THE PLUGGED IN PRAYER LIFE: Listen! | Hearing God's Voice in a Noisy World

From Nathaniel Baldwin's kitchen-table invention of headphones in 1910 to today's ubiquitous AirPods, our relationship with audio has transformed dramatically. We're constantly plugged in, listening to something—but are we tuning into what matters most? The advancement of audio technology is a powerful metaphor for our prayer lives. While we've mastered the art of speaking to God—powering up, plugging in, calling out—many of us struggle with the essential step of listening for His response. As Jesus reminds us, "My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me" (John 10:27). This isn't just poetic language; it's an invitation to authentic relationship where we're not just doing all the talking.God speaks in myriad ways—through creation's magnificent sounds, through spiritual leaders and worship, through His still small voice, and most consistently through Scripture. The challenge isn't whether God is speaking (He is), but whether we're creating space to hear Him. Through the practical "Seek Him, Speak Him" approach, we learn to ask three powerful questions: What is God saying through this passage? Why does this truth matter? How should I respond? Each question creates a natural pause for listening. This practice isn't just for personal growth—it's something we're called to model for those we disciple. Whether in short car conversations, around the dinner table, or through family messages, we have daily opportunities to demonstrate what it looks like to not just talk at God but to engage in genuine two-way conversation with Him. When we listen together, we grow together, and we amplify God's voice to the next generation.Ready to transform your prayer life? Download our Conversation Guide and discover how to put on your spiritual headphones, block out distractions, and truly hear what God is saying to you today.______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Have you ever tried calling someone repeatedly only to get voicemail? Or wondered if your number was blocked? Unlike our often-frustrating human communications, God offers an always-open line. The invention of the telephone in 1876 revolutionized how people connected, eliminating distance as a barrier to conversation. Similarly, prayer eliminates the distance between us and God, offering instant access without wires, Wi-Fi, or physical proximity. Throughout Scripture, God gives us His "phone numbers" – Jeremiah 33:3 says "Call to me and I will answer you," Isaiah 65:24 promises "Before they call, I will answer," and Psalm 91:15 assures that "When he calls to me, I will answer him." These aren't just poetic words but promises from our God who actively invites connection. This episode explores the third concept in our Plugged In Prayer Life series: after powering up (recognizing God as our source) and plugging in (turning our hearts toward Him), we're now invited to call on Him through prayer. Our theme verse, Jeremiah 29:12, proclaims this promise: "Call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen."What makes this concept especially powerful for discipleship is how it speaks the language of today's tech-savvy generation. Children who instinctively understand phones and expect instant digital access can easily grasp the concept of calling on God. Every time we reach for our phones can become a reminder to whisper a quick prayer – a thank you, a simple request, or just acknowledging God's presence with "Lord, I'm here" or "Lord, I need you."Join us in this conversation about maintaining an open line with God, and discover how to use everyday technology as a spiritual prompt for yourself and the next generation. Check out our coordinating conversation guide at familydiscipleme.org to deepen your understanding and application of this transformative truth.______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Have you ever panicked when your phone battery reaches that critical red zone? That moment of desperation for a charger perfectly mirrors our spiritual lives. Without connection to God's power, we might look fine on the outside while internally running on empty. This episode explores the revolutionary concept of prayer as our spiritual "outlet" – the connection point between God's ever-present power and our daily lives. Just as Harvey Hubble's electrical outlet invention in 1904 finally gave ordinary people access to the power grid that was already flowing, prayer gives us personal access to God's divine presence that surrounds us constantly. At the heart of this message is James 4:8 – "Come near to God and he will come near to you." This Scripture reveals both an invitation and a promise that transforms how we approach prayer. God isn't distant or difficult to reach; He's waiting for us to connect. When we turn toward Him, He immediately turns toward us. Prayer isn't about perfection or performance; it's about plugging into God's presence throughout our day – in traffic, during chores, in moments of worry, or sleepless nights. The most beautiful part? When we stay connected to God's power, others notice. Like a house illuminated during a blackout, our lives stand out. Though we can't create someone else's connection with God, we can certainly show them where and how to plug in themselves. Your prayer life doesn't just transform you; it becomes a beacon that draws others to the same divine power source.Ready to move beyond just living near the power to actually connecting with it? Join us as we discover what it means to stay spiritually charged through a lifestyle of prayer. Your soul was never meant to run on empty.______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Have you ever wondered why some prayers seem electrified with divine power while others feel like words disappearing into thin air? The answer might be simpler than you think.Drawing on a fascinating historical parallel, this episode takes us back to the early 1900s when American homes first gained access to electricity. Just as families had to make a deliberate choice to connect to the power grid, we too must decide whether to truly "power up" our prayer lives by plugging into God's unlimited mighty power.James 5:16 reveals the stunning truth that "the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." This isn't because our words themselves generate power, but because we're connecting directly to the Creator who spoke stars into existence and raised Jesus from the dead. Prayer isn't powerful because of what we say – it's powerful because of who we're talking to.This episode marks the beginning of the "Plugged In Prayer Life" series, which uses pivotal moments in American history to illuminate spiritual truths about connecting with God. We explore how scripture repeatedly promises that God "gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." These aren't empty spiritual platitudes but invitations to stop relying on our limited human capabilities and instead tap into divine power.Whether you're feeling spiritually drained, standing in darkness despite being near the grid, or simply wanting to experience more of God's transformative power, this conversation offers practical insights for making that vital connection. The same way electricity revolutionized daily life a century ago, prayer can revolutionize your life today – affecting not just your present circumstances but eternity itself.Ready to move beyond merely speaking words and truly power up your prayer life? Life's seasons change, but purpose endures. As I (Tosha Williams) launch Season Six (!!!!) of the Family Disciple Me podcast, I'm also entering a new personal chapter—my youngest just turned 18, marking the end of almost three decades of active parenting. This transition feels monumental yet clarifying: though my daily routines will transform, my fundamental mission remains steadfast. From childhood through parenthood and now approaching empty-nester status, my north star has been consistent: knowing Christ and making Him known. This simple yet profound purpose—what we at Family Disciple Me call "seek Him, speak Him"—transcends life stages and circumstances. Whether you're raising young children, launching adults, or entering grandparenthood, discipleship adapts while its essence remains unchanged.May brings our eighth annual prayer-focused conversation series, "The Plugged In Prayer Life," and our ministry continues developing a discipleship app, hopefully launching by year's end. But remember—discipleship doesn't require advanced tools; it starts with simple conversation. Jesus walks with us, His power flowing through us, His presence guiding our way. Whatever your current life season, embrace the conversations that matter most. Because when every believer steps up to seek and speak Christ, the world changes one relationship at a time. Will you join this journey today?______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Have you ever woken up thinking you knew what the day would hold, only to have everything change in an instant? That's exactly what happened on that first Easter morning. The disciples woke believing Jesus remained in the tomb, despite His repeated predictions of resurrection. Their journey from doubt to faith mirrors our own spiritual paths today.Easter Sunday fundamentally changed everything, yet it began not with celebration but with wondering and questioning. The disciples had witnessed Jesus die. They'd watched His burial. But when reports came that the tomb was empty, most couldn't believe without seeing for themselves. Thomas, in particular, needed physical proof—to touch the scars in Jesus's hands and feet. Rather than shaming Thomas for his doubt, Jesus responded with profound compassion and spoke a blessing that extends through time to us: "Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."This blessing forms the heart of our faith journey today. While we don't have the privilege of physically seeing Jesus, we experience Him through Scripture, prayer, answered petitions, and witnessing transformation in others' lives. The resurrection isn't just historical fact—it's living truth that changes how we approach each day. Parents have a special opportunity to discuss these profound realities with their children, sharing personal testimonies and explaining why we believe despite not seeing. Easter invites us to live resurrection-empowered lives, finding joy in relationship with the living Christ who continues His good work in us until completion.Share this episode with someone who needs encouragement in their faith journey! When the palm branches of celebration give way to the cross of suffering, what happens to our faith? Good Friday confronts us with the most challenging spiritual question: Do we still believe in Jesus when things don't go as expected? The contrast is stark. Just days after the crowds shouted "Hosanna!" Jesus was betrayed, beaten, and crucified. For His disciples who had witnessed his miracles and power, this devastating turn of events must have shaken their faith to the core. Their teacher and friend was suffering before their eyes, and everything they believed about Him seemed to be unraveling. We face similar faith challenges today. Life often resembles railroad tracks with good and bad running side by side—answered prayers alongside ongoing struggles, miracles in one area while still waiting in another. The question becomes whether our faith can be like those railroad ties, connecting these parallel experiences without becoming a spiritual train wreck when difficulty arrives.Jesus prepared His followers for this very test. The night before his crucifixion, he told them, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me" (John 14:1). He knew what was coming and offered them—and us—a way through: choose to keep believing, even when understanding fails. What makes Good Friday truly "good" is that suffering wasn't the end of the story. John, who witnessed these events firsthand, later wrote that he testified "so that you also may believe." His message echoes through centuries to remind us that our pain, like Christ's, is never the final chapter.Join us as we explore how to maintain faith through life's darkest moments, knowing that Easter Sunday is coming. When we can say "Yes, I believe" even in our Good Fridays, we discover a faith that transcends circumstances—and a powerful testimony to share with the next generation.______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. "Do you believe this?" Jesus' profound question to Martha before raising her brother Lazarus reverberates throughout Palm Sunday's celebration and directly into our lives today. When faced with impossible situations, do we trust Jesus before seeing the miracle?Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, but the story actually begins with a pivotal miracle—Lazarus' resurrection from the dead. Martha's declaration of faith before seeing her brother alive again demonstrates genuine belief in Jesus' identity, not just His abilities. This same question confronts us: Do we believe Jesus is who He says He is and that He can do what He says He can do?The Palm Sunday celebration itself reveals something fascinating about human nature. While crowds enthusiastically welcomed Jesus with palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna," their motivations varied dramatically. Some had witnessed Lazarus' resurrection and believed wholeheartedly. Others followed political hopes or simply joined the excitement. Most telling was what happened afterward—when adults returned to their regular lives, the children continued worshiping Jesus in the temple. Their unwavering, childlike faith challenges us to examine our own belief. Do we praise Jesus only in celebratory moments or consistently through all seasons of life?Personal stories of faith challenges, like Tosha's experience with her desperately ill daughter, remind us that believing isn't always easy, but it's transformative. In those critical moments when circumstances seem impossible, Jesus still asks, "Do you believe this?" The answer shapes not only our relationship with him but our ability to pass authentic faith to the next generation. Join us for this Easter trilogy as we journey through Holy Week's most significant moments and discover how they transform our families today. This month, we continue celebrating the lives of those who lived radically, even "madly," for Jesus. And few lived a more persistent, passionate, and prayer-fueled life than Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine—one of the greatest theologians in Christian history. Join me, Tosha Williams, and my friend Wendy Hickox as we dive into talking about this incredible woman of prayer. Her story is not one of grand sermons, dramatic miracles, or public ministry. Instead, she lived out a quiet, determined, and fiercely faithful life—a life that seemed foolish to some but was profoundly powerful in the Kingdom of God. Her "madness" was relentless prayer, sacrificial love, and unshakable hope in the face of heartbreak. Her life exemplifies the truth of James 5:16:  “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." James 5:16 (NIV)In our culture that celebrates independence, instant gratification, and self-reliance, Monica's relentless faith looks foolish. A mother weeping over a rebellious son for seventeen years? The world might call that madness. We call it crazy amazing. Monica's life challenges us to keep praying and trust God to work in the hearts of those we love. He calls us to live boldly, trust fiercely, and pray relentlessly. He calls us to live crazy amazing lives for Jesus—not because we see immediate results, but because we serve a God who is always at work.Listen in on this podcast, then spend some time with the Lord about praying like Monica. We talk about what matters to us, and this should be true in our relationship with God, too. In this episode, join Wendy Hickox and me, Tosha Williams, as we ponder the invitation of Isaiah 12:4:  to declare, proclaim, praise and make known who God is. Thing is, God doesn't just want us to experience His goodness but to boldly proclaim Him to others. With our series "I Wills to Instill" as the backdrop, Wendy and I discuss what this can look like. Discipleship begins with a conversation, and this podcast challenges us to skip the intimidation and get to these conversations that really matter. Listen in, then reflect on what God is saying to you through this conversation guide about Isaiah 12:4.********************I WILLS TO INSTILL:  "I WILL Speak Him"“And on that day you will say, ‘Give thanks to the LORD; proclaim his name! Make his works known among the peoples. Declare that his name is exalted.'” Isaiah 12:4 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!  In this conversation, let's process what it means to make our faith more than just a private experience. Isaiah 12:4 reminds us that, as followers of Jesus, we don't just keep God's goodness to ourselves—we speak Him by sharing what He has done in our lives.WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?  This verse talks about a day when God establishes Jesus on His throne. Thing is, if He is on the throne of our hearts, then that day can occur today. In multiple ways, God's people can “Speak Him,” making Him known through our words. ~ What are the different kinds of speech referred to in this verse? What do His works include in your life? Is Jesus ruling your heart now?  WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? If we don't talk about what matters to us, how will others know? Jesus' command “Go make disciples… teach them to obey everything I have commanded you,” requires words. We can exalt His name through our testimonies and make His works known through our Jesus stories. ~ How does it feel to talk about Jesus to someone else? How can speaking about your faith strengthen it?  HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? We don't have to hammer people with the Bible. With the Family Disciple Me ministry, our motto is “Seek Him Speak Him.” Let's spend some time with the Lord in Isaiah 12:3 about what it means to “Seek Him.” WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? To draw water is to bring it up from the depths bucket by bucket. In the same way, Scripture by Scripture, truth by truth, principle by principle, day by day, God wants us to go to His wellsprings of life and seek Him. ~ Have you received God's salvation; when, why, how? Look up “how to get water from a well with a bucket” and think about the intentionality it takes to get water this way. How does this help you better understand what it means to “Seek Him.”WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? To draw water requires effort, intentionality, work and determination. In ancient times, this was essential to physical life, something to be done every single day. ~ How often do you make the effort to spend time with the Lord each day? If joy is the measure of how much you “Seek Him,” how joyful are you? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? The springs of salvation are available to all of us; the question is what we choose to do with this resource. We draw water when we daily decide to seek the Lord in our lives. ~ What is God saying to you personally about seeking Him? In what ways are you determined to “Seek Him”? Read Psalm 36:5-9 and listen to what God says to you through it. SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! As we are filled with the life-giving, soul-nourishing water from God's springs of salvation, will you stay quiet or let your bucket-full overflow into someone else's life? ______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Today I - Tosha Williams - mark a 50-year anniversary of faith that began when I was just four years old. Join me as I reflect on the incredible milestone of walking with Jesus for half a century. This episode is about my 'spiritual Jubilee,' a biblical tradition that has guided my last twelve months. Journey with me through the profound experiences and unexpected joys, like the serendipitous gift of my granddaughter named Jubilee, that have marked this sacred passage of time.Throughout this episode, I'll share my past five decades with Jesus - - - but the story's not over. The best is yet to come. Whether you're new to faith in Christ, are considering it, or have your own decades-long journey, let's spend a few minutes together. Here's to 50 years of faithfulness and the promise of what the next 50 years might hold.****************Often, in posting a podcast episode, we provide written devotion-driven-discipleship content. For this week, we encourage you to dive into this one your own. Spend some time with Jesus meditating on the truth in the following verse, Joshua 1:8. "Seek Him" using the three questions as guides. Ask Him to speak to you through His Word, and listen to what the Spirit of the Living God says to you. Maybe even write down what He impresses on your heart. Then, remember, with the Family Disciple Me ministry, "Seek Him" always leads a Christ-follower to "Speak Him." Share with someone else what God is showing you. Here's the first Scripture highlighted in this episode:"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” (Joshua 1:9)SEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!  Let's spend some time with the Lord asking Him these three questions about this Scripture verse:WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Life is filled with uncertainty, yet, whatever a new year brings, we can find strength and even joy through trust in God. This latest podcast episode talks about the determined decision to trust Him no matter what happens in life. Let's look at biblical insights from Isaiah 12:2  - - - continuing our "I WILLS to INSTILL" conversations. Listen in on this episode, then spend a few moments in personal devotions with this conversation guide.******“I WILLS TO INSTILL” - Convo #2:  I Will Trust God“Indeed, God is my salvation; I will trust him and not be afraid, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! A new year is filled with knowns and unknowns. And, while we can make plans, we can't choose everything about our lives. What we can choose is our mindset for living. Let's see how Isaiah 12:2 encourages us to say “I Will Trust God.”  WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? This verse is about at least two things:  God's character and our response. God tells us He is entirely capable of being our salvation, strength and song. He won't force these gifts upon us, though. Instead He lets us choose what we will do with all He offers us. ~ Have you accepted God's gift of salvation? If so, are you living by His strength or your own?  WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? We have a daily choice:  to live with fear and anxiety, or to trust God with our lives. God's Word promises, “The one who trusts in the Lord will be happy,” (Proverbs 16:20b). You can know if you're trusting God by examining whether stress or a song is echoing through your heart. ~ What do you need to trust God about today? How can trusting God lead to happiness? When you experience an unhelpful thought or emotion, how can you trust God with it? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Trusting God means that, no matter what happens, we choose to rely on His character and promises. This determined decision echoes the verse, “In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid.” (Psalm 56:4 CSB). ~ How can you praise God when you're going through something hard? How are you actively letting go of fear so you can hold onto trusting God's character and promises?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! A person who really, truly trusts God won't be afraid to speak up about it. Jesus said, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises. And again, ‘I will put my trust in him.'” (Hebrews 2:12-13a NIV). We can follow Jesus' example and “Speak Him” to all those watching our lives. Who is watching you, and will you speak about your trust in Him today?© 2024 Tosha Lamdin Williams ______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Kicking off a new year, join me (Tosha Williams) as we focus on adopting the powerful "I will" mindset. In this new conversation series, we're going to look at multiple "I WILLS" from Isaiah chapter 12, starting with "I Will Give Thanks." Giving thanks can deepen our understanding of what God is doing in and around us. Let's start this year with gratitude then seek to instill that mindset into those entrusted to us! Listen in on this podcast episode, then consider the following devotion driven discipleship conversation from Isaiah 12:1 as you "Seek Him Speak Him":********************I WILLS TO INSTILL:  I Will Give Thanks“On that day you will say:  ‘I will give thanks to you, Lord, although you were angry with me. Your anger has turned away, and you have comforted me.'” Isaiah 12:1 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! We live in a world of what we can't do, could do, might do, ought to do, or should do. However, as we begin a new year, let's talk about what we will do. This is about our deliberate desire to initiate action in our lives. Let's seek God about this, starting with the mindset, “I Will Give Thanks.”  WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?  Isaiah 12:1 is a prophecy about how God's people will respond when Messiah begins to reign. Their first reaction will be to thank and praise God. ~ What is something you are determined to do this new year? Is Jesus in ruling in your life right now; why or why not? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Gratitude affects our perspective about everything, including how we see God. Sometimes God gets angry over things that should make us angry, too - things like dishonesty (Proverbs 11:1), injustice (Proverbs 17:15), and wickedness (Romans 1:18). We can focus on what we don't like about Him, or we can seek to understand Him and His ways. ~ Is there something about God that you don't like or understand? Is He doing anything in your life right now for which you can be thankful? Has He comforted you in any way?  HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Scripture says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV). God's will is for us to focus our will on Him with thankfulness and gratitude. ~ What if this month we start each day intentionally thanking God for something? What can you thank God for right now? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! A thankful heart is one that looks to see the blessings rather than the burdens, the miracles instead of the mess, God's Presence instead of the problems. What we “will to instill” in our own lives is what we can then instill into those entrusted to us. If you determine “I WILL Give Thanks” this new year, then let your grateful heart impact someone else today.© 2024 Tosha Lamdin Williams ______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. What if the gifts we unwrap each Christmas could teach us something profound about love? Join me, Tosha Williams, in this story of my daughter Annalarie, whose childhood curiosity about our family's Christmas gifts is a metaphor for us to understand love. Let's examine real love versus the counterfeit versions often presented to us. Listen in, reflect on love in your own life (using the following guide), then be encouraged to let this devotion lead you into talking about love with your family and friendships this Christmas season.*****************“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!  The world offers all kinds of gifts labeled “love,” but God's faithful love is entirely unique. As we look at “The Gifts of Christmas," let's "unwrap" God's gift of love and seek Him about how He loves us!WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? God is good and gives really good gifts. We can see His generosity in so many ways. God's greatest gift is His love that never stops. The people of Israel rejoiced in this, as the leaders would proclaim "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good," and then name a way God showed His love. After each gift, the people would respond:  "His faithful love endures forever."  ~ What are some gifts you've received that have stopped working? Name some ways God has helped you. What can you thank God for right now?WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? While other gifts wear out or break, God's love always lasts. Scripture says, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life…” (Psalm 23:6a NIV). Every single day, God's love follows us, not just at Christmas, but always. Long after even the best presents are forgotten, the gift of God's love will still be ours. ~ Can you imagine fifty years from now? What does it feel like to know that even years from today, God will still be loving you? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Scripture reminds us, “Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children, and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us…” (Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV). Because God loves us, we can love others. As we unwrap His gift of love in our own lives, we can share it with others, at Christmas and always! ~ What about God's example stands out to you? What is one way you "walk in the way of love"? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others!  As we lead others in Devotion Driven Discipleship, Psalm 136 is an example for conversations about God's love. With those entrusted to you, share different ways He's shown you His love. After each example, repeat the refrain, “His faithful love endures forever.” This is a way to “Seek Him Speak Him”!______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Embracing the JOY of Jesus will transform our lives, not just during the Christmas season but all year round. Let's explore this truth, drawing inspiration from the story of the angels and the shepherds, who discovered the joy of saying "yes" to God's invitation. Let's unpack how joy is not just a fleeting emotion but a deep, intrinsic part of our relationship with Him. Whether you're navigating the complexities of life or facing moments of loneliness, this episode invites you to consider how accepting God's invitation can lead you to a lasting and fulfilling joy.**********“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with JOY in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11 NIVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Christmas is known as the happiest time of the year, but what about the rest of the year? What gives us true happiness? Thing is, Jesus came at Christmas bringing the gift of His presence. This can fill us with joy at Christmas and always. Let's spend some time unwrapping the gift of joy through His Word!WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? God doesn't just give occasional joy; He promises to fill us up with joy as we stay close to Him. He helps us know what paths to follow, and He gives us joy as we walk with Him along the way. ~ Does God sound like a generous gift giver in our key verse? What stands out to you from our verse? Where is joy found? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? The truth of our key verse mattered so much to the Apostle Peter that he recited it in his testimony centuries later (Acts 2:28). Joy in God's presence has mattered to generations of His people, and we can choose for this to matter to us, too. ~ How does this verse encourage you? What does God's presence feel like to you? What type of path do you want to walk?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Each of us gets to decide every day whether or not we will stay close to Jesus. Being in His presence means being mindful of Him, relying on Him, talking to Him and spending time with Him in His Word. This is His path that keeps us close to Him and will result in giving us joy. ~ How are you choosing to stay close to Jesus? How much joy do you have today? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! After Christmas, we put away the decorations, but the joy of God's presence can decorate our lives all year long. As we “Seek Him,” we can pray with joy (Philippians 1:4), ask for more joy (Psalm 86:4) and sing with joy, because “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy” (Psalm 126:2a, 3 NIV). God's gift of joy is always available, and we can “open” this gift and experience His joy again and again. What's more, our joy with Him can overflow so that we “Speak Him” and share His joy with others, at Christmastime and always. ______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Even during the happiest season of the year, we can experience fear and anxiety. God has a gift for us in the midst of this, though. Join me (Tosha Williams) as I share a personal journey of wrestling with sadness only to discover in a new way the power of God's peace. Even when circumstances don't change, His peace will change us. In this episode, let's "unwrap" His peace. Seek Him Speak Him!**********“The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” Psalm 29:11 NIVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble,” and even in the best of times like Christmas, life can be challenging. However, God gives us a special gift, for in the same verse Jesus also said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have PEACE” (John 16:33 NIV). Jesus came to bring peace, so let's “Seek Him” about this gift.WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? God gives His people so many gifts, including, as our key verse says, the gift of peace. This peace is God's blessing for those who belong to Him. His peace is not just an occasional experience when life is good; it's His gift of completeness and wholeness throughout our lives. ~ According to our key verse, who receives God's gift of peace? Are you one of God's people? Where do you need God's peace today? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? The world teaches us that peace is the absence of problems; God's Word teaches us that peace is His gift in spite of problems. Jesus promised: “PEACE I leave with you; my PEACE I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27 NIV). ~ What's the hardest thing you've gone through? What does Jesus say about this? Why can you trust Him in hard times?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Scripture says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the PEACE of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV). Instead of fixating on hard things, God wants us to talk to Him about these. ~ What must we give God in order to receive His peace? Is there something making you anxious or afraid right now? Let's pray!SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! One of God's promises to those who “Seek Him” is:  “All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace” (Isaiah 54:13 NIV). As we learn to unwrap God's gift of peace, others can learn from our example. This Christmas and always, let's be sure to spend time being taught by the Lord. This Christmas, let's unwrap and examine some of the most profound gifts God has given us, starting with the gift of HOPE. In this podcast, I (Tosha Williams) share about the  surprising origins of hope in Genesis 1:9, which caught me off guard and has captivated my heart. Listen in to this episode, then seek the Lord in the following "Devotion Driven Discipleship" guide. Then be encouraged to begin a meaningful conversation about HOPE with someone God has entrusted to you!****“The Lord is good to those whose HOPE is in him, to the one who seeks him” Lamentations 3:25 NIVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! The Bible teaches us that God gives us a gift that He wants us to anticipate, look for and hold onto, not just at Christmastime, but throughout life. Let's “Seek Him” in this conversation for what He wants to show us about His gift of HOPE! WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? Just like we anticipate the fun of Christmas, God wants us to anticipate what He is going to do. This kind of watchful expectation is called HOPE! God promises goodness and blessing to people who hope in Him and seek Him, and this is something we can all do! ~ What are you looking forward to this Christmas? How hard is it to wait? What are you looking forward to God doing in your life? How are waiting and hoping similar?WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Sometimes we may be disappointed by other hopes and expectations, but God promises:  “I am the Lord; those who HOPE in me will not be disappointed” (Isaiah 49:23b). When we anticipate how God is going to work in our lives, and when we wait expectantly for Him to fulfill His promises, we can know that He will always, always, always do what He has said He will do.” ~ How does this truth encourage you? What is a promise from God that gives you hope?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Each of us can choose to watch, wait and hope in the Lord, saying:  “As for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me” (Micah 7:7). We “unwrap” God's gift of hope as we experience His answers to our prayers, His help in hard times, and the fulfillment of His promises. ~ Do you really believe that God hears you? How does knowing God sees and hears you give you hope?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Scripture says, “In your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the HOPE that you have…” (1 Peter 3:15). Thing is, as we unwrap hope, we shouldn't just keep it to ourselves. We can share God's hope with our families, and we can also be prepared to share God's hope with others He places in our paths. How does the reality of God's presence impact you today? This question is central  to the significance of my grandson Zion's name. Though Zion has historically been a symbol of joy and hope, today it seems its deeper meaning is lost. So join me as I talk about Zion and reflect on its joyful reality. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let's reclaim the excitement surrounding Zion and allow it to guide us into a season rich with gratitude. *********WAYS TO PRAISEZion:  Celebrate God's Presence“Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things. Let this be known throughout the earth. Cry out and sing, citizen of ZION, for the Holy One of Israel is among you in his greatness.” Isaiah 12:5-6 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives!  Christ followers can rejoice because God is with us! Let's “Seek Him” about how the truth of ZION leads us in “Ways to Praise.”WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? God's children are citizens of a heavenly city, and, as we are on our journey there, God is with us here every step of the way! The biblical concept of Zion refers to His presence now and in eternity. ~ What is something special God has done in your life?  What is something glorious God has done in your life?WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Each of us has sadness, sorrows and pain in our lives, but the reality of Zion is not just future tense. For believers, God is with us now, and this reality can bring us joy today no matter what's happening in our lives! ~ What about the hope of Zion encourages you today? Read aloud the six verses of Isaiah 12. What about this chapter speaks to joy and celebration? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth?Isaiah 12 is about thanksgiving for God's many gifts, including comfort and salvation, joy and strength. Scripture says, “You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God... to myriads of angels, a festive gathering” (Hebrews 12:22 CSB). When earth touches heaven, the result is celebration. Scripture promises, “The ransomed of the LORD will return and come to Zion with singing, crowned with unending joy. Joy and gladness will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee” (Isaiah 35:10 CSB). ~ What happens to the sorrow and sighing of Zion's citizens? What are some ways you can praise God right now? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Psalm 48 concludes, “Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭48‬:‭12‬-‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬). What are YOU telling the next generation about God's presence? WAYS TO PRAISE: Psalm // Declaring God's Character as We Wait for His Favor // Our Sweet Baby A

This Thanksgiving season, join me, Tosha Williams, as I share some profound themes that arise from my grandchildren's names. These aren't just sentimental to my family; the names are powerful reminders of gratitude and thankfulness and, in this conversation series, "Ways to Praise."This series starts with this intro "Dumisani:  Praise the Lord!" then continues with "Jubilee:  Declare God's Favor". Thing is, Jubilee is the counterpoint to Psalm, both in my family and in our gratitude. This podcast episode explains how both together can impact our days and our praise! Listen in, then seek the Lord through this "devotion driven discipleship" conversation guide...*******“Be filled by the Spirit: speaking to one another in PSALMS, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything…” Ephesians 5:18b-20 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Let's celebrate Thanksgiving with some psalms of praise this year. WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? A psalm is a biblical song, poem, declaration or prayer. The book of Psalms is the Jewish worship manual, and Christians are invited to use it in our worship, too! Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs can lead us in so many “Ways to Praise.” Singing is an outer expression of this praise, while making music with your heart is an inner expression of it. God wants us to do both! ~ How or when do YOU give thanks? What does it look like for you to live a life of worship? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Every psalm in God's Word somehow, someway, declares God's character. For instance, we can trust God because He is faithful (Psalm 1:6). We can rejoice because He is sovereign over everything in this world (Psalm 2:11-12), and so on. Thing is, when we are filled with His Spirit, what's on the inside will pour out in declarations like the psalms. ~ What does God's Word say about His Spirit in you (John 14:15-17)? How does praising God put music in your heart?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? The psalms are such a meaningful, simple and beautiful way to praise the Lord. Ask God to highlight a psalm to you, then read it silently as a prayer and aloud as a declaration. ~ How do psalms lead to gratitude? What is one character trait of God that is especially meaningful to you? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Seek Him Speak Him" is so clearly shown in our key Scripture. Quite literally, the Word tells us to speak with psalms and give thanks. We don't just believe in God; we speak up about Him. To whom will you talk about Jesus and declare His character today?______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. This episode explores the significance of Jubilee, a concept that has profoundly shaped my life and faith journey as I mark my 50th year as a Christ follower. Celebrate alongside me (Tosha Williams) as I recount the unexpected joy of welcoming twins during my personal year of Jubilee. I hope my sweet Jubilee will inspire you to consider what God has done and is doing in your life! What's more, as we enter the Thanksgiving season, after you listen to this episode, then spend some time seeking the Lord guided by this conversation...******************Messiah's Jubilee: “The Spirit of the Lord God is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Isaiah 61:1-2a CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! We all enjoy good news, and the good news of Jubilee is redemption, hope and freedom. As we look at “Ways to Praise," let's seek the Lord about how He wants us to join the Jubilee then proclaim the good news of His favor to others!WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? Isaiah summarized what Jubilee is all about:  healing, liberty, freedom, and goodness from God. “To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor” is to let others know about God's gifts, so they can be invited into these blessings, too. ~ What are some of the blessings listed in our key verses? Has God given you any of these this past year? Have you told someone else about this favor? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? We all want blessing and goodness in our lives, and the way God gives these is through Jesus. This is good news we can experience with Him today as we seek Him. ~ In what ways does healing for the brokenhearted matter to you? What kind of freedom would you love to experience or see?  What are you experiencing with Jesus today?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? This Scripture says, "The Lord has anointed me to bring good news." This calling is on all of us who follow Christ, because He told us to go tell others everything He's taught us (Matthew 28:20). So think about what He has done in your life this past year. Sharing your Jesus Story is one way you can proclaim His favor! ~ Have you experienced any blessings from God this year? What freedom, hope or redemption has He given you? How can you share this good news ?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! There is so much to learn about the Jubilee celebration, but, for now, let's focus on talking about the good news of God's favor. To proclaim something is to make it famous so others can hear about it. As you consider the good news of all that Jesus has done in your life, how will you “praise the Lord” and make Him more famous this week?______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Can a simple Uber ride turn into a life-changing moment? Join me, Tosha Williams, as I recount an unexpected divine encounter I experienced during my very first Uber journey, where I met Dumasani, a driver whose name means "Praise the Lord." This serendipitous meeting was an answer to my prayers regarding this year's Family Disciple Me Thanksgiving conversations. God often works through everyday moments to affirm our faith journeys, and this year, He used this Uber ride to affirm the FDM gratitude series for me. My new friend Dumasani's meaningful, Zimbabwean name confirmed my desire to use some other really special names - like Jubilee, Psalm, Zion and Melodia - as welcomes into praise this Thanksgiving season. We'll explore these "Ways to Praise" in upcoming podcast episodes, but we'll start here with Dumisani:  Praise the Lord! Spend a few moment with me as I share this introduction, then listen to what God's Spirit wants to say to you directly through His Word. *******************“Hallelujah! My soul, praise the LORD. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing to my God as long as I live.” Psalm 146:1-2 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! While praise may seem obvious at Thanksgiving, let's look at it from some slightly different angles this month, starting with these first couple verses in Psalm 146. Seek the Lord about what He wants to say to you about praise and thanksgiving!WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? This psalm which models intentional praise and thankfulness. Praise flowed from the author's innermost being, and this person pledged to praise, not just for a day or holiday, but for all life long. ~ Do you praise God from your very core; why or why not? How long have you praised Him? What are some of the things this psalmist praised God for in Psalm 146? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Praise changes the focus of our hearts, gets our eyes off ourselves and sets our attention on the One who can help us. Praise will change our hearts from bitter to better, from hopeless to happy, from grumbling to grateful. ~ Are you more grumbling or grateful? Do you need any heart change this Thanksgiving season? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Psalm 146 is a testimony of how one person praised the Lord and why they praised Him. Godly praise calls forth godly praise, and we're going to talk about ways to praise in the coming days. ~ How is God asking you to respond right now?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Thanksgiving season is a great time to welcome others into praising God with us! Psalm 34:3 says, “Oh magnify the LORD with me. Let us exalt his name together.” Who can you say this to? Who will you invite into the “Ways to Praise” conversations? In our family, the journey from kid > employee > manager > boss > owner has been a deliberate continuum that applies not just to our kids but to us grownups as well.Listen in on this podcast and ask God how He wants you to engage your own family in this "devotion driven discipleship" conversation about responsibility! But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” Matthew 25:29 NLTSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Everyone has been given something, but not everyone is responsible with these blessings. What about us? Are we using well what we've been given? Let's consider what Jesus said about being a responsible steward in Matthew 25.WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus taught a parable about being responsible and wise with what we've been given. - Take a few moments to read Matthew 25:14-30. Describe some ways people used their gifts. What types of people get talents and gifts? What are some things that have been entrusted to you:  time, money, resources, opportunities, health, education… WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? We are to be good stewards or caretakers of what God has given us. Everything belongs to Him, and whether or not we use well what He's given us will determine whether or not He will give us more. ~ According to this passage, how does God feel about us wasting what He's given us? Does wastefulness matter to you; why or why not? What is God's measure for whether or not He is going to give us more? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? God entrusts us with more as He sees us be responsible with what He has already given us. If we want more abundance in our lives, then we must intentionally be responsible with the abundance He has already given. ~ What are some ways you're taking care of what God has given you?  Name three ways you can better steward what you've been given. SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! God has entrusted each of us with people, time and opportunities. How are we being responsible with these blessings? Are we using well the opportunities He's given us to invest in those we love? We live in a world where people lie, deceive, cheat and steal, all the while with smiles on their faces. Sometimes it's hard to know who to trust, isn't it? Thing is, though others around us may lack integrity, God wants His children to be trustworthy. Let's “Seek Him” about this character trait through Luke 16:10. WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? The word trusted in this verse is about being faithful, reliable and honest. The Bible says that having this sort of character in small things shows whether or not we'll have this sort of character in big areas of our lives. ~ What are some small things in your life right now? Why does Scripture say these little details matter? What about something like little white lies -  can you be a trustworthy person with these? (Why or why not?)WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? God is trustworthy; He is always faithful, reliable, honest and true. He wants us to have these character traits in our lives, too. When we choose to be trustworthy people, we follow His example and show the world a picture of what He is like. ~ Does it matter to you to be known as a trustworthy person; why or why not? Do you believe God is trustworthy? What are some ways He has earned your trust?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Details matter, even the smallest details. So we can practice being trustworthy in all the little details, as so that we will know how to be trustworthy in the big things. This applies to every area of life, so we always have opportunities to learn and grow in this character trait. ~ How are you seeking to earn others' trust? Are you true to your word? What is one way you have integrity when no one is looking? What makes you a trustworthy person?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Are you a sure and secure person? Wherever you are on the confidence scale, can you imagine living with unshakable confidence, not based on your own abilities but rooted in something far greater? Inspired by the classic film "The Sound of Music" and the empowering song "I Have Confidence," I (Tosha Williams) reflect on how these influenced my own life and family. Yet, we pivot to explore what it truly means to find confidence through God's promises. Through the lens of Philippians 1:6 and Psalm 27, we examine how to build a life on the foundation of God's faithfulness - a foundation that becomes our own strength. Listen in to this episode, then have a "devotion driven discipleship" conversation with someone entrusted to you - - - use these conversation notes to get the discussion started and see where the trail leads you!************ “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 NIVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Some people are naturally confident and sure of themselves; others of us struggle to know our worth or purpose in life. Thing is, God wants His children to find their confidence in Him and His work in us. Let's “Seek Him” starting with Philippians 1:6 about this character trait of being confident.WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?  To be confident is to be persuaded and convinced about a specific truth. For a Christ follower, that truth is that God started a good work in us and promises to finish it through us. ~ What are some ways that people typically get confidence? Are you one of God's children? What are two good things He has started in you? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Confidence for a Christian is not just about being sure of who you are, but being sure about what God is doing in and through you. As we follow Him, God wants us to be convinced that He is at work in every aspect of our lives. Jeremiah 17:7 says, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” ~ What are you placing your confidence in? What does this look like in your life?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? We can be confident in meeting life's challenges by leaning into our relationship with the LORD and asking His strength. ~ Read Psalm 27 and list the areas in which God's strength helped David be confident. Which of these can apply to your life? How is God calling you to place your confidence in Him? SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! As we grow with the Lord in being teachable, hard working and courageous, He will begin to fill us with confidence to do what He has created and called us to do. This includes speaking Him into the lives of others He has entrusted to us. Who can you encourage in the Lord today? Ever felt paralyzed by fear despite your skills and experiences? That's exactly where I found myself on my podcasting journey, even with a background in public speaking and broadcast journalism. By leaning on God's promise to be with us wherever we go, we can choose courage over fear and fulfill our divine callings. Courage isn't just a solo act, though; it's about living boldly for God in every part of our lives. We'll discuss the vital role of seeking and speaking His truth with unwavering bravery. Let's embrace the courage God offers and step boldly into the lives He has called us to lead._________“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” Joshua 1:9 NIVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! Where in your life do you face a challenge or have an obstacle? Without a doubt, every one of us has moments and seasons of discomfort, distress and even danger. How do we respond? What character trait defines us? Let's consider what God said to Joshua in this Scripture and “Seek Him” about what He's saying about courage to us!WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?  Instead of being fearful or discouraged, God wanted Joshua to live with strength and courage no matter where he went. ~ What makes you afraid or discouraged today? According to Matthew 28:20, is God's promise to Joshua true for you, too? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? Courage is the ability to do what God has called you to do no matter what. ~ What is God calling you to do no matter what? How does knowing God is with you help you face the hard parts of this? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Psalm 31:24 encourages us, “Be strong, and let your heart be courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord” (CSB). We will find our greatest courage, not in the depths of ourselves, but in the Lord. As we look to Him, our reserves of strength and courage are filled by Him. That's when we're able to live out all that He's called us to do no matter what. ~ How have you been trying to fill your courage tank? How does God want you to fill it? Where is He leading you that will require all the courage you can get from Him?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! Before God spoke Joshua 1:9 directly to Joshua, Moses had already challenged Joshua with this in Deuteronomy 31:6, saying “to him in the sight of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous…'” Joshua became a strong and courageous leader. What does it truly mean to be hardworking, and how can we align our daily grind with divine purpose? Reflecting on an eye-opening conversation with a woman in her 90s who claimed she was "too busy" for God's Word, this episode of the Family Disciple Me podcast challenges our conventional understanding of busyness. We dive into Colossians 3:23-24, exploring how God calls us not just to fill our schedules but to engage in our tasks with wholehearted dedication, working as if for the Lord and not merely for human approval.Come along as I (Tosha Williams) recount my own demanding day that started at 4:50 am and the profound shift that occurred when I viewed my responsibilities through a spiritual lens. Learn how you, too, can transform your to-do lists into acts of devotion-driven discipleship by seeking God's guidance and elevating your work to honor Him. Whether you're balancing multiple jobs or managing the chaos of daily life, this episode encourages you to work with all your heart for the glory of God. Tune in and be inspired to put your whole heart into everything you do - - - then engage a loved one in a discussion about being hard working, using the following conversation guide:******************“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23 NIVSeek Him:  All of us spend time doing something, whatever that is. While rest is important, God desires for His people to live with effort and intentionality. Let's turn our attention to Him and see what He wants to show us through this Scripture about the character trait of being hard working. What:  What is God Saying through this Scripture - Colossians 3:23-24?Why:  Why does this Scripture matter? How:  How Does God Want You to Respond to this Truth?Speak Him:  As we work hard, we model to others what it looks like to work hard. What's more, along the way, we have the opportunity to talk about what motivates us to live this way. When we put our whole hearts into what we do, and when we consider our labor as unto the Lord, this is a profoundly meaningful life story to share. Talk to those entrusted to you about why you do what you do. A simple daily carpool can turn into a profound spiritual journey when it's used for devotion driven discipleship. Join me (Tosha Williams) as I revisit the origins of my own family's carpool Scripture memorization tradition. This transformed our daily commute into a time of connection and spiritual growth, and it also became the foundation upon which I started the Family Disciple Me ministry. About ten years later, as my youngest daughter is a senior in high school, we are revisiting this tradition one more school year, starting with the character trait of being TEACHABLE. Listen in on this podcast, then join us in the tradition by using the following conversation guide with someone God has entrusted to you!*************************************************CHARACTER CONVERSATIONS:  Teachable“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.” Proverbs 3:1-2 ESVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! A teachable spirit benefits us, not only in our childhood or teenage years, but our whole lives long. As we spend time with the Lord and “Seek Him” through this Scripture, let's lask Him these questions and listen to what He wants to speak to us about the character trait of being teachable. WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture?  ~ What teaching and commandments are being referred to in this Scripture? Who is the “son” in this verse, and can you apply this to your life if you're not a son? What are some ways that you can keep from forgetting what you've learned? WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? ~ What kind of life do you want to live? Do you want to experience the bare minimum of life, or would you like more goodness added to your life? Do you have peace in your life; why or why not?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? ~ In what ways are you a teachable person? Are there any areas of your life where God is challenging you to be more teachable? How are you learning to “do good” right now?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! As we seek to have teachable spirits at every stage of our lives, we model to others what it looks like to be teachable. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Discipleship about being teachable means keeping God's commands in our own hearts and then impressing them on the next generation. Ask God to help you in this!______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. Growing up as a 'Navy brat,' I (Tosha Williams) was constantly tossed about by the tides of change, learning that a solid anchor is vital to weather the storms of life. An anchor chain from my childhood is painted in my mind's eye as a reminder of what can ground us in our ever changing lives. In the midst our own oceans of change, we can find an unshakeable anchor in the truths of God's Word. Hebrews encourages us, "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure" (6:19). As I share my personal reflections about this and dive into Scripture, we uncover how devotion and discipleship serve as our steadfast guide and source of hope, no matter how fiercely the winds of change may blow. This episode is the introduction to a series of conversations entitled, "OUR ANCHOR OF HOPE:  What About God Always Stays the Same?" The deep, unshifting ocean floor of His character is where we want to toss our anchor, and we want to have a chain of faith that doesn't just extend to those depths but gains strength and stability from them. Join us as we navigate these transformative truths so that, no matter what is shifting and changing around us, we remain anchored and unwavering.______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. There's something so special about first steps. I (Tosha Williams) remember when each of my five children took their first steps. I remember how they tentatively stepped and then how they took a couple more steps and then how they began to actually walk and then eventually run. We had so much joy watching each of our little ones begin their journey. Yes, I love babies' first steps, but I also love watching first steps for people who have just placed their faith in Jesus Christ. If you are one of those people - if you have just recently given your life to Jesus and are ready to take your first steps with Him - would you give me the privilege of walking alongside you as you begin this journey? In this conversation series we call "First Steps for New Believers," we're going to answer the question what do I do next to follow Jesus? This is an amazing journey and I would be so honored to walk alongside you as you take your first steps with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In this episode, we're going to talk about a first step that may actually surprise you. We're going to challenge you to do with a verse from the last book of the Bible: “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later” (Revelation 1:19 NIV). We challenge you to chronicle your unique journey to faith, the moments that led you to say "yes" to Jesus. This is not just a trip down memory lane—it's about etching your spiritual milestones into the annals of your history, crafting a legacy that will inspire and guide you as you grow in your journey with the Lord. We've designed the coordinating conversation guide (available in the Family Disciple Me app) to help you reflect on this. Spend some time in the discipleship conversation that goes along with it and then give yourself the space and the place to record your Jesus story so far. Be encouraged that your Jesus Story has only just begun; there's so much in store for you. But before you start running, take a few steps to remember and record how you got here. You'll be glad you did!______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. As we conclude our annual "May You Pray" prayer campaign, let's talk to God and with each other about this very thing! In the beautiful prayer of Ephesians 1, Paul prayed for his friends:  “(I pray…) his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead...” Ephesians 1:19-20a (NIV)Of course, we experienced God's power in salvation, but we can also experience this in so many other ways, as well. My family experienced God's incomparably great power in the life of our oldest daughter Anastasha, when He powerfully healed her from debilitating sickness. Then, just recently, we experienced this again in the healing of one of our unborn twin grandbabies. Need a little hope? We all do along life's way. What's more, people entrusted to us need hope, as well! So, as we continue our "May You Pray" prayer campaign, the next thing we want to pray for is hope!!! In this episode, let's talk about: "May You Pray for Hope Along the Way" as we consider the theme verse:  “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people” Ephesians 1:18 NIVThing is, we all need hope; we cannot live well without it. Hope is what keeps us going no matter what is happening in or around us. Hope is what helps us confidently pray and wait for God's answers to those prayers. Hope is what helps us rise above and look past the current crises in our lives. Throughout His Word, God calls us to hope in Him, and Paul prayed for his friends to be able to have this hope. So, ready to ask God to turn the lights of hope on in your heart? Join in this podcast episode, then listen to what God wants to say directly to you through the corresponding conversation guide, "May You Pray for Hope Along the Way."Be encouraged!!!______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. What do YOU keep asking God for? I'll admit, there are a few things I keep asking Him for in my life. However, there was one really special thing that the Apostle Paul kept asking God for when he prayed for his friends. He said: "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.” (Ephesians 1:17 NIV)If we follow Paul's amazing example, we will keep asking God for this, too! We can ask God for wisdom and revelation for ourselves and for those people we love and care about. This podcast episode is an introduction into the accompanying conversation guide:  "May You Pray to Know Jesus Better Today" which you can find at familydiscipleme.orgOut of all the things that we can pray for ourselves and others, let's keep praying to know Jesus better!!!  ______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. What great things are happening in someone else's life because YOU are praying for them? The Bible says,  “Pray for each other. Do this so that God can heal you. Anyone who lives the way God wants can pray, and great things will happen” (James 5:16 ERV).So... what great things are happening because YOU pray? In this podcast episode, we focus on who God wants us to pray and how He wants us to pray for them! The Apostle Paul wrote,  "Ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers” (Ephesians 1:15-16 NIV).
