Grace welcomes the legendary DJ, producer and founder of Soul II Soul, Jazzie B, to the podcast. Over a bowl of ‘yellow' – one of his childhood comfort foods –Jazzie takes Grace on a journey from playing his sound system, aged 12, at a silver jubilee street party for the Queen, to finding inspiration on tour in Japan and Korea, and on to Buckingham Palace, where he received an OBE in 2008. The jobcentre suggested he should become a milkman, but instead Jazzie chose to channel his energy into his north London community through music. This decision transformed Soul II Soul into a global success and established Jazzie as an internationally renowned musician who has collaborated with some of the world's most talented artists

For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4 Dicky Trisco is a DJ and music producer who lives and breathes what he does. His passion for music and desire for good times is well known. He has spent years chasing that sound and that feeling around the globe as an international DJ. For him DJing is all about people. He is addicted to the way music connects people and makes for better days. Dicky really broke through as a DJ and producer in the Nu Disco/Disco Revival years from around 2004. In particular, his run of DJ edit, original and remix releases alongside Balearic House hero Pete Herbert on Disco Deviance and Maxi Discs led to him becoming an increasingly in demand DJ with a busy international touring schedule. He is also rumoured to be the force behind the rather legendary Secret Squirrel vinyl only imprint. But who knows??? It's a secret. Since those early days, Dicky has toured constantly around Asia, Australia, Central/South America, USA, Europe and the UK sharing the music and the sound he loves. He has also become a regular at a long list of high profile festivals including the legendary Glastonbury, Electric Elephant, Mareh, Love International, Festival No 6 and many more. Dicky is also a mainstay of the local scene in his hometown of Dundee, Scotland where he was a resident of the infamous ‘Small Town Club' aka Reading Rooms for over a decade. At nights like Autodisco, Disco Deviance, A Night With and Non Stop, he learned his trade playing alongside many of his heroes and legendary DJs from around the world such as Andrew Weatherall, Optimo, Rahaan, Jazzie B, Horse Meat Disco, Farley Jackmaster and many more. Dicky also ran and curated the well-respected House music label Home Taping Is Killing Music for many years putting out a run of amazing releases. Home Taping broke a number of great House artists who have gone on to become household names in the scene including The Blessed Madonna, The Revenge, Nicholas, Borrowed Identity, Eddie C & Medlar amongst others. Dicky continues to discover, produce and remix music for a number of quality imprints including Razor-N-Tape, File Under Disco, Home Taping, Barefoot Beats, Nervous Records and many more. He has also remixed major artists such as Bryan Ferry, Belle & Sebastian, L'Impératrice, Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice), Danielle Baldelli, Faze Action, The Orielles, Golden Dawn Arkestra and Tensnake down in his basement studio. Most recently Dicky has been creating original music alongside NYC music machine JKriv under the name Sentimental Animals for the Razor-N-Tape imprint. Their Love Vibration EP was very well received by disc jockeys around the world and has been played by the likes of Craig Charles who made it one of his Tracks of 2021 on his BBC Radio 6 Funk & Soul show. Dicky became a resident DJ at Pikes in Ibiza in the summer of 2023 playing in every area - poolside, terrace, Freddies, bathtub - in this legendary club. He also kick started a monthly radio show out of Ibiza called International Sounds on OpenLab Radio where he showcases the music he discovers, makes and plays while travelling around the globe. As a disc jockey, DT packs a little bit of everything into his sets of International Sounds and is committed to the idea that music and club nights should be all about escapism, joy and togetherness. As Dicky says love and dancing is what we need. Amen to that. This week we're bending the rules of our New York style season slightly, by interviewing fellow Brit, Jason Jules. Regardless, his new book Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style is extremely pertinent to this season's theme, given its concern with mid-century American style. Aleks and Jason explore Black Ivy in this episode, of course, but we also hear about Jason's fascination for cultural trend-spotting, his passion for jazz music and his admiration for progressive rap culture. It's a fascinating conversation, this. We hope you enjoy it.---HandCut Radio is produced by Birch, the London based creative office of James Allen. Welcome to the 4th episode of Where Love Lives! We're 4 episodes in already and I'm really enjoying this first season, I hope you are too! So far, we have had musical guests, Jazzie B, Colleen ‘Cosmo' Murphy and most recently Smokin' Jo, but I really want to make the guests on the podcast as varied as possible, so for this episode I'm delighted to have as my guest author and journalist Sophie Heawood, who popped into the podcast studios at Soho Radio for a chinwag about the things she loves, outside of the traditional romantic narrative. I wanted to have Sophie on as my guest as I was really interested in her book, The Hungover Games, which is a memoir about how she was jolted into adulthood as a single mother by accidentally falling pregnant in LA after a one night stand, and how she has coped with being situated outside of family norms by "having some of the pages missing." There is so much negative representation of single motherhood, so I wanted to celebrate Sophie and her book, and also make those women listening to this show – and all people – who also feel like they sit outside the dominant narrative to feel heard and seen. Where Love Lives is basically a middle finger to societal expectations of femininity and normative notions of how we can find happiness and joy in our lives. So join me and Sophie, middle fingers firmly up, to chat about her loves which include the constantly sunny LA and the strong bonds she has with her teddy bears… If you like this podcast please do review, subscribe, like and share the love with your friends! Follow me and do say hello!

This isn't a podcast dedicated to romantic love, but instead explores life's pleasures and meaningful connections through conversation with a wide range of creatives, from DJs, singers and musicians through to writers, artists, directors and designers. Some you have heard of, and some that you haven't. This first episode is with Jazzie B of Soul II Soul fame... a massive personality, and a great laugh too... He's celebrating the launch of his new book A Happy Face, A Thumpin' Bass, For A Loving' Race which is out this September. For those who don't know (shame on you!) Jazzie was born Beresford Romeo, 26 January 1963, London, England. The larger-than-life svengali Jazzie B. began his musical apprenticeship on the London sound system circuit before fronting the enormous international success of Soul II Soul. As such, Jazzie B. is widely credited with having pioneered a renaissance in British soul and dance music in the late 80s. Jazzie B. continues to occupy himself by running his studio complex in Camden, north London and still maintains a close relationship with his pet tortoise... The ladies took a trip down 95 South to the 804 to chat with their good sis Jazzie B of the Melanin Uncorked Podcast & Book Club. This episode is giving true groupchat vibes as the crew shaded Ms. Wendy Williams for her misconduct on her show and praised the national spelling bee champ, Zaila Avant-garde. Like the Jerry Harrison song goes, "Things Fall Apart" but we are here to build them back up via this journey through melody and lyrics. We face the new "Reality" - with Sly & Robbie and Shabba Ranks - of this "Strange World", which is also the title of scorching new tune by Rheinzand. Franc Moody has some solid advice on a cut from their new album, it's called "Grin and Bear It". James Brown wails "we've gotta come together" on his rare collaboration with Soul II Soul's Jazzie B, titled "How Long". Beyond our DJ set of inspirational anthems, we celebrate bassist Carol Kaye's 85th birthday by spinning some of her rare instrumental funk sides. Rest in Power Manu Dibango, we celebrate your legacy and dig deep into your catalog presenting tunes like your 1979 opus, "Tropical Garden".Catch FSQ with Chuck Da Fonk every Wednesday from 12 Noon - 2 PM EST / 5 - 7 PM GMT.For a complete track listing, visit: https://thefaceradio.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fsqofficial/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fsqofficial/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/fsqofficialTwitter: https://twitter.com/fsqofficial Support The Face Radio with Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sharleen Spiteri was just 21 when she found herself and her band Texas at number 8 in the charts with I Don't Want A Lover. Almost 30 years later, she's still writing and recording - back with Texas since 2013 after a spell as a solo artist. Her new album Jump on Board is out now. Texas will play the Isle Of Wight Festival on Saturday 10th June and the UK tour kicks off on 11th September in Cardiff. So many 50th anniversaries this year, and not least among them the Summer of Love, when nearly 100,000 long haired layabouts (quote) travelled to San Francisco to change the world. Reviews are mixed, concerning their success, among them Nick Campion's. He's an academic specialising in the cultural history of astronomy and astrology (indeed he used to do the horoscopes in a daily paper) - and his book The New Age in the Modern West looks back to that fabled time. Well, she might not have made it quite to San Francisco, but Esta Charkham did it make it to Holborn and joined the cast of Zigger Zagger, the National Youth Theatre's landmark play about football hooliganism. It lit up theatre land in the summer of 1967. Now Esta wants to reunite the original cast. So far she has traced 43 of the original 87 members. If you are one or know someone who was a cast member email us at saturdaylive@bbc.co.uk with Zigger Zagger in the subject line You might think that the Reverend Kate Bottley spends her life watching TV for Channel 4's Gogglebox but she's too busy for that. She talks about growing up in Sheffield, the priesthood and being a bit of a geek. Jason Blyth has a fantastic connection to Eurovision. He's a music teacher from Perth who loves Eurovision so much that he wrote a song for it. He's in our Dundee studio This week the Inheritance Tracks comes from Jazzie B. DJ and producer and one of the founding members of the Grammy-winning musical collective Soul II Soul. In the summer of 1989 their hits 'Keep on Movin' and 'Back to Life' seemed to be blasting out from every passing car. The band's mix of reggae, soul, dub and hip hop emerged from the world of sound systems and their maxim "A happy face, a thumpin' bass, for a lovin' race" got us all into the groove... Soul to Soul are on Tour now Next Tuesday as part of the Summer of Love Revisited at the Albert Hall, Jazzie B will be in discussion about the black music counterculture of the 1960s and 70s. It's Eurovision tonight so we want to hear from you. Some people love it, others less so. What are your memories of watching Eurovision? Have you ever been? Do you have an interesting connection? Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B tells Matthew Parris why he nominates James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul”, for this series. Jazzie B, who was awarded a CBE for services to black British music, spent time latterly with James Brown and he became “like a big brother.” He shares personal reflections on Mr Brown’s life and legacy, with help from the music journalist Charles Shaar Murray. Producer: Maggie Ayre First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2014.
Soul II Soul, the B-side. Having discussed the making of "Club Classics Vol 1", the breakthrough album from Soul II Soul (in the A-side of the programme, broadcast on Monday 25th November and available online), Jazzie B and Caron Wheeler respond to questions from the audience. Jazzie talks more about his own roots as a musician and Soul II Soul perform live versions of tracks from the album.
John Wilson talks to Jazzie B and Caron Wheeler of Soul II Soul about their 1989 album 'Club Classics Vol 1' including the global hit Back to Life. Including exclusive performance by the whole band. Soul II Soul is one of the most successful British black groups of all time. Their ethos of 'a happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race' and the sound of their debut album, released in 1989, defined a time and place in the UK's musical history. Featuring the huge hits 'Back To Life' and 'Keep On Moving' the album took London's multicultural underground club culture into the mainstream and achieved worldwide success. 'Club Classics' mixed the sounds of a burgeoning DJ scene with Jazzie B's distinctly British take on rap and the colossal vocal talents of Caron Wheeler. Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (and others) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website, where the programmes can also be downloaded and other musical goodies accessed. Mastertapes is new programme in which John Wilson talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Each edition includes two episodes, with John initially quizzing the artist about the album in question, and then, in the B-side, the audience puts the questions. Both editions feature exclusive live performances. The B-side of this programme, where it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions, can be heard tomorrow at 3.30pm.
Jazzie B grew up in North London and fell in love with Jamaican Sound Systems. He went on to have the biggest Sound System in the world and he created a new sound that united Jamaican reggae with American soul. His bass fused driven music captured the attention of the world and was to change the sound of US RnB. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
