Large-city fire departments with multiple PIOs have been showcasing their activities on social media for some time. If you have enough people, it's no problem. But what if you want to try to engage the community without those resources?Social media can be a direct link with the customers your department serves, so it's a no-brainer that you'd like to be all over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and all the others. Even podcasts. Not to mention that your message can be sent the way you want—not filtered through the editors and reporters of your local news providers. How do you do it?My two guests today come from the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority, or CAFMA. It's medium-small career department, covering several small cities and a lot of rural area, populated by about 106,000 residents. They do it with 10 full-time stations and 2 reserve stations. And NO full-time PIO. et CAFMA's social media program is impressive. And I'm saying this as someone who has seen the Los Angeles City Fire Department's social media program at work.My guests today are here to explain how they do it.We're talking with CAFMA Chief Scott Freitag, an old friend of Code 3, and Kathy Goodman, Scott's Community Relations Coordinator, who is the driving force behind this social media campaign.

DATCU is a local credit union here in Flower Mound, and if you're looking to step away from the big banks and into a world that focuses on supporting the local community - Mary Jacoby encourages you to become a member!Mary has been in banking for 33 years, and a DATCU employee for the past 12. Her favorite part of the job as Community Relations Coordinator is all the wonderful friendships she's made across Denton County. DATCU currently serves more than 100,000 members, and they have assets of more than a billion dollars. DATCU offers all the financial services its members need, from free checking and savings accounts to loans and financial planning. As a credit union, Mary wants everyone to know that they are dedicated to making the best choices not just for their employees, but also for their members. And that focus on the community goes far beyond banking. Mary explains that serving is part of the DNA at DATCU. Even at her interview, the DATCU CEO explained to Mary that joining a service organization is part of the expectations for her position, and she was more than happy to do so! She's volunteered countless hours with Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Communities in Schools of North Texas, served on the Board of the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation, and others.Although DATCU began as a teachers credit union back in 1936, these days anyone can join who lives, works, or worships in Denton County, or an adjacent county. Almost anywhere in the North Texas area qualifies! You can start the process of opening an account online, but will need to stop by a branch to complete the process and so they can meet you. Looking for a way to serve the Flower Mound Community yourself? As someone very involved in the volunteer scene, Mary has some suggestions. First, look for opportunities through your place of worship, the Rotary Club, or (for small businesses) the Chamber of Commerce. Aligning your skills and interests with your volunteer role helps you to be more purposeful about where you spend your time. Maybe you want to mentor in schools or help a food pantry? Just raise your hand and these organizations will be so happy for your help! Takeaways from this episode: DATCU Credit Union serves members across North Texas, and Mary Jacoby is the Community Relations Coordinator in Denton County. They offer a wide range of financial services and make choices that ensure the best outcome for their members. DATCU & Mary are committed to serving the community and encourage you to look for opportunities to serve aligns with your skills and interests. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Sports community relations jobs leverage the reach and power of the industry to make a positive influence in the local area. Sports jobs don't get much better than that!Listen in to this weeks episode with Kristina Wedseltoft, Indiana Pacers community relations coordinator to learn more about this exciting career.Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the work in sports podcast. There is a balance I strive for in booking guests on this show. I go for the big names… the Leigh Steinberg's, the Brian Killingsworth's, the Jennifer Keene's… these are the executives, the true thought leaders in the industry who have lived it all, hired hundreds of people and set that stage for what the sports industry is.But I also like to bring on guests new or newer to the industry.Dasmine Evans, Kelsey Smith, Evan Feinstein, Betsy Lauritzen… because there is a relatability to their story. They are you. People recently in the industry or fighting to get in. They are also the people setting the stage for what the industry will be. And they just recently got hired… so they have an experience to share!Their challenges, pitfalls and successes may be exactly what you are dealing with right now, and that is so important. Here's the amazing part.I never know how a guest will connect with all of you… I guess and speculate but never really know how much you will connect with the subject. It turns out you are just as interested in Kelsey Smith as you are Leigh Steinberg… so while I'll always strive for Theo Epstein, I'm kind of proud that you all learn and engage just as much with your near peers.Today's guest Kristina Wedseltoft has been in the industry for a few years now, in the midst of her second season with the Indiana Pacers as part of their community relations team. She worked previously with the San Diego Padres in Fan Engagement and with the Indianapolis Indians in Community relations. She's a real up and comer in the industry, and there is a lot to learn during this interview… we actually taped this conversation on Pacers opening night, a crazy night that Kristina was so kind to carve out some time to chat with all of us. Here's Kristina Wedseltoft!Questions for Indiana Pacers Community Relations Coordinator, Kristina Wedseltoft:1: I love the various origination stories I learn from people on this show and I think you have a pretty interesting story too – you graduated college with a degree in communication from UC-San Diego but started out in the fashion industry working in PR for Viktor Luna designs … and I am totally comfortable admitting I remember Viktor from Project Runway. Anyway, how did you get from that start…to working in sports?2: After the fashion move, and then joining the San Diego Padres as a Fan Experience representative – you decided to go back and get your Masters. Was this out of frustration with your career growth, like, I need something to kick start this process… or was getting your Masters your strategy all along?3: So how did getting your Masters change things for you? Did it help you gain career focus and zero in on community relations as your career path?4: September 2017 you get hired by the Indiana Pacers as a Community Relations Coordinator – take us through the interview process… I'm sure it was a very competitive role, what kind of things were expected of you, what were some of the challenging things you were asked?5: Why community relations?6: Let's talk about your specific role as the Community Relations Coordinator for the Pacers what does your day-to-day look like and what are your major responsibilities? Do you have favorite parts of the job?7: The Pacers community relations team focuses on education, service and health – how does your team impact the local community in those realms and how rewarding are the experiences?8: What are some of the biggest challenges you encounter putting on a great community event that you can be proud of?

We all have a voice. We all should use our voice. We all want to connect with each other, and many feel a sense of responsibility with those connections. What if your voice is amplified because you are a member of a popular professional sports team? What responsibilities do you have to yourself, to your employer, and to your community when you become famous because of the platform your employer gave you?Not too long ago, before the rise of digital social media platforms, the opinions of a professional athlete was not a focal point in the perspectives of a society. The perspectives of a professional sports team, for the most part, stayed on sports.Today, everyone’s platform is elevated. We all have a “channel” via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Now, think of an Millennial athlete just drafted into the NFL, NBA or any high profile professional sport. Those Millennial athletes have the same profiles as most of us do, yet their existing platform has now elevated significantly.I spoke with Keenan Harrell, Community Relations Coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, to explore the impact of today’s societal expectations on a pro athlete today, and how an organization manages a multi-generational workforce, particularly one as high-profile as an NFL team.Let’s explore what we can learn from those perspectives as we develop our own platforms and our own voice, and let’s also explore the talents of Connectedness and Responsibility in our journey to become more effective stewards of our public platforms.

According to the United States Geological Survey, 71 of the Earth s surface is water. And 96 of that in other words, almost all of it is ocean. Seeing most of the planet is ocean, you might wonder why it s called "Earth" at all. In theory, it should really be called "Water." And seeing there are billions more fish than there are humans, you would think we relatively few humans would be dominated by fish. Whether you explain the fact that we eat fish rather than them eating us as evolution, God s design, or we re part of an alien experiment fish are a vital part of the diet of humans almost everywhere. In our part of the world, seafood is elevated to somewhere between religion and a way of life. And it s a vital part of our economy. No place more so than Delcambre. Although Delcambre only has 2,000 residents, on the day in 2013 when the Port of Delcambre launched the Seafood and Farmer s Market, 1,000 of them showed up. Today, the monthly market is a staple of the area. People come from as far away as Arkansas, lured mainly by the chance to get their hands on highly prized Vermilion Bay shrimp. The Assistant Manager of the Delcambre Seafood and Farmer s Market, and the Community Relations Coordinator for the Port of Delcambre, is Tammy Gordon. Tammy describes show she and her crew started up an online system where you can find out what fish are coming in to the port and go get em fresh on Delcanbre Direct. As you know, there are a lot of ways to prepare seafood. Fried. Grilled. Saut ed. And cooked up in a gumbo to name a few. It s only relatively recently though, that here in Acadiana we ve been able to eat fish that don t require any of these methods of cooking. Meaning, sushi In 2002 Michele Ezell opened Lafayette s first sushi restaurant Tsunami for no better reason than she loved sushi. And she was tired of driving to Baton Rouge or even New Orleans to get it. Since opening Tsunami in Lafayette, Michele has opened another Tsunami in Baton Rouge, and more recently a third one in New Orleans. Photos in the courtayrd of Cafe Vermilionville by Gwen Aucoin. Joining me on this week’s episode is Matt Quinn, Community Relations Coordinator at Rosecrance, a substance abuse treatment center with locations throughout Illinois. Matt’s here to help me touch on a number of areas we haven’t really had an opportunity to discuss on the podcast just yet, mainly as it relates to marijuana and alcohol usage in teenagers. Topics we discuss include: — Substance abuse trends that have surprised him. What drugs has he seen decreases and increases in? — His biggest concern about teens and young adults using marijuana — Marijuana usage as it related to brain development in teens — Can marijuana be a long-term healing solution overcome anxiety, or does it only have short-term benefits? — Is Connection the opposite of Addiction? An interesting theory you’ll want to tune into…
