The pressure to buy the perfect gift, attend all the holiday events, and create a sense of magic is intense! I am enjoying the season with a whole new perspective through her eyes but want to slow down and take a minute to consider what is actually important for our family. How much of these core memories are quality time spent vs being a huge event? I also share about feeling "cloudy" lately and trying to accept myself through the tough times, as well as, how I've started to come out of it. Thanks for listening, Happy Holidays! She is a graduate of the Yoga Studies M.A. program at Loyola Marymount University where she completed her thesis titled, “The Art of Suffering: Liberation through Anger & Radical Honesty.” Her research focuses on the intersection of race, philosophy, psychology, and its effects on modern transnational yoga culture. She has written on topics of identity, spiritual bypass, capitalism, colonialism, and racial inclusion/equity. She is also the co-host of the inaugural LMU Graduate Yoga Studies Podcast and Creative Director for “Good Death, Auspicious Rebirth” film project with True Dharma International Buddhist Mission. In her free time, she plays violin and volunteers for Prison Yoga + Meditation, a non-profit dedicated to providing meditation and yoga to inmates in Los Angeles county. Serenity was introduced to yoga as a young child on the foothills of the Korean mountains. From a young age, she questioned the nature of reality, death, and the human experience. Eastern spirituality was the backdrop of her life; she grew up in a family of natural healers, philosophers, and religious scholars. She lived in India from 2010-2011, where she immersed herself in Yoga, Jain, Hindu, Sindhi, and Tibetan Buddhist cultures and practices.  Three months before 9/11, she immigrated to the United States with her family and quickly discovered issues of racism and discrimination as a multi-ethnic Buddhist girl in the South. She lived just minutes away from the Trayvon Martin murder and mass shooting of LGBTQ+ Pulse Nightclub in Florida. Her personal life experiences ignited passion for research focused on social justice, diversity, inclusion, taboo emotions like anger and guilt, concept of self/identity, yoga philosophy, and intersectional feminism. As a yoga and meditation teacher, Serenity guides students in a warm, creative space to meaningfully connect to themselves, their bodies, and the world. She integrates self-healing practices, movement therapeutics, modern health science, and HeartMath Coherence techniques. Thoughts on God

Hi all, This past week there seemed to be a theme throughout all of my reading, conversations, and podcast teachings. I have been uncertain for a while what exactly I believe when it comes to GOD, the universe, mother earth etc. In this episode I share a bit about my upbringing in a very conservative "reformed Baptist" faith that was very legalistic. I know that some of my bias and skepticism comes from that upbringing and perspective of who God is. So for a while, I have been fine with leaving it in the "unknown" category, since we can never truly have the answer anyway, it is all about faith after all. Through some of the teachings and conversations I had the past week I believe some of my perspective has been shifted and it has left me feeling more open to possibilities of feeling personally connected with a higher power. This is a touchy subject, very personal and sensitive for many people, so I just want to clarify that these are just my personal musings, and I do not intend to sway your opinion or disregard your own beliefs.

Hi all, This week I talk about how I start to self edit my feelings because they might not be the same as someone else's. Or maybe someone else in the world is going through suffering so I shouldn't let myself experience hope, excitement, or joy. I talk about my struggle in real time to allow myself to observe an emotion that comes up instead of judging it and evaluating weather I "should" feel that way or not. The goal would be to observe the feeling, experience it, and let it pass without trying to change or judge it. Why is this so hard? And why does society train us to think this way? I hope sharing my story with you helps you break free of thoughts that might be attempting to steal you joy. Take some time to think about the kinds of mindfulness and self care practices that you need to schedule into your day, even as your schedule might shift and change. She invites you also to think about boundaries you have set with family members or ones you need to set; and stick to it! It can often be hard to stay strong in your boundaries when its "the holidays" and you are clinging to a spirit of cheer. But, remember how hard you have worked to set and keep those boundaries. You can find a way to still be your own best friend and support your own needs, while bringing cheer to others around you. "you are your own best friend. you are the only one who will never leave you. you are the only one who will always support you and want the best for you. so start acting like it. start being the best version of yourself because you deserve to live a life of greatness. start honoring your body, feeding it goodness and listening to its desires. start respecting your worth by walking away from anything that is no longer serving you. I'm talking people, places, and things. let them all go. because your soul is watching you act out here on earth and wanting you to change. that's why you feel so much chaos. that's why you feel so uneasy. change is calling. and you need to do it. you need to listen. analyze your life and find all the things wrong with it. and make them right. and do it with love in your heart and with love for yourself. make those changes. because no one else is going to do it for you. only you. it's always you. forever and ever." -Phoebe Garnsworthy
