Kathryn is also the author of three books: "Drops of Awesome," "Buckets of Awesome," and "532 Ways to Be Awesome." The focus of today's episode is on the significance of laughter and play in family dynamics. Episode Highlights: 02:00: Kathryn shares the origin of the awesome concept during a challenging period of postpartum depression. She explains how the concept emerged as a way to shift her perspective and find humor in difficult situations. 03:16: Kathryn discusses the visualization of "drops of awesome" and how it became a tool for building momentum in her daily life. The metaphorical bucket of awesome is introduced as a way to celebrate small victories. 04:52: Kathryn shares her experience with overcoming the negative voice in her head and how the concept of drops of awesome helped her focus on the positive aspects of her life. The discussion touches on the motivation that comes from celebrating small victories. 05:16: Positive reader feedback is highlighted, with Kathryn sharing a specific story of a reader who found inspiration and permission to recognize their own drops of awesome. The transformative effect of the concept on people's lives is discussed. 07:03: Christopher discusses challenges in Kathryn's life, such as postpartum depression, her husband's layoff, and health issues. He prompts Kathryn to share stories illustrating how humor and laughter helped during these difficult times. 08:01: Reflecting on the job loss, Kathryn stresses the importance of finding ways to connect and solidify family relationships through humor. She shares the positive outcome of the job search, emphasizing that their attitude and approach shifted the entire tone of the experience. 11:43: Christopher addresses how humor can be used to emotionally strengthen during serious health issues, referring to Kathryn's experience with her daughter's thyroid cancer diagnosis. 13:20: Kathryn details their humorous approach to her daughter's surgery, including a knitted stocking for the thyroid and a playful sword to "fight" cancer. The family continued finding humor in the post-surgery period, creating jokes around the scar and even displaying a stuffed thyroid in a jar. 14:38: Kathryn emphasizes that their humor was never at the expense of her daughter, Claire, and it always followed Claire's lead and sense of humor. The family's approach helped them find joy during challenging times. 15:36: Kathryn advises not to take oneself too seriously during challenging times. She suggests stopping and asking, "What is funny about this situation?" as a way to shift perspective and find humor even in the darkest moments. E37: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | Pre-Exam Motivation In today's episode, we'll be talking about Positive Self-talk before taking the test. Have you ever listened to the voice inside your head that whispered “What if I fail or I can't do this” That's right, we are diving into your thought life with some powerful words and motivation. I want to share with you something. I used to be really critical, I mean really critical of myself. But I have changed. I have changed. “how I talk to myself every morning” but ya know, to be honest, I had to unlearn negative self-talk, and re-learn how to be my own coach, teacher, and friend. Maybe you're like this too? You can listen to this motivation before you study, before you take the test, or just on the daily to improve your thought life. Let's get started: Positive Self Talk. To all the students out there listening, I want you to take a moment to visualize your own success. See yourself graduating from college, see yourself passing the big test, picture yourself smiling. I want you to see it clearly in your mind's eye - the goal that you have set for yourself to achieve. Feel excited about your goal, it's YOURS. This is your GOAL, this is YOUR dream, THIS. IS. YOURS. Be all in. Make a commitment to BE. ALL. IN. Show all the way up, Everyday. In my life, I have three rules. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Here's the thing, the thing about goals and dreams and life: There will be challenges! There will be hard times to overcome. There will be tests! And when those days come, and when those challenges present themselves - lean in, pick up the pace, and commit with GRIT to the grind. Because success doesn't just fall into our laps. It's earned through grit, and grind, it's earned through time and work. If you want to be good at something you got to put in the time, If you want to be GREAT at something you've got to put in the time. I know it's not always easy. There will be challenges along the way – late nights studying, moments of self-doubt, setbacks beyond your control. The hard times didn't come to stay. The hard times came to pass. Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal, Don't give up on yourself. It's not the challenge that breaks you - it's the challenge that makes you! Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal, Don't give up on yourself. Is the challenge you are facing today your thought life? Do you tell yourself you're not good enough, you're not gonna make it? You've got to say NO to negative self-talk, and YES to a new way of thinking. You've got to unlearn those OLD WAYS of thinking, and relearn a positive mindset. RIght now, right now, say out loud: I've got a dream. I've got a goal. I can do this! I know you are listening. I know you've put in the long hours and hard work. You've put in the time. The effort. The commitment. I want you to have an athlete's mindset toward an academic goal. Hit the homerun, score the touchdown, pass the test. You are ready. You are ready. Now go out there, achieve your dream. Conquer your goal. And show all the way up FOR. YOURSELF. You are worth it. I could not be happier that I get to talk to my dear friend Mohawk Matt this Saturday! Please join us. This is Matt (best said in his words)...I'm Matt! I get shit done. I see the world like a battleship game and make my moves while others are still planning. I bring teams together and remove barriers so they can focus on what they do best.I see calm during the chaos and enjoy problem-solving at 200 mph, like in my recent partnership with NASCAR driver Colin Garrett. Picture my glorious Mohawk and "Be Awesome" logo flying down the racetrack at Darlington Speedway to help bring resources to Veterans and their families nationwide.Check my resume to see what I have done over the years. Simply put, I can help you solve your problems because I have 20 years of experience solving problems across many domains both in the private sector and the federal government, with an emphasis on knowledge of innovation and acquisitions in the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Department of Defense agencies.I feel like Big Bird walking through a hallway of stormtroopers most of the time. I do things differently. It's how I was made. I can help you, and your organizations stand out in a sea of stormtroopers. As a strategist and mentor, I understand how people/cultures think, communicate and operate. My work has allowed me to engage with many different cultures and nuances of communication worldwide, including those found within military organizations like our armed forces and the federal government. With this knowledge, it's easy for me to build strong relationships both locally and internationally. These relationships can help you have conversations you wouldn't have had otherwise, in traditional methods or innovative practices alike. This skill set also helps me navigate inter-departmentally, removing silos in large and small organizations.I could start using buzzwords and say that I did this or that, but again, you can get that from my resume or simply by calling me up and chatting at 801-472-8021. Yes, that's my actual number, call me.Find Matt here - https://mohawkmattdenny.com/
