The season is finally over—and let's be real, everyone's exhausted. Gymnasts are sore, parents are tired, and coaches are running on fumes. Maybe you're not ready to even thing about nutrition and summer training for your gymnast. But here's the thing… summer training is short. Most gymnasts only have 14–16 weeks before pre-season ramps up again, and what happens now sets the tone for the entire next year. In this episode, we're talking all about nutrition and summer training for gymnasts—how to balance recovery with rebuilding strength, how to fuel for upgrades, and what gymnasts really need to focus on to come back stronger (without running themselves into the ground). This isn't about doing more. It's about doing the right things—at the right time—with the right fuel. Whether your gymnast is aiming for new upgrades or just trying to bounce back stronger, summer is the season to refocus and rebuild—not coast. This one is for you. If you're asking "What now?" after season
Episode Notes In this episode, I spoke with two ice dancers who have become strong advocates for survivors of sexual assault. Soléne Mazingue is a two-time Estonian national champion and three-time competitor at the World Championships. She made headlines for returning to competition after recovering from life-threatening brain injuries. Olivia Oliver is a Polish national champion and represented her country at the 2024 Worlds. Last fall, both women chose to go public about the sexual assault they each experienced within the sport, and the difficulties they have faced in pursuing justice. Solène has since founded the Instagram account #metooskating and is helping others to share their stories and find mutual support. I am humbled by the bravery and compassion that Solène and Olivia are showing as they work to make figure skating a safer place for others. This is a difficult topic to discuss, and please take care of your own well-being, but I really encourage my audience to listen to what Solène and Olivia have to say. In this episode of our Coaches Series, we're diving into a topic that sparks a lot of debate in the gym: snack breaks vs. performance fueling. Should gymnasts have snack breaks during practice? What's the difference between snacking and fueling? And what responsibility does a coach have in ensuring their athletes are fueled and ready to perform at each rotation? We explore how nutrition strategies can vary dramatically between gyms, but the goal remains the same—helping gymnasts show up at every event ready to give their best. This episode unpacks the key distinctions between snacking and intentional fueling. And why that matters for long practices and high-intensity training environments. Coaches want the best for their athletes. And if those gymnasts are training for 3+ hours, snack breaks, aka, fueling, need to be part of the gameplan. Listen in to today's episode to learn more about: The critical difference between snacking and fuelingWhy “fueling for the work required” is more than just a catchy phraseReal-world examples of how different gyms approach mid-practice fueling (the good, the bad, and the ugly) Links & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Top 10 Gymnastics Nutrition MythsNew Free Masterclass TrainingConnect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or christinaandersonrdn.com

What's appropriate when it comes to coaches trying to help gymnasts with their nutrition? There is a lot to unpack here, including thoughts from both school's of thought when it comes to this subject. Often coaches feel like they have to be everything for their gymnasts, or, parents expect them to know everything even when it's outside their scope of practice. In this episode, we dive into one of the more delicate aspects of coaching: supporting gymnast nutrition. While performance and recovery are tightly linked to how athletes fuel their bodies, the role of a coach in this area requires intentionality, empathy, and clear boundaries. Hopefully you find this a thoughtful, helpful episode which includes what's appropriate and what's not when it comes to coaches giving nutrition advice, making comments about gymnast bodies, etc. Coaches play a powerful role in shaping how gymnasts think about food, performance, and their bodies. With the right approach, you can create a supportive environment that promotes health, strength, and confidence — without crossing into territory outside of your scope.Listen in to today's episode to learn more about: The different options coaches have when it comes to addressing their gymnasts' nutritionWhat's appropriate and what's not in discussing nutrition (you might be surprised)Nutrition is a huge part of athletic performance — but when it comes to young athletes, it's a topic that must be approached with extra careLinks & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Episode 04: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and GymnasticsNew Free Masterclass Training- Is your gymnast underfueled?Connect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or christinaandersonrdn.com

If you've been following me on Instagram or tuning into my podcast lately, you've probably heard me talk about HTMA testing and how it's transforming the way we support gymnasts. But what exactly is HTMA, and why should you care?Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a powerful tool that measures mineral levels in the body by analyzing a small sample of hair. This test provides a long-term view of how minerals are being utilized, stored, and excreted—offering insights that traditional bloodwork often misses So many of the gymnasts we work with are underfueled (or have been) AND depleted in the major minerals involved in proper energy production, hormone regulation, and stress resilience. Most upper level competitive gymnasts have been training 20-30 hours a week for 5-10+ years and underfueling which puts them in a precarious spot and can lead to a lot of health issues that are not just coincidence. If you want to learn more or do HTMA testing with your gymnast, this is something available to our 1:1 clients inside The Balanced Gymnast® Program.Learn more here about HTMA and gymnasts

Have you ever wondered what happens after the medals are won and the records are broken? On this week's PerformHappy podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Theresa Kulikowski-Gillespie, a true legend in gymnastics and an inspiration beyond the sport.Theresa's resume is remarkable: an Olympic alternate for the iconic 1996 Games, a two-time NCAA champion, a world bronze medalist, and a record-setting athlete at the University of Utah. She speaks with deep wisdom about the importance of self-trust, mindfulness, and resilience. Her journey is a reminder that perfectionism doesn't have to be the driving force in our lives and that self-compassion can be a powerful tool for healing and growth. If you're struggling with perfectionism or looking for ways to embrace balance and well-being, this episode is for you. Theresa's insights on finding meaning and joy beyond the scoreboard are sure to resonate with athletes, parents, and anyone striving for a healthier approach to success. In this episode, Coach Rebecca and Theresa Kulikowski-Gillespie talk about:Theresa's Early Gymnastics Journey and Lessons in Overcoming Mental Blocks.Mastering the Mind and Using Visualization as a Superpower.Chasing the Olympic Dream and Overcoming Setbacks.Facing Injuries and Finding Balance in Life After Elite Gymnastics. From Setbacks to Success in NCAA Gymnastics.Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Practices for Gymnasts.Theresa's Work Now and Resources for Athletes.“When we judge ourselves. This biggest mistake we're seeing high level gymnasts make right now is…Only eating WHEN and IF they “feel hungry enough”… “my gymnast eats well” is 100% subjectiveThis can lead to "acute" underfueling. And a lot of gymnasts are already chronically underfueled, so this is a double whammy to acutely underfuel on competition day as well. Here's what we're seeing from gymnasts right now:
Meet season is in full swing and we're already seeing the same five mistakes gymnasts are making with their nutrition. I know competition season is already stressful enough with nerves, travel, weird session times etc. BUT too often I see gymnasts and their families IGNORE nutrition during season (except for the night before or day of) because of everything else going on. Unfortunately, this is why so many gymnasts get MORE burned out/injured as the season progresses. Why routine endurance gets WORSE a few meets in instead of better. But good news is these 5 mistakes your gymnast might be making with their nutrition are all fixable! Depends on how motivated they are and how badly they want it, but it is possible to correct these habits. If you want to do everything you can to help your gymnast be successful and healthy this season, then this episode is for you! Listen in to to hear the top 5 mistakes we're seeing gymnasts make with their nutrition in 2025 and how to avoid them. In this episode you'll hear about: In day balance; is your gymnast skipping meals? Hey guys! I am so excited about today's episode of the PerformHappy podcast because I'm sitting down with none other than Olivia Troutman, former University of Oklahoma gymnast, international elite athlete, and a true resilience master. Olivia has achieved so much in her career—she's a four-time NCAA national champion, NCAA vault champion, and a 10-time All-American. She's also celebrated two NCAA team championships and is now coaching at the University of Oklahoma, continuing to inspire the next generation of gymnasts. But what really stands out about Olivia isn't just her long list of accomplishments—it's her mindset. Today's podcast topic is all about how sometimes parents and athletes are in denial when it comes to their gymnast's nutrition. It's not a unique state as we all engage in it. But what's normal isn't always what's best; especially when it comes to making sure your gymnast is properly fueled. This is a topic that's so relevant to the parents of gymnasts, particularly during the super busy and intense competition season months. But struggles and denial regarding your gymnast's nutrition is only going to lead to more struggles in the gym when it matters most. So today, let's address some of the reasons why I see parents and gymnasts put fueling on the back burner. Because at the end of the day, the sooner you get the nutrition help you know you need, the sooner things will improve. In this episode you'll hear about: Understanding denial and it's impact on gymnast nutritionCommon barriers to nutrition supportThe ramifications of delaying taking action Links & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Episode 116: Six surprising things that happen after fixing your gymnast's fueling issuesEpisode 81: Force Feeding or Adequate Fueling?Connect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or christinaandersonrdn.comJoin our Pre-Season Gymnast Nutrition CHALLENGE for level 4/5-10 and elite gymnasts + parents on October 6-8th!

Today I'm peeling back the curtain to discuss a very nuanced topic that definitely deserves a spotlight of it's own: the role of vitamins and minerals in your gymnast's diet. I'm taking you into the world of minerals for gymnasts and the impact they have on their overall long-term health. Here at The Gymnast Nutritionist, I talk a lot about addressing adequate fueling first; and that will never change. Too many gymnasts are underfueled and are ticking time bombs as a result. But once the underfueling issues are fixed, the work doesn't stop there...We know that minerals are the spark plugs that influence everything in the body, especially hormone function, muscle function, neurochemicals and so on and so forth. And there is a delicate balance of how these minerals interact and are absorbed by the body. So it's not just a simple fix of buying ALL the supplements at the store and hoping to see results. In this episode you'll hear get a quick primer into minerals for gymnasts: Understanding overall mineral needs in athletes Iron deficiency and it's implicationsThe connection between minerals and hormonal health Links & Resources The Balanced Gymnast® Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Episode 104: Nutrient Density, Real Food and GymnasticsEpisode 08: Gymnast Nutrition + EnduranceConnect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or christinaandersonrdn.com

The last episode of Hard Knocks felt like a propaganda-filled “thanks for doing this” from HBO to the Giants. The Jets did call the Giants to try and trade up to 6. Who did the Jets want at 6? Probably Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze. Everyone around here deserves a building better than MetLife Stadium. How about a new MSG with a sphere top over the West Side Highway? The Giants have a game-changer at WR for the first time in years. Phil Simms blames Joe Klecko for his bad knees. There are too many busts in the NFL Draft for teams to applaud after every pick. We rewatch the Jets first phone call to Zach Wilson when they drafted him. Jerry is back for an update but first we discuss famous male gymnasts in Team USA's history. Shaun Morash did not take the news of Gerrit Cole being scratched very well. Rickie Ricardo almost slipped up saying Jazz Chisholm's name. Rickie told Suzyn Waldman about his idea to gift Emmanuel Berbari a facial for his birthday. In the final segment of the hour, Gio had a teachable moment yesterday with his daughter and a dying bird. Where did the word “jism” originate?
