There are certain lessons we can only learn in "The Wilderness School of Leadership!" Dan Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy), Bryan Clark, and Nat Crawford talk about that as they continue in 1 Samuel 29.
Inside this episode with Mitch Hampton This episode is an exciting one for us in that it contains many firsts: for one it our first show featuring a gallery and for another it is the first with two guests who are also a married couple. Among the many reasons for me creating and then hosting our podcast is that I was most fortunate to grow up in the New York City of the 1970s and 80s, in which I was literally raised on institutions such as MOMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cawdrey Gallery represents a most important feature of our current art world - that which is representative of worlds of art in places away from the coasts of these United States. Nancy and Steve have had quite the eclectic lives since they also had a long career, off all things, running a Wilderness School. I can't think of a better example of the pluralism and diversity to which we are devoted on our podcast than this conversation with Steve and Nancy Cawdrey of Montana. More about our friends at the wonderful Cawdrey Gallery, here: ( please not this is an abbreviated version for space- for our full article visit our show Facebook page and Cawdrey Gallery Website) The Cawdrey Gallery proudly hosts contemporary artists of the American West. The spirit of the West is as dynamic and diverse as ever, and we aim to showcase much more than just Western Art through a range of subject matter and mediums from sublimely painted vistas to animated sculptures. We facilitate and inspire fine art experiences with our collectors, artists, and community. When gallery owner and artist Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey began painting in Montana about 25 years ago, she wanted to express how it really FELT living in Big Sky Country. Nancy along with her husband Steve and son Morgan, opened their first gallery in Bigfork, MT. In 2017 the gallery relocated to Whitefish and expanded to represent more than 20 artists working in over 10 different media. Making art and experiencing art is about rediscovering the world, moment by moment, and our hope is that it invites us to linger and remain in that moment of awe. American Western art is not only about preserving a storied past—but it is also about capturing and reimagining our present. Visit us at Cawdrey Gallery to see a large variety of original fine art and high quality reproductions all in one space. Be sure to also walk around charming downtown Whitefish, Montana, home to many talented artists including western photographers, western wildlife sculptors, unique ceramicists and potters, and a variety of contemporary fine artists. More about Nancy Cawdrey and her beautiful work, here: “Whatever medium I am working in, I like to mix color on the surface of the painting–giving the work more immediacy and spontaneity–what I call spirited silk painting. On silk I can really float brilliant color with spirit and gusto.” Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey paints with vibrant French dyes on crepe de chine silk fabric adapting her experience in water media to express her renowned contemporary style. Cawdrey's signature western motif paintings, vibrant florals, and commanding wildlife masterworks can be found in museums and private collections around the world. In 2020, Nancy was honored to launch a one-woman traveling museum exhibit titled “Forever Glacier” which focuses on the mammals native to Glacier National Park. This week's free story comes from the Martin & Sylvia's Nature School collection. It's called "Kings and Queens of the Forest." When Martin leaves for Wilderness School, he can't help but feel envious for Sylvia's project with Daddy: preparing for May Day by building a huge bonfire and cooking Beltane Bannock Bread. This has his attention all morning until Eva gives his group an inspiring May Day question: What kind of King or Queen of the Forest do you want to be? His answer helps Martin understand not only the gift of May Day, but of leadership itself. If you enjoyed that story, there are hundreds and hundreds more where that came from. It's like school for elk hunting and the classroom is the Snowcrest Mountains. The bonus is it all happens on a backpacking expedition. I am referring to a new course offered by Montana Wilderness school called backpacking skills for aspiring hunters. The Bozeman-based school has been taking students on expeditions for ten years with a mission of providing “empowering expeditionary wilderness courses to youth that foster personal growth and cultivate a conservation ethic through connecting with remote landscapes and wild places” In the last couple of years they have offered this course that takes a fundamental approach to backpacking skills but adds the technical skills pursuing large game in the backcountry. On this episode, Ryan Peters, wilderness program manager for Montana Wilderness School talks about the course.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week's free story comes from the Martin & Sylvia's Nature School Introduction collection. It's called "Part One: What to Do on Thursdays." This collection introduces the Martin & Sylvia: Nature School Series. In the Nature School Introduction, the idea for a "Nature School" is born. It's summer's end, and Momma, Martin, and Sylvia reflect on all the things they loved about the summer season: hikes, walks along the beach, blueberry picking, climbing trees and collecting bird feathers. Then Momma suggests that they keep the summer outdoor fun alive all year long: “Every Thursday, let's have Nature School!” And so Martin joins the Goose-eye Wilderness School, and Sylvia and her friend Sophia create a Nature home-school. From wild craft cooking to outdoor games to building projects to tree identification, Nature School is a year of unfolding learning and fun. In Part One: Momma, brother, and sister decide they want to dedicate one day a week for outside 'nature' school and they set intentions about it. By the next day, Martin is enrolled in the Goose-eye Wilderness school and Momma has formed a homeschool nature day with Sylvia's friend Sophia. "Wow!" they think, "Making intentions really works!" This week's free story comes from the Martin & Sylvia collection. It's called "The Sit Spot." After a day at Wilderness School, Martin tells his sister and Daddy about finding a "sit spot" or personal spot in the woods. Sylvia is inspired to find one herself, as is Daddy — but Momma is feeling she needs to focus on getting the house ready for guests. But in the final moments before the guests arrive, she decides to find a "sit spot" and has the most magical moment of all. If you enjoyed that story, there are hundreds more where that came from. How do we be more on purpose, and less on point and create learning with rigour but not rigidity? How do we elevate voice, choice and initiative knowing that as we do so we create more freedom and more responsibility? In this first episode of our 10-part special series on Learner Agency we discuss Learning On Purpose. This is the first lesson for agency shared by global education expert Charlie LeadBeater in conversation with three educators from different schools across South Australia. In our conversation we blend the conceptual with the concrete, exploring philosophy, practice and product and hear how schools have journeyed towards activating agency in their community. Three brilliant teachers join us for our conversation today: Rhiannon Giles from Wilderness School, Bec Ingham from Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary and Angela Phillips from Westminster. We discuss what purposeful learning looks like and how identity meets intent when who we are powerfully intersects with what we want to achieve. As our educator colleague share their learning journeys, both inner and outer, we discuss the connection between values and achievement, how they endure and evolve, and how if we connect purpose, commitment, and reflection we can create high agency learning experiences that lead to increased growth and mastery. This series is a special collaboration between The Learning Future and AISSA: The Association of Independent Schools of South Australia. Each of these ten podcast episode correspond to one of 10 lessons on Learning Agency from the soon to be published Centre for Strategic Education Paper authored by Charlie LeadBeater. We hope you enjoy the first conversation, Learning On Purpose.Agency is a core feature for the emerging future of learning. Resource deficit is nothing new. Once delivered from their oppressors, God’s chosen folk – the Israelites (led by Moses) – spent a really long time in Wilderness School learning the hard lessons of trust one day at a time. Now, amidst 2020 uncertainty, these ancient texts of Exodus serve as a fresh source of hope for modern day wilderness wanderers.

After college Joanna interned at SOAR and then was a field guide at True North Wilderness and then at the Wilderness School in Connecticut. She would go onto work at two Universities where she was an academic coach for students on academic probation. From these experiences, she was inspired to start her consulting practice. As a field guide, Joanna learned how to "work with those who are not self-motivated" and encourages young people interested in wilderness therapy to start as a field guide.

Exodus 16:1-5, 12-21 | In the wilderness, God’s people have an opportunity for us to discover what’s next in God’s future and how we are called to be a part of that. They are like schools that teach us how to live as God’s covenant people and give us opportunities to practice faithfulness to God’s covenant way.
