Peace of mind is a hot commodity. I'm betting you would agree. So many circumstances (and even some people we know) can steal our peace! The Apostle Paul talks about “peace that passes understanding.” What is that, and how do we access it? Peace that passes understanding is NOT…Easily obtained…it requires a willingness to study, to confess, to be humbled, to let go of control, and to believe.A vending machine of blessing…I put in so many prayers and out pops my solution!“Worldly peace” that comes from healing on the world's terms or winning on the world's terms or seeing those who threaten our peace punished.Peace that passes understanding IS…Only found in one place, that is a relationship with God that is deep and trusting. A lifelong pursuit to know God more.Trusting that God is at work. He is never a passive bystander.A result of being broken and humbled by our situation so that we are prompted to look for God.Counter cultural, no, it's “other worldly.”The foundation for all hope in our lives, no matter what peace stealers threaten us.So, today, here's your gentle reminder that the God of the universe is at work in your life, even as you feel peace stealers all around.Yes, he wants our prayers and our gratitude, AND he desperately wants a relationship with us. Think of this imagery. He's got you by the hand, and he is walking it out with you. That's the imagery in Josh Wilson's song, The Things That I'm Afraid Of, from 2022. This song is a powerful reminder of God'sintention to walk through life hand-in-hand with us.Until next time, may the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your heart and mind focused on knowing and trusting God is at work in your mess!Have a blessed Easter! Episode 39 - When Change is Hard

I know a number of caregivers or spouses who are going through some really hard changes right now. Maybe that's you; maybe it's someone you love. You're exhausted, sad, angry, or just numb. You're coming to terms with a new diagnosis, a deteriorating condition, hard changes in a relationship, a difficult move or adjusting to the loss of someone central in your life, someone you love very much. I'm amazed by the number of friends I have who are caring for parents whose lives have changed in hard ways. What does God's word say about the idea of change in the lives of his people? It didn't take me five minutes to come up with a list of 100 verses about a heavenly perspective on change. God has a lot to say about it. In invite you to think on these things.God is unchanging. Let him be your anchor.Malachi 3:6 – “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”Following Christ involves a continual process of change, where we grow in holiness and leave behind our old ways.Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”Life is full of transitions, but God is sovereign over them all.Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” When facing change, we're called to trust in God's guidance rather than their own understanding.Isaiah 43:19 – “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Even when change feels overwhelming, God is faithful to complete the work He has begun in us.Philippians 1:6 – “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” According to the Bible, change is inevitable, but we are assured that God is in control and that His purposes will be fulfilled.Today I'm encouraging you to believe God is with you and he goes ahead of you wherever life is changing…in the positive changes and in the hard changes. Especially when change is hard, lean into the people and the places that will remind you of this. Guard what goes in your ears and your eyes. All of that affects your spirit and your outlook. Look for his hand. Trust his provision and his good plans for you. That's a focus on gratitude. Sending you love and light today. I hope you can feel it, and I hope you share it, even as seasons change, as sunlight comes and goes, and you reflect on the blessings in your mess.Resources:My website: www.lorischlosser.comMy Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lorischlosserspeaksMy Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/lorischlosserspeaks/Blessed in This Mess can be accessed on all major streaming platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.

Even before I was married, I inherited a china cabinet that held special table settings from both of my grandmothers. As a new bride I added the china my husband and I selected to that cabinet. Over time, and with a lot more life in the rearview mirror, my philosophy about using our family china has certainly changed. In this episode I explain why I use our china every chance I get, and I encourage you to consider doing the same. Time passes so quickly. The faces around our tables change, as do the opportunities to honor and nurture the relationships that mean the most to us. May the moments you share around your table be a blessing, no matter what dishes you choose to use, even as the seasons of life roll on. It's January, the perfect month to pivot the podcast in a slightly different direction. I'm excited to share this first episode of 2025, when I'm expanding my focus to offer encouragement and support across the board...to family caregivers AND anyone who could use gentle reminders about self-care, faith formation and maintaining a posture of gratitude, especially when life is messy. What's been your approach to a new year? Do you make New Year's resolutions? Researchers say most resolutions don't last four months. Consider this idea. What if we use the entire month of January to do these 3 things? The first is to practice solitude. The second is to spend a little extra time in prayer, Bible study, and reflection. Third is a specific reflective exercise offered by one of my favorite authors, Emily P. Freeman. She suggests January is an excellent time to reflect on something we want, something we need, and something we hope for in the New Year. I share an example to get your wheels turning on this suggestion. I used to loathe the cold, gray days of winter after the holidays. Now I see the wisdom and purpose in God's gift of January. This episode focuses there. Blessings on your January! New year, fresh vision, new focus for the Blessed in This Mess podcast, "Encouragement for Every Season." I'd like my digital footprint to reflect the positivity and light I carry with me, on my best days, yes, but especially when life is messy. Can you relate to a messy life? When the check engine light comes on and you smell oil. When an adult child accepts a fabulous new job...800 miles from home. When a little one's development is marked by unexpected changes or challenges. When you're cleaning out the house that holds so many memories, preparing for your next chapter. My goal is one post each week on the socials and one 7-12 minute podcast episode a month, with content that supports your faith journey, whole body wellness, and a focus on gratitude. Let's do this together. Grab that basket of laundry or your morning coffee. Put the car in drive or put your earbuds in for a walk, and join me! Let's do this! This is the year in review, with a look at my top three lessons learned as I focused on “strengthening relationships in person” in 2023. It has been a wonderful year, filled with unexpected blessings as I connected with other caregivers and translated my experiences into podcast episodes. Lesson #1: There is no substitute for being fully present with each other, face to face, heart to heart. Check out Episode 31, “The Gift of Time” for more on this topic. Lesson #2: Self-care is the single most elusive piece of family caregiving. We all need daily reminders, fresh ideas, and inspiration to get this done. Self-care topics are sprinkled throughout episodes from 2022 and 2023. Lesson #3: Gratitude may be the most powerful weapon in our arsenal against anxiety, fear, depression, and pessimism. Check out Episodes 9, 32, and 33 for more on this topic. In 2023 these practices, being fully present with others, self-care, and daily gratitude have been so life-giving for me and for the caregivers in my world. Please consider “gifting” yourself in each of these areas in the new year. After much thought and prayer, I'm pivoting again in 2024. My website, lorischlosser.com, has been updated and will remain a point of contact for speaking engagements and for listening to all the content I've recorded over the last couple of years. In 2024 you can still reach me via Facebook at Lori Schlosser or on Instagram at lorischlosserspeaks, but I'm unplugging the boom microphone on my desk for the time being as I step in faith into the promise of 2024. I'm so grateful for your support of this ministry and for the way you share it with others. Thank you for encouraging me along the way with your notes and messages. They have meant the world to me. Behind every successful podcaster is a devoted crew. Mine includes my husband and our sons (my "editorial board") who have believed in this ministry even when my energy wavered. Special thanks to our son, Noah, who created my digital footprint in so many places, taught me how to use recording software, and professionally engineered every episode. I can't tell you how much his support has meant to the quality of the finished product.     In 2024, as always, you will remain on my heart and in my prayers. May God richly bless you with strength, patience, wisdom, and peace in the year ahead. If you need me, you know where to find me. Thanks for listening! Happy New Year! I'm flipping the script this Thanksgiving week, with this special prayer for family caregivers. Mara Botonis was a caregiver by profession until her work became personal when her grandfather, who had raised her, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Mara penned this prayer, which is really an exercise in unspoken gratitude, in her book, When Caring Takes Courage. I believe the sentiments shared in her writing apply to family caregivers in all circumstances, whether your care receiver is a parent or grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a spouse, a sibling, or a child. These sentiments may be shared often between you, or you may seldom hear these words spoken. I hope you find them life-giving. May the Giver of all good gifts grant you the strength, the patience, the courage, and the wisdom to meet each challenge, wherever you are in your caregiving journey. And may your spirit be renewed as you reflect on all the goodness in your life this Thanksgiving. November provides an opportunity for us to pause, share our experiences, and be strengthened in our journeys, as it is BOTH National Family Caregivers Month AND Diabetes Awareness Month. So many of us just do what we do day to day, seldom advocating in a public way, seldom sharing our struggles, sometimes too weary to answer another question or educate even interested family members or friends about our journeys or our need for support. Today, as we begin November, a few reminders: 1.    You have permission to be honest… to share your experiences transparently, unashamed. 2.    You have permission to be sad… to remember, to cry, and to grieve. 3.    You have permission to connect…. to rally with your people and to share each other's burdens. There is blessing in both sharing and listening to someone who trusts you to understand. No matter where you are in your journey, your experience could help someone else. 4.    You have permission to take a breath…. to practice self-care like it's your job. :) I'll give you some ideas! 5.    You have permission to let it go… to remember you are, ultimately, not in control. You are doing the best you can. I encourage you to hand it all over to God, because He reminds us, time and again, that on the heavenly calendar it is ALWAYS your month, and He's right there with you in your struggle to care for a loved one and/or to manage blood sugar. We are reminded in Matthew 28:11 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Rest is a wonderful thing, in November and always! Has family caregiving changed you? Your personality? Your outlook? The way you view yourself or others? I recently asked this question to a room full of family caregivers, and the response was overwhelmingly affirmative. Caregiving for someone with a chronic illness, extended sickness, or disability is life-changing, and not necessarily in a good way. I suggest we have a choice around the way in which we are changed. The daily challenges of caregiving may make us more pessimistic, anxious, or angry. Or, they may gradually transform us into someone who is more optimistic, flexible, and confident. I believe we have a choice, and the daily practice of gratitude is more powerful than previously understood. Join me as I pick up where I left off in Episode 32 and introduce the concept of neuroplasticity. That's a big word that captures our brain's God-giving capacity to change. Neuroplasticity gives us hope around the potential for positive changes in brain structure and response, even in the face of tough days (or weeks or years) as a family caregiver. I touch on the work of Dr. Andrew Huberman (Huberman Lab Podcast), a neuroscientist who has researched the connection between a daily practice of gratitude and a wide range of positive changes in the brain. I encourage you to a SHARED daily practice of gratitude, which may include your care receiver. It's a win-win! Consistency is key. What have you got to lose? A focus on gratitude has become one of the most powerful tools in my caregiver toolbox. I have found it to be a gamechanger, especially when days are long and exhausting, or one challenging day as a family caregiver runs seamlessly into another. Did you know there is science to a posture of gratitude around changes in body chemistry and neuropathways? Our bodies release chemicals when we practice gratitude that build positive neuropathways. The more positive neuropathways, the better we feel. Did you know you can't be anxious and grateful at the same time? A focus on gratitude amplifies the good in our days, rescues us from toxic feelings, and strengthens our relationships with others. A grateful posture helps us sleep better, supports our immune system, increases our interest in eating right and exercise, affects our interest in healthier behaviors, and decreases our perceived aches and pains. I invite you to listen to the podcast, take the Gratitude Challenge, and reap the benefits of a daily focus on gratitude. I also invite you to join me at the AgeLinc Caregiver Conference, Saturday, September 16, at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. Reservation deadline is September 4. Last month I lost a special person whose positive influence on my formative years as a young professional is undeniable. This episode takes me back to the 1980s (VHS movies, big hair and big shoulder pads) for a reflection on the passage of time, often a precarious subject for family caregivers. We may dread the hours we spend caring for someone we know is not going to get better. We may wish we could slow time as we teach a child to manage a health condition more independently as she grows and eventually leaves home. When we're caring for someone who will outlive us and will continue to need extra support, but we don't know who will step up or how that will happen, we may fear the passage of time. When caregiving means missing family events, lunches with friends, or holiday gatherings, time can feel wasted. This episode invites us to repackage our negative impressions about the passage of time spent as a family caregiver. What if we approached each day, no matter how challenging, like a precious gift? Two years ago, I was really struggling with sleep while caregiving for my mom, who was in her final weeks of life after several strokes and years of vascular dementia. Falling asleep was one thing. Waking at 3 a.m. and not being able to fall back to sleep was a whole other issue. The thoughts would swirl and build momentum, as I became more conscious, increasingly fretful, and fully awake in the early morning hours. I was a veteran of the Sleep Wars, having raised a child with blood sugar that danced around all night, in the days before insulin pump alarms and continuous glucose monitors. There was a lot of interrupted sleep to test blood sugar and to ensure he would be safe through the night. But the sleeplessness I experienced around Mama's struggles was filled with so much anxiety and sadness. How is your sleep? Do you get the recommended 7-9 hours? I imagine you may not. Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep says 60 million Americans suffer from poor sleep quality. Today's Caregiver says 72 percent of caregivers report problems sleeping. Is that you or someone you love? Today I'm sharing a couple resources I hope you'll find helpful for quality sleep, along with my experience around strategies for falling to sleep more peacefully and returning to sleep if you wake in the night. I also share some biblical perspective on sleep, along with encouragement to seek additional support if all else fails. Quality sleep is so important for all of us. The more I connect with family caregivers, the more I see the real need for frequent reminders about self-care. It's SO EASY to neglect our own wellness when our days and nights are busy with the challenges of caregiving. Today's podcast is a story about chicken soup, but it's also encouragement to approach self-care from a direction advocated by one of my favorite writers, Emily P. Freeman, author of The Next Right Thing, which is also the name of her podcast (link below). Emily is a huge believer in assessing our lives as each season of the year comes to a close and another begins. So, here we are, just as rainy spring gives way to the sunshine of summer. Seems an appropriate time to ask two of Emily's favorite reflection questions. "What has been life-giving for me in this season, and what has been life-draining for me in this season?" The goal going forward is to spend more time doing the things that soothe or energize, and less time doing the things that frustrate or exhaust. I invite you to think on these questions as you approach self-care each day. Do the things, even if they're seemingly small, that bring you life! Today I made chicken soup, and I shared it. And, guess what? It was life-giving self-care! Here's to our days in the sun, spending time with the life-giving things that heal our hearts and nourish our souls...so important for our short-term wellness and our long-term health. This episode features the story of Sue ("Mama Sue") Garrett, an unlikely social media sensation and the grandmotherly face of Mama Sue's Southern Kitchen. I stumbled upon her Facebook videos in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. That year, at the urging of her daughter, she began recording herself cooking simple family recipes in her kitchen. Her intent was to help young moms who were, be necessity, preparing more meals at home. I was quickly enamored with Mama Sue and her southern cooking, and apparently I was not alone. What's not to love about a sweet Alabama drawl, a wide smile, a positive attitude, and a simple recipe for something yummy? Much to her amazement, Mama Sue attracted thousands of followers who eventually persuaded her to publish a cookbook. Then, in 2021, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her unlikely cooking ministry became an even more powerful testimony. Her followers grew exponentially, as did her ministry. Her third cookbook is nearing publication. Mama Sue is all about serving up encouragement with every recipe. She gently reminds her followers to "be salt and light," even as they navigate the hardest days. Recently Mama Sue shared a recipe for key lime pie that I'm planning to try. As I shared in Episode 25, my personal focus in 2023 is on strengthening relationships, in person, face to face. I wasn't really sure how many podcast episodes I would produce this year. God has had the lead on this venture all along. That continues. While I relish the creative process, and I love interviewing guests, my 2022 production/promotion schedule was so time-consuming. This extrovert missed being with other people, and I felt called to "get back out there" in meaningful ways. The first two months of 2023 have been filled with reconnection of all sorts. So good for the soul! In this episode I share a reflection on the connections I've made in the last two months, a powerful story about the beauty of face-to-face interaction, and words of encouragement for even the weariest caregiver. There is nothing in the world like genuine, face-to-face, heart-to-heart connection. Even the briefest encounter can be so life-giving. 2022 was an unbelievable year for the Blessed in This Mess podcast. Thank you for supporting my work in so many ways! In this episode I pay tribute to the year that was and share my plans for 2023, where my focus will be on strengthening relationships in person, rather than creating new podcast episodes and promoting them on social media. In the new year, my website and the archive of Blessed in This Mess episodes will continue to be available on all major streaming platforms. Therein lies the beauty of podcasting, a lasting auditory footprint. Please continue sharing episodes with friends and family who might need some encouragement in the mess of their caregiving journeys. And, yes, you may listen to them as many times as you'd like. I will continue to respond to messages on my website, on Facebook and on Instagram. I'll leave you with this final thought as I close this chapter and we look to the promise of 2023. Regret leaves us in the darkness of the past, and fear and worry project darkness into our future. None of that darkness is from God. Let's live in the light of the present, grateful for our blessings, big and small, and reliant on the God who gives us purpose each day, even in the messiest days of family caregiving. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support of this ministry that started as a call on my heart and grew in unbelievable ways to reach more people than I imagined possible. You are, and will continue to be, on my heart and in my prayers. If you need me, you know where to find me! I hope to see you soon! L. I see you in the grocery store or out in the community. You're caring for a loved one whose health is complicated or deteriorating, maybe an elderly parent or medically-complex spouse or adult child, and you're exhausted. The daily grind is wearing on you. You need help, but you're not sure where to turn. My guest for this episode knows the landscape well. Rod Lane is the Owner and Executive Director of Visiting Angels in Springfield, Illinois. He shares his passion for home services, as well as helpful perspective about the support offered by Visiting Angels' caregivers. I ask Rod the questions you most want answered. What is the difference between home services, home health care and home hospice care? What supports do home services caregivers provide? How are needs assessed? What if my loved one isn't open to support from professional caregivers? How much do home services cost, and what resources might help with those expenses? How do I access services designed specifically to support U.S. military veterans? Where do I look online for home services care options? Rod also shares his thoughts on self-care for family caregivers, and a word of encouragement about mindset. I'm thrilled to share this conversation and resource information about Visiting Angels. Wife and mom of three and a licensed physical therapist, she completely reconfigured her work focus when her daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2020. By January of 2021 Katie was cranking out episodes of The Sugar Mama's Podcast, designed to support moms and other caregivers raising kids with T1D. She started with topics most relevant to newly diagnosed families, creating not only insightful podcast content, but also an entertaining presence on social media and an engaged Facebook community. Listen to my conversation with Katie about what motivates her and what she's learned from interviews with some of the nation's leading experts in the Type 1 world. In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, today's episode features psychotherapist JoAnne Robb, MFT, from Oakland, CA, mother of two children living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Her passion is working with families affected by the disease to support emotional wellness and healthy relationships. JoAnne offers fresh perspective and practical answers to the behavioral questions that cause the greatest problems for parents raising kids with Type 1. She is wise and kind, and her transparency is so refreshing. JoAnne's online coaching courses and free webinars are powerful resources for newly diagnosed families, as well as parents who know the ropes but would like additional help as their children living with T1D grow into adulthood. JoAnne has a new podcast called Sweet Talk where she invites parents to ask her the pressing questions that keep them awake at night around T1D, emotions, and relationships. I love her work, because I believe it meets a real need nationwide for support with the feelings (grief, anxiety, fear, anger, resentment, denial) that often sabotage wellness for T1D caregivers and for the people they love. I've learned that some of the most authentic dialogue in podcasting happens when the official recording has ended, and host and guest, connected by some common human experience, share their hearts with each other. That happened to me again last week. I was guest to a young mom who has quickly become an online influencer in the Type 1 diabetes world. She hosts a popular podcast for fellow T1D moms designed to support them as they care for children living with the disease. My work caught her eye because of my focus on self-care…but that's not what we talked about after we stopped recording for her podcast. No, that's when the super transparent sharing happened, and I was talking to this mama about the stuff that can seem forbidden to talk about in our world today…God's presence in the mess. Does faith in God really make a difference to moms raising kids with chronic conditions? Does it matter to adult daughters and sons supporting elderly parents as bodies fail and they finish their earthly journeys? Does faith in God make any difference at all to a husband sitting bedside as his wife recovers from chemo or open-heart surgery? I know it's taboo in some forums, but let's talk about faith in the mess of family caregiving. Hang with me for just a few minutes as I share what I've learned over the last 16 years. If you are a person who's wondered what difference it would make to trust God is present your mess, I've been where you are. Does faith in God REALLY make a difference? Even with all the perspective I've shared on the podcast, sometimes I feel like I don't talk enough about this fundamental question. This may be fresh perspective or a simple reminder for you. Either way, I've got some stories of remarkable caregivers that are worth sharing. I invite you to listen in. Are you just plain tired as we move into fall? That's the vibe I'm getting from listener feedback, and I'm right there with you! Today's episode is short and sweet. It's a reflection on rest in the broader sense…physical, emotional, spiritual. I'm offering a few thoughts about the kind of rest that refreshes and renews…so important for all of us. I've even got a great new TobyMac release to share, called (believe it or not) "Rest." Takeaways: My acronym for REST. RENEW YOUR SPIRIT with prayer, meditation, calming reading or music. Try TobyMac's latest release, “Rest” from his Life After Death album. EXERCISE YOUR BODY by moving it (walking, stretching) even for 10 min at a time - for a break, to decrease anxiety/depression, and get those endorphins (creating a positive feeling) flowing. Exercise helps us rest! SLEEP, with a goal of 7 hours, allowing for REM sleep. The brain is busy during sleep, as it sorts and stores info from your day, cells repair, immunity is strengthened, the sympathetic nervous system relaxes keeping BP down, and cortisol (stress hormone) levels decrease. Develop a sleep routine that calms you and make it a priority. TEND SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS, determining who will listen to understand, not always to respond. Is this a family member, friend, therapist, pastor? Along with our son, Noah, I shared three salient points about taking advantage of the resources provided by your medical team, cultivating in-person support, and finding trustworthy resources online. I summarize those ideas in this episode. I also offer reflections about a few of the incredible people I met at the event and the inspirational stories they shared with me. Ashley Coker is my guest for this episode. Like me, Ashley is a mom in the Type 1 diabetes world. Ashley's son was diagnosed in November 2020, at the height of the pandemic. She is sharing valuable perspective about responding to an unexpected diagnosis, taking on the role of family caregiver, and finding resources, in person and online, to support her in her new role. I asked Ashley to be a guest as I prepare for a talk to Type 1 families at a JDRF community event in Peoria, Illinois, on August 6. So much of the wisdom she shares is transferable to caregivers around many conditions. If you're caring for someone newly diagnosed with Type 1 or any other condition…or you just want fresh perspective about building your support network as a family caregiver, I invite you to listen in. Resources: Facebook page for the Central IL Type 1 Support Group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/805603376131046 For information about the JDRF Community Rally in Peoria, IL, on August 6, contact Jennifer McDonald, jemcdonald@jdrf.org, or call 309-229-0558 Learn more about hiring a diabetes educator from the organization Ashley uses, Integrated Diabetes Services, https://integrateddiabetes.com/ Takeaways: A new diagnosis is overwhelming, because it thrusts a family caregiver into a new world of terminology and activity. The principles around building a support network as a family caregiver are similar, no matter the condition(s) you are helping to manage. Important parts of your support network include your loved one's clinical team, as well as in-person and online support from others who have experience with the practical side of managing the condition(s) you are also managing. A notebook where you can document information shared at medical appointments, calls to insurance, tips around daily care, suggested resources you'd like to review, etc., may be a helpful tool. Expect to assume many roles (e.g., nurse, tech support, insurance specialist, financial planner, school advocate) as a family caregiver. It may be helpful for one person in a family to be designated the point person for coordinating care, even if other family members are also helping. Determine what other family members and friends are best suited to help with. Not everyone is suited for direct care, but they may still assist you in valuable ways. Consider educating your work group to support you in specific ways (e.g., covering your calls if you need to address an emergency) as a family caregiver. Let's Connect! A year ago, on July 19, 2021, Mama transitioned from this life to the next. She was nearly 90 years old and had lived an incredible life. This episode pays tribute to her journey, which included more than 20 years as a family caregiver and more than six years as a care receiver. I've included three important lessons she lived through her example, and they were so wise! In full transparency, I've also included things I believe she might have done differently, if she was able to view her 89 years in totality. (Those last six were so challenging.) I finish this episode with one of the greatest Bible passages about love. I hope this episode encourages, inspires, and blesses you today! Resources: Today's Bible touchpoint, from 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2013&version=NIV Takeaways: The wisdom of Mama's 89 years includes three valuable lessons. #1 Do start your day with quiet time. This may include meditation, quiet time with a calming book, exercise, yoga, devotional time. Even five minutes can set your day in a peaceful way! Don't go into your headspace alone. Ask Jesus to be present. Intercessory prayer can be life-giving, because it allows us to hand our issues over to God. When words fail…or when you want something different…listening to faith-based music can also bring peace to your mornings. #2 Do your best to plan. Leave the rest to God. This applies to all major life transitions as well as finishing your earthly journey well. As an act of love and caring, outline your wishes for your family in a will, trust, or estate document, and share it in a timely fashion (when you are healthy and able to easily communicate). Before you have real health challenges, share relevant medical information, a living will in the event of a catastrophic health event, and your wishes around end-of-life arrangements. #3 Do get out of your own head. Help somebody else. Don't ask people to let you know if they need anything. Just share something. Serving in this way can be very simple..a greeting card with a personal note, a phone call to encourage, the gift of listening without judgement. If Mama could see her journey in totality, I believe she would have paid more attention to her self-care, journeyed through grief in a healthier way, and more seriously considered finishing well in her own home. 1Corinthians 13:1-13 is balm for the soul.

The statistics around the sheer number of family caregivers and the negative health outcomes often associated with this role have surprised most of my audiences. Family caregivers benefit from easily accessible, reputable resources, like the Caregiver Action Network. Contrary to what some may believe, men care about family caregiving, either because they are caregivers themselves (40 percent), or because their loves ones are serving in this role. Listening to understand, not necessarily to respond, may be the greatest gift a family caregiver can receive. This is a rewind of Episode 8, “Finding Peace After Caregiving Ends,” strategically shared in the week before Father's Day. Today I'm speaking to the hearts of listeners who have lost fathers, husbands, grandfathers, uncles, or someone special who's been like a father. This is a deeper dive into a more emotional subject that is messy to think about and messier still to put into words. “What do I do now that my caregiving days are over?” “How do I heal from the absence of someone whose life has been so intimately interwoven with mine?” There are volumes written on grief and recovery from loss. Full disclaimer, I am not a therapist. These are my observations about the grief process and tools that may help in healing, based upon all that I've learned. I offer three simple takeaways from three credible sources that have been useful for me and many others who are traveling this path to healing and wholeness after caregiving ends. Resources: The Journeying Through Grief booklets by Dr. Kenneth Haugk, https://www.stephenministries.org/griefresources/default.cfm/774 The Voices of Grief DVD, available to be streamed or purchased, https://voicesofgrief.org/ The website for Emily P. Dr. Kenneth Haugk is the author of a series of booklets called Journeying Through Grief that are designed to be read at particular times in the first year after loss. My takeaway from these booklets is “find your healing people.” Each person's journey through grief is unique. There is no timetable for grief. Voices of Grief: Honoring the Sacred Journey is an award-winning documentary filled with helpful information from contemporary authors, poets, and grief experts. My takeaway from this resource is, “You will be whole again, but you will never be the same.” This is not necessarily a bad thing. Author Emily P. Freeman hosts a podcast and has written a book, both titled The Next Right Thing. Her work focuses on helping people in any life circumstance discern next steps, especially when decision making is difficult. My takeaway from Emily's work is “Be open to being the wink of God for someone else.” Our Bible touchpoint from Ecclesiastes 3:11 is a reminder that we are on God's time, and that He continues to work in our lives, even when some of the things we experience cannot be explained. After scanning my website and listening to a few episodes of this podcast, Margaret wanted me to be sure include some dialogue about the upsides of being a family caregiver. To focus on the positives, despite and in the face of the grind…the day-in-and-day-out vigilance, the interrupted sleep, the appointments, the worry, the stress, the mess. Challenge accepted! We are become MORE of the good stuff in many ways. I offer five. We are more deeply connected to friends who “get it.” We are more accepting and flexible around accommodating others who have needs, even those different than ours. We are more empathetic, better listeners, better encouragers. We can be more influential, offering education and advocacy in schools, with medical systems and insurance companies, and in the halls of government. We are more resilient, because we're accustomed to finding joy in hard places and figuring out how best to cope with strain over time. It is an act of extravagant love to persevere as a family caregiver. But that perseverance is shaping us into better human beings. Episode 9 - Simply Gratitude

This episode focuses on an element of emotional health I believe is a game changer, practicing gratitude, even when caregiving is messy. I share a story about a pair of inexpensive sunglasses that remind me of famous actress, Elizabeth Taylor. She was often photographed wearing large, round, dark lenses with black frames. I inherited a similar pair after my mom passed, and the lenses make the world look so beautiful! The lens through which we see the world makes a difference, doesn't it? My focus today is on adopting a lens of gratitude, defining that lens, and offering a few simple suggestions around using it. Given the challenges of family caregiving, there's no shame in needing an occasional reminder around being grateful, because the benefits of this perspective are huge. Resources: Today's Bible touchpoint, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+5%3A16-18&version=NIV Takeaways: A lens of gratitude is a conscious choice that takes practice and periodic reminders. This lens is an antidote to the darkest parts of caregiving, because it promotes a change in perspective, from what is wrong in our lives to what is right. This lens is also a powerful tool to share with the loved ones in our care as well as others we connect with each day. Start with the Rule of 3: Find 3 things you are grateful for each morning or evening. Some use gratitude journals for this exercise, but they are not necessary, unless you prefer to write them down. Tiny can be mighty. Your items don't have to be monumental, just meaningful. They could be as basic as, “I'm grateful for the end of another week.” If you're stuck, consider 3 things you were able to accomplish today. This can also be very basic, like “I was able to take a shower and wash my hair between tasks.” Or “I was able to take a 10-minute walk.” Simply gratitude, each day. This is your reminder about the power of this lens.

This episode is strategically timed to run prior to Mother's Day and Father's Day 2022, after so many of us have lost loved ones in the pandemic years. Several listeners have asked me to address this topic, because they are struggling with it. Freeman's podcast and book, The Next Right Thing, https://emilypfreeman.com/ Today's Bible touchpoint, from Ecclesiastes, 3:11, https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes+3%3A11&version=NIV Takeaways: Losing a loved one has been particularly difficult during these pandemic years, causing additional caregiver trauma. Dr. Kenneth Haugk is the author of a series of booklets called Journeying Through Grief that are designed to be read at particular times in the first year after loss. My takeaway from these booklets is “find your healing people.” Each person's journey through grief is unique. There is no timetable for grief. Voices of Grief: Honoring the Sacred Journey is an award-winning documentary filled with helpful information from contemporary authors, poets and grief experts. My takeaway from this resource is “You will be whole again, but you will never be the same.” This is not necessarily a bad thing. Episode 7 - Celebrations in Your Caregiving Life, with Noah Schlosser

My guest in this episode is Noah Schlosser, my adult son, who's lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was a little guy. Noah believes that finding reasons to celebrate things big and small makes you a more positive person, even if parts of your life bring daily challenges. Frankly, as his caregiver, a celebration mindset, whenever possible, has been a Godsend for me, too, both as I've supported Noah and as I cared for my mom in her final years. This episode is lovingly dedicated to our friends in the Type 1 community, but the principles we cover apply across the board to family caregivers and care receivers everywhere. Resources: Find Noah's work on the web, https://www.noahschlosser.com/ Today's Bible verse, Psalm 118:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%20118%3A24&version=NKJV Takeaways: Finding reasons to celebrate brings joy to our lives, even on challenging days. Our family uses a red plate with the words “You Are Special” on it to celebrate all sorts of things. It's special because we make it special. Celebration foods are made more special when we they are saved for special occasions. Reasons to celebrate can include the milestones we typically think of, like birthdays and graduations or “firsts.” Mini celebrations around accomplishments or effort can also elevate our mood and lighten our days. Consider mini celebrations around completion of difficult tasks or just persevering through challenging days or seasons. “Just because” is also a valid reason to celebrate. Get creative! The benefits of finding reasons to celebrate include building confidence around difficult tasks, giving us a breather, bringing people together, encouraging gratitude, and improving our attitudes. Mini celebrations can include a favorite treat, a change of scenery, attendance at an event, tiny gifts, interjection of music (or dancing!) in our days, time playing a game, or just time connecting with family or friends. This topic is a breath of fresh air for family caregivers and care receivers. I share a favorite audio clip from the Disney movie, Mary Poppins, highlighting the importance of finding the fun “in every job that must be done.” Author Courtney Ellis suggests we should all be more open to what she calls “the joy and freedom of play.” Even in the messiness of family caregiving, I couldn't agree more There are many benefits to a playful mindset, for caregivers and everyone who surrounds them. Playfulness is easier to work into your day than you might think. Check out this episode for four simple steps to finding the fun in your day and for approaching the messiness of family caregiving from a playful perspective. One of my favorite episodes so far! Hope it gives you fresh perspective to consider as you move through your days. Jill Savage recently interviewed author Courtney Ellis on The No More Perfect Podcast. Courtney wrote a book in 2021 about the importance of incorporating playfulness into your day. According to Ellis, “Playfulness raises us from our doldrums, lifts our gazes, and buoys our spirits. It holds the power to transform our lives. A gift from God who created us, playfulness reminds us that we are a people dearly loved and set free to tell everyone that they are dearly loved, too.” Caregivers can find a million reasons not to be playful, but there is joy to be found in adopting this mindset when circumstances allow it. My four steps to finding this joy in your day include giving yourself permission to play, looking for opportunities to play, not making it harder than it is, and not expecting perfection. Ellis suggests we think of something we loved to do as a child and adapt our activities in that direction or think about what we'd do for fun if we had a day to ourselves. I offer some ideas to encourage us to think more on this! Our Bible touchpoint from Ecclesiastes suggests there is a time for every activity under heaven, including a time to laugh and a time to dance. What a blessing to incorporate playfulness into our days as family caregivers! Let's Connect! Deep breathing can be used to re-energize or calm the body. Even one belly breath can be beneficial. Belly breathing can be practiced almost anywhere (in the car, working at the computer, in the doctor's office, etc.) and uses the diaphragm to more fully inflate and deflate the lungs. The ratio breath includes inhaling through the nose to a count of 4, holding the breath for count of 7, and exhaling through the nose or mouth for a count of 8. The box breath is a simple breath technique that may be helpful for children or visual learners. Breathing can be done as you trace the sides of a box drawn on paper or in the air, inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 4 counts, exhaling for 4 counts and holding for 4 counts. The more you practice this breathing, the more helpful it becomes, day or night. Let's Connect!
