The Wapping Dispute was a major confrontation in the 1980s between print unions and Rupert Murdoch's News International as it sought to modernize operations, leading to the decline of union power in the UK. Sparked by technological advancements in the printing industry, the dispute highlighted broader shifts in labor relations and government policies under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Its resolution marked a significant turning point in industrial practices, paving the way for increased operational efficiency at the cost of union influence.

In this moving episode, Rob Goodwin speaks with therapist and author Zetta Thomelin. Zetta became interested in hypnotherapy after having some sessions for stress-related insomnia that worked for her. So, she wanted to understand further, how it works, why it works and became so fascinated by its potential to create change that she decided that this was what she wanted to do with her life and so left the business world behind. As she delved deeper into planning sessions for her clients, Zetta became increasingly intrigued by the power of the language that we use, how it impacts on our subconscious, particularly in trance but outside of trance too, otherwise advertising would not be so successful. As an English graduate she was well placed to begin to create her own language patterns and metaphors to help her clients and to reflect on the language she used in her own environment. This led to her developing books that reflect her approach to therapy utilising metaphor, creative imaginative language, and poetry.Zetta's new book, The Trauma Effect moves a little away from language patterns and looks further into the influences of our family experiences, into whom we become and how traumas affecting people long before we are born can impact on our own lives, though of course that does still involve language - the language we hear growing up. Zetta tells a story in this book, the family story that she believed to be hers, but turned out to be somewhat different.Zetta is involved in the governance of hypnotherapy and complementary medicine, as Chair of the British Association of Therapeutic Hypnotists, Vice Chair of the UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations and also served as a trustee for the Research Council for Complementary Medicine.Prior to her career in therapy, she was CEO of Children with AIDS Charity and Vice Chair of the charity Mama Biashara and also worked in the media as a Director of Chronos Group Publishing and as Group Head at News International, working mainly on The Times and The Sunday Times. She still sees a limited number of private patients online and in person and also offers supervision to accredited hypnotherapists.www.zettathomelin.comwww.whitefeatherspirit.com

In this episode, we delve into the relationship between design as a creative discipline and how systems and tools shape this creativity for better or worse. We also talk about why it helps designers to customize their processes and how this allows designers to focus on where they can have the most impact, which is often the strategic side of design, as well as the psychological aspects of the creative problem-solving process. In this episode, we look at:How can you challenge the design brief while avoiding "quick assumptions/solutions"?How do you choose the best methods to solve the problem (JTBD, Sprints, etc.)?How do you incorporate principles of visual perception and affordance into your design process? How do you create artificial friction in your designs? How can designers envision the future using today's tools? And plenty more!Thank you very much for your time and knowledge, Mustafa!******The GuestMustafa is a Staff Product Designer at Twitter working on design systems. A quirky episode on ghosts, hauntings and horror on this week's Mehfil. Two women writers from India and Pakistan interrogate ghostly encounters and how to write about them. Host Amrita Ghosh welcomes Jessica Faleiro from Goa (India) and Sehyr Mirza from Lahore (Pakistan) to explore the writing of ghosts, hauntings and horror on a personal level as well as with regards to collective traumas such as the Partition or colonial histories. The writers speak of childhood experiences with haunted houses, ghostly sightings and collective psychosomatic experiences. They reflect on whether stories of paranormal afterlives create narratives of resistance in the present. Faleiro speaks about her “real” ghostly experience in her grandmother's ancestral house that sent her off on a journey to write about these topics. Mirza also recalls her grandmother's poignant and moving tales from before the Partition as well as horrifying stories during the period of Partition that inspired Mirza to write. Both writers discuss the rich repertoire of the horror genre within the South Asian context starting with the simple traditions of families and friends gathering around to narrate spooky stories. Ghosh asks the writers about their books. Faleiro's book Afterlife: Ghost Stories from Goa excavates Goa's rich history by weaving in the Spanish Inquisition and Portuguese colonialism through paranormal encounters set within the present. Mirza talks about her edited anthology titled The Other in the Mirror: Stories from India and Pakistan in which she takes on the ghost of the Partition that continues to haunt people and that still creates fear of the “other" by continuing to maintain borders and divisions. She also speaks of her own story within that collection, one that instrumentalizes haunting for political symbolism. Faleiro and Mirza also point to new trends in literature and films within the horror genre in India and Pakistan and the possibilities opened up by the rise of digital media. Lastly, the conversations moves to ask if scary stories set us free from our fears or whether they simply serve to make us more afraid.Jessica Faleiro's fiction, poetry, essays and travel pieces have been published in Asia Literary Review, Forbes, Indian Quarterly, IndiaCurrents, Coldnoon, Joao Roque Literary Journal, Mascara Literary Review, Muse India and the Times of India as well as in various anthologies. Her first book Afterlife: Ghost stories from Goa (2012) is about a Goan family and their ‘ghostly' encounters and her second book The Delicate Balance of Little Lives (2018) is a collection of interlinked stories about five middle-class Goan women trying to cope with loss. She won the Joao Roque Literary Award ‘Best in Fiction 2017 for her short story ‘Unmatched.' Faleiro is currently the Commissioning Editor for the Joao Roque Literary Journal. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Kingston University, UK, talks about creativity, and runs creative writing workshops.Sehyr Mirza is a journalist and creative writer based in Lahore, Pakistan. Her work has appeared in The BBC, Deutsche Welle, Dawn, The News International, Outlook India, Huffington Post, The Wire, Pakistan Today and other outlets. One of the most unfortunate developments in the post internet age is the loss of town and local newspapers. Our guest Andy Heintz is a veteran of that era. One of the many advantages of localized journalism is what I personally was trained to report as first order of business back when I was a journalist in the 80s and 90s: the "big five" of who, what, where, how and why. You start from basic facts about a school board, the water table, farm food production, the weather, elections and so on. After that you can interpret as much as you like, but there had to be a consensus concerning facts. Our guest Andy Heintz learned the art of this type of reporting in the American Midwest. And like other reporters, he is still very much with us, even if this or that newspaper is not - making me hopeful that this necessary function in society can be rejuvenated. Heintz is also a political activist and a drug counselor and I hope the fact that we got into all of these subjects will help the audience feel invigorated as to the function of basic journalism as well as whatever interpretations they will realize once in command of basic facts. Close regular audiences of our podcast should realize that I don't love politics as a field as much as I do some other things yet it remains an indispensable, even relentless fact itself of all of our daily lives. Andy's Bio Andy Heintz is a freelance writer who covers human rights, democracy, women's rights, environmental issues, labor rights and cultural issues. Ammar Ali Jan (Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement) speaks at the Oxford South Asian Intellectual History Seminar on 17 January 2022. For queries, please contact the seminar convenor at saih@history.ox.ac.uk. This talk will discuss salient features of authoritarian rule in Pakistan. First, the permanent state of emergency that shapes political life in the country fuels arbitrary and whimsical forms of governance. The perpetual violation of the constitution by the ruling classes tells us that rather than viewing the Pakistani state as theocratic, it might be better to suggest that the country's crisis results from the fact that it lacks any political theology or sacred document. Second, the case of missing persons is emblematic of the nature of power in the country as it is the invisible ink through which sovereign power simultaneously reveals and veils itself. Such disavowed forms of violence show that "erasure" remains a central, yet under examined aspect of the exercise of modern power. Finally, the controlled nature of democracy in Pakistan results in a tense dynamic between the form and content of authoritarian rule. For historical reasons, democracy is the necessary form through which authoritarian rule is justified in the country, a contradiction that also opens up important space for oppositional politics. Carefully considering these themes makes it possible to intervene in debates on the global itinerary of democracy and resistance in the time of global authoritarianism. Dr Ammar Ali Jan is an academic and left-wing political activist based in Lahore, Pakistan. Dr Jan has a Doctorate in History from the University of Cambridge, where he worked on the encounter between anti-colonial thought and Marxism in colonial India. His book, Rule by Fear: Eight Theses on Authoritarianism in Pakistan (Folio Books, 2021), explains the political, economic and social roots of authoritarianism in the country, focusing on the structural features propelling the rising militarisation of society. He is a regular contributor to a number of leading publications, including The News International, Al-Jazeera, EPW and The Jacobin. At present, Dr. Jan is a member of the Haqooq-e-Khalq (People's Rights) Movement, an anti-capitalist organisation that is working among workers, farmers, students and women to build an alternative political project. He is also a Cabinet Member of the Progressive International and does a weekly show on Naya Daur. Dr Jan was recently fired from his teaching post and charged with sedition as part of a crackdown against dissenting voices.

David is a former Criminal Barrister with over 20 year's experience and a 3rd Degree Black Belt, who now runs a successful martial arts academy in London. He has worked on such cases as the Victoria Climbie case which brought about major changes to child protection policies in the UK and the News International – “phone hacking” case which employees of the now defunct News of The World (after 168 years in business) were accused of engaging in phone hacking, police bribery, and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of stories. His pursuit and intensity for the martial arts has been on par with his pursuit to find the truth in a court of law.
How to persuade anyone to do (almost) anything - Lee Warren Lee Warren is a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator and he is author of the award-winning book: A Busy Person's Guide to Great Presenting. Lee has had a pretty unconventional career path as he started out as a professional magician, performing at one point for the royal family. One of Lee's popular keynote topics is 'How to Persuade Anyone to do Anything!' And that's the topic that we dive into here. About Lee Lee was a professional magician for 20 years, is a member of the world-famous Magic Circle and was described by Prince William as ‘absolutely amazing'. A lover of live theatre, Lee has written theatre works for The Almeida Theatre, and been a commissioned writer at The Royal Opera House. Fluent in Spanish, Lee is very good at playing the piano badly! In a previous life, Lee was a sales director at News International and he now combines this background in magic, theatre and sales to give presentations, keynotes, workshops and coaching to firms including Deloitte, Shell, Laing O'Rourke, Roche, EY, Barclays Wealth and HSBC, helping people to become more persuasive and connected, sell more, present better and increase their ability to get their messages across confidently to colleagues and clients. Over time, Lee was increasingly invited not just to perform magic to clients, but to speak at their events. Realising that this was his 'true niche', in 2010 he become a full-time conference speaker and workshop leader and since then has spoken all over the globe at hundreds of events. In 2018, Lee's first book was published – ‘The Busy Person's Guide To Great Presenting'. In March 2019, it was the highly-commended runner-up in the 'Business Book Of The Year Awards'. He calls it his ‘first' because he has four more planned in his head. Now, he just needs to find the time to write them… for full show notes and links please head to: theideaslab.org/leewarren Music provided by Argofox: TheDiabolicalWaffle - My Wish https://youtu.be/sRWEMjYR6e4
