In this episode of the Celestial Citizen podcast, host Britt Duffy Adkins introduces a special project that the Celestial Citizen team has been working on to draw attention to gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the space industry.  The project, titled "Take Up Space," includes a short film and a four-part companion podcast series that features the firsthand accounts of anonymous women and non-binary individuals working in the space industry. In this first episode, titled "Not Technical Enough" we share stories that focus on the many ways in which women are discouraged from working in STEM and technical fields in both subtle and overt ways. The current climate for women in STEM and women in space is described as "very cloudy" by one of the participants.  And although progress has been made, there is still a long way to go to make the space industry more inclusive.  Women are often made to feel uncomfortable if they have opinions or ideas, and the industry is still by and large dominated by men.  Globally, women make up only 11% of astronauts, 20-22% of space industry workers, and 30% of researchers, scientists, and engineers.Despite the challenges, there are efforts to address these issues and bring about change.  But perhaps change is not coming fast enough, and there is a risk of losing talented individuals who want to work in the industry if things don't improve.  One speaker points out that recent triumphs, such as Wally Funk's trip to space, are few and far between.  Many women have had to abandon their dreams due to lack of opportunities, discrimination, mistreatment, and other societal pressures. The speakers share their personal experiences with doubt, questioning their place in the industry, and feeling invisible or not taken seriously.  One woman, in particular, recounts her experience with harassment in her first job in the field, which was extremely demoralizing and made her question whether it was worth staying in the industry.Despite the challenges, the speakers remain determined to pursue their passions and make a difference.  The podcast provides a powerful look at the experiences of gender minorities in the space industry and highlights the need for greater inclusivity and diversity in the field. Our short film, "Take Up Space," can be found on the Celestial Citizen YouTube channel.Support the showSubscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media!Instagram: @thecelestialcitizenTwitter: @celestialcitznLinkedIn: Celestial CitizenYouTube: @thecelestialcitizen

This week on The Cosmic Companion, we are Celebrating Diversity in Space Exploration, looking at the history of inclusion in human explorations beyond our world — past, present, and future. Later in the show, we'll be talking with Meredith Bagby, author of The New Guys, a look at NASA's groundbreaking astronaut class of 1978.The history of space exploration has been marked by numerous milestones, not only in terms of scientific and technological achievements but also in the inclusion and diversity of those who explore beyond our home world. Over the decades, space exploration has slowly evolved to include women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, paving the way for greater representation in the future.NASA's original class of astronauts from 1959, the Mercury Seven, were all Caucasian male jet pilots — not exactly representative of a melting pot of society. However, less well-known were the Mercury 13, a group of 13 women who underwent astronaut training in the early 1960s. Despite performing as well, if not better, than men at many rigorous physiological tests, NASA did not recognize these women as official astronaut trainees. Opposed by many politicians and media alike, no member of the Mercury 13 flew to space for 60 years until Wally Funk in 2021... After the Mercury 7 were selected, an unofficial project sought to test 13 women pilots to see if they pass  the same tests. The Mercury 13 - or FLATs (Fist Lady Astronauts Trainees) - all passed the Phase I tests but the project was cancelled before most of them could go any further. Because they had no test pilot experence (a career field only open to men in the 1950s and 1960s), none of them were astually considered to become astronauts despite impressive resumes and good test results. As NASA prepared to move from Project Mercury to Project Gemini, the Soviet Space Program look for ways to stay ahead in the space race (at least in terms of propaganda). They took a huge gamble, but successfully flew the frist multi-crew mission (in stylish track suits and not pressurized space suits) and they also managed the first space walk, though the most dangerous part of that mission may have been after they landed back on Earth. The Space Race series introduction is Lift Off by kennysvoice. As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: ·       The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com    ·       Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast·       Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts·       Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/

Today Kevin and I meet with Loretta Hall, a freelance writer and nonfiction book author. She has been interested in space travel since her teenage years, when she followed closely the early NASA programs: selection of the Mercury Seven astronauts, the suborbital and orbital missions of Mercury and Gemini, and the Apollo steps toward a moon landing. About fifteen years ago, her latent fascination with space exploration resurfaced, and she has since concentrated on that subject. She has written nine nonfiction books, including five on the history and future of space travel. Loretta loves finding ways to participate in space activities without being an astronaut. That led her to write one of her books, The Complete Space Buff's Bucket List: 100 Space Things to Do Before You Die. Her newest book, Higher, Faster, Longer: My Life in Aviation and My Quest for Spaceflight, was a cooperative effort to produce the memoir of Wally Funk, an icon in the fields of aviation and spaceflight. Three months ago, aviator Wally Funk made headlines when she became the oldest person to fly into space. At 82 years old, she broke the record long held by John Glenn, who was 77 when he made his last suborbital flight in 1998. After landing, Funk astounded the world with her stunning smile and boundless energy, causing White House spokesperson Jen Psaki to remark: “She is America's new sweetheart.” Wally Funk was born in 1939 as Mary Wallace Funk, and had her first contact with an aircraft when she was just a year old. By the time she reached high school, Funk was already on her way to becoming one of the first female pilots in the U.S., in an era when women were expected to stay home and care for their families. But gender discrimination never stopped Funk. She became a professional aviator at the age of 20 and a year later volunteered for NASA's “Women in Space” program. Though she went through rigorous training along with 12 other highly qualified female aviators, the program was canceled. It wasn't until the late 1970s that NASA began accepting and training women to be astronauts. As soon as that door opened, Funk applied three times but was turned down because she didn't have an engineering degree. She took it all in stride, and kept her longing to fly into space. In 2020, the memoir of her career, called Higher, Faster, Longer — My Life in Aviation and My Quest for Spaceflight, was published. It caught the attention of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who invited her to join him as one of a four-member crew aboard his spacecraft, New Shepard, on a suborbital flight on July 20 this year. After the flight, Wally told reporters, “I've been waiting a long time. I want to go again — fast.” Hope you're listening, Mr. Bezos. This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man, went to space and back Tuesday morning on an 11-minute, supersonic joy ride aboard the rocket and capsule system developed by his space company, Blue Origin. Riding alongside the multibillionaire were Bezos' brother, Mark Bezos; Wally Funk, an 82-year-old pilot and one of the "Mercury 13" women who trained to go to space in the 20th century but never got to fly; and an 18-year old recent high school graduate named Oliver Daemen who was Blue Origin's first paying customer and whose father, an investor, purchased his ticket. Funk and Daemen became the oldest and youngest people, respectively, ever to travel to space. And this flight marked the first-ever crewed mission for Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital space tourism rocket, which the company plans to use to take wealthy thrill seekers on high-flying joy rides in the months and years to come.To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

As the candidate field narrows further in the Conservatives quest for the next leader, we discuss how those left are trying to win over different female electorates - MPs, the party membership and the women who will have to vote for the new PM in any general election. And, how do they compare to the Lib Dems where the favourite to become their next leader is a woman? Jenni spoke to Anne McElvoy, a senior editor at the Economist and Miranda Green, a journalist and former adviser to the Lib Dems.In 1961 an American pilot, Wally Funk wanted to be an astronaut and passed the Woman in Space programme as part of a group known as the Mercury 13. The programme was abruptly cancelled and instead Wally became America's first woman aviation safety inspector and taught 3,000 pilots to fly. Now nearly 80, Wally still wants to go into space and is on the waiting list to go as a tourist.More than 2,000 people have died after being infected with HIV and hepatitis C through blood treatments. The victims were infected over 25 years ago, in what has been called the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS. But even now new cases are still being diagnosed. Michelle Tolley found out that she had been infected with Hepatitis C while she was giving birth in 1987. She tells Jenni what happened and why she is taking part in the Infected Blood Inquiry.Earlier this week we heard of the death in Manhattan of Gloria Vanderbildt. She was 95. She was a famously beautiful, fabulously wealthy socialite, but she was also a fashion designer and known as the Queen of Jeans. Jenni spoke to the fashion historian, Amber Butchart about what led Vanderbildt into the promotion of jeans.

The first footsteps on the Moon were one giant step for 'man', but from the early days of aeronautics women have also been involved in space travel. In Women with the Right Stuff, presenter, pilot and aspiring astronaut Wally Funk pays tribute to the pioneers, meets some of those involved within today's space industry, and hears from the woman who might be among the crew for the first human mission to Mars. Wally has first hand experience of the early days of space travel in America. She undertook secret tests to become an astronaut in 1961 and, along with 12 other female pilots, passed the extremely tough physical tests to become an unofficial member of the ‘Mercury 13' – the women who, given a chance, could have gone into space before Russia's Valentina Tereshkova made history. Wally hears from astronauts Jessica Meier, Helen Sharman, Eileen Collins and Samantha Cristoforetti; mission control flight director Mary Lawrence; space historian David J Shayler; and shares her 1961 astronaut medical tests with NASA flight surgeon Shannan Moynihan. Over 50 years after those tests, Wally is still flying (she takes her producer above Dallas in a Cessna) but she is yet to get into space. However Wally is on the waiting list for one of the first commercial space tourism flights and is prepared to make history as yet another woman with the right stuff.Image: A Wally Funk playing card, Wally was one of the original Mercury 13, Credit: BBC
