In honor of the Olympics, we are doing some stories about the Olympics in Greek mythology- and also some fun facts! Julianna gushes over the new Olympic sports (i.e. skateboarding, karate & surfing) and attempts to lead the episode herself as Sabryna takes a break. Also did you know that Apollo was good at… everything? The origins of the Olympics are definitely not as straightforward as they seem. At the Tokyo Olympics, 32-year-old Su Bingtian made history. Running for 100 meters, it looks like anyone can do it. It is the most primitive power and speed of human beings. In this oldest track and field event, Su not only became the first Chinese to stand in the Olympic 100-meter final, but also broke the Asian record with a time of 9.83 seconds, once again breaking Asian's speed limit.I set up and operate this channel alone, hoping to share the real China with the world as well as clarify misconceptions and lies against China. We chat about the 2021 Olympic Games which were delayed by the pandemic. Was it worth the wait? How have the Aussies been faring so far? Which was the best sporting moment so far? How good was the F bomb dropped by Kaylee McKeown after winning gold in the 200m backstroke? Also, how good was Dean Boxal's celebration after Ariarne Titmus won gold in the 200m freestyle final? All that and more in this episode. The 2020 Summer Olympics (Japanese: 2020年夏季オリンピック, Hepburn: Nisen Nijū-nen Kaki Orinpikku), officially the Games of the XXXII Olympiad (第三十二回オリンピック競技大会, Dai Sanjūni-kai Orinpikku Kyōgi Taikai) and branded as Tokyo 2020 (東京2020), is an international multi-sport event being held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, with some preliminary events that began on 21 July. Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013.[3] Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed to 2021 in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first such instance in the history of the Olympic Games (previous games had been cancelled but not rescheduled).[4] However, the event retains the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes.[5] It is being held largely behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency.[b] The Summer Paralympics will be held between 24 August and 5 September 2021, 16 days after the completion of the Olympics.[6] The 2020 Games are the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Japan, following the Tokyo 1964 (Summer), Sapporo 1972 (Winter), and Nagano 1998 (Winter) games.[c] Tokyo is the first city in Asia to hold the Summer Games twice. The 2020 Games are the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, following the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and preceding the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. The 2020 Games sees the introduction of new competitions as well as competitions that once were held but were subsequently removed. New ones include 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX and mixed gender team events in a number of existing sports, as well as the return of madison cycling for men and an introduction of the same event for women. New IOC policies also allow the host organizing committee to add new sports to the Olympic program for just one Games. The disciplines added by the Japanese Olympic Committee are baseball and softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding, the last four of which make their Olympic debuts.[7] Bermuda and the Philippines won their first-ever Olympic gold medals.[8][9] San Marino and Turkmenistan won their first-ever Olympic medals. My guest today is Vincent Hancock, the Olympic record holder and world record holder, a 2-time Olympic gold medalist, and 4-time world champion at skeet shooting. He specializes in shooting shotguns, but we talk about other firearms as well, as he knows his way around pretty much anything. Talk about dedication, sacrifice, and discipline - this guy shoots over 20 thousand rounds a year to practice, and explains to me exactly what his training entails. We talk a little bit about guns and gun control, and then about his journey, and how much it took for him to get to where he's at today. Even after winning gold medals, he's still observing what he's doing and trying to make adjustments. That's how people become the greatest in the world at what they do. Another inspiring Olympian who's heading to Japan, it's a pleasure to talk to such a skilled and interesting fellow Texan... “I love to win, but I hate to lose.” - Vincent Hancock Time Stamps: 00:00 - Introducing our guest Vincent Hancock. 07:04 - How often Olympic athletes from different sports meet each other. 10:22 - How long it takes to train for skeet shooting. 12:05 - When Vincent first shot a gun and how he got into competitive shooting. 15:43 - The differences in competitive shooting categories. 18:50 - How muscle memory works and the importance of not overtraining. 21:54 - When Vincent realized he had potential as a competitive shooter. 24:03 - The importance of parental support and why you need to be cocky. 28:39 - Who Vincent's biggest competition is. 32:00 - The importance of constantly practicing your sport. 33:10 - The changes that have happened in the sport since Vincent started 20 years ago. 37:35 - What it feels like to lose a competition. 40:33 - Playing Call of Duty and how realistic the game is. 46:07 - The different firearms Vincent owns and hunts with. 48:40 - The safety of shooting sports. 54:17 - Why Vincent took 9 months off and how that's helped him in his sport. 59:05 - The expectations that come with being a professional athlete. ILS here once again, and you know what's buzzing with more awkwardness and entertainment than the 2007 animate film "Bee Movie" starring Jerry Seinfeld? Vero's attempting to make connections on Bumble! What a way to start the show if I do say so myself. But, with those lighthearted moments, also arrives more somber ones. We discuss the recent tragedies that have affected the Asian community throughout the country, and a more deeper conversation that brings into question how other minorities view the validity of the Asian community status as a minority themselves. The seriousness doesn't stop there, as we also talk about the mass immigration of children from Central America and how the U.S. is responding this time. Lastly, the triple threat of Unpopular Opinions, What The Hell Twitter, and Good Looking Out comes out swinging hard! Stay tune for this and more. Don't forget to subscribe and share! On this episode of the podcast Joe was joined by Olivia Clifford via zoom call. Liv is black belt in Karate, having spent over a decade practicing and developing her craft which lead to her travelling around the world competing and representing Australia. We also discussed her background growing up, coming from a small country town and her upbringing. Another topic of discussion was her experiences travelling whilst competing and how she balances studying full time at university for a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, whilst working multiple jobs and still training consistently. Liv gave Joe insight into how she managed to stay disciplined throughout the lockdown and then developed into an in depth discussion about her fighting style and game plan coming into her tournaments.
This week, Gary and Hannah take a virtual trip to Japan - Land of the Rising Sun and, pre-pandemic, an increasingly popular destination for travellers from across South East Asia. Having started the year expecting the biggest ever Sakura festival in history followed by the Tokyo Olympics, 2020 has been particularly unkind to Japan. A so-called "Plague Ship" in Yokohama harbour catalysed a year of uncertainty that saw the Olympics shelved for 12 months, and hopes dashed of welcoming 10 million Chinese arrivals and 40 million visitors overall. The economy is deep in recession and COVID-19 isn't yet under control. Ever a pragmatic nation, though, Japan has plenty of plans for its tourism future. These range from the rescheduled Olympics in 2021 to space trips for super-rich tourists, casino resorts and new theme park dedicated to the hero of Hogwarts.
