Peace of mind is a hot commodity. I'm betting you would agree. So many circumstances (and even some people we know) can steal our peace! The Apostle Paul talks about “peace that passes understanding.” What is that, and how do we access it? Peace that passes understanding is NOT…Easily obtained…it requires a willingness to study, to confess, to be humbled, to let go of control, and to believe.A vending machine of blessing…I put in so many prayers and out pops my solution!“Worldly peace” that comes from healing on the world's terms or winning on the world's terms or seeing those who threaten our peace punished.Peace that passes understanding IS…Only found in one place, that is a relationship with God that is deep and trusting. A lifelong pursuit to know God more.Trusting that God is at work. He is never a passive bystander.A result of being broken and humbled by our situation so that we are prompted to look for God.Counter cultural, no, it's “other worldly.”The foundation for all hope in our lives, no matter what peace stealers threaten us.So, today, here's your gentle reminder that the God of the universe is at work in your life, even as you feel peace stealers all around.Yes, he wants our prayers and our gratitude, AND he desperately wants a relationship with us. Think of this imagery. He's got you by the hand, and he is walking it out with you. That's the imagery in Josh Wilson's song, The Things That I'm Afraid Of, from 2022. This song is a powerful reminder of God'sintention to walk through life hand-in-hand with us.Until next time, may the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your heart and mind focused on knowing and trusting God is at work in your mess!Have a blessed Easter! I know a number of caregivers or spouses who are going through some really hard changes right now. Maybe that's you; maybe it's someone you love. You're exhausted, sad, angry, or just numb. You're coming to terms with a new diagnosis, a deteriorating condition, hard changes in a relationship, a difficult move or adjusting to the loss of someone central in your life, someone you love very much. I'm amazed by the number of friends I have who are caring for parents whose lives have changed in hard ways. What does God's word say about the idea of change in the lives of his people? It didn't take me five minutes to come up with a list of 100 verses about a heavenly perspective on change. God has a lot to say about it. In invite you to think on these things.God is unchanging. Let him be your anchor.Malachi 3:6 – “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”Following Christ involves a continual process of change, where we grow in holiness and leave behind our old ways.Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”Life is full of transitions, but God is sovereign over them all.Ecclesiastes 3:1 – “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” When facing change, we're called to trust in God's guidance rather than their own understanding.Isaiah 43:19 – “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Even when change feels overwhelming, God is faithful to complete the work He has begun in us.Philippians 1:6 – “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” According to the Bible, change is inevitable, but we are assured that God is in control and that His purposes will be fulfilled.Today I'm encouraging you to believe God is with you and he goes ahead of you wherever life is changing…in the positive changes and in the hard changes. Especially when change is hard, lean into the people and the places that will remind you of this. Guard what goes in your ears and your eyes. All of that affects your spirit and your outlook. Look for his hand. Trust his provision and his good plans for you. That's a focus on gratitude. Sending you love and light today. I hope you can feel it, and I hope you share it, even as seasons change, as sunlight comes and goes, and you reflect on the blessings in your mess.Resources:My website: www.lorischlosser.comMy Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lorischlosserspeaksMy Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/lorischlosserspeaks/Blessed in This Mess can be accessed on all major streaming platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.
New year, fresh vision, new focus for the Blessed in This Mess podcast, "Encouragement for Every Season." I'd like my digital footprint to reflect the positivity and light I carry with me, on my best days, yes, but especially when life is messy. Can you relate to a messy life? When the check engine light comes on and you smell oil. When an adult child accepts a fabulous new job...800 miles from home. When a little one's development is marked by unexpected changes or challenges. When you're cleaning out the house that holds so many memories, preparing for your next chapter. My goal is one post each week on the socials and one 7-12 minute podcast episode a month, with content that supports your faith journey, whole body wellness, and a focus on gratitude. Let's do this together. Grab that basket of laundry or your morning coffee. Put the car in drive or put your earbuds in for a walk, and join me! Let's do this! It's January, the perfect month to pivot the podcast in a slightly different direction. I'm excited to share this first episode of 2025, when I'm expanding my focus to offer encouragement and support across the board...to family caregivers AND anyone who could use gentle reminders about self-care, faith formation and maintaining a posture of gratitude, especially when life is messy. What's been your approach to a new year? Do you make New Year's resolutions? Researchers say most resolutions don't last four months. Consider this idea. What if we use the entire month of January to do these 3 things? The first is to practice solitude. The second is to spend a little extra time in prayer, Bible study, and reflection. Third is a specific reflective exercise offered by one of my favorite authors, Emily P. Freeman. She suggests January is an excellent time to reflect on something we want, something we need, and something we hope for in the New Year. I share an example to get your wheels turning on this suggestion. I used to loathe the cold, gray days of winter after the holidays. Now I see the wisdom and purpose in God's gift of January. This episode focuses there. Blessings on your January! This is the year in review, with a look at my top three lessons learned as I focused on “strengthening relationships in person” in 2023. It has been a wonderful year, filled with unexpected blessings as I connected with other caregivers and translated my experiences into podcast episodes. Lesson #1: There is no substitute for being fully present with each other, face to face, heart to heart. Check out Episode 31, “The Gift of Time” for more on this topic. Lesson #2: Self-care is the single most elusive piece of family caregiving. We all need daily reminders, fresh ideas, and inspiration to get this done. Self-care topics are sprinkled throughout episodes from 2022 and 2023. Lesson #3: Gratitude may be the most powerful weapon in our arsenal against anxiety, fear, depression, and pessimism. Check out Episodes 9, 32, and 33 for more on this topic. In 2023 these practices, being fully present with others, self-care, and daily gratitude have been so life-giving for me and for the caregivers in my world. Please consider “gifting” yourself in each of these areas in the new year. After much thought and prayer, I'm pivoting again in 2024. My website, lorischlosser.com, has been updated and will remain a point of contact for speaking engagements and for listening to all the content I've recorded over the last couple of years. In 2024 you can still reach me via Facebook at Lori Schlosser or on Instagram at lorischlosserspeaks, but I'm unplugging the boom microphone on my desk for the time being as I step in faith into the promise of 2024. I'm so grateful for your support of this ministry and for the way you share it with others. Thank you for encouraging me along the way with your notes and messages. They have meant the world to me. Behind every successful podcaster is a devoted crew. Mine includes my husband and our sons (my "editorial board") who have believed in this ministry even when my energy wavered. Special thanks to our son, Noah, who created my digital footprint in so many places, taught me how to use recording software, and professionally engineered every episode. I can't tell you how much his support has meant to the quality of the finished product. In 2024, as always, you will remain on my heart and in my prayers. May God richly bless you with strength, patience, wisdom, and peace in the year ahead. If you need me, you know where to find me. Thanks for listening! Happy New Year! I'm flipping the script this Thanksgiving week, with this special prayer for family caregivers. Mara Botonis was a caregiver by profession until her work became personal when her grandfather, who had raised her, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Mara penned this prayer, which is really an exercise in unspoken gratitude, in her book, When Caring Takes Courage. I believe the sentiments shared in her writing apply to family caregivers in all circumstances, whether your care receiver is a parent or grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a spouse, a sibling, or a child. These sentiments may be shared often between you, or you may seldom hear these words spoken. I hope you find them life-giving. May the Giver of all good gifts grant you the strength, the patience, the courage, and the wisdom to meet each challenge, wherever you are in your caregiving journey. And may your spirit be renewed as you reflect on all the goodness in your life this Thanksgiving. November provides an opportunity for us to pause, share our experiences, and be strengthened in our journeys, as it is BOTH National Family Caregivers Month AND Diabetes Awareness Month. So many of us just do what we do day to day, seldom advocating in a public way, seldom sharing our struggles, sometimes too weary to answer another question or educate even interested family members or friends about our journeys or our need for support. Today, as we begin November, a few reminders: 1. You have permission to be honest… to share your experiences transparently, unashamed. 2. You have permission to be sad… to remember, to cry, and to grieve. 3. You have permission to connect…. to rally with your people and to share each other's burdens. There is blessing in both sharing and listening to someone who trusts you to understand. No matter where you are in your journey, your experience could help someone else. 4. You have permission to take a breath…. to practice self-care like it's your job. :) I'll give you some ideas! 5. You have permission to let it go… to remember you are, ultimately, not in control. You are doing the best you can. I encourage you to hand it all over to God, because He reminds us, time and again, that on the heavenly calendar it is ALWAYS your month, and He's right there with you in your struggle to care for a loved one and/or to manage blood sugar. We are reminded in Matthew 28:11 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Rest is a wonderful thing, in November and always! Has family caregiving changed you? Your personality? Your outlook? The way you view yourself or others? I recently asked this question to a room full of family caregivers, and the response was overwhelmingly affirmative. Caregiving for someone with a chronic illness, extended sickness, or disability is life-changing, and not necessarily in a good way. I suggest we have a choice around the way in which we are changed. The daily challenges of caregiving may make us more pessimistic, anxious, or angry. Or, they may gradually transform us into someone who is more optimistic, flexible, and confident. I believe we have a choice, and the daily practice of gratitude is more powerful than previously understood. Join me as I pick up where I left off in Episode 32 and introduce the concept of neuroplasticity. That's a big word that captures our brain's God-giving capacity to change. Neuroplasticity gives us hope around the potential for positive changes in brain structure and response, even in the face of tough days (or weeks or years) as a family caregiver. I touch on the work of Dr. Andrew Huberman (Huberman Lab Podcast), a neuroscientist who has researched the connection between a daily practice of gratitude and a wide range of positive changes in the brain. I encourage you to a SHARED daily practice of gratitude, which may include your care receiver. It's a win-win! Consistency is key. What have you got to lose? A focus on gratitude has become one of the most powerful tools in my caregiver toolbox. I have found it to be a gamechanger, especially when days are long and exhausting, or one challenging day as a family caregiver runs seamlessly into another. Did you know there is science to a posture of gratitude around changes in body chemistry and neuropathways? Our bodies release chemicals when we practice gratitude that build positive neuropathways. The more positive neuropathways, the better we feel. Did you know you can't be anxious and grateful at the same time? A focus on gratitude amplifies the good in our days, rescues us from toxic feelings, and strengthens our relationships with others. A grateful posture helps us sleep better, supports our immune system, increases our interest in eating right and exercise, affects our interest in healthier behaviors, and decreases our perceived aches and pains. I invite you to listen to the podcast, take the Gratitude Challenge, and reap the benefits of a daily focus on gratitude. I also invite you to join me at the AgeLinc Caregiver Conference, Saturday, September 16, at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. Reservation deadline is September 4. You won't want to miss this opportunity to be further encouraged and equipped for the very important work you do! I hope to see you there! Last month I lost a special person whose positive influence on my formative years as a young professional is undeniable. This episode takes me back to the 1980s (VHS movies, big hair and big shoulder pads) for a reflection on the passage of time, often a precarious subject for family caregivers. We may dread the hours we spend caring for someone we know is not going to get better. We may wish we could slow time as we teach a child to manage a health condition more independently as she grows and eventually leaves home. When we're caring for someone who will outlive us and will continue to need extra support, but we don't know who will step up or how that will happen, we may fear the passage of time. When caregiving means missing family events, lunches with friends, or holiday gatherings, time can feel wasted. This episode invites us to repackage our negative impressions about the passage of time spent as a family caregiver. What if we approached each day, no matter how challenging, like a precious gift? What might that look like? Listen in! Two years ago, I was really struggling with sleep while caregiving for my mom, who was in her final weeks of life after several strokes and years of vascular dementia. Falling asleep was one thing. Waking at 3 a.m. and not being able to fall back to sleep was a whole other issue. The thoughts would swirl and build momentum, as I became more conscious, increasingly fretful, and fully awake in the early morning hours. I was a veteran of the Sleep Wars, having raised a child with blood sugar that danced around all night, in the days before insulin pump alarms and continuous glucose monitors. There was a lot of interrupted sleep to test blood sugar and to ensure he would be safe through the night. But the sleeplessness I experienced around Mama's struggles was filled with so much anxiety and sadness. How is your sleep? Do you get the recommended 7-9 hours? I imagine you may not. Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep says 60 million Americans suffer from poor sleep quality. Today's Caregiver says 72 percent of caregivers report problems sleeping. Is that you or someone you love? Today I'm sharing a couple resources I hope you'll find helpful for quality sleep, along with my experience around strategies for falling to sleep more peacefully and returning to sleep if you wake in the night. I also share some biblical perspective on sleep, along with encouragement to seek additional support if all else fails. Quality sleep is so important for all of us. May you rest peacefully each time you lay down to sleep! The hosts of one of my favorite podcasts, The Daily Grace Podcast, open each episode with delightful chatter about their latest “favorite things.” On days when I am particularly exhausted or overwhelmed with the caregiving gauntlet, I especially enjoy this chatter. It's light and entertaining. You can tell the hosts enjoy it too, as they describe, in detail, the best thing about something as frivolous as a newly discovered tea flavor or a lip gloss color that looks wonderful with every skin tone. What fun distractions! We all need those! In my view, favorite things are an integral piece of self-care, because they fill our proverbial “cup” from which we draw the patience, kindness, and strength to care for others day in and day out, over the long haul. How long has it been since you thought about or, better yet, treated yourself to one of your favorite things? Today I share a few of my current, favorite things. Nothing glamorous or expensive. I also share a few tried-and-true favorites that cost absolutely nothing, but are rich sources of self-care. The resource list is long. I hope it inspires you to take a few minutes for yourself and experience the life-giving effects of a daily self-care practice that includes at least one of your favorite things. As I shared in Episode 25, my personal focus in 2023 is on strengthening relationships, in person, face to face. I wasn't really sure how many podcast episodes I would produce this year. God has had the lead on this venture all along. That continues. While I relish the creative process, and I love interviewing guests, my 2022 production/promotion schedule was so time-consuming. This extrovert missed being with other people, and I felt called to "get back out there" in meaningful ways. The first two months of 2023 have been filled with reconnection of all sorts. So good for the soul! In this episode I share a reflection on the connections I've made in the last two months, a powerful story about the beauty of face-to-face interaction, and words of encouragement for even the weariest caregiver. There is nothing in the world like genuine, face-to-face, heart-to-heart connection. Even the briefest encounter can be so life-giving. I hope this episode brings you as much joy listening as it brought me to record. 2022 was an unbelievable year for the Blessed in This Mess podcast. Thank you for supporting my work in so many ways! In this episode I pay tribute to the year that was and share my plans for 2023, where my focus will be on strengthening relationships in person, rather than creating new podcast episodes and promoting them on social media. In the new year, my website and the archive of Blessed in This Mess episodes will continue to be available on all major streaming platforms. Therein lies the beauty of podcasting, a lasting auditory footprint. Please continue sharing episodes with friends and family who might need some encouragement in the mess of their caregiving journeys. And, yes, you may listen to them as many times as you'd like. I will continue to respond to messages on my website, on Facebook and on Instagram. I'll leave you with this final thought as I close this chapter and we look to the promise of 2023. Regret leaves us in the darkness of the past, and fear and worry project darkness into our future. None of that darkness is from God. Let's live in the light of the present, grateful for our blessings, big and small, and reliant on the God who gives us purpose each day, even in the messiest days of family caregiving. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support of this ministry that started as a call on my heart and grew in unbelievable ways to reach more people than I imagined possible. You are, and will continue to be, on my heart and in my prayers. If you need me, you know where to find me! I hope to see you soon! L. It has been an amazing six months encouraging and supporting family caregivers through my website, social media and the Blessed in This Mess podcast! Seems an appropriate time to reflect on where we've been and consider where we're headed. Today I'm sharing my Five Golden Nuggets, my pick of the important lessons I've learned since the podcast debuted in January. You have taught me so much through your feedback in person, on social media and on my website. See if the takeaways below resonate with you, and check out the resources that support your work as a family caregiver. I'd also appreciate your feedback about the topics or guests you'd like to listen to going forward. Is there some area of caregiving that is particularly challenging for you? What topic has helped you most? You can connect with me through the website or message me on social media. I'd love to hear from you! And THANK YOU for listening and for sharing the podcast with your family and friends! The statistics around the sheer number of family caregivers and the negative health outcomes often associated with this role have surprised most of my audiences. Family caregivers benefit from easily accessible, reputable resources, like the Caregiver Action Network. Contrary to what some may believe, men care about family caregiving, either because they are caregivers themselves (40 percent), or because their loves ones are serving in this role. Listening to understand, not necessarily to respond, may be the greatest gift a family caregiver can receive. Never underestimate the value in finding someone who will listen without judgement or immediately going into problem-solving mode. George Monbiot has been working on issues of climate and environmental justice for three decades. A columnist for The Guardian, George's books include Heat: How to Stop the Planet From Burning, Out of the Wreckage: A New Politics for an Age of Crisis and How Did We Get into This Mess? Politics, Equality, Nature. His latest essay collection This Can't Be Happening "calls on humanity to stop averting its gaze from the destruction of the living planet, and wake up to the greatest predicament we have ever faced." As a public communicator on climate change, George has experienced deep frustration in trying to convey the urgency of the crisis to a media and and political establishment that refuse to confront reality or accept the need for drastic changes to the status quo. That frustration was captured well, he says, by the recent Netflix satire Don't Look Up, which is about scientists who are unable to convey the importance of stopping a planet-destroying comet from crashing into Earth. In fact, the film is such an accurate allegory for the climate crisis that one scene in directly parallels a recent incident in his own life: the scientist played by Jennifer Lawrence, trying to get the hosts of a celebrity-obsessed TV morning show to take the problem seriously, breaks down in frustration. George has been on a very similar morning show himself to discuss climate change, with very similar results. Watching Don't Look Up, George writes in a column for The Guardian, "made me see my whole life of campaigning flash before me." On today's episode, George joins Current Affairs editor-in-chief Nathan J. Robinson for a discussion of why it's so difficult for climate scientists and activists to get their message across, and what we need to face up to when it comes to the climate crisis. George's work is not hopeless or apocalyptic, and is built around solutions and the determination to work for a better world. But to reach that world, we need to first look up, and start talking and behaving differently, demanding a political response that is proportionate to the magnitude of the problem. We can deal with this crisis but it requires willpower and focus.
George Monbiot is a writer, activist and environmentalist. As well as having a regular Guardian column, his books include: Feral, Age of Consent, How Did We Get into This Mess? and Out of the Wreckage: A New Politics for an Age of Crisis. His latest collection, This can't be happening (Penguin), is a collection of galvanising speeches and essays, calling on humanity to stop averting its gaze from the destruction of the living planet, and wake up to the greatest predicament we have ever faced. This event is chaired by Alison Johnstone MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

In this episode, Sarah Ladislaw talks with Dutch environmentalist Alexander Verbeek about his interdisciplinary outlook to climate change, which he terms ‘planetary security.' They look at the need for a multidimensional approach to making climate policies successful, drawing on decision makers in governments, the private sector, and society. Alexander looks for signs of progress from all areas: the United States, China, India, technology innovations, Fridays for the Future, the arts, and more. Alexander Verbeek is a Dutch environmentalist, public speaker, diplomat, and former strategic policy advisor at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is founder of the Institute for Planetary Security. Over the past 30 years, he has worked on international security, humanitarian and geopolitical risk issues, and the linkage to the earth's accelerating environmental crisis. OMC 298 Your Part in This Mess by Jaemin Frazer
Fake news, sex trafficking and #MeToo, corporate corruption, violence, soaring debts, the opioid crisis. It's fair to say that now, in 2019, America has a moral crisis, or to put it another way, an ethical crisis. Back in 2011, in the wake of the Great Recession and financial crisis, Chuck Colson and Princeton Professor Robert George combined to produce a 6-part video series on ethics called, “Doing the Right Thing.” They enlisted the help of Fox News contributor Brit Hume and gathered panels of scholars, theologians, business and government leaders on the campus of Princeton University to discuss America's crisis of ethics in every sphere of public life—in government, education, and the market place. Today on the BreakPoint podcast, we present episode 1, “How Did We Get into This Mess?” This, and all the episodes of “Doing the Right Thing” were filmed in front of a student audience. Each session ends with the panel taking questions from the students. The Doing the Right Thing DVD Series as well as small group study guides are available at our online bookstore. esources Check out the DVD series and study guide for "Doing the Right Thing: An Exploration of Ethics"

This week we had local Swerve favourite somersault in for the subsonic take over. The man him self has come through a few times now and needs little introduction. We had a good chat about what he has coming up, what he is gonna be wearing and some other banter. Here is a bit of info Somersault’s music is uncompromising. Heavily influenced by the shuffling rhythms of dark UK garage, atmospheric techno and deep melodic house, Somersault likes to straddle the line between the delirious highs and murky lows, a sound that’s brought his unique sets to outdoor festivals and underground clubs. The young producer has come a long way from working as a funk guitarist to producing music played on international festival stages by Jon Convex. While his initial entry into electronic music was with electronica duo This Mess, Somersault came into being while travelling through Europe and immersing in the rich club culture in 2014. He is however, no newcomer to dance music having played at major Australian festivals Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Dragon Dreaming and Burning Seed as well as at major Sydney club nights S.A.S.H, Something Else, Blueprint, Foxlife and Cakes supporting PleasureKraft, Pepperpot, Simon Caldwell, Made In Paris, Politics of Dancing and Robbie Lowe. Somersault's eagerly awaited Stampede EP is soon to be released on Upon Access, Sydney’s groundbreaking new label curated by Techno Heavyweight Made In Paris. The EP has been causing a stir in promo pools worldwide gaining praising support from Oliver Schories, Laurent Garnier, Marco Carola, Riva Starr, Sasse, Uone, Joe T Vannelli Steve Ward, Sossa, Joris Voorn, Horse Meat Disco, Marc Poppcke In early 2016 Somersault released his most ambitious work: the four track concept ‘Ultramarine EP’ on Build It Records. The EP instantly entered the Beatport top 100 Deep House Chart and received over 40,000 plays on soundcloud within the first week of release. ‘Ultramarine’ covers much deeper, darker and groovier territory than the producer’s prior work. 2015 saw the release of three widely acclaimed EPs on US imprints Build It and Particles (Proton). His release ‘Devotion/Respect’ had over 15,000 plays on Soundcloud after only two days. ‘Space Is Big’, the producer’s most successful Particles release, has since been remixed by progressive house luminaries Alex O’Rion and Sebastian Weikum. Somersault’s schedule is filling with two planned releases on Australia’s prolific Open Records and bookings at Bohemian Beatfreaks Festival, Squared Senses Festival, S.A.S.H, Foxlife and Something Else. Check him out on all channels and at the festival https://www.facebook.com/somersaultmusicaus/?fref=ts https://soundcloud.com/somersaultmusic
This week, I had the chance to talk to Maarten Zeinstra, from Amsterdam-based think tank Kennisland, to find out more about the project Copyright Exceptions. We already know copyright law is particularly complex, but things do get even more confusing once you look at the different regulations each one of the 28 European Union countries has. On a completely different side note, I would like to thank to Starfrosch and Musique Libre for helping me out in finding the CC licence of This Mess is Mine release, which allowed me to play it on the show. They are both great resources if you’re into Creative Commons music, so make sure you check them out. By the authority vested in me by the State of This Mess, I now pronounce you podcast and listener. You don't have to kiss us if you do not want to. Welcome dear listeners to the Failed Critics podcast, where a hastily arranged 'movie weddings' triple bill is the main feature this week. Partly inspired by Steve's drunken escapades at a wedding reception this past weekend, the team promise that they haven't prepared an emotional speech that lasts for days. Although I can't promise that everyone remained sober and civil without offending each other and coming close to blows over one or two selections.
