Jason “Foxy” Fox embodies resilience forged through two decades of elite military service and a deeply personal battle with mental health. Enlisting in the Royal Marines at 16, he rose through the ranks to join the UK's clandestine Special Boat Service (SBS), where he led high-stakes operations across Iraq, Afghanistan, and other global hotspots for 10 years. From hostage rescues to counter-narcotics missions, Fox operated at the razor's edge of combat, earning expertise in demolitions, jungle survival, and maritime counter-terrorism. Yet beneath the hardened exterior lay a brewing storm – the psychological toll of relentless combat zones and fractured personal relationships culminated in a 2012 medical discharge diagnosed with PTSD. Adrift after leaving the forces, Fox faced what he describes as his “darkest hour”: a collapsing marriage, toxic relationships, and spiralling suicidal thoughts. “I was a mess,” he recalls. “I'd built this identity as an invincible soldier, but admitting I needed help felt like weakness”[9][18]. His turning point came through therapy and organisations like Rock2Recovery, where he learned to reframe vulnerability as strength. This journey inspired his Sunday Times bestselling memoir *Battle Scars*, a raw account of confronting mental health struggles that resonated far beyond military circles. Fox's second act has seen him become a beacon of hope through television and advocacy. As a lead instructor on Channel 4's *SAS: Who Dares Wins* since 2015, he tests civilians and celebrities alike with brutal Special Forces training drills, using the show as a platform to discuss emotional resilience. His investigative series *Inside the Real Narcos* further showcased his ability to thrive under pressure, embedding with drug cartels in Latin America[1][4]. Beyond screens, Fox co-founded BreakPoint, a team-building company applying military strategies to corporate challenges, and delivers keynote speeches on leadership and overcoming adversity. Now a prominent mental health advocate, Fox emphasises that “PTSD isn't just a soldier's struggle – life can traumatise anyone”. Through his 2022 *Life at the Limit* speaking tour and ongoing work, he teaches practical techniques for managing stress: acknowledging fears, creating action plans, and finding purpose through service. From surviving Taliban ambushes to navigating depression's trenches, Fox's story proves that even the toughest battles can be won – not through sheer force, but by embracing vulnerability and supporting others on their journeys. As he puts it: “True strength isn't about being unbreakable. It's about learning how to rebuild when you do”. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

But the former Royal Marines Commando and Special Forces Soldier turned renowned author and media personality is also hugely keen on golf – having got into the sport after the Covid lockdowns. After partnering recently with clothing company Stromberg, he joins our Matt Chivers to chat about the positive effects golf can have on mental health, what the sport means to him, and how tackling it might be one of the biggest challenges he has taken on… Listeners should note that, at times, some explicit language is used.
After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her, former advertising professional, turned fitness pioneer and award-winning entrepreneur, Vicki Anstey became (age 41) one of the first ever women to participate in Channel 4's ‘SAS Who Dares Wins', reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, she and 2 other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her latest endeavour (a second Guinness World Record) was to cycle 3,000 miles in the ‘World's Toughest Bike Race' as a team of four women from West to East coast America in just 6 days 19 hours and 38 minutes. Vicki has also completed ultra distance runs (covering 250kms and carrying everything she needed to survive) in some of the World's most extreme environments – crossing the Arctic in temperatures of -35 degrees and the Savannnahs of Kenya in blistering 50 degree heat. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! Comedy legend and SAS: Who Dares Wins veteran, Shazia Mirza, joins Nihal for an in-depth chat. They talk Oasis, growing up as a Muslim woman and how unphased she was by the SAS.Nihal Arthanayake presents his new Sunday evening show and podcast, featuring exclusive in-depth interviews with headline guests across entertainment, sport, culture and politics.
Send us a textOn this weeks episode I speak to former SAS: Who Dares Wins contestant and now author, James Gwinnett.James has had a colourful past to say the least! After a serious neck injury ended his rugby career, he fell into a deep depression that turned into alcoholism. But after seeing the London marathon on TV, he decided enough was enough and sought professional help.AA and running helped him quit his drinking and set him up with his new passion of running. The London marathon was just the beginning and he quickly found himself signing top for some big ultras! including the 145 mile Kent and Avon canal race. (where he came a very respectable 2nd place)This is where he met our mutual friend Matt Fynn and struck up a conversation about their shared troubled past.James realised that in capturing the stories of others that have overcome great odds to achieve something in life, he was building up conversations that could help others navigate similar struggles. This is how the book was born!Ready Set Life is a collection of his own stories of struggle and change, but also that of many others. From former special forces, doctors, ultra runners, a former heroin addict, polar explorer and an England rugby captain....to name just a few.The book is in his own words, a cynical look at society and although it deals with some serious subject matter, it is equally as funny as it is serious!Go buy the book on Amazon. https://amzn.eu/d/4mz2kfoURS

What happens when you leave a situation that is holding you back and you start betting on yourself? Anything becomes possible in the case of today's guest, Vicki Anstey. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her, this former advertising professional, turned fitness pioneer and award-winning entrepreneur, became (at age 41) one of the first ever women to participate in Channel 4's ‘SAS Who Dares Wins', reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, she and two other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her most recent endeavor was a five day race in one of the northernmost, remote parts of the world, The Arctic. She covered a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive.Up next? She and a team of three other women (Four the Record) are tackling the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. They are attempting to break the women's world record in this event. On paper, Vicki is an avid adventurer, but her biggest achievements are less about the adventures, and more about her self-discovery. In times of adversity and extreme difficulty, Vicki learned to tap into her self-reliance, trust, and emotional endurance.Today, Vicki shares her personal story with Sara, including:Her career changes and personal growth from advertising executive to entrepreneurHow she followed her gut instincts, which led to Vicki opening the first Barre studio in the UKThe personal and professional growth that stemmed from leaving her controlling relationshipHer transformation from “non-athlete” to extreme adventurerOvercoming her personal fears and adapting to challenges in all of her experiencesLessons learned from her personal and physical adversityHoning the skill of emotional endurance, which involves understanding, processing, and letting go of emotions, rather than just tolerating themDeveloping the muscles of self-reliance, mental toughness, and resilience, especially in times of turmoil and extreme personal difficulty What's next? Joining me on #MondayMile this week is @jason_carl_fox – author, mental health advocate, former Special Forces operative and current SAS: Who Dares Wins Directing Staff. During an incredibly brave and vulnerable chat, we dig deep into Jason's life and career. He tells all about his path into the military, and how his natural desire for challenge drew him to the Special Forces. We also touch on the reality of SAS: Who Dares Wins, including how it compares to real SAS selection (it doesn't), whether he feels bad for tormenting recruits (he doesn't) and whether he thinks I could handle an interrogation scenario (he DEFINITELY doesn't). He also spills all about THAT viral Matt Hancock moment. Jason is also incredibly open with me about the lowest point in his journey – an abandoned attempt to take his own life. After, being diagnosed with PTSD in 2012, Jason was discharged from the military and was left to wrestle with drastically changed personal and professional circumstances, sending his mental health spiralling. He talks about his rock bottom, and the moment he decided to be honest with himself and others, take therapy seriously and do the work to save his own life. It's powerful stuff, and it's really amazing to hear it from a man like Jason, who now uses his own story to help others. One of the most important episodes we've ever done – thank you so much for sharing with me Jason! Listen now on all podcast platforms, and watch on YouTube. #mondaymile #jasonfox #saswhodareswins

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains content about suicide. Jason Fox spent 20 years in the special forces, carrying out perilous missions in the most remote & harsh environments. But it's when he left the military after being diagnosed with PTSD that his story really took a turn. Now a staple on our screens on SAS: Who Dares Wins, Jason has used his platform to speak openly about his mental health struggles and how he manages them. This was such a fascinating conversation, and I can't thank Jason enough for being so vulnerable. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it. Hosted on Acast. No one is more qualified than Jay Morton to describe what that really takes to be one of the best. Jay's goal has always been to excel in his field. But growing up with a short attention span, he always gets into trouble. He left school with minimal grades and joined the military. He was lucky enough that he went into mountain troop and was exposed to climbing, skiing, and to the beauty of mountains which is something that the military can't provide. It was an eye-opener for him and felt that there's more out there in life than just being in the Special Forces. 14 years in the military, 4 years in the Parachute Regiment, 10 years in the S.A.S, x2 Everest Summits, and he is even a Directing Staff on Channel 4's SAS: Who Dares Wins and an Author. Have I missed anything? During my conversation with Jay, he shared how he decided to leave the military and forge a new career for himself, how he wanted to join the military as a kid growing up, and how his short attention span has enabled him to discover what he likes. Jay has also openly discussed the things he fears and the importance of a growth mindset. Find out more about Jay Morton via Instagram & Website. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Today we hear an incredible Combat Story from across the pond from a legendary UK SAS operator Billy Billingham who served over 30 years with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, Africa, and many other places we can't discuss. Billy came from an extremely challenging childhood drinking and fighting on the streets of Birmingham to being appointed a Member of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for his efforts on select hostage rescues and serving as the SAS Ground Commander on what is known as 7/7 or the deadly coordinated attacks in London on July 7th, 2005. Billy went from being the absolute elite leader, working alongside our own Delta and DEVGRU operators for years in the post-9/11 world, to hanging up his uniform and finding a new path. He has know written an autobiography aptly titled ‘The Hard Way' and two fiction novels based on his own exploits titled ‘Call to Kill' and ‘Survive to Fight' (think SAS meets 007). He is also a lead on two incredibly successful programs in the UK and Australia titled “SAS: Who Dares Wins” where he and other special operators take civilians and celebrities through punishing special ops training; he shared that the show is coming to the US soon! He and his wife run a charity organization and he does public speaking engagements across the UK. I hope you enjoy this incredibly humble story that takes us inside the “Interest Room” (which I learned is the term for the SAS Team Room) and the highs and lows of a life well-lived at the tip of the spear from our UK brothers and sisters as much as I did. #military #veteran Find Billy Online: - Instagram @billingham22b https://www.instagram.com/billingham22b/ - Twitter @billingham229b https://twitter.com/billingham229b - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MarkBillinghamSAS/ - Deux Mains Academy @rebuildglobally https://www.instagram.com/rebuildglobally/ - Billy's Website https://www.markbillybillingham.com/about Find Ryan Online: - Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory - Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/ - Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory - Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial - Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial - Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus - Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio Jungle Show Notes 0:00 - Intro 0:41 - Guest Introduction (Billy Billingham) 2:36 - Interview begins 5:11 - Rough childhood in Peaky Blinders neighborhood in Birmingham, England 17:26 -Cadet School experience 22:12 - Overcoming getting burned by caustic soda at 15 yrs old and almost dying in a gang fight to still join the military 28:30 - Joining The Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) 30:03 - Lessons from the PARAs and first jump in the jungle of Belize 42:48 - First time in a combat zone in Cypress 44:23 - Fighting terrorists in Ireland 48:15 - Why SAS route and the brutal training and selection process 57:50 - Path after SAS selection into Mountain Troupe 1:01:25 - Excitement of first op in first week as SAS 1:04:17 - Squad "Interest rooms" 1:05:45 - The squadron dynamic and respect for those who came before 1:09:21 - Why the B Squadron are characterized as the "rogues" 1:11:12 - Combat Story - A hostage rescue during a bloody time in Bosnia 1:19:36 - The sixth sense that comes with experience 1:2102 - Emotions after a mission and after getting out 1:24:25 - Where were you on 7/7 during London bombings? 1:27:56 - TV show "SAS: Who Dares Wins" and what is coming to the US 1:30:40 - "The Hard Way" autobiography and "Call to Kill" novel 1:35:46 - What did you carry into combat? 1:39:40 - Would you do it again? 1:42:55 - Listener comments and shout outs This video covers the following subjects: - SAS Sergeant Major - 7/7 SAS Ground CDR - SAS Ground Commander - UK SAS operator Billy Billingham Billy is a certified SF and Counter Terrorist Sniper Instructor, Advanced Evasive Driving Instructor, Tracking/Jungle Warfare/Navigation Instructor, Demolition/Sabotage Instructor, Ski Mountaineering/Rock Climbing/Abseiling/Ice climbing Instructor, Combat Survival/RTI Instructor, Counter Terrorist Instructor (all options) and has worked as a Patrol Medic/Trauma Life Support agent for 5 hospital attachments.
