingsbury, to debate if moral outrage has really moved from the right to the left. “Are Republicans cultural revanchists? Of course they are. That's not new,” says Rothman. “What's new [is], progressives are joining them in the fight.”Mentioned in this episode:“Noah Rothman on the ‘Unjustice' of Social Justice Politics” from Vox Conversations“The Rise of the New Puritans” by Noah Rothman(A full transcript of the episode will be available midday on the Times website.)

On today's episode I discuss the political brainwashing by ESPN, money and power and sports and a tribute to John Clayton who passed away this week. Last Friday during a Women's NCAA basketball game the announcers jammed down the viewers throats their opinion of Florida's " Don't Say Gay" bill. I discuss how absurd this is and why I am boycotting ESPN. I also talk about why so many of our professional athletes misbehave towards the fans. Their is no recourse that's why! I also give a tribute to John Clayton who I had the pleasure of working with back in the late 90's. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Disney employees staged a walkout today as they protest against Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill. The bill would prohibit discussion about sexuality and gender identity in schools for children under the age of 10. On top of that, four Disney employees were caught in a human trafficking bust with more than 100 people being arrested. It seems a lot of people opposing the bill often work in spaces with or that cater to children. Are these people really trying to protect kids, or are they simply grooming the next generation? It's International Women's Month, and of course Twitter is celebrating by suspending people for celebrating biological women. Florida is the latest front in the culture war with a controversial bill to prevent teachers from speaking to children about the existence of same-sex couples or transgender people. But is the bill so vague that it could also prevent schools from acknowledging opposite-sex married couples too? The crew breaks down the intent, and the possible side effects, of Florida's “Don't Say Gay” law. And, what does Disney's response to the controversy tell us about where the wider culture is heading? Then, pastor and president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NALEC), Rev. Dr. Gabriel Salguero, joins Skye for a conversation about the growing influence of Latinos within evangelicalism. He says the diverse perspectives of Latino Christians offers the white church a “view from below,” and promises to bring renewal to the American church, but we shouldn't romanticize the movement either. Plus, an example of Christian Nationalism in the wild, and goats go to church. Maybe you've heard it called Florida's “Don't Say Gay” bill. Suffice it to say – that's not at all what it is or what it says. Stigall explains what's going on and brings in one of the greatest culture wars explainers today – Tammy Bruce. Tammy herself is gay, and formally of the left – but what she sees happening now in fights like these she believes gives conservatives and Republicans an opportunity to forge alliances with traditional Democrats, gay and straight who know this fight is deeply misleading and sinister. Plus Daily Wire investigative reporter Luke Rosiak on his important new book of the same subject “Race To the Bottom: Uncovering the Secret Forces Destroying American Public Education.”
