Wrapping Up & Highlights of Season 2

It's time to wrap up season 2 of the Around Flower Mound Podcast, and what a fantastic season it has been! If you weren't already convinced of the depth of character among our citizens, my hope is that these interviews have served to shed light on much of the goodness that our community has to offer. In fact, the fabulousness of Flower Mound hasn't gone unnoticed by the internet community. A recent study by smartasset.com, an online personal finance company, named Flower Mound the number four most livable small city in the entire United States. This is the second year in a row Flower Mound claimed that number four spot and it is the only Texas community in the top 30. Wow! Statistics aside, it truly is the people of Flower Mound that make it such a wonderful place to live. My twelve guests represented many walks of life and included our Mayor Derek France, mortgage expert with a heart Stacy Lynn Schriever, our town librarian Sue Ridnour, and business owner Yvonne Stewart and others. I am so thankful for the time and energy each guest I had the pleasure to interview over the last several months. Be sure and listen to any episodes you may have missed! As we break for the summer, I want to leave you with a thought of my own. I've been helping families buy and sell houses here in the Metroplex since 1995 and each transaction is truly a life-changing moment for them. This inspired me to go back and think about each house I've lived in, and reflect on it as a chapter of my life. After sharing this exercise with my family and seeing how impactful it can be, I created a handout to explain the process, which I would love to share with you. Please reach out to me through the links below to get a copy and explore the chapters in your own life. Thank you for listening and learning about the wonderful people who live right here in your community. Make sure to subscribe to the Around Flower Mound Podcast as well, as follow us on social media to keep in touch!Resources mentioned in this episode:Full list of Most Livable Small Cities in the U.S. – 2022 Edition:https://smartasset.com/data-studies/most-livable-small-cities-in-the-us-2022Have a listen to season 2 episodes:https://www.aroundflowermound.com/podcastAccess Town of Flower Mound Resources:https://www.flower-mound.com/Connect with the Town of Flower Moundhttps://flower-mound.com/899/Stay-ConnectedTo receive the "Our Homes Create the Chapters in the Story of Our LIves" framework to help you know yourself better, or to know someone deeper, email me:nicole@nicolesmith.net

A Lender with a Heart, with Stacy Lynn Schriever

If you're looking to buy a house, qualifying for a mortgage is one of the most important steps. Stacy Lynn Schriever is a residential mortgage loan originator and brand manager at Premier Nationwide lending, and she is dedicated to making the dream of homeownership a reality for her clients. Many people are overwhelmed by the process involved in qualifying for a mortgage. When considering why it seems so scary, Stacy points out that a lot of people try to be their own experts. Much like you wouldn't go to trial without a lawyer, or attempt your own surgery, having an experienced mortgage expert in your corner will make the process more successful. And success doesn't always mean an immediate “yes” on a mortgage decision. Sometimes Stacy's team needs to say, “not right now,” and provide additional guidance on how to qualify for that loan. Giving extra support is a key part of her business values, because she views each loan application as a whole person, not just a collection of numbers. In fact, it was helping her own parents become first time homeowners that has been one of the highlights of Stacy's career. Walking them through the process and then watching their excitement on moving day is a memory she'll always cherish.Whether the mortgage is for the family themselves or an investor who will rent it out to a family, Stacy makes every mortgage application decision with the people themselves in mind. As her team celebrates one year in their Flower Mound location, they are thrilled to support the community through educational programs for both Realtors and potential homebuyers.Takeaways from this episode: When looking to buy a house, whether a primary residence or investment property, it's important to choose a mortgage loan originator who is knowledgeable and caring. Stacy Lynn Schriever and her team consider each application carefully, thinking about the people behind the numbers. Buying a house often makes a lot more sense than renting long term. Giving back through educational programs for Realtors and potential homebuyers is helping make Flower Mound a stronger community. When you think about our town mayor or other politicians, do you picture a celebrity - aloof and unapproachable? Derek France, Mayor of Flower Mound, is determined to change that perception! A local businessman, Mayor France's first foray into local politics was joining the Animal Services Board and Veterans Board, a route which he highly recommends. It helped him understand how much local politics matter and that local politicians are just regular people. Mayor France loves the numerous opportunities being Mayor gives him to connect with the community - from reading at the elementary school to speaking at business meetings. He explains Flower Mound's government is a “weak mayor system” with responsibilities split among a council.  As Mayor, he provides guidance, while the city manager handles operational decisions.  He and the council members serve as volunteers - these are not paid positions.Positivity is inherent to his leadership style, as he encourages residents to have fun and get involved. Because there are so many places in the community for people to volunteer and events to enjoy, Mayor France has started his own email newsletter summarizing the options. This email combines information coming from Town departments like Parks and Recreation, with upcoming event calendars of citizen groups like the Chamber and Rotary Club. Signing up means you won't miss any of the ways to be involved in Flower Mound, so follow the link below to get on the list!Mayor France takes his work for the people of Flower Mound very much to heart, so next time you see him at the grocery store, don't be afraid to stop and say “hi!”Takeaways from this episode: Local government is very important. Everyone should get involved! Three easy ways to do that are through volunteering for a town council board or commission, joining a local club, and attending town council meetings.  Local government officials aren't celebrities, they work for the people of the town. What he wants us to prepare for is when we leave the Flower Mound “bubble" on vacation or when our young adult/children go away to college. Parents are excited to see these traits strengthening their children's character, as well as allowing them to receive awesome feedback from teachers.  To achieve these goals, he crafts creative approaches to keep students interested and coming back year after year. Being successful in school can be almost impossible for students who are hungry, wearing ill-fitting clothes, or lacking basic school supplies. Ann Pape Wilson, CEO of Communities in Schools North Texas (CISNT), is working hard to support these students in the Flower Mound area! In 2012, Ann learned about the non-profit Communities in Schools North Texas and was strongly drawn to their model, which puts the focus on long term support. Currently, they have about 65 full time and 65 part-time case managers in schools across 7 districts. Impacting over 6,000 at-risk students, these case managers are able to form a full picture of a student's life and understand what their academic and emotional needs are. The physical support for students in the program is immediate. If a student requires school supplies or other basic assistance, a CISNT site runner can provide it to them that same day. Volunteers and mentors are a vital part of the program, and a great way to get involved if you are passionate about helping students! One of CISNT core beliefs is that every child needs and deserves a one-to-one relationship with a caring adult. Ann has seen the difference this can make in setting students on a trajectory of success. Spending just 45 minutes a week with a child can encourage them on this path and open their eyes to possibilities for their future.Ann's goal through CISNT is for kids to learn to be resilient, to know who they are, and to have the skills they need after graduation. To meet these goals as a non-profit, they need members of the community like you to volunteer, donate, or attend one of their creative fundraisers throughout the year. Takeaways from this episode: Communities in Schools North Texas serve at risk students in the Denton County area through long term case management and student services.  CISNT is building a community to come alongside these students.  They focus on closing the gap of basic needs, so students are able to focus on academic success.  Mentors and other volunteers are needed to directly impact the students through weekly interaction. For Yvonne Stewart, the answer was to open Woodhouse Spa here in Flower Mound! After spending decades in the beauty industry with companies like Bath & Body Works and Ulta, Yvonne was a vice president faced with the choice of where to move to handle her regional responsibilities. Flower Mound won her vote with its wonderful residents and easy access to the DFW airport. When she learned about a franchise spa opportunity right as her kids were finishing college, Yvonne knew it was time for a change. She signed on the dotted line and looked all around the Dallas area for the perfect location for her new spa. You guessed it, Flower Mound fit the bill! Woodhouse Spa is located in the Shops at Highland Village, right on the edge of our town.Yvonne loves seeing how guests really anticipate the relaxing experience and plan to spend time slowing down and rejuvenating themselves. As they get a massage, nail service, or facial, it's a chance to disconnect and decompress. One of the biggest surprises in the business has been the way her family's involvement has evolved. Her husband as well as both of their daughters are there almost every day, and Yvonne is grateful for the skills they bring to the table, especially when it comes to tech! It's truly a family-operated business. With the traveling part of her career over, Yvonne was eager to get plugged in as a business owner in the community. She chose the Flower Mound Chamber and Rotary, and has built valuable friendships and connections over the years. The way she and her husband have been welcomed by life-long residents is so warming to hear about. They have found plenty of new ways to stay active. Yvonne's plan is to stay here long term, which means the Woodhouse Spa will be a part of our wonderful community for many years to come. Takeaways from this episode:  Yvonne Stewart was a highly successful corporate executive who originally moved to Flower Mound because of its small town feel and convenience to the DFW airport.  When she decided to start the family-operated Woodhouse Spa, she realized it was also the perfect place for a new business. The Woodhouse Spa offers many services including massages, facials, and nail services in a tranquil transformational environment that's both memorable and healthful.  Looking for a way to get plugged into the community, she joined the FM Chamber and Rotary and was welcomed with open arms. 022. Coach, Citizen of the Year, and Executive Director of the Cross Timbers' YMCA: the many lives of Jason Walter

Here in Flower Mound, we have a lot of residents who love the small town feeling so much they never left. In fact, it is the caring community that has kept Jason Walter rooted in our town since the fifth grade. As he grew up, he stayed because he loved the small town atmosphere, convenient location, and many opportunities to serve. Following in his grandfather's teachings of devotion to community, Jason won the 2019 Chamber Citizen of the Year award. Jason has been the executive director of the Cross Timbers YMCA since 2011. After realizing his calling as a teenager through a summer job at the Y, he has been a part of the driving force ever since. Along with youth sports, the active older adults program is one of their most popular. Jason learned that a lot of their members came in just to socialize and drink coffee. He started drinking coffee just so he could have the opportunity to talk and connect with them! He's also very passionate about their financial assistance programs, which allows struggling families to stay engaged at the Y even through job loss or pay reduction. If you're looking for an opportunity to get involved in our community, consider the Y! They rely on a multitude of volunteers for their programs, especially youth sports. Jason loves watching the community step up every time there's a need, like parents coaching their kids teams. I loved Jason's answer about the house he and his wife live in, and how it speaks to his current life chapter! You can reach out to Jason at the Cross Timbers YMCA, or donate online at ymcadallas.org. As he puts it, the mission statement of the Y is to be there for all, and he is here for all of the community of Flower Mound. Takeaways from this episode:  Jason Walter has been the executive director of the Cross Timbers YMCA since 2011 and he is excited to raise awareness about the many programs that enrich life in the community!  They offer youth sports, active older adult programs, cancer survivor support, drowning avoidance training, diabetes prevention programs and so much more.  Many of these programs are dependent on volunteers, which makes the Y a great place to get involved.  Cross Timbers YMCA also raises money for families to continue involvement at the Y even through financial hardship - 100% of the money stays local.  Resources mentioned in this episode:Learn more about The Cross Timbers' YMCA, and their available programs:https://www.ymcadallas.org/locations/cross_timbers/health_and_wellness/active_older_adultsJason's book recommendation, THE NCG FACTOR, by Larry Kaufman:https://www.kaufman-larry.com/To connect to Jason please email:jwalter@ymcadallas.orgTo get receive the framework to help you know yourself better, or to know someone deeper, email me:nicole@nicolesmith.netTo listen to previous episodes, and to submit your application as a guest, please visit:https://aroundflowermound.com/
