"I've also learned in this rewilding experiment that so much of our time as writers takes place off the page, as we're thinking about our concepts, as we're doing research, and when I actually do come to the page and have a chance to actually type out these ideas, I've done so much pre-writing over the course of the previous season that that draft comes really easily to me," says Megan Baxter, author of three books of nonfiction, including Farm Girl: A Memoir (Green Writers Press).Megan has got it figured out, man. She has won numerous national awards, including a Pushcart Prize. Her essay collection Twenty Square Feet of Skin was longlisted for the 2024 PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. Megan got on my radar when I was doing Prefontaine research and I was thumbing through my stack of True Stories, that chapbook Creative Nonfiction used to put out. I saw this essay titled “On Running” and I was like well shoot, I need to study this. Then I reached out to her and she sent me her essay collections and her memoir Farm Girl, so we dig into that.Megan's work has appeared in The Threepenny Review, Hotel Amerika, River Teeth, and others. In this episode of the Remarkable Retail podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Steve Dennis begin with a news segment covering recent market developments, notably the "tariff turmoil" between the US and China. They discuss how the US has partially de-escalated its stance, with tariffs dropping from a proposed 145% to 30%, creating a 90-day window for retailers to import products. However, they emphasize that smaller retailers remain disproportionately affected due to limited resources compared to giants like Home Depot. The hosts also cover recent retail earnings reports, including Walmart's strong comp store sales growth despite withdrawing Q2 guidance, and their strategic pricing approach to tariff impacts. Other earnings news included On Running's impressive 40% sales growth, while American Eagle, JC Penney, and Burberry reported significant losses. Additional news touched on refinancing challenges at Kohl's, potential bankruptcy concerns at Saks, and Dick's Sporting Goods' surprising acquisition of Foot Locker. The featured interview with Stephen Yalof, CEO and President of Tanger, explores his extensive career spanning retail real estate, including roles at New Plan Realty Trust, Gap, Ralph Lauren, and Simon before joining Tanger in 2020 – humorously noting he arrived when "every one of their 3,000 stores was closed" due to COVID.Yalof provides a fascinating historical perspective on outlet centers, explaining how they evolved from manufacturers' sales of returned items and factory seconds to a strategic retail channel. He details how the Tanger family themselves were shirt manufacturers who realized they were "selling more stuff out the back door than out the front door" before creating the first outlet center in Burlington, North Carolina. The conversation explores how vertical retailers like Gap transformed the model, creating consolidation stores for excess inventory before establishing dedicated outlet locations. This evolution progressed from pure excess inventory management to serving aspirational customers who understand brands but can't afford full price – what Yalof describes as bringing customers "into your ecosystem."In response to competition from online and fast-fashion retailers, Yalof explains Tanger's strategy shift from purely "power shopping" to full-service experiences with improved food, entertainment, and amenities. He compares this to how stadiums have evolved despite at-home viewing advances, stating, "We're the general merchandise managers of our shopping centers... it's about picking the right uses, right experiences, the right amenities."The interview concludes with insights into Tanger's digital engagement strategies, including how they leverage customer data to create targeted marketing campaigns and provide stackable discounts through retailer partnerships, guided by their vision of "using customer insight to inform the future of shopping." What does it take to have an amazing race in a type of terrain that is a different style from what you're normally used to? For Jeff Mogavero, an accomplished mountain ultrarunner for On Running, he looked to answer that question by racing in the Javelina Jundred 100 miler, just months after completing UTMB. And even though the flatter course was relatively unique territory for Jeff based on his past races, he was able to finish second place and win a Golden Ticket to Western States 100! How did he do it? In this episode he shares his training, race strategy, hydration strategy, and mindset that all led to his special day in the desert. We cover things such as: How to go from mountain training to flat training Optimizing mindset both in training and in the race How to nail hydration (even if it has been a struggle point in the past) How to execute a plan in a race, even when the conditions are tough How to enjoy the process amidst hard training Huge thank you to Jeff for coming on the show! *Full episode on Patreon* In this month's letter, we look at a handful of digital assets that have caught my attention this week (and affirm the STARGIRL worldview): Zendaya for On Running, Livvy Dunne's first arty editorial, and our first BTS look at Sydney Sweeney beefed up as a boxer. I also discuss Ariana Grande on SNL and explain why none of the Pop Princess contenders (Charli, Chappell, Sabrina, Tate, Camila) are Stargirls. Plus, an emo recap on my wedding, which was maybe the happiest I've ever been in my life. Discussed: Zendaya x On partnership announcement (June 2024) Short film: “Zendaya's fresh perspectives on movement” The Zendaya Edit (capsule for On) “The Body Is Art” FKA Twigs x On at London Fashion Week Livvy Dunne x FLAUNT magazine photos “No Room for Complacency in the Uncharted Stratosphere,” profile of Livvy in FLAUNT by Megan Armstrong, photos by Katherine Goguen, styling by Dylan Wang Sydney BTS shots as boxer Christy Martin GirlBossTown on TikTok predicting Sydney's Charlize Theron Monster arc last February Sydney x Dr. Squatch (this was a No for me)
To those who make contact. . . This week we tackle the original New Age spiritual guru, our beloved Marianne Williamson. We delve into her decades-long search for Maximum Aliveness, and discuss the principles that have most profoundly affected me in her work: personal responsibility, surrender, inner peace, and a belief in the miraculous. Discussed: The Money Game “The Body Is Art” FKA Twigs x On Running at London Fashion Week A Return to Love, Marianne Williamson (1992) A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever, Marianne Williamson (2010) “Marianne's Faithful,” Leslie Bennetts in Vanity Fair, 1991 “The Divine Miss W,” Susan Schindehette in People Magazine (1992) “Marianne Williamson Is Campaigning for a Miracle,” Amanda Fortini in ELLE (2014) “Emotional Self-Sufficiency” lecture by Marianne given in 1988

Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! Steve W's been on holiday this week, so this show was recorded on August 16th. Don't worry, though, there's still been plenty to talk about. We're sticking to the globetrotting theme for our quickfire round. Latin American StoneCo is on the list – Steve W made a mess of buying and selling it a few years ago, but how's it doing now? After that, we're off to the Swiss Alps to talk about On Running, the US for an update on Deere, and Uruguay to find out about dLocal. But which, if any, have the Steves been buying recently? Tencent is one of those stocks that people either love or hate, mostly depending on how they feel about investing in Chinese equities. But Steve D has been seeing promising signs from the company. The latest update features decent growth and a widening moat. So the big question for investors is when the value equation becomes attractive enough to offset the obvious risk of the VIE structure. Five Below is a stock that probably isn't on the radar of most UK investors. But Steve W thinks it looks interesting after a big fall since the start of the year. Things have started to look up just recently for the stock, though, so is it too late to buy? With the company exposed to under-pressure consumers in the US, the moment to strike might have passed. As always, we're interested in what's been going on with Monday.com. And as always, it's probably better and more interesting than the attention it gets. It's easy to see why Steve D likes it – the company is growing like a weed and the stock is close to its IPO price. Could that mean there's an opportunity here with investors looking the other way? Meta's Threads has seen significant growth and has become a viable business opportunity. Disney has turned around its performance, with increased revenue and profitability, especially in its parks division. This episode we welcome Michael Affronti, the SVP & General Manager of the Commerce Cloud business at Salesforce for a fascinating look at the rapidly evolving world of generative AI. In an expansive, yet highly practical, discussion Michael helps us separate the hope from the hype and "chalks the field" on the most important applications to automate mundane tasks or enhance the customer experience. We also go deep on where retailers are already gaining traction and where they need to begin to test and learn. But first we open up with our take on the most interesting recent retail news, including a new retail monitor just launched by CNBC and the NRF and a quick look at what it tells us. Then we unpack lots of retail earnings, which were mostly disappointing--and in a few cases downright scary (Kohl's, Macy's, Allbirds, and most of luxury). Yet Walmart, Abercrombie & Fitch, the off-price apparel players, and, most notably On Running, managed to rise above the rest. We close with our view that BFCM may ultimately be much ado about nothing much.About MichaelMichael is the SVP & General Manager of Commerce Cloud at Salesforce, overseeing the various Commerce Cloud products and services that enable customers to build commerce experiences and grow revenue their way. I think it's safe to say that many people are suffering, not just from major public health concerns and economic hardship, but also from loneliness—the prevalence of which has skyrocketed in recent years. Studies indicate that about half of U.S. adults have reported experiencing loneliness. The impact of this extends beyond a decline in mental health, increasing the risk of heart disease, dementia, stroke, and even premature death. It's a problem today's guest has officially labeled an epidemic—and has made his mission to ameliorate. Meet the 21st Surgeon General of the United States, Vice Admiral Dr. Vivek Murthy. Today Dr. Murthy explains how we arrived at this juncture of disconnection and why it is so vitally important to redress. We also discuss the compound effects of loneliness on our health as individuals and as a society, and what we can do to engender our lives with more connection, companionship, and community. It was an honor to host an important conversation with such an esteemed individual. I was deeply impacted by what he shared and suspect you may feel the same.
