Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate and let's go change this world!  On today's episode, Jeff welcomes special guest Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations for Texas Values and Texas Values Action. In her role, Mary works with legislatures and their staff at the state capital to ensure pro-family values. Pro-family values represent the traditional value of what a family stands for by God's Word. This means providing a mother and father are in a home and doing everything possible to support traditional marriage, the upbringing of children, and parental rights.  Before joining Family Values, Mary worked under the general console at Midwestern State University, focusing on education policy. She also worked with First Liberty, researching and performing outreach for attorneys. This opportunity is what ultimately set the tone for her career path. She shares her appreciation for the First Liberty organization, which advocates for people to express their faith freely in professional and academic settings. After attending law school, Mary felt called to return to this field of work and was connected with Texas Values through the connections she made while working with First Liberty. Texas Values started in 2012, and Texas Values Action in 2014. Mary explains that Texas Values is a 501(c) that educates people and conducts research. Texas Values Action is a 501(c)(4) that endorses candidates and handles most of the organization's lobbying and action work. Then, Mary explains how and when the organization will begin to support candidates as we approach election season. Hear how Texas Values stood alongside a protest held by women athletes protesting the NCAA in San Antonio. Even though Mary knew that God was calling her down this path, she shared that she initially hesitated to take on the work because she didn't have prior legislative experience. However, she discovered that people within the legislation were welcoming and easy to talk to about subjects she had prior knowledge in. Reflecting on Texas Values' most recent successful session, Mary reveals that the work never stops when fighting new policies that harm our children and rob us of our liberties. There is still work to be done to protect children from things like inappropriate curriculum content, library books, and premature sex education. In closing, Mary shares what she hopes is in store for her future (including possibly running for office) and who in history she would most like to speak with. Learn more about Jeff Newkirk. Empowering and Equipping parents as they educate the next generation Teaching kids to stand up for their faith in school Identifying and understanding what is a religious freedom vs. a government imposed restriction What to do if your child's freedoms are compromised Landmark rulings that restrict your freedoms Where religious liberty ends and hate speech begins While this podcast targets parents and teachers and leaders, we typically try to keep our content kid-friendly, just in case your kids are listening along. For this episode, we feel the content is really important for parents and teachers and leaders, but our guest does mention some topics, without going into detail, that may be things you don't want to explain to younger kids just yet. So, please listen, but if you have younger kids, you may want to screen it before listening with them. Thank you, as always, for listening to The Bible for Kids podcast. Judge Roy Sparkman is a subject matter expert on religious freedoms. Serving Texans as a trial lawyer for more than two decades and a district judge for more than 8 years, Sparkman's passion for issues of religious liberties peaked when he represented his pastor in a deposition and subsequent court hearing where the pastor was questioned about his sermon condemning some children's books from a Biblical perspective. He is passionate about educating religious leaders about the ways in which their liberties are already being infringed upon, and equipping them to defend their positions and their faith. Sparkman holds a Juris Doctor from Baylor University School of Law and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Midwestern State University. He and his wife, Donna, reside in Waco, Texas, and enjoy spending time with their family and grandchildren.

The ALL ME® Podcast Bonus Episode: Can We Stop the Sale of Drugs On the Internet? –Dr. Tre Pennie Drugs are easily accessible into today's world.  In a world where phones and electronic devices are attached to our hands and eyes for many hours during the day, we need to be aware of what our young people are searching for and buying.  It doesn't take long for a young person to find anabolic steroids, HGH and other illicit substances for sale on Google, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.  You might be asking yourself how is this possible and why aren't these companies being held accountable for this.  Well we're going to spend some time in this podcast discussion the Communications Decency Act, specifically Section 230.  While this is a topic we've talked about in previous episodes, today we're going to be interviewing Dr. Tre Pennie. Pennie is a Texas native who grew up in inner city Houston.  During the time he was growing up it happened to be the height of “America's War on Drugs”.  At a young age he was exposed to violence and drug abuse, and even witnessed the fatal shooting of his cousin the day before she was set to get married.   Pennie loved to read and shortly after he graduated high school when he was 17 years old he enlisted in the US Army where he served for a number of years.  Following his military days, he was hired on by one of the top police departments in the U.S., the Dallas Police Department. While serving on the Department, Tre earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University and a Master's Degree in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University. At the time of the recording of this podcast Dr. Tre Pennie was running for the U.S. House in Texas Congressional District 30, so that if elected he could try and make some changed to stop the violence and the sale of drugs on the internet.   You will hear him discuss some of the steps that the government needs to take to try and update CDA Section 230 as well as some of the issues that will arise should it be removed.  Resource Links: Follow Us: Twitter:  @theTHF Instagram:  @theTHF Facebook: Taylor Hooton Foundation #ALLMEPEDFREE Contact Us:  Email:  Phone: 214-449-1990 ALL ME Assembly Programs:

Three hundred years ago, timber and turtles were key commodities for English settlers on Barbados and Jamaica. Barbadians sailed northwest to the island of St. Lucia where they harvested timber while Jamaicans headed to the Cayman Islands to take turtles in astounding numbers. Why did they seek these resources hundreds of miles away from their home islands? And what does it have to tell us about how settlers adapted to the environment in the early modern Caribbean? On today's episode, Dr. Mary Draper joins Jim Ambuske to flesh out how timber and turtles became central to Barbadian and Jamaican society in the colonial era. Draper is an Assistant Professor of History at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas and an expert on the environmental history of the colonial Caribbean. About Our Guest: Mary Draper is Assistant Professor of History at Midwestern State University. She is a scholar of colonial and revolutionary North America and the greater Atlantic world.  Particularly interested in the history of the seventeenth-and eighteenth century British Caribbean, she is working on a book that recovers how the region's urban residents--from colonial officials and merchants to turtlers and enslaved pilots--amassed environmental knowledge to develop, defend, and sustain their volatile coastlines.  An article based on the project was published in the Fall 2017 edition of Early American Studies.  In both her research and teaching, Draper highlights the interconnections that crisscrossed the empires, culture, and ecologies of early North America and the Atlantic world.  After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University, she earned both her Master of Arts degree and  doctorate from the University of Virginia. About Our Host: Jim Ambuske, Ph.D. leads the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. A historian of the American Revolution, Scotland, and the British Atlantic World, Ambuske graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016. He is a former Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia Law Library. At UVA Law, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project.  He is currently at work on a book about emigration from Scotland in the era of the American Revolution as well as a chapter on Scottish loyalism during the American Revolution for a volume to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press.
