Trevor Cichosz has more individual podiums at World’s Toughest Mudder than anyone else alive. Cichosz has been on the men’s podium every single year since 2014, a five-year streak that is still ongoing. Starting in 2014 Cichosz has finished World’s Toughest Mudder in 3rd place, 2nd place, 1st place, 3rd place, and most recently, 2nd place in 2018. If that pattern holds up Cichosz will claim his 2nd World’s Toughest Mudder championship this November in Atlanta. --- Free Sticker Update: We have reached our goal of 150 reviews in the U.S. Apple Podcast store! Kris Mendoza is one of the most beloved members of the Tough Mudder community. Kris has run World’s Toughest Mudder every year since 2014, finishing with 50 miles in his first year. In 2017 he was on the first-place relay team and in 2018 he won his first individual World’s Toughest Mudder championship. He won the race with a dramatic pass of Trevor Cichosz, the Men's Champion in 2016. Mendoza passed Cichosz less than one mile from the finish line. Mendoza’s win in 2018 was the closest, most dramatic finish in World’s Toughest Mudder history. Mendoza is also a doctor, working as a dental anesthesiologist near his training grounds in Colorado. --- Welcome to Champion's Week on World's Toughest Podcast. Ryan Atkins is the only six-time champion of World’s Toughest Mudder. No one else has won it more than three times and no other man has won it more than twice. Atkins won his first title in 2013 with the first-ever 100-mile performance at World’s Toughest Mudder. He also won individual titles in 2014 and 2017 as well as winning team titles in 2015, 2016, and 2018. His 2016 team performance with Jon Albon of 105 miles earned them the bonus prize of $100,000. Atkins also holds the record for highest mileage at a single WTM with 110 miles in 2017. Atkins is undoubtedly the greatest athlete in endurance OCR. Rea Kolbl is the reigning women’s champion of World’s Toughest Mudder. Her win in Atlanta in 2018 was a successful defense of her first win in Las Vegas 2017. With her back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018 she became the first back-to-back individual winner since Amelia Boone in 2014 and 2015. Her 90 miles in 2017 tied the record for a woman set by Amelia Boone in 2012. Atkins and Kolbl are the only past winners to win back to back individual titles at two different race venues. Atkins won in 2013 in New Jersey and 2014 in Vegas. Kolbl won in 2017 in Vegas and 2018 in Atlanta. Ryan and Rea talked with us from a boat landing in Fiji. They will be teammates competing on the new Eco-Challenge airing on Amazon Prime in 2020. Stay tuned for more on the Eco-Challenge next year. --- Welcome to Champion's Week on World's Toughest Podcast. What works for one athlete may not work at all for another athlete. As part of their race fueling strategy, many runners at WTM like to use "real" food such as sandwiches, beef jerky, or even pizza. But what if you were not able to get the race fuel that best served your body? What if you could no longer get the pizza you needed to run your best race? Brian Thompson has been investigating this very thing since 2016 on his Investigative Journalism Program (or I.J.P) called "Whatever Happened to Pizza at McDonald's. The last event of the weekend of World's Toughest Mudder is called "The Bar Crawl". It's not called that because people crawl from bar to bar though. It's called the Bar Crawl because everyone is so sore, they have to crawl to get to the bar. Or at least that's the story we heard from our first guest this episode. We are joined by six guests we talked to at the bar crawl the night after World's Toughest Mudder 2018. J.D. Allen is an Atlanta local and veteran of multiple World's Toughest Mudders. He shares his thoughts on this years version of the race. Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter are the hosts of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast. Mike ran WTM for the first time this year and Katelyn pitted him all the way to 50 miles. Chris Wilkins and John Cheek came all the way from the UK to run World's Toughest Mudder. They have advice for international runners thinking about making the trip. Kenny Rotter ran 40 miles in the bitter cold this year and ran into Will Hicks multiple times over the weekend. Trevor recently ran 219 miles in a race across Scotland. During the 65 hours it took him to run, he did not sleep at all. He won the race. One interesting part of Trevor's race strategy is he makes sure his pit crew does NOT tell him standing in the race. He doesn't want to know what place he is in. This is part of his plan to "Race the course, not the competition." --- The OCR Report is live! Dr. Stuart Weiss is the worldwide Medical Director for Tough Mudder. World's Toughest Mudder 2018 looks to be one of the coldest WTM's in several years. We talk about what every runner should do to prevent hypothermia and to avoid injury while cold and tired. Dr. Weiss advises every runner: Listen to your body. Athletes are more likely to get injured when they get tired. Pay attention to your musculoskeletal fatigue, your fueling, and your hydration to give yourself the best chance of success on course. Dr. Weiss works with Intelligent Crowd Solutions. If you have medical training and would be interested in helping elite athletes at events like World's Toughest Mudder go to icrowd.com. Ryan Atkins has won World's Toughest Mudder five times. He is the only man to win the individual title more than once and he has done it three times. He has also won WTM as part of a four-man team and as part of a two-man team. He holds the record for most lifetime WTM miles AND most miles at an individual WTM. Ryan Atkins is the greatest World's Toughest Mudder athlete ever. This year Ryan will be competing in the Team Relay division with Ryan Woods, Brian Gowiski, and his wife, Lindsay Webster. This will be Ryan's first time in the Team Relay category. Ryan says the single greatest quality an athlete at World's Toughest Mudder must have is "Stoke and Desire". The race WILL get hard. It gets hard for everyone, even him. If you don't really want to be out there, and you don't have that Stoke or that Desire, the race will spit you out every time. It won't matter how much planning you do, and how many spreadsheets you prepare, and how dialed-in your nutrition plan is. If you don't have that Stoke and Desire it will all fall apart for you. --- TheOCRreport.com is live! Kris Mendoza is one of the seven men to run 100 miles or more at World's Toughest Mudder. Kris is coming off his biggest Tough Mudder win ever, a 45-mile performance at the eight-hour Toughest Mudder in Norcal last month. Kris passes along advice he received from the 2016 WTM Champ Trevor Cichosz. "The race doesn't begin until midnight." Spend the first 12 hours of the race running your own race and not worrying about what place everyone else is in. Don't burn yourself out early. Scott Brown may be the greatest OCR athlete to come out of Scotland. We haven't seen him at World's Toughest Mudder lately, but he is making his return this year in Atlanta. Scott ran World's Toughest Mudder every year from 2012 to 2015. His best year was 2015 when he finished with 80 miles and 5th Place overall. His 80 miles was the best finish by a European that year. After a two-year hiatus, Scott is ready to take on WTM again. Look for him near the top of the leaderboard. --- TheOCRreport.com is live! Tyler Nash has ran in every World's Toughest Mudder. "And walked in them too" he says. He recently completed the Moab 240, a 240 mile race in Moab, Utah and that experience has changed his outlook on World's Toughest Mudder. Tyler had a rough 2017 at WTM. We like to say we talk about "success and failure at the greatest event in OCR". Tyler is very honest about his race last year and the regrets he has. This is Episode #100 of World's Toughest Podcast! Thank you for listening! Celebrate with us by leaving a review on Apple Podcasts! Amelia Boone has dominated World's Toughest Mudder like no other woman ever. No other woman has won World's Toughest Mudder more than once. Amelia has won it three times. Only three people have won back-to-back individual titles at World's Toughest Mudder. Amelia is the only woman to do it, in 2014 and 2015. Amelia is the most high-profile athlete in the history of OCR. She talks in this episode how that still sounds odd to her. She started out the same way everyone starts out, running a Tough Mudder with her friends. Amelia talks about how WTM is a special race to her and how much she hates to miss it this year. She says to pencil her in for 2019. --- TheOCRreport.com is live! Check out the new website from the people behind World's Toughest Podcast, Overcome and Run, and Obstacle Running Adventures. Morgan Mckay joins us to talk about Toughest Mudder East taking place this weekend near Boston. Morgan won 3rd Place at World's Toughest Mudder 2016. She was on pace for another podium finish at World's Toughest 2017 when she was injured coming off an obstacle. She was medically disqualified and unable to complete the race. We talk about her injury, Iceland, and her recent Guinness World Record for fastest 10k while carrying 100 pounds. Morgan will be competing against OCRWC Enduro-24 Champion and fellow WTM vet Allison Tai at Toughest Mudder East. We are halfway through the Toughest Mudder season, with four of the eight Toughest and World's Toughest events completed. In today's episode, we talk about each Toughest Mudder so far this year. We compare each Toughest with each other and get a preliminary answer to the question: "Which Toughest is the toughest Toughest?". We also talk with a podium finisher from each of the three most recent Toughest Mudder races. Tom Tweddell finished second at Toughest Mudder UK. He ran 45 miles in 7:23, one minute behind the first place Tristan Steed. Lachlan Dansie finished first at Toughest Mudder Australia. He ran 45 miles in 8:18. Lachlan has won the Australia-based 24 hour Enduro Race four years running. Kristopher Mendoza finished second at Toughest Mudder Midwest. He ran 50 miles in 8:06, 12 minutes behind the first place Ryan Atkins. 12 minutes is the closest anyone has come to catching Atkins at a Toughest Mudder. This is a loooong episode. Allison Tai and Shaun Stephens-Whale are the Toughest Mudder South women's and men's second-place finishers. Allison ran 40 miles for her second-place finish. Allison's personal best for Toughest Mudder is her 45-mile performance at Chicago in 2017 to secure the Toughest Mudder Series win. Shaun Stephens-Whale ran 45 miles for his second-place. Shaun and eventual winner Ryan Atkins traded the lead back and forth for the first 30 miles. Before we talk with Allison and Shaun we take a deep dive into the numbers of Toughest Mudder South. Europe's Toughest Mudder preview! Ian Kay joins us to talk about the weather, the course, and the obstacles for Europe's Toughest Mudder. Europe's Toughest Mudder is an eight-hour race on a five-mile looped course. The man and woman who complete the most laps in eight hours are crowned "Europe's Toughest Mudder". Before we talk with Ian we talk about the prizing for the race, including the fact that winning Europe's Toughest Mudder is worth about 10% more than winning a Toughest Mudder in America. We review a few common questions about the rules and then we talk about the elites to watch this weekend. The biggest news with the elites is the one who WON'T be there. Jon Albon is competing in the Trail Running World Championships this weekend in Spain and will not be in the U.K. to defend his title from last year. --- Do you have a moment from your experience at Tough Mudder that you would like to share with the audience of World's Toughest Podcast? Michelle Ford is one of three people and the only woman to win a podium at World’s Toughest Mudder and TMX. Those other two? Ryan Atkins and Hunter McIntyre, two of the indisputably best athletes in OCR. Michelle finished in third place at TMX Sacramento recently. TMX is a one-mile race combining classic Tough Mudder obstacles with functional fitness stations such as box jumps and pull ups. Michelle talks about her experience at TMX and talks about why the sub-20 minute race was more miserable than the entire 24 hours she spent at World’s Toughest Mudder. --- World's Toughest Podcast is excited to partner with Merrell again to give away a pair of shoes every month to listeners of the show. Francis Lackner and Sue Harvey-Brown join us in this episode. You may have seen Francis on a Tough Mudder course in his jolly red suit carrying his running partner, Santa Claus. Santa has "run" 39 Tough Mudder events. Francis plans to cross the 100 event mark himself in 2018. In June of 2017, Francis lost his mom to cancer. A few months later Francis was running Toughest Mudder Chicago. His mom was supposed to there with him. On his second lap, the emotions became too much and he felt ready to quit. Instead of quitting, Francis and Ryan Cray decided to spend some extra time at the top of Everest 2.0, just helping people over the obstacle. The penalty for failing the obstacle was an additional 3/4 mile run. That extra time turned into an hour, and then into two hours, and then into four hours. Francis and Ryan left Everest to finish their second lap after 5 and a half hours on top of Everest. After Toughest Mudder ended at 8:30 Francis spent the morning honoring his mother. He passed out red plastic roses to TMHQ staff, volunteer, and runners. The roses represented "One more day above the roses" the title of a song that became important to Ryan and his mother as she battled with cancer. Ryan tells the story of the roses and everything that happened that weekend. Sue Harvey-Brown is the liaison between Merrell and Tough Mudder. When Merrell is working on a new initiative with Tough Mudder, odds are Sue is not far from the work being done. Merrell and World's Toughest Podcast are partnering to bring you the Merrell Mudder Moment. This is a moment that happened to you or someone you know on a Tough Mudder course. Maybe the moment happened off the course and Tough Mudder was how you conquered it, or found peace with it. Or maybe Tough Mudder was how you honored someone like Francis and his mother. We're going to highlight a new Merrell Mudder Moment every other month in 2018. Honorees will receive a pair of Merrell trail running shoes like the All Out Crush 2.0 and the opportunity to share their story on World's Toughest Podcast. To submit your Merrell Mudder Moment, email Worldstoughestpodcast@gmail.com with Merrell Mudder Moment or MMM in the subject line. In the body of the email tell your story. What happened? After taking her lumps from the course and the sandstorm she joined the World’s Toughest community online and came back ready for anything her next time. Heather is a member of Team Three Rex. They are best known for their WTM Pit Crew headband fundraiser. In 2017 they sold 500 headbands with all the proceeds going to charity. Before we talk with Heather we talk about the race that wasn’t. Toughest Mudder West is this weekend. This is the first Toughest Mudder of the eight-race series for 2018. Deanna Brasz and I talk about the course, the obstacles, and what people can expect from this cold, difficult race. Deanna was one of the stars of Tougher Mudder in 2017. She ran 10 Tougher Mudders, with seven podiums, and four first place finishes. Three times last year she ran Tougher on Saturday morning and then ran the eight-hour Toughest Mudder on Saturday night. Before we talk with Deanna, we talk about the elite competition at Toughest Mudder West. On the men’s side Ryan Atkins is the heavy favorite. He will face competition from Kris Mendoza, Glenn Racz, and Tyler Nash, as well a few possible surprises. On the women’s side, four reigning champions will face off. World’s Toughest Mudder champion Rea Kolbl will face off against Toughest Mudder series champion Allison Tai, Spartan World Champion Lindsay Webster, and Spartan Ultrabeast World Champion Morgan Mckay. --- World's Toughest Podcast is excited to partner with Merrell again to give away a pair of shoes every month to listeners of the show. On today’s episode we talk with the only four people to compete in all six Toughest Mudder races this year. Jim Campbell, Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan, Sara Knight, and Mark James ran each Toughest Mudder race this year in Los Angeles, Atlanta, the UK, Philadelphia, Whistler, and Chicago. You want to know which Toughest was the toughest Toughest. We start with each of them telling which of the six races they thought was the toughest. Then we talk with them about the Toughest Mudder series as a whole, and about each race individually. We wrap up by getting each of their rankings of all six races. Which race was the toughest? Second toughest? All the way down to sixth toughest. And then finally, we assign point values to those rankings, add up the scores of each venue and give a definitive answer to the question: “Which Toughest was the toughest Toughest? Toughest Mudder Chicago Preview! Eric Dymesich joins us to talk about his WTM experience and preview the Toughest Mudder Chicago course. Eric is new to the WTM community, with one World’s Toughest under his belt. He earned his 50 mile bib in his first trip to Lake Las Vegas. Eric talks about some tips on how to get the brown bib in your first attempt as well as talking about why World’s Toughest Mudder was such a meaningful event in his life. Eric is an Iraq war veteran and he talks about how the camaraderie on the course at WTM is the closest thing he’s found to the military since he left the service. Toughest Mudder Chicago will be a flat course, but a wet course. Not only will the obstacles have you in and out of the water, there is a river crossing, and a HIGH chance of rain during the event. Wet = Cold. Bring your wetsuits. In addition to discussing the course, Will Hicks talks about the elites and who he expects to win. One dark horse: Amelia Boone. She hasn’t announced anything but Will thinks she’s going to make a surprise appearance to claim an Elite Contender spot and secure a shot at $50,000 in Vegas this November. Before we talk to Allison, Will talks about Toughest Atlanta and shares a few stories about the course. He loved it. It's interesting to get a quick insight into what others thought about the event. Will announced in this episode that he's giving away his personal tickets to Toughest Europe and Toughest Philly. He says if you want his ticket though, you're going to have to work for it while you're at the event. Will is looking for audio content for the podcast in exchange for his ticket. Tiffany Aab is my guest this week. You know Tiffany as the international TV Star of "Road to World's Toughest Mudder" on CBS Sports last December. Tiffany is very honest about her struggles with a bad marriage and cancer. She competed in her first WTM in 2016 exactly one year after being declared cancer free. The connection and friendship formed though Tough Mudder is important to her. “The community has helped me be a better version of myself than I was last year” She says people don’t need to be intimidated by WTM. For most people, “It’s all about our own race”. WE GOT A SHOE DEAL! WITH MERRELL! Merrell and World's Toughest Podcast will be giving away a FREE pair of shoes this month and every month leading up to WTM 2017. We're kicking it off with THREE PAIR of the Merrell Agility Peak Flex. Be sure to visit the World's Toughest Podcast Facebook page at Facebook.com/WorldsToughestPod to find out how to enter.
