Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In this episode, I chat with Jill Savage of “No More Perfect Marriages.” She shared her story of infidelity in her marriage, and how God has since healed her marriage so that she and her husband, Mark, now have a beautiful sacred scar and are able to minister to other married couples in despair. Quotables from the episode: The normal trials of life is the stuff that ultimately leaves us with sacred scars. Painful trials are part of our normal experience this side of heaven. Our marriage experienced a slow-fade while we both had huge responsibilities outside the home. The downward spiral started with an emotional affair and then resulted in a physical affair. The enemy took a direct hit to our greatest area of ministry. I began a one year process of standing for my marriage. “Standing for Your Marriage” is when one spouse believes and contends for the marriage while the other spouse checks out. The most painful thing I have ever experienced was my husband's betrayal. I had a ministry based on authenticity and I determined to be open and honest about my pain. I didn't cause my husband's infidelity, but I did contribute to the dysfunction in my marriage. It's important that we build a supportive community outside of times of tragedy because when we're in a crisis, we don't have the energy to do that. We can use our hard times as fertilizer for growth! As I began to change, my husband started seeing that as his own personal seeds of growth. God can turn our pain into his purposes. God forgives us the first time we ask—when are we going to forgive ourselves? Nothing is impossible with God. The God of the universe wants to do his best work in the cracks of your life. It takes two to build a marriage, but it takes one to divorce. It takes two to restore a marriage, but it takes One to restore a life. Together they share why they decided to make things work rather than divorce and open up about how they've been able to make their marriage stronger. Whether you've experienced infidelity or you're just going through some rough patches, you'll benefit from the many insights from our discussion. About Mark & Jill Savage: Mark and Jill Savage are passionate about encouraging, educating, and equipping families and marriages. After serving in church ministry for twenty years, the Savage’s are now meeting the needs of families as authors, speakers, and coaches. Known for their honesty, humor, andpractical teaching, Mark and Jill bring hope and encouragement to every audience. Jill is the host of the No More Perfect Podcast and the author of fourteen books, including thebestselling No More Perfect Moms. Together Mark and Jill have created five online marriagecourses and authored several books including No More Perfect Marriages, I Really Messed Up,and My Heart Is Broken. The parents of five adult children, and grandparents of six, theSavage’s make their home in Normal, IL. Insights: Mark - Mine is on of a faith response. Its to humble yourself. Grab hold of the hand of Daddy God, and let Him lead you through the mess. Jill - There is hope and, and redemption available. Whether a marriage makes it or not, there's hope and redemption available. And so I think that it's, you know, that's kind of where I sat, you know, whether my marriage makes it or not, I have some growth to do. Dave - Having humility, compassion, positivity; fundamental values for relationships, and I can't echo that enough. And that no matter where you are in your relationship, that we're going to hit these rough patches, some more serious than others. I feel like if we would forget the person that we thought we married and get to work on the relationship with the person that we did marry and focus we’d find enjoyment and remind ourselves, the principal that we remember what we rehearse, we remember what we review. And if we're reviewing the negative, and the mess and the yuckiness that we don't like, then that's what we will remember. But if we can flip the script that you talked about, refocus, change that heart, and search inward and turn outward. Liz - Let work to flip the script, to crucify the negative and celebrate the positive. Because whatever I do focus on grows, and I'll find the evidence of whatever I believe I'll find it. Leslie interviews Jill Savage, host of the No More Perfect Podcast, a creator of online courses, and the author of 14 books, including "No More Perfect Moms" and "No More Perfect Marriages." The episode dives deep into Jill's personal journey of resilience, redemption, and unconditional love in the face of a significant marital detour. The Marital Detour and Learning to Love Unconditionally: Jill's husband, Mark, resigned from pastoral ministry after 20 years, a decision that initiated their challenging journey. The difficulties they faced during a church plant took a toll on both of them. Mark's personal struggles with self-worth and identity, stemming from his abusive upbringing, contributed to their marital problems. Depression had been a recurring issue in Mark's life. Jill describes the emotional detachment and emotional affair that strained their marriage. She reflects on God's call to love Mark, even when he seemed unlovable. Boundaries and saying "no" became essential components of her love. Jill turned to Romans 12:9-21 as her guiding principles during this challenging time. She aimed to honor Mark as an image bearer, despite his actions. Jill learned that love isn't always soft; it can also include firm boundaries. During their separation, Jill displayed grace and love, which Mark later acknowledged. Heaping burning coals on his head meant allowing him to see his own actions more clearly. A Journey to Healing and Treating an Image Bearer with Honor: Jill shares how Mark's personal resurrection on Easter Sunday in 2012 turned their marriage and his life around. The concept of redemption played a significant role in their journey. Jill emphasizes that her journey was not about controlling the outcome of her marriage but focusing on who she needed to be in the process. Leslie highlights the importance of treating a spouse, even during a crisis, as an image bearer. Jill shares how she maintained honor and respect for Mark despite his behavior. Loving unconditionally often includes setting boundaries and holding the other person accountable for their actions. The Unhumanable Love and The Power of Keeping Your Side of the Street Clean: Jill reflects on the term "unhumanable love" and how it became a central theme in her journey. She explains how this type of love is beyond human capability and can only be achieved through faith in Christ. Jill's actions and love towards Mark made him realize the depth of her love and grace. Leslie and Jill discuss the importance of maintaining personal integrity and avoiding retaliation. Focusing on one's actions and growth can lead to a clearer path to reconciliation. Jill shares personal anecdotes about times when she struggled with anger and imperfection during this process. Conclusion: Jill's journey is a testament to the power of love, grace, and redemption in the face of marital challenges. The importance of maintaining personal integrity and heaping burning coals on the other's head is a valuable lesson. Healing and restoration require effort from both parties, but unconditional love can be transformative. Welcome to another bonus episode of the No More Perfect Podcast! We like to surprise you every once in a while with some quick and helpful podcast goodness, just for you. Thank you for being here!In this episode, Mark and I discuss the powerful principle of “Pray, Don't Say.” This phrase helps us slow down our reactions, be thoughtful about our responses, and seek God's leadership in our relationships. We started using this phrase about the transition into the empty nest life, making the transition from sharing our opinions about our adult child's life to holding back our thoughts unless we're asked for them. However, this principle applies to all areas of life, including marriage, work, and other relationships. This is a great principle to remind us to talk to Jesus before we talk to our spouse, our child, our coworker, etc. We hope this bonus episode is an encouragement to you this week!Thank you for being part of the No More Perfect community!Show Notes: https://jillsavage.org/bonus-pray-dont-say-149/

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: So often as parents we focus on raising our children but give little attention to preparing for life when they are no longer in our home. Today we're going to be talking about reinventing yourself after the empty nest. Jill Savage is here to give us hope from her own experience. Quotables from the episode: Empty nesting is like experiencing grief upon grief…nothing prepares you for the tsunami of emotions. Think of the empty nest as your encore season. If we don't let go of what was, we can't hold on to the new. You'll always be a mother or father, but you are no longer parenting them. Our expectations are preconceived resentments. The higher our expectations, the greater the risk of discontentment. It's time to keep our opinions to ourselves and join the “keep it shut club” and pray it, don't say it. When we let go of opinions, we become a safe place to be around. Your kids' new life is not a rejection of you, it's a reflection of their growth and independence, learning how to navigate adulthood. Sometimes we've made our kids' successes/choices an idol in our heart. Worry is a worship of our circumstances. Motherhood is a ministry of availability. “What do you have for me, Lord? Help me to see that more than less.” Recommended Resources: Rebuilding Trust Course The Wait Is Not Wasted Course No More Perfect Marriages by Mark and Jill Savage FREE Rebuilding Trust Guide Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. After many failed attempts to share my experiences as a Black mom, I stopped trying. Wait! Let me be more clear. I rarely share these stories with white women. After way too many pushbacks, "what-about" questions, and straight-up dismissals, I decided for my own mental health to reserve that part of me for safer spaces. Today I offer you a peek into my world as a Black mom. I'm joined by my friend Barb Roose who also shares a few of her own stories, as we talk to the host, our friend Jill Savage. This topic is a breath of fresh air for family caregivers and care receivers. I share a favorite audio clip from the Disney movie, Mary Poppins, highlighting the importance of finding the fun “in every job that must be done.” Author Courtney Ellis suggests we should all be more open to what she calls “the joy and freedom of play.” Even in the messiness of family caregiving, I couldn't agree more There are many benefits to a playful mindset, for caregivers and everyone who surrounds them. Playfulness is easier to work into your day than you might think. Check out this episode for four simple steps to finding the fun in your day and for approaching the messiness of family caregiving from a playful perspective. One of my favorite episodes so far! Hope it gives you fresh perspective to consider as you move through your days. Jill Savage recently interviewed author Courtney Ellis on The No More Perfect Podcast. Courtney wrote a book in 2021 about the importance of incorporating playfulness into your day. According to Ellis, “Playfulness raises us from our doldrums, lifts our gazes, and buoys our spirits. It holds the power to transform our lives. A gift from God who created us, playfulness reminds us that we are a people dearly loved and set free to tell everyone that they are dearly loved, too.” Caregivers can find a million reasons not to be playful, but there is joy to be found in adopting this mindset when circumstances allow it. My four steps to finding this joy in your day include giving yourself permission to play, looking for opportunities to play, not making it harder than it is, and not expecting perfection. Ellis suggests we think of something we loved to do as a child and adapt our activities in that direction or think about what we'd do for fun if we had a day to ourselves. I offer some ideas to encourage us to think more on this! Our Bible touchpoint from Ecclesiastes suggests there is a time for every activity under heaven, including a time to laugh and a time to dance. What a blessing to incorporate playfulness into our days as family caregivers! Let's Connect! Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Join me with guests Mark and Jill Savage as we discuss how to rebuild trust and rebuild your marriage after cheating. Marriage is hard on the best of days, but when infidelity and temptation enter in, it makes it very painful. You won't want to miss this enlightening episode as Mark and Jill share hope from their personal experiences. Quotables from the episode: After infidelity, you don't want to go back to life as normal. Even after cheating, with two willing people, marriage can become restored and stronger. The one who broke the trust has the biggest impact on how fast trust will be rebuilt. If you don't heal wounds in an inappropriate way, it will leak out at an unfortunate time. The question after enduring cheating and infidelity is, “Lord, how do you want to use this to grow me?” Scripture References: Romans 8:5-6 ESV “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Philippians 4:13 NLT “For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” Isaiah 41:13 NIV “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Recommended Resources: Rebuilding Trust Course The Wait Is Not Wasted Course No More Perfect Marriages by Mark and Jill Savage FREE Rebuilding Trust Guide Revive & Thrive Fall Virtual Women's Conference Trusting God Through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God Through Cancer Summit 2 Ten Minute Turn Around Courses with Tina Yeager Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Jill Savage: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / Tiktok / Pinterest For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety's Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails / Website / Blog / Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson) / LinkedIn / Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube Guest: Jill Savage is an author and speaker who is passionate about relationships. The idea of living in a perfect marriage is one that is promoted by the media, but it's also one with many misconceptions. It seems like the perfect marriage is just within reach, but it's not something that any of us can truly attain because we all have flaws and imperfections. Marriage isn't about being perfect, it's about two people who are committed to building intentional relationships that reflect God's love for us. That said, there are ways that can help make your marriage more enjoyable. This episode will discuss some of these ways with our guest Jill Savage. Jill is an author and speaker who is passionate about relationships. Founder of 'Hearts at Home', a national organization that served moms for 24 years, Jill now speaks to thousands of men and women each year about their priorities, their passions, and their purpose. Welcome back to the No More Perfect Podcast! Over the years, I've had the opportunity to author 14 books (still kind of crazy to think about, honestly!) and learn quite a few lessons along the way. There is rarely a week that goes by where I don't get an email that says, “I want to write a book but I don't know how to get started. Help!” I usually send a couple of suggestions their way, but today we are going to cover this question in a more robust way that just isn't possible over email. In this episode, we're talking all about how to know if you're ready to write a book, how to define your why, what it looks like to go the traditional and self-publishing route, why having a platform before you write a book is crucial, and so much more!If you have been wondering how to write a book or how to get a book published, then this episode is for you! If you've never thought about writing a book, maybe this is an episode you could send to a hopeful author you know! Or maybe this will just be a helpful tool to learn all about what goes into becoming a published author. This is such an exciting topic, but there are a lot of facets to consider. So excited to share this with you and hear what stands out most to you!Show Notes: https://jillsavage.org/writing-books-58/

It can sound a lot like pride. Or a lot like shame. And most of the time, it goes unrecognized for most of our lives. Marriage can be messy and far from normal. But what can we learn about loving our spouse when they don't love us back? How do we trust God to work in us when hope seems lost? Can God heal your marriage? God has not called us to be normal because normal doesn't exist. Not in life or our marriage. When we let go of our expectations and trust God, we have peace knowing He can repair the broken and redeem what was lost. Jill Savage, author, speaker, and podcaster, joins me for an honest conversation about life and marriage when anything but normal.
