Our next guest, Miguel Medina, graciously welcomed us into his home nestled in the Santa Fe hills. As we settled into his garage, a space transformed into his sanctuary, we couldn't help but feel the powerful energy that emanates from this long-distance and obstacle runner. Miguel stands among a select few individuals on this planet who have pushed the limits of human endurance beyond 100 miles, defying the boundaries that most of us perceive as unattainable.Miguel's journey began in Torrance, California, where he was born into a family with diverse backgrounds. His father worked in TV production, and his parents' divorce led to a life marked by relocations between Mexico and California.About a decade ago, Miguel's path led him to Durango, a location that became his training ground and a hub for ultra-running athletes. During this time, he found love and companionship with his fiancée, who shares his home and his life's journey. Our conversation delved into the challenges of maintaining a deep passion for an art or sport while simultaneously nurturing a personal relationship. Miguel candidly shared the sacrifices that often accompany such dedication and the delicate balance required to harmonize these facets of life. One of the intriguing aspects Miguel discussed was how his ADHD, often considered a challenge, becomes an asset during training. The hyper-focus that accompanies his condition allows him to immerse himself completely, achieving a state of meditation that excludes all external distractions, even his own sense of self, during his grueling 24-hour runs.Miguel's journey also encountered a significant hurdle during his time as a student at UCLA, when he temporarily lost feeling in his legs and found himself on crutches and even a wheelchair. This unexpected twist, however, didn't deter him from pursuing his passion and rising to his remarkable accomplishments.Beyond his role as a professional athlete, Miguel also works as a medical interpreter, a career he deeply values. Helping people navigate challenging medical situations resonates with him, and he believes it's his calling to be a compassionate guide for those in need.Join us as we delve into Miguel's life, exploring the dedication, passion, and sacrifices that drive a professional athlete, and yet, at the same time, embrace the beauty and regularity of living a balanced life. For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. Miguel Medina has been an entrepreneur for as long as he can remember. From selling backpacks at traffic lights to doing magic tricks at bars and selling candy to his classmates to earn extra money, Miguel is a pure entrepreneur. So when his travel startup Isibit was torpedoed by the pandemic, he decided to solve a big Latin American problem: improving the lives of the region's employees and team members. At least 23 million people transitioned to remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic in Latin America. Miguel is improving employees' well-being via a product specially designed to fit the growing remote working teams: a benefits management platform that allows companies to give virtual cards to their employees loaded with money for specific purposes. After working in huge companies such as Apple and Danone, Miguel shifted his career to begin working at Rappi, launching this startup in more than 25 cities in Latin America. He then decided to leave once again his comfort zone and found his own startup, Isibit, a company that through the pandemic transitioned to Plerk. In this episode, I sat down with Miguel to chat about what Plerk is doing to improve the quality of life for Latin America's workforce, and about how he decided to lean on his safety net to pivot Isibit and create a new startup when difficulties arose. Also, Miguel shared with us his story as a teenager magician and salesman, and how those experiences shaped him into the entrepreneur he is today. From magician to second-time entrepreneurAlthough the young Miguel was not planning on being an entrepreneur, his life experience led him down the entrepreneurial path. He sold candies at school, and after taking several jobs since the age of 14, worked as a magician at bars and restaurants. Being a magician, Miguel was forced to play character roles that were nothing like his introverted “normal” self. Soon enough, he realized that he could fake a more extroverted personality until he was comfortable with talking to more people and being more outgoing.Since then, Miguel not only worked for some of the largest companies in the world, but also built an extensive community and network of people in Latin America he could lean on when times were rough. As Miguel explained, “magic only happens when you jump from a cliff.”Find out more about his journey through job and life experiences in this episode of Crossing Borders.Transitioning from Isibit to Plerk during a global pandemicAfter working as Regional Manager at Rappi, Miguel decided to start his own startup, Isibit, in October 2019. Isibit was an all-in-one platform for business travel, an idea that sounded promising, but was torpedoed by the pandemic.. Although Isibit was accepted into the YCombinator Summer 2020 batch, the startup was doomed. In this episode of Crossing Borders, Miguel talks more about how important it is as an entrepreneur to count on a network of people, a community that can help you endure hard times and his process pivoting from Isibit to PlerkReplacing paper vouchers with virtual cardsBefore Plerk, companies gave employees benefits via paper vouchers to use for transportation or at restaurant venues. These vouchers created a problem that the gift card industry also has: “floating” unspent money, and that still constitutes an expense for the companies. Learn how Antonio Martínez, Miguel Medina and Angel Arias launched Plerk's virtual debit card to give employees personalized perks and benefits worldwide. Companies deposit money on the cards, which the employees spend according to their company's benefits program rules. After launching in January 2021, already in July 2021 Plerk announced that it had raised $1M in Pre-Seed funding from Y Combinator, Magma Partners, 500 Startups and more.Learn more about Plerk's project in this Crossing Borders episode and about how it was born in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.Outline of this episode:[00:34] - About Plerk[03:10] - Miguel's background [04:55] - Work experience before being an entrepreneur[07:30] - Launching Rappi in Latin American cities[09:20] - Turning point of Miguel's coming of age[11:05] - Biggest lessons learned at Rappi[12:10] - Making his own path[14:20] - The origins of Plerk[16:40] - Overcoming obstacles in entrepreneurship[18:55] - Creating an ecosystem with Plerk[21:23] - How fintechs are disrupting the industry[22:40] - Miguel's recommendations[23:10] - Advice to younger self[23:40] - Next years for PlerkResources and people mentioned:Miguel MedinaNathan LustigAntonio MartínezAngel AriasPlerkIsibitRappiDanoneAppleYCombinatorMagma Partners500 StartupsBook How to win friends and influence people

#57: Miguel Medina -- The Journey of an Elite Ultra Obstacle Course Athlete

Like a Bigfoot

This week's guest represents everything the Like a Bigfoot Podcast strives to showcase. Grit, determination, intelligent training, and pushing through devastating obstacles to ultimately achieve greatness. I met Miguel Medina last January during a 50k "fatass" training run from Nederland to Boulder. While running together I instantly realized a few things: Miguel is fast....I mean FAST and he is very intentional with his training, mobility, and recovery. I felt so lucky to spend a few hours picking his brain about living life as a pure well-rounded athlete. I should probably mention he's an elite ultra obstacle course racer who has numerous podium finishers in a wide variety of obstacle course races and in 2014 his team won the World's Toughest Mudder (with Mark Jones, Hunter Mcintyre, and Dennis Wayne Welch). In other words, he's one of the best athletes I've ever had the pleasure of running with. In this episode Miguel shares his story from "Gamer" with chronic back pain to elite athlete. It's intense, raw and is one of the most inspiring stories we've shared on this podcast. I'm so grateful to hear his story and to be able to share it with you! We also chat about how awesome it is to live and train in Durango, Colorado, strategies to manage emotions during team events, positivity and gratitude during intense races, and his current experience racing the Toughest Mudder Midwest. Miguel just placed 5th in the Toughest Mudder Midwest in which he completed 45 miles of obstacles in 7 hours and 50 minutes (which is INSANELY FAST). He is currently running through the San Juans preparing for the Spartan Ultra Beast in October and the Worlds Toughest Mudder in November (with his teammate Mark Jones). If you want to perform optimally in a Spartan Race, Tough Mudder or any Running event for that matter; it's important that you address the WAY you run before you concern yourself with HOW MUCH you run. There is quite a bit of confusion that exists in relation to running stride frequency vs. heart rate. It seems for many to attain a desired higher cadence can only come with a greater less efficient cost of work. Coach Diaz has asked his wing man Miguel Medina to join him as he attempts to shed light on proper running mechanics and unravel the cadence/heart rate frustration.

A while ago, my wing man Miguel Medina and I (Richard Diaz) did a Q-n-A show in where we took questions from our friends on social media.  We ran out of time and tabled a page full of questions we promised to get to at a later date. As it turns out, this is that later date! I had to roll solo but I hope I addressed the questions presented with some clarity, questions like… “How much running should you do to prepare for an obstacle race”? “How can you measure heart rate effectively relative to grip strength training”? “How can you tighten up loose ligaments”? And much more… thanks to those who wrote in.  This is a pretty quick, down and dirty episode; you should have plenty of time to give it a listen.

In this episode I talk to Miguel Medina and Yancy Culp about what sort of training you should be doing during the off season. As you may already know, Yancy Culp is the coach behind Yancy Camp, and Miguel Medina is one of his elite athlete coaches. As a member of team Medina on Yancy Camp I knew they both would have amazing ideas. You will hear from both about how the off season is a good time to build that aerobic base, and slow down a bit on the High Intensity Interval Training that we are all used to doing in OCR. Also, Miguel shares with us that you should be spending some time getting yourself into other sports/ fitness hobbies that will help keep you from getting burned out of running and OCR, but will also keep you active and improving your overall fitness. We also talk a bit about Worlds Toughest Mudder and how amazing of an event it was. The three of us got to spend some time together at the event, so it was a good time to catch up and share some of our experiences. Episode 108 - In today's show, we talk to with 3 top finishers from this year's World's Toughest Mudder. Allison Tai is like many Canadian athletes we have met in recent months. She's sweet, humble, and really good at obstacle racing. She won the Edmonton Spartan Sprint in July and the Canadian Spartan Ultra Beast in September. She then turned in an impressive 4th at the Spartan Super in Sacramento a few weeks later. At WTM, she beat all but 24 of the men and bested every woman other than Amelia Boone, completing 14 laps and 70 miles before time ran out. Despite great credentials, Miguel Medina and Hunter McIntyre showed up under the radar to WTM with Team Wolfpack Spartan. They then spent the next 24 hours (plus) fighting off Under Armour Team Australia to take home the 1st place team prize.
