This book, by an ex-SAS soldier, explains how the qualities nurtured in the Special Forces can be effectively deployed in business. Who Dares Wins in Business is much more than a military analogy in the tradition of leadership secrets of Genghis Khan, Sun Tzu and the rest. This is a book by a person who served as a captain in the regular SAS before pursuing a business career that has spanned multiple sectors and markets over two decades. Using concrete research and a refreshing absence of theory and hyperbole, Joff Sharpe's approach is illustrated with stories and case studies from the SAS and a wide range of businesses. Amusing, informative, and occasionally shocking, this is a book for executives or leaders willing to take a more courageous approach, and for anyone interested in applying tried-and-tested military approaches to secure success in their own life. Praise for Who Dares Wins in Business : 'In an era when the hard-won lessons of military operations are seldom transferred first-hand to the commercial battle-ground, Sharpe offers a unique and grounded military "phronesis" examining the virtues of courage and resilience. A must read' - Dr Bryan Watters OBE, Professor of Leadership, Cranfield University 'A good read. Sharpe has certainly done his homework, and generated lots of interesting, relevant facts and stories from both military and corresponding business situations' - Ben Legg, CEO, AdKnowledge Joff Sharpe is a former member of the SAS who has also run an internet company for Rupert Murdoch, been Piers Morgan's HR director, run operations for a billion-pound investment trust and lived among the Iban people of Borneo. He has also helped many international companies to improve their performance. In the early hours of the 15th May 1982 three SeaKing helicopters lifted off the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes in complete darkness. On board were 42 soldiers of the Special Air Service - their destination, an enemy airfield whose position threatened the entire British landing force. The stakes were high. If the assault failed, the British could not only lose nearly half its special forces soldiers in one go but an Argentinian strike from the airbase could lead to the failure of the troop landings... and the war itself. Like any SAS raid it was a huge roll of the dice, but as the regiment's motto says, Who Dares Wins and the troopers on board those helicopters had no intention of losing...They were... The Soviet Century, Archaeology of a Lost World). Over een tragische man wiens reputatie in bijna elk opzicht onverdiend blijkt. Today's guest is Olivia Foster who is a TV producer working for shows like This Morning, Who Dares Wins and many more. Before working in TV, Olivia was a journalist working for magazines such as Heat, Grazia and Marie Claire, which she loved. She talks about how she finds TV a far more dynamic medium to work in. She also explains what a producer actually does, because few of us know (I do because I was a producer myself full-time with ITV) and it involves far more than you could imagine. So, what if you want to be on TV?  Olivia's great tip for this is to get yourself in front of a camera, so that you can build up your confidence, and talk without falling over words. Film yourself on your phone, get other people to film you, do social media live talks, give talks in front of audiences - try everything to get yourself out there. Be visible and present.  She shares with me her love of funny stories, and some of the bonkers stories that can appear on TV, plus on the flip side, she also likes the warm and fuzzy moments too. Olivia also talks about the types of ideas that she will be looking for over in the coming months.  Like many of my journalist guests who have been on before, Olivia talks about the importance of knowing about the person you are pitching your ideas to. Don't just send something over without checking out the sort of stories that the relevant journalist works on. We end with a discussion about social media, AI and how things are changing.  To contact Olivia: Twitter: https://twitter.com/LivsFoster Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/livsfoster/ If you would like to contact me: www.Scottmedia.uk or if you'd like to join my free Facebook group it's Fiona Scott's PR Tribe.

Ryan appeared in several major musicals in London's West End, spending four years in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Evita in the role of Magaldi and then playing Ché under the direction of Hal Prince.[1] He went on to appear in a cameo in the film version of the musical directed by Alan Parker. He left Evita to play Mac in the SAS action film Who Dares Wins for director Ian Sharp. In 2003, Ryan worked as a swordmaster and fight director on the film King Arthur directed by Antoine Fuqua. His duties included consulting with the director and writer regarding designing all aspects of the knights fighting styles, training all the principal actors including Keira Knightley, Clive Owen and Stellan Skarsgård, planning and choreographing their action. In 2000, Ryan played U.S. theatres with original Monty Python member Eric Idle, performing comedy roles in Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python at venues including New York's Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. The team later recorded the show exclusively for the Comedy Channel. He then went on to play John Dickinson in the Los Angeles stage production of 1776 directed by Gordon Hunt. Ryan began working on the 2007 film Transformers during filming as the on-set voice of several different robots. This work continued throughout filming and into editing, before the actual casting of voice-over talent. He was then cast as the voice of the character Bumblebee. Ryan also voices Ironhide and Hoist for the Activision video game based on the film. When Ryan was in the studio recording his lines for the actors on set, Michael Bay used the lines Ryan recorded for Bumblebee in the film. But Ryan didn't know that it would be used, and if so he said he would have used a different younger voice. He returned to voice Bumblebee as well as Jetfire for the sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the Activision Game based on the film. In early 2009, Ryan continued voice work on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen working directly with Michael Bay and Alex Kurtzman almost right up to the release of the film. Ryan is an author and has written for DC Comics and Harper Collins as well as writing several screenplays. Ryan was the co-creator, along with artist Chesca Potter, of the Greenwood Tarot, a variation on the standard tarot deck involving pre-historic European imagery. Welcome back to Who Dares Wins for Season 2! Anthony sits down with two of the founding members of Dude Perfect, Cody Jones and Coby Cotton, and how it came to be. Five college roommates went viral and were faced with a decision: pursue a career in creating YouTube videos (at a time when it wasn't a common or seemingly viable way to make a living) or a typical 9-5 role. They decided to "go big" and created the brand we all know and love today. Cody and Coby speak about the challenges they've faced growing their company, what led to that decision to "go big," and how they bring that mindset to every project. Josh Fagen, a longtime trusted advisor, also sits down with Anthony to talk about the conditions in which paid sabbaticals for employees is a smart idea, and whether it makes sense to trust your gut to make decisions over consulting data. For more from Anthony, follow him on Twitter @AnthonyNoto.

If you sign up, it will also help the show so thank you in advance! Today we hear an incredible Combat Story from across the pond from a legendary UK SAS operator Billy Billingham who served over 30 years with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, Africa, and many other places we can't discuss. Billy came from an extremely challenging childhood drinking and fighting on the streets of Birmingham to being appointed a Member of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for his efforts on select hostage rescues and serving as the SAS Ground Commander on what is known as 7/7 or the deadly coordinated attacks in London on July 7th, 2005.  Billy went from being the absolute elite leader, working alongside our own Delta and DEVGRU operators for years in the post-9/11 world, to hanging up his uniform and finding a new path. He has know written an autobiography aptly titled ‘The Hard Way' and two fiction novels based on his own exploits titled ‘Call to Kill' and ‘Survive to Fight' (think SAS meets 007).  He is also a lead on two incredibly successful programs in the UK and Australia titled “SAS: Who Dares Wins” where he and other special operators take civilians and celebrities through punishing special ops training; he shared that the show is coming to the US soon! He and his wife run a charity organization and he does public speaking engagements across the UK. I hope you enjoy this incredibly humble story that takes us inside the “Interest Room” (which I learned is the term for the SAS Team Room) and the highs and lows of a life well-lived at the tip of the spear from our UK brothers and sisters as much as I did.  #military #veteran  Find Billy Online:  - Instagram @billingham22b https://www.instagram.com/billingham22b/  - Twitter @billingham229b https://twitter.com/billingham229b - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MarkBillinghamSAS/  - Deux Mains Academy @rebuildglobally https://www.instagram.com/rebuildglobally/ - Billy's Website https://www.markbillybillingham.com/about   Find Ryan Online:  - Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory - Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/ - Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory - Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial - Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial - Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus - Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio Jungle Show Notes 0:00 - Intro  0:41 - Guest Introduction (Billy Billingham)  2:36 - Interview begins  5:11 - Rough childhood in Peaky Blinders neighborhood in Birmingham, England 17:26 -Cadet School experience 22:12  - Overcoming getting burned by caustic soda at 15 yrs old and almost dying in a gang fight to still join the military   28:30 - Joining The Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 PARA)  30:03 - Lessons from the PARAs and first jump in the jungle of Belize  42:48 - First time in a combat zone in Cypress  44:23 -  Fighting terrorists in Ireland  48:15 - Why SAS route and the brutal training and selection process 57:50 - Path after SAS selection into Mountain Troupe  1:01:25 - Excitement of first op in first week as SAS 1:04:17 - Squad "Interest rooms"  1:05:45 - The squadron dynamic and respect for those who came before  1:09:21 - Why the B Squadron are characterized as the "rogues"  1:11:12 - Combat Story - A hostage rescue during a bloody time in Bosnia  1:19:36 - The sixth sense that comes with experience  1:2102 - Emotions after a mission and after getting out  1:24:25 -  Where were you on 7/7  during London bombings?  1:27:56 - TV show "SAS: Who Dares Wins" and what is coming to the US  1:30:40 - "The Hard Way" autobiography and "Call to Kill" novel  1:35:46 - What did you carry into combat? 1:39:40  - Would you do it again?  1:42:55 - Listener comments and shout outs    This video covers the following subjects:   - SAS Sergeant Major  - 7/7 SAS Ground CDR  - SAS Ground Commander  - UK SAS operator Billy Billingham   Billy is a certified SF and Counter Terrorist Sniper Instructor, Advanced Evasive Driving Instructor, Tracking/Jungle Warfare/Navigation Instructor, Demolition/Sabotage Instructor, Ski Mountaineering/Rock Climbing/Abseiling/Ice climbing Instructor, Combat Survival/RTI Instructor, Counter Terrorist Instructor (all options) and has worked as a Patrol Medic/Trauma Life Support agent for 5 hospital attachments.   If you would like to learn more about SAS Sergeant Major, Billy Billingham I suggest you look into our various other video clips: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCyApoJr-mNmdMNwdk22xEQ _________________________   Have I responded to all of your questions about SAS Sergeant Major, Billy Billingham?

A brave and thought-provoking episode where Rob speaks to Ollie Ollerton at breakpoint HQ. They discuss what's changed since they first met, dealing with trauma, mindset and of course business. KEY TAKEAWAYS  You can never beat or replace a face to face interaction. But there are so many things that can be done online and you can reach so many people. Be prepared to be dynamic. This is how Ollie survived the many ups and downs of both business and life. You can't fool the universe, your wants and desires are there no matter what decisions you think you have made. Ollie felt this massively when he was axed from Who Dares Wins. He was unhappy doing that show, this was the universe giving him a way out. Humans are designed to thrive with struggles. You need to be honest with yourself, if you are where you want to be and if you are happy. You should be constantly evolving. An experience with halogenics and the psychedelic drug ayahuasca in Costa Rica allowed Ollie to accept his past, acknowledge his mistakes and move forward in his life, healing past trauma and giving him direction. Good things don't just come from good events. The most growth and development comes from hardship. BEST MOMENTS  “They're trying to be who they were before the event, you're not that person anymore” “We are going to downsize to capitalise” “I'll lead by example and do it” “You're not dealing with it just by being positive” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://robmoore.com/podbooks ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Dominic Sandbrook is the author of eight books of modern history, and is best known for his books on Britain since the 1950s. The first volume, Never Had It So Good, covers the late 1950s and early 1960s. The second book, White Heat, looks at Britain in the heyday of the 1960s, and was later used as the background for a BBC drama. The third and fourth volumes, State of Emergency and Seasons in the Sun, cover the 1970s, and were adapted for television as the BBC documentary series The 70s. The fifth volume, Who Dares Wins, covers the early 1980s, including the first Thatcher administration, the Falklands War, the New Romantics, the birth of home computers and the tragic decline of Wolverhampton Wanderers. His new book series Adventures in Time, aimed at young readers, focuses on the six wives of Henry VIII and the Second World War. On this week’s Greatest Games Jonathan Wilson and Marcus Speller are joined by Dominic Sandbrook to discuss the 1954 exhibition match between English champions Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hungarian champions Budapest Honvéd. Under the Molineux floodlights and broadcast on the BBC, excitement swept across Wolverhampton and the entire nation for this one.  Honvéd starred many of the Mighty Magyars who finished as runners-up in the 1954 World Cup and had sent shockwaves through English football after becoming the first team from outside the British Isles to defeat England at Wembley. After the win, the English press coined Wolves the ‘champions of the world’, spurring a desire for more continental club football and the formation of regular contests under the guise of the European Cup. About the panel: Jonathan Wilson founded The Blizzard in 2011 and is editor of the magazine. He’s contributed to a number of publications including the Guardian and Sports Illustrated as well as having authored Behind the Curtain, Inverting the Pyramid, The Outsider, Angels with Dirty Faces and most recently The Names Heard Long Ago, among others. Staying cool under pressure is vital Importance of coaching in Admiral McRaven's life… and being pushed by them. He pushed himself  to his physical limits to set the school record for the mile with the help of a phone call from a coach. (Jerry Turnbow). Write letters to the parents/spouse/kids of the people you want to recognize. "Love on the people who love them." Failure can make you stronger —- Being assigned to “The Circus” in SEAL training helped him build resilience and a "never quit" attitude. Writing – He was a journalism major at Texas. Admiral McRaven has consistently worked to become a great writer. It is critical for leaders to be exceptional communicators... Both of the written AND spoken word. In July 1983, he was fired as a SEAL squadron leader for trying to change the way his squadron was organized, trained, and conducted missions. His response was the difference between a long, successful career, and quitting. Georgeann (his wife) offered him encouragement and said, ‘you’ve never quit at anything in your life and don’t start now’.  Admiral McRaven has always had great respect for the British Special Air Service: the famed SAS. The SAS motto was “Who Dares Wins.”  He said that even moments before the Bin Laden raid, his command sergeant major Chris Faris, quoted it to the SEALs preparing for the mission. To him that motto was more than just how special forces operated. It’s about how each of us should approach our lives… Life is a struggle and the potential for failure is ever present… Admiral McRaven walked us through the strategy development and the decision making process for the bin Laden raid: It was a team effort - Leon Panetta could have done it only as a CIA mission, but he reached out to Admiral McRaven because the mission was what was most important, not getting credit.  Great leaders recognize that it’s never about them. If you think it’s about you you’re probably not a good leader. It was still an extraordinarily difficult decision to green light the mission. Admiral McRaven described that conversations he had with President Obama. "If we got there and the guy on the third floor was just a tall Pakistani man, then President Obama would have been a 1 term president." The SEALs on the mission rehearsed and practiced  A LOT. No matter how much experience you have, you ALWAYS need to practice. The night of the bin Laden raid, Admiral McRaven was in charge of 10 other missions! He didn't have time to celebrate, he was focused on identifying the body, telling the President, and then paying close attention to the other missions he had going on that night. Courage — “without courage, men will be ruled by tyrants and despots. Without courage,  no great society can flourish. Without courage, the bullies of the world rise up.”  Over the course of a month he visited Saddam Hussein in the jail where they were holding him, he would rise to meet Admiral McRaven. McRaven would motion for him to go back to his cot. The message was clear, “you are no longer important.” Rise to the occasion.  Be your very best in the darkest moments – Think about the moment we are in right now. Great leaders rise to the occasion in the midst of a pandemic Books Admiral McRaven recommends- The Speed of Trust- Stephen M.R. Covey, It’s Your Ship - Michael Abrashoff No plan survives first contact with the enemy- things will go wrong and you need to plan accordingly. Be prepared, think through worst case. "Have a plan, work the plan, plan for the unexpected." Get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward. Don’t ever say “that’s not fair.”  The story of Moki Martin - bike accident that left him paralyzed

Topics Discussed in this Episode: The Arctic Circle Race and why we did it How we prepared for the race My thoughts on the journey What the experience was like Key Takeaways: Both mental and physical endurance are very much needed to take on this kind of challenge. Incredibly powerful things happen when you push yourself into your discomfort zone. You don’t have to go as big as we’ve gone with The Arctic Circle Race, it might be learning an instrument, going online dating, learning a new language, or playing a sport. Taking on a challenge and achieving something is good for your confidence and your resilience. You get a bit more comfortable in very uncomfortable situations. You feel a little more comfortable with unpredictability, and life is unpredictable. A key part of resilience is not your toughness. It’s not what you can endure. It’s more around if you have the tools to cope with the various things that life throws at you and the emotional bandwidth to deal with them. Action Steps: If you are doing a fundraising event, set a really big target and don’t be afraid to ask people to support you. Do something that takes you into your discomfort zone. Have a think about what that thing might be and make sure it’s the appropriate level of challenge at the appropriate time. Leanne said: “[The Arctic Circle Race] is absolutely brutal. It’s the most extraordinary challenge. It’s more like the world’s toughest herring boning and walking race with bits of skiing.” “If you feel that life is pretty smooth and you want to test yourself in some way, then start to look at what you can do. Kick some ideas around.” Thanks for listening!
