Just trying to run with as many interesting people as possible...Hi, I'm Joel Benton and I'm on a three miles a day running streak. You're welcome to come along with me.I started this streak on Jan 1st 2011 and I've run at least three miles every day since. Rain or shine, I'm out running - so I thou…
Joining me on today’s trail running interview is ULTRA runner Simon Prytherch who runs 100 miles per week.He went from a total non-runner before deciding now is the time to pick up Ultra-Marathons.Simon Prytherch is truly full of knowledge. Since he has undergone the process from moderately active but smoking and drinking to specialising in races of 100 miles or more, you are one lucky gal or guy as Simon is coaching athletes of all abilities. So, no matter if you are progressing towards your first half marathon, working out how to transition to ultra-marathons or want podium in a 145-mile race, Simon – you will notice listening to today’s run-conversation – is your guy to train with!I’ve known Simon since a little while but only recently picked up on his running career and – of course – asked him for a run.#FunFact: I took a tumble but didn’t lose the camera on today’s run at only 00:06:56 minutes in. Simon took it easy on me and assured me that is usually the sort of thing he’d tend to do. I hope you can be as kind as he is and forgive my wobble!Let’s Go!–Runners Quote:A little different than the usual, though I think there is so much to learn and take away, it’s more interesting than a simple quote:7:57 Why Simon wears compression shorts8:27 What gear Simon pays attention to9:42 What food he is eating during his Ultra’s10:13 he starts talking about his hydration & eating regiment whilst running10:41 What Simon is carrying in his hydration bottles11:48 Talking about the calorie deficit the body goes into when ultra running12:31 We get into conversation about Dean Karnazes who Simon ran with during the Spartathlon in September 2018.There is obviously way more to come including his infamous experience to DNF (did not finish) at 100 miles during a 130 mile race.–LINKSFind out more about Simon on this website–AWARDSSt Illtyds Ultra 50km (GBR), May 2019 – 1st OverallEndure 24 hour run (GBR), July 2019 – 3rd Overall–FOLLOW Simon's Journey on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram.–I’d love to see you more often around► Subscribe to My Podcast or find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or YouTube–3 Mile Run Down is a way for me to talk with equally enthusiastic people from all sorts of backgrounds. Ultra Runner Joshua Deuermeyer shares his dream of buying his own running shop in Las Vegas called the Red Rock Running Company. So how did he and his three friends end up running a Sports company in Las Vegas?Well, it all started with an email response to his friend saying: “Dude, I just had a dream the other night about buying a shoe store!”. That was Dewey responding to his friend Mark after he forwarded him an email that the Red Rock Running Company is for sale. With two of the friends in they started the process and reached out to the owner. They do put it down as a worthwhile experience though it became clear after a little while of pushing, they needed a third partner.Since the trio ran together many times, Joshua was the number three and the triad ownership of the Red Rock Running Company was born.As already stated in one of my earlier running videos with James Ellis (S1:E8), I am a big supporter of small independent running stores. Dewey himself is an ULTRA runner and though there are some awesome trails around Las Vegas, we were unlucky enough for this run to have rain. Well, heaven knows the soil needs it here, it is a desert after all!Today’s rain allows us to both go incognito, as two raindrops decided to remain almost exactly over our faces on the video, so be glad to listen to the rain - especially if you run in sunshine. The conversation with Dewey is on point for everyone who either is retired an is looking to open a business or just simply wants to be part of the business force on the running end. Dewey is retired from the military in the US and having picked up his hobby in ULTRA running to make it into a business with friends was a smart move in my eyes.Come and run with us for more info on how this is all going. It’s quite informative.Lets’ Go!–This is day 2,966 of my personal Running Streak.–Runners Quote"Head to 00:12:05 and start listening from there for information on Gait Analysis.Dewey’s explanation of Gait is less than one minute and the reason for me pointing it out is that information is always key, no matter what you do.–LINKSFind out more about Joshua’s Shop on his website–FOLLOW his Red Rock Running company on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram or follow him personally on LinkedIn or Instagram.–I’d love to see you more often around► Subscribe to My Podcast or to 3 Mile Run Down on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or YouTube–3 Mile Run Down is a way for me to talk with equally enthusiastic people from all sorts of backgrounds. Today, I am having the pleasure to talk to and run with trail Running Coach Kimberly Mathis-Reed, or Kim, who takes us through the desert of Nevada. Her life journey is an extraordinary story of a life well lived and how tragedy turned to a holistic running and life coaching business. She is a native to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, close to Henderson in the State of Nevada, USA. Her grandfather moved there to help build the Dam and the family never left. It is a stunning environment to run in I have to say. As I was there on a business trip, I thought I’d ask her for a run interview and she kindly agreed. She has one incredible story. If you are from there you are lucky to have possible access to her and her holistic coaching methods. After the death of her first-born son she had two options in her mind... The first option was to hide from life and turn to alcohol (as I mention during the run, I think that would have been me in all probability, which I mention at 00:08:48) and other avoidance tactics to escape the grief that was swallowing her whole. And who would have really thought ill of her doing so, after all, there is no word in any language I know of, for a parent who is losing their child. The second option was to figure out how to live a joyous life while honoring herself, her child and her family. Lucky for me as well as all her clients, she chose the second option. To be fair, the selection process was not as straight forward and pragmatic as it is given here as you can imagine. Through a very difficult journey of self-coaching she also found trail running. Running and outdoor fitness had become the foundation of her coaching ideology. It is her passion to help others create their best days after she found hers. This might involve a basic running plan to improve their 5k time or weekly sessions involving in-depth discussions and activities to break through mental barriers. With nearly two decades of coaching and teaching experience under her belt, just listening to her, you will find her more than qualified to help others. In many ways, you are joining me on a run with a superhuman being. Let’s Go! (If you dare - take some tissues with you on the run, you can thank me later)–This is day 2,972 of my personal Running Streak.–Runners Quote00:15:50 – 00:15:57“Even just going from track and road to trail, everything just changes about the way you run.” – Kim on how she moved from track and road running coach to trail running.–LINKSFind out more about Kim on her website or follow her Journey on Facebook or on Instagram–I’d love to see you more often around► Subscribe to My Podcast or follow 3 Mile Run Down on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube–3 Mile Run Down is a way for me to talk with equally enthusiastic people from all sorts of backgrounds. Phil Hewitt is a fascinating guy. A career journalist, marathon runner and cricket fan, he was in South Africa to watch an international when a few wrong turns and careless decisions left him bleeding to death after a mugging by the side of a busy highway. I run three miles or so on a beautiful, crisp, sunny morning in Hampshire and we talk about the restorative power of exercise.Phil has written a fascinating book Outrunning the Demons where he describes his path back from the PTSD he suffered as a result of his experience. He also collates a book full of other inspiring stories that are well worth a read.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Outrunning-Demons-Transformed-through-Running/dp/1472956516Let me know what you think in the comments.
It was a real pleasure to run part of Vassos' commute home from his job as co-presenter of the Virgin Radio breakfast show. We met at the News International studios near Borough Market in London and ran along the Thames. The weather was lovely and the pace was quick. We dodged tourists near the London Eye and had a thoroughly enjoyable chat. There's an interesting back story about this run which you'll have to ask Vassos to tell you.Vassos' enthusiasm for running is infectious. Just listening to him talk about his training and experiences on the breakfast show, both on BBC Radio 2 and more recently on Virgin Radio, its impossible not to get excited about getting your trainers on and getting out for some sweaty miles. Our run together was fascinating. Vassos is a hardcore runner. His distances eclipse mine by many, many miles. He deserves much respect for his training and attitude to competition. Hearing about his experience running round the Isle of Wight, the Dragon's Back and the epic Spartathlon got me all fired up about Ultras once more. Please let me know what you think in the comments.
Tom Marshall has over fifty Welsh international vests in his collection - as well as world championship wins in the cross country discipline and two sub four minute miles in competition. He's one tough individual and in an entirely different league to me. Almost a different species! Tom and I chat about his work with fascinating startup sportsinjusryfix.com as well as what it takes to compete at sports highest levels. Wales is an amazing country and the people are always warm and welcoming. Cardiff is a beautiful city and perfect for running. Tom is an amazing ambassador and it was a great privilege for me to be able to run with him.
Efrem Brynin was on Season 2 of SAS, Who Dares Wins where he was beasted by the directing staff and we discovered his heartbreaking story.https://youtu.be/cWT-9T_ZqskEfrem is mentally and physically tough because he's had to be. He turned unthinkable grief into a drive to run the https://www.strongmen.org.uk charity to help men suffering with mental health issues following trauma, PTSD and bereavement. We live near one another as it happens and did a lovely three miles in National Trust property Petworth Park. Please check out the work the charity does and donate if you can. Men struggle to be strong and tend to hide their feelings. Talk and physical exercise can help massively.I've run again with Efrem without the camera. It was really rewarding to make his acquaintance.
Greg Searle MBE is a national treasure. Its mindblowing to think of the training and dedication it takes to win and olympic gold. At the age of twenty I was in nightclubs until the early hours and in no state to focus like that. Now imagine fighting off twenty year olds at the age of forty to gain a place in a boat representing your country at the olympics. It beggars belief. I'm pleased to tell you that Greg is a genuinely lovely guy. One you get past his good looks and rock hard 6' 4" physique his charm really wins you over. He's a natural athlete but training and hard work created the olympian not just genetics. I hope I get to run with him again.Check out his book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/If-Not-Now-W...
Leanne Davies is quite an amazing person. As a new mum she wanted to find other women locally who were in a similar position to run with and talk to. Now Leanne and her colleagues organise 65,000 women all across the UK in support of one another. Incredible.Leanne's facebook group Run Mummy Run is one of the biggest of its kind and is testimony to her hard work, determination and persistence.
William Pullen is a fascinating guy. His story is an interesting one. I first became aware of William watching his Ted X talk about the work he does in his practice as a psychotherapist treating those with anxiety and depression issues using a mic of traditional talk therapy and doing what we all love - getting out and running with his clients. Check out William's Ted X talk here: https://youtu.be/Sq6393AreD4He and I did a lap of London's Hyde Park and the time flew by. The weather was fantastic and he made great company. I hope I get to run with him again.
Susy Chan is a formidable woman. Aside from competing in some of the world's toughest races like the Marathon Des Sables, she regularly speaks on TV and at seminars and is the most prolific social media influencer imaginable. Susie and I meet early one morning in Hampshire and run a few pleasant miles around the old army ranges. I couldn't help thinking that she was taking it easy on me. Susy was fascinating to talk to. If you aren't already, you should follow her on social media. Her feed is always full of inspirational running activities. @susie_chan_ No matter how hard the event or how fast she's running, she always seems to be loving every minute and she's never without a smile on her face. This was a memorable 3+ miles.
Mike Seaman is a truly charming, affable, charismatic guy. We met in a wet car park near his house. Mike was feeling under the weather but because he's a committed runner, naturally he came out anyway. Mike gave up the corporate event management world to go out on his own and start an exhibition focussed on the sport we all love. Its a big, balsy move and I very much admire him for it. Fortunately, because he's good at what he does, the National Running Show at the NEC in Birmingham was a big success in its first year and an even bigger one in the second year. Mike has just announced a London show in June 2020 and has BIG plans for global domination. He's an intelligent, energetic, ambitious, capable guy. Watch this space...The run was really enjoyable. I loved our chat and came away inspired as well as damp. Hope you enjoy it. Let me know in the comments. Thanks.
Today’s running partner is an Ultra-Marathon runner that goes by the name of Andy Nuttall who talks about his journey to creating the amazing Ultra Running Magazine.ULTRA Magazine is the UK's first print magazine dedicated to ultra running - generally speaking, any running race longer than the marathon distance of 26.2 miles.Andy Nuttall went from 42 years old moderate (like here and there) runner to developing a pallet for Ultra runs thanks to a friend. The decision came about one day when he saw a picture of himself pushing his daughter in a pram. It’s quite funny and you can listen to it at 00:01:55 minutes into the running interview. His magazine is outstanding, and I can only recommend it. Beyond the creator of ULTRA Magazine, Andy is a Senior Producer for a Games Company here in the UK and I always find that if you work anywhere in gaming you can make things fun for yourself.I thoroughly believe this is the case here. There is of course a lot more to Andy and when you are ready you can hear us discuss the Ultra Marathon Running magazine, his training plan and his upcoming races. Joining me today on my trail running interview is James Ellis, Founder of the Run Company Running shops, where we talk about the importance of Gait Analysis, to identify the way you walk and run. This allows you to fully understand how to run better and what running shoes you need to enhance your running and take it to the next level. The Run Company has shops in Chichester, Brighton and soon to come, Woking in the UK. You can visit and buy running gear at the shop or even order online at his shop website.James is very knowledgeable about running and passionate about the store as well as supporting runners all over the world. His professional running career ambitions went out of the window one day because of a lorry that ran him over whilst on a training run with his bike. Of course, that pinned him down for many months in hospital and recovery. Listen to his story from 00:08:23That being said, it opened him up to new opportunities and gave us access to a brilliant runner’s mind from many angles.Today I benefit (and so do you) from James’ knowledge of Gait Analysis (which is done professionally in his shops) as well as the running gear we wear and is sold at The Run Company. We also talk about his secondary business interest Unhinged Productions, which is bridging the gap in between the seller (that mostly is non-EU based) to the UK market in videography. We talk about running gear such as:GoreOn 365 (Swiss)Asics–This is day 2,951 on my personal running streak!–Runners Quote00:10:02 – 00:10:10“We motivate by passionately helping people and that sounds corny but it’s genuine. Today’s running partner is Jamie Alderton, who shares his personal growth tips for success. He is a world renowned Bodybuilder, Personal Trainer, Fitness Model, World Record Holder, Motivational Speaker, Author, Blogger, Instagram Legend, Retired Soldier and all-round influencer of Body, Mind and Business. Before you are getting the wrong idea, I’d like to confirm that this all refers to one person! Jamie or Jay, as he calls himself is a modern (almost) rags to riches story! As in all of these stories, it’s the main protagonist, who has to decide what they want for their future and instead of just dreaming, take some action.Jay truly did take action, holding onto his army mindset. After seven years of having someone tell him what to do, he utilised that voice - that continued in his head aimlessly - and gave it the outlet to eat healthy and right, to train rigorously. He didn’t stop there. He uses the same method to work on his Social Media accounts and on his business. He calls it – quite rightly – “continuous hard work”! start listening from: 00:04:00It doesn’t come as a surprise to see him successful I must say. Joining me today on my trail running interview is 73 Years Old Gary Rust who has been a Streak Runner For 35 Years. He has managed to continue streak running for 35 years, which ranks him at number 41 in the world of streak runners according to the Running Streak Association.Gary Rust, a previous PE school teacher, a running coach, winner and record breaker of many races in his age group and a ‘Grand Master’ of streak running. He runs a mile or more every day.Whilst his isn’t the longest running streak in the world, - the title of longest known and recorded running streak is held by two-time GB Olympian Ron Hill, who’s running streak ended after 52 years and 39 days, that's 19,032 days in total – he is full of wisdom when it comes to the inevitable obstacles life has in store for you when you are running daily. It’s good to talk to someone who simply knows the scope and I can turn to on my running streak. As a daily runner you must deal with your own inspiration, rather than fall into isolation.Gary has been running every day since the 3rd of July, 1983 and is full of wisdom when it comes to the consistency in running and overcoming the obstacles coming – inevitably, one might say – your way. I know running does cover a lot of ground when it comes to all the health and weight questions, but it is more than that.If you are looking for a reason to start your very own running streak, here it is:“Running can help you lose weight. Running can build muscle tone. Running can improve your complexion. Running can strengthen your heart and make it work more efficiently. Running can increase your aerobic capacity and lower your blood pressure. Running can relax you, help you quit smoking, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Running can reduce depression and lift your spirits. Running can help you think and make you more creative. Running can make you more athletic and energetic and full of vitality. Running can improve your self-image and make you more self-confident. In short, running can change your entire outlook on life and make a new person out of you.” - Marc Bloom, The Runner’s Bible 1986At 73 years old, you might forgive him to have no large online presence, so I talk for all of us when I speak to him about training and racing. If I look and feel as good as Gary does at his age, I’ll be happy. We talk about the book ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall at about 00:13:39 in this video. We talk about running shoes. Gary doesn’t mention his but mine are Hoka Speedgoat for Trail running. I bought mine at the Run Company in the UK.At about 23 minutes in, I introduced something called swimrun to our conversation after Gary said he'd never done anything else but running. It’s a month to go for my first but Gary’s advice is priceless! Jump forward to his advice at 00:23:51.Excuse the endless stream of cars, motorbikes and buses as we run one of the roadsides in Palm Springs, California.
