This episode is a replay of an interview I did circa 2017 with patent attorney Stephan Kinsella.Kinsella is the author of "Against Intellectual Property," and in our time together, he argues that IP laws, particularly patents and copyrights, are incompatible with traditional property rights and hinder innovation and progress. The conversation explores the origins of these laws, their impact on musicians and other creatives, and practical advice for navigating the current system while protecting artistic integrity. The discussion also delves into Austrian economics and how it provides a framework for understanding the issues with IP laws. Kinsella foresees a future where the increasing ease of circumventing these laws will pressure the industry to adapt to more free-market principles.Episode highlights:00:24 Stefan Kinsella on Intellectual Property02:43 Understanding Property Rights06:45 Austrian Economics and Intellectual Property20:08 The History and Problems of Copyright26:59 Practical Advice for Musicians42:13 Future of Intellectual Property44:23 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsResources mentioned:Against Intellectual Property by Stephan KinsellaStephan's websiteAbout the guest:Stephan Kinsella is an attorney and libertarian writer in Houston. Recently, Jeff Landry, the Governor of Louisiana, raised a call for the conception of fresh guidelines necessitating student-athletes' presence during the performance of the national anthem at sports competitions. The impetus for this came after spectator consternation, when witnesses noticed the absence of the women's basketball team from Louisiana State University (LSU) during the national anthem at their regional final match this week. It seems tension brewed as the LSU team was noticeably missing from the court whilst the sounds of the national anthem filled the arena, shortly prior to their clash with the Iowa Hawkeyes. This absence was met with forceful criticism, and the unfurling controversy wasn't the only disappointment for the team as they faced a bitter defeat, with Iowa bagging the game 94-87. Images of the opposing squad of Iowa players, conspicuously standing hand in hand, symbolizing unity as the national anthem marked the preface to their event, yet with the absence of their LSU counterparts, provided a stark contrast. This drew attention to the fact that the LSU players had exited the court before our anthem was performed, triggering a wave of disquiet. Echoing the concerns of vocal critics, Governor Landry, from the Republican side, made a strong case, suggesting that educational officials should consider making it mandatory for athletes to maintain presence during national symbolic routines. Delinquent behavior could potentially result in severe ramifications, tailored to resonate with the importance of such national traditions. The governor shared his unique connection to the sport, revealing his mother's past as a women's high school basketball coach during the turbulent times of desegregation. He acknowledged his deep respect for both the sport and Coach Mulkey yet emphasized that upholding respect for the unity and protection represented by our national flag takes precedence. He argued that respect for the individuals who put their lives on the line to safeguard our freedom, and respect for our flag that binds us together as a nation, should be regarded as a higher calling. As such, it was time for college boards, inclusive of the Regent, to inculcate a policy mandating attendance during the national anthem by student-athletes, with the risk of forfeiting their athletic scholarships otherwise. In his view, such an approach is less about imposing sanctions and more about nurturing values of respect and patriotism - values that university coaches across the country should strive to inculcate in their charges. The national anthem is a unifying symbol, one that engenders a shared loyalty and love for our country, and presence during its performance should be a non-negotiable responsibility. In tandem to this unfolding narrative, Coach Mulkey herself has been caught in the spotlight after allegations made by The Washington Post. The published piece unleashed a series of criticisms against her, including displays of volatile behavior towards officials, less than ideal interactions with journalists, holding onto deep-seated resentments, and confrontations with her own players. Reports suggested an ongoing rift with player Brittney Griner, and the controversial feature in The Washington Post also pointed fingers at Coach Mulkey for displaying harshness towards homosexual players. These accusations have added fuel to an already blazing controversy, furthering the divide in opinions about Coach Mulkey and her coaching style. However, ready to fight back, the coach and her legal counsel have made clear their intention to counter these allegations. They are steadfast in their stance that the claims circulating in the media are baseless and damaging, and have even produced an affidavit to counteract one of the critical claims raised against her. The narrative is indicative of the high stakes and emotional tension plays within sports, the intricate balancing act of personal values, institutional policies, and public sentiment. This series of events has roped the realms of politics, athletics, and education policy into a twist that will potentially shape the future conduct of college athletes. While ensuring respect for the national anthem and the values it represents is a noble endeavor, it remains a challenge to strike a balance that honors both the freedom of individuals and the overarching unity of the nation. This is a conversation that ultimately throws into question the interconnectedness of personal actions, sporting conduct, and the charisma of our national unity. The conversation around policy change is situated within larger discourses about freedom, patriotism, unity, and respect, and so these critical developments make waves beyond the Louisiana border. Courses of actions taken in response to these circumstances could potentially set a precedent for other educational institutions nationwide, affecting the dialogue around student-athletes' conduct. Jeff Landry's call to action demonstrates the amalgamation of sports, education, and political framework into public discourse. While the controversy has brought to light issues of respect and unity, it also brings forth conflict and dialogue concerning personal freedom and institutional regulations. Regardless of the final resolution, conversations such as these challenge and shape our societal norms. More so as these events continue to unfold, they serve as a reminder of the delicate interplay between personal choices, athletic decorum, and societal expectations. The cautionary tale embedded in these series of events brings to light the necessity of fostering a culture that not only respects individual differences, but also cherishes what unifies us: a shared sense of patriotism and respect for the hard-won freedoms secured by the sacrifices of those who serve. In February of 2004, the body of a nude woman was discovered near an agricultural research station for Louisiana State University (LSU). The crime scene was processed and it was discovered that the woman had suffered a deep slash to her neck and there were ligature marks all around her neck. Her body had been positioned in a way so that trauma to her genitals would clearly be seen by anyone who found her. Investigators found signs that she had been dragged to the scene, tire tracks nearby, and 13 empty beer cans. The body was determined to be Donna Johnston, and she was the final victim of Sean Vincent Gillis' 10 year killing spree. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder | Murder by Slashing, Stabbing, or Strangulation | Body Mutilation | Dismemberment |Cannibalism |Sexual Assault Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Quince: Get affordable luxury for everyone on your list with Quince! Today's storyteller is Dr Jonathon Valente! Jonathon is a longtime dear friend of mine who does all kinds of interesting bird and wildlife research and so I'm excited to share this conversation with you! We first met at Louisiana State University (LSU) back in I think like 2007, when I was finishing up my bachelor's degree and he was starting his master's degree. I then joined the same research lab to begin my master's degree right after my undergrad graduation, so we were lab mates for a few years as well. This conversation consists mainly of the questions I've always wanted to ask him and never really had the excuse to, like how did you end up in the wildlife field, how did you end up at LSU, what happened next, interspersed with conversations about wildlife, birds, research, etc. Also, there's a brief and hilarious bird interlude around 20 minutes in because what else could you possibly expect when 2 bird people chat on Zoom?!? I hope you enjoy this conversation! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and Twitter @storytellers42. Dr. Turner, a first-generation college student, is a Louisiana native (born and raised in Baton Rouge) who discovered his interest in psychology later in his undergraduate career while attending Louisiana State University (LSU). He originally had plans to become a pediatrician and go to medical school but after taking a child psychology course, he knew this was the right fit for him as he wanted to help children and families. In this podcast, Dr. Turner shares how this drive and passion helped guide him during his academic career as he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Texas A&M University. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Baltimore, MD through the Kennedy Krieger Institute which is a children's hospital affiliated with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Turner is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University where he teaches courses on multicultural psychology, research methodology, and child psychopathology. He is also a licensed clinical psychologist. In the clinical setting, he is known as “Dr. Earl” and he incorporated this into the title of his mental health podcast “The Breakdown with Dr. Earl” which focuses on issues related to Black men and boys. He also addresses the stigma in the Black community by changing the way people view seeking therapy or mental health. Dr. Earl increases awareness of, and treatment for, different types of mental health issues and highlights Black professionals and therapists on the show. Dr. “Earl” Turner is a mental health advocate and writes a blog “The Race to Good Health” and is Founder and Executive Director of Therapy for Black Kids (T4BK). He explains that the idea for T4BK came to him during the pandemic, but the content and website wasn't released until earlier this year in February. He recognized that as a result of the “subtle racial reckoning this last summer” most of the conversations were focused on adults and not so much on kids, specifically Black kids. Therefore, he created Therapy for Black Kids to provide information and resources to “help parents deal with the challenges of racial injustice and foster resilience to promote healthy development.” During the podcast interview, Dr. Turner's drive and passion shines through and he admits that his favorite approach is using cognitive theories in his research as it shapes our life and our interactions. When I asked him what the most important thing he has learned in life, he responded “continue fighting for whatever is important to you.” Connect with Dr. Turner: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram | Youtube | WebsiteConnect with the Show: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter https://vimeo.com/567216486 Interests and Specializations Over the last 10-15 years, Dr. Turner has served in leadership positions within the American Psychological Association (APA), published research, served on editorial boards, and provided therapy services for children, adolescents, and adults with behavioral and emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress management. Episode: 00043Release Date: February 22, 2021Description: Criminal activity, especially ones dealing with drugs and gang activity, rarely stay within a single jurisdiction; thus, coordinated intelligence sharing and deconfliction are prime goals and necessities to investigate these types of crimes and bring people to justice. In this episode, we interview someone who has had over 47 years of investigations and intelligence experience as an undercover deputy, intelligence detective, special agent, and criminal intelligence analyst: Ritchie Martinez. This jam-packed episode features an investigation involving an outlaw motorcycle gang (OMG) where Ritchie and his team served 87 warrants including bringing Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) charges to leading members of the gang; the members of this gang went on to create what we know today as the Hells Angels. Ritchie emphasizes the importance of intelligence sharing and networking across jurisdiction as well as give us a brief history lesson on the creation of the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA), High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA), Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS), and fusion centers. Cade York is the field goal kicker for Louisiana State University (LSU), and Will Reichard is the kicker for the University of Alabama. Both represent the finest kicking talent in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and are considered two of the best kickers in college football. In 2020 the SEC was stacked with talented kickers. York was named 1st Team All-SEC and Anders Carlson (Auburn University) was named 2nd Team All-SEC, and Harrison Mevis (Mizzou) was named 1st Team Freshman All-SEC. Reichard was left out, but so was Evan McPherson (University of Florida) and Jack Podlesny (University of Georgia.) Both York and Reichard were named semi-finalists for the 2020 Lou Groza Award which is an annual award given to college football’s top kicker. Reichard was named one of three Lou Groza Finalists with Jake Oldroyd (Brigham Young University) and the 2020 Lou Groza Award winner, Jose Borregales (University of Miami.) How does the Simple Kicking Index rank Cade and Will? Let’s start with the Reichard, who was the kicker for the 2021 CFP National Champions. Reichard had a breakout season in 2020 after an injury-plagued 2019 . He made 14/14 Field Goals with a Long of 52, and 84/84 PATs. A 100% season on field goals and extra points. Based on the distances of his kicks, the Simple Kicking Index determined that Reichard performed 12.65 points above expected which ranks 3rd overall. York, who was the kicker for the 2020 CFP National Champions ranked #2 overall. He made 18/21 field goals, including 6/7 from 50+. The Simple Kicking Index determined that York performed 13.86 points above expected. The Simple Kicking Kicker of the year was Jose Borregales who kicked 14.76 points better than expected. How does this compare to the previous 4 seasons? Both were in the top 20. Cade ranks #10, and Will ranks #17. Other kickers who are on the list are: Riley Patterson, University of Memphis, NFL Free Agent Matt Gay, University of Utah, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams (he made the list twice!) Cole Tracy, LSU, NFL Free Agent Sam Sloman, Miami University (Ohio), Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans Andre Szmyt, Syracuse University Jose Borregales, University of Miami, Florida International University Tyler Bass, Georgia Southern, Buffalo Bills Keith Duncan, University of Iowa, NFL Free Agent Nick Sciba, Wake Forest University Gabe Brkic, University of Oklahoma Rodrigo Blankenship, University of Georgia, Indianapolis Colts Jonathan Song, TCU, NFL Free Agent Dominik Eberle, Utah State, Las Vegas Raiders Cade York was a key asset to the LSU Tigers National Championship team led by Coach Ed Orgeron, and he improved in 2020. York was 7.63 points better than expected in 2019 making 21/26 field goals. He improved by 6.21 point year over year. This is like saying Michael Jordan averaged 30 points one season, and 35 points the next season. Both are really good, but he continues to improve. Reichard was hurt in 2019 and bounced back in 2020. But resilience is nothing new to Reichard. During his career at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama he suffered a torn ACL. He bounced back then earned a scholarship offer to the University of Alabama and started school shortly in January 2019. This episode covers what it is like to get recruited as a kicker. Reichard and York were both highly ranked in high school. In fact, York who graduated from Prosper High School in Prosper, TX, kicked a 59 yard field goal in the Under Armour All-America Game. Also, we cover how Coach Nick Saban and Coach Jeff Banks recruited Reichard out of Hoover. They explain how they got their college scholarships, what it is like winning a national championship, and how they feel playing in a game like LSU vs. Alabama every year. York recalls his 57 yard game winner against the University of Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in the fog.
Today's episode features 2 storytellers - Drs Patricia Suchy and Vince LiCata. They're both professors at Louisiana State University (LSU), Trish in the Department of Communication and Vince in the Department of Biology. Together they collaborated on a project communicating science through performance art, called "Persistence of Vision: Antarctica", and the end result is an immersive video installation using video portraits of modern day scientists in historical locations. That's a really succinct way of explaining this complex and amazing project but I don't want to understate how awesome this project is and how much I want to see it for myself! The locations were based off of photos by Herbert Ponting, and I start the episode with a very brief history of Antarctic exploration and then we talk about their project, their time in Antarctica, and how the idea came together. Angela Gabriel can be described in a lot of ways — she’s a real estate agent based in Baton Rouge, LA, a coach and mentor, a loving single mother to four children, a shooting survivor, a domestic violence victim, and an advocate. But above all, she’s one of God’s strongest warriors. Growing up, Angela always wanted to stand out and be different from everybody else. She went to the military despite her initial plans to study psychology and play volleyball at Louisiana State University. She studied interior design in college, and eventually got interested in real estate after her stint at construction. She learned everything about real estate from a coach. Afterward, she decided to focus on building and nurturing relationships to grow her team and business. But on the morning of February 2017, a fateful incident left her with nine shots on her upper body and paralyzed chest down. But not once did she allow herself to sink into rock bottom after everything that’s happened. Instead, she just kept going. She continued working while recovering in the hospital, was able to recruit four nurses to become realtors, and even got her rehab surgeon qualified to become a home buyer. Indeed, she turned that tragic event into a miraculous story full of hope, faith, and resilience, which opened up opportunities to help her advocate for people who can’t speak up for themselves. Now, her healing and self-discovery continue. Tune in as Angela emphasizes the importance of leverage and accepting help from others, getting a coach, and using real estate as a vehicle to find your true passion and purpose. She also shares with us some of her advocacies, including helping women who are victims of domestic abuse and people with special needs and disabilities. Truly, her incredible physical and mental strength helped her separate herself from everyone else and spend her new chapter in life helping others. Propagating Fig Varieties On this week’s episode, the guys talk about fig varieties and how to propagate new trees from existing ones. They talk about the different flavor profiles that can be present in a given fig variety. These can include berry, honey or sugar. Berry figs have more of a strawberry or fruity taste and tend to have a purple or red pulp. Honey figs have a caramel or molasses flavor and tend to have a golden pulp with yellow skin. Sugar figs have a basic, sweet sugary taste with a slight tannin flavor and will have a brown or amber pulp and dark skin. All fig varieties can be a combination of any of these categories, so the flavor scale is more of a continuum than a specific classification. Greg talks about open-eye versus close-eye figs and mentions how the close-eye trait is an adaptation that protects the figs from insects and makes the fruit more palatable. Travis mentions that figs are parthenocarpic, meaning they don't require fertilization to produce fruit. The fig, in fact, is simply a collection of unfertilized female reproductive organs. Greg explains that many people buy fig cuttings and rot them by themselves which sounds a little intimidating at first. However, Greg gives a little demonstration on how to take the fig cuttings and rot them for the garden. They also discuss the research that has been done at Louisiana State University (LSU) where many improved fig varieties have been developed over the years and released to the public. Greg recommends starting out with those fig varieties. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment, Greg has a satsuma orange that he got from a neighbor's tree. He explains that these types of citrus can be grown well in the deep south as long as the winters are not too cold. Travis brought a beet to taste test on the show. The beet is the Merlin variety, which has a very high sugar content compared to other red beet varieties. He also has a Purple Vienna Kohlrabi variety that is cold-tolerant and it has a similar taste to turnips. Kohlrabi is a great vegetable that's easy to grow and has excellent taste raw or cooked. We offer a Purple Vienna and a White Vienna Kohlrabi variety. They guys talk a little bit about adding fertilizer to there Mustard cover crops in the garden. The tool of the week is the diamond hoe. This is a great go-to tool that slides along the top of the soil surface to remove those small weeds in the garden. Viewer Questions Segment On the question and answer segment, the guys answer questions about drip irrigation and what type of hat Greg is wearing on the show. They explain the crops for which they prefer drip irrigation and those that they prefer to use overhead irrigation. Travis uses more drip irrigation than Greg, so it tends to be a matter of personal preference with some crops. Greg says it depends on the short-term or long-term crops and whether the crops warrant the drip tape or not. Short-term crops like summer squash Greg does not add drip tape on because he feels that they don't necessarily need the drip tape. On the other hand, crops like tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, pumpkins, or corn he always puts drip tape on those long-term crops. Greg mentions that his hat is a Filson. It is a waxed canvas hat which can get hot in the warmer months but is the perfect hat for the winter months. Tool of the Week Diamond Hoe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugTxcB9DCWY
